Do the pattern in reverse starting at pick 8 and go down to pick 1, and *also* reverse the forwards and backwards directions. This is spectacular!! I am not sure which of you is getting the better deal, you or the gentleman who built that beautiful loom!!
    I am wondering if cards could be made from recycled material like milk jugs. That just popped into my mind because that is what the color of those cards reminds me of. I feel like it would also be helpful to have a couple of different colors of the cards so that counting to figure out forwards and backwards would be quicker and easier! Dang!!! Yesterday I had no clue that tablet weaving even existed and today I am trying to improve on the design of the tools!! Thanks RUclips rabbit hole!!!

    • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066
      @elewysoffinchingefeld3066  4 года назад +1

      Plastic milk jugs might work, but they're rather deformed on the edges. If you want to make plastic cards, get some heavy duty plastic folders to cut up. They come in a rainbow of colors! Just be sure to have some kind of template and round the corners so they don't catch on the threads as you turn them.

    • @breanneohare302
      @breanneohare302 3 года назад

      I have a deck of playing cards that has lost about 8 cards when my kids played 52x7 pickup. The deck doesn't work as a deck anymore (the other decks survived), so I plan to punch holes in it and have some extra weaving cards.
      That's still repurposed materials, but it's thread-friendly.
      Some other advantages to using playing cards are that they come pre-numbered, in multiple colors/suits, and it's almost as easy as Elewys's color-coded cards to tell which way is up.

      Yes, I do have a Facebook page--Elewys of Finchingefeld. I would love to see what you all are making from my videos! I finished this piece some time back and delivered it to the new owners, the Baroness and Baron of Glymm Mere! It was an epic weave since it was seven continuous yards, and in silk, but it was so pretty when it was finished! I came up with a way to reverse the twist without significantly disrupting the pattern, which I included in another video, Birka 22: Weaving in Reverse. Thanks for watching!

  • @karenradcliff9163

    Hi Elewys, thanks for the videos! I'm weaving Birka 22 and I'm using carpet warp. I know that you are using silk in the video. Here's my question: The single line of yellow that I see on your band--is it a float? I have that line, and mine is a float. Because it is a larger material, the float is more evident, and I worry it will catch. I've threaded according to pattern. Do I just need to weave it in a finer yarn? Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066
      @elewysoffinchingefeld3066  4 года назад

      Yes, it does float for a couple picks. Because it's a very short float, I haven't had any issues with it, but finer threads will definitely prevent any catching.

    waiting for my loom to be delivered... Can't wait to start. How long do you think it would take you to complete this particular project?

    • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066
      @elewysoffinchingefeld3066  4 года назад

      This one took a long time--it was 7 yards long and woven in silk. It would take much less time if it were 3 yards woven in 8/4 carpet warp.

    • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066
      @elewysoffinchingefeld3066  4 года назад +1

      That depends on how long you make the piece, the materials you use, and how many hours you work a day. When you start, time yourself for doing one repeat. Then measure how large the repeat is and multiply that out for the length you want it to be.

    Emma the Simple

    • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066
      @elewysoffinchingefeld3066  4 года назад +1

      It's not actually a needle--the paper is poorly taped together and it's separated. :D I was trying to create a banner to fly at camp and was doing a "test run" of the design to see if it works...and the best heraldry advise I had gotten was, "Hang it on your wall for six months. If you still like it, go for it." My arms are: Per bend sinister vert and lozengy argent and vert, an open pair of scissors fesswise argent.

      Z and S is the direction the thread goes through the card. S threaded has the thread entering the back of the card--the left side. Z threaded has the thread entering the front of the card--the right side. This causes the picks--each line of weaving--to tilt a different direction.
