- A perfect beginner's pattern! Finnish tablet weaving from the Karelian / Finnish Iron age, 11th to 12th century. This pattern was designed by the great tablet weavers, authors of Applesies and Fox Noses, Mervi Pasanen and Maikki Karisto, based on a find from the Kekomaki Cemetery in Kaukola, Finland.

Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingivers...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.

I'm so happy that I found your channel. I watched about 5 episodes then spent the weekend in the woodshop making a loom. I'm almost done with my first pattern, halstatt 152, and I love it. Thank you so much for making these videos!
The "which is simply not pronounceable" comment had me laughing out loud! We Swedes ofter have a Finnish translation on the back of products, tables-of-contents and alike, and I am flabbergasted every time..! 😅

The only Finnish I know is "paska housut" which I learned from my friend Heide, whose Grandfather was from Finland. I'm told it's a term of endearment... No offense to any Finns that I didn't try to perform the linguistic gymnastics that Finnish requires. I practiced it a few times, but decided I wasn't going to be able to do it. :D
Yeah, Finnish isn't easy to an English speaker. The few pointers I can give, are "stress is always on the 1st syllable" and that we're absolutely a phonetic language, if there's a letter on the page, it's never silent, and it's always pronounced the same way. But like I said, we don't expect a non-finn to get it completely right. 😉
And I guess paskahousut can be a term of endearment... Kind of like calling your sweetheart an asshole. 😂 (paska = shit, housut = pants)

I started knitting hose based on a Medieval pattern and realized I needed garters, which naturally led me to deciding to start card weaving (knitting is the gateway craft)! I found your channel and you make everything look so effortless! I got an Inkle loom so that I can follow along exactly with you and have just been goofing around to get the general gist of what to do. I will finish my goof off band today and then start this pattern tomorrow. Thank you for all that you do, you are a wonderful teacher with such warmth and humor.

I was watching the Townsend's videos the other day and they were discussing how these bands were used. I was so excited that from watching your videos understood some of what they were talking about. This was from the 17th century in America and lead me to several books on Amazon.

Thanks for posting this, you're right this is the perfect beginner pattern. It's easy to get a feel for the process and how it all works without worrying too much about the pattern.
I have this all set up and ready to start waving as soon as I am done with my Christmas crafting projects. I have a goal of working my way through that book.

Thank you for this video! I was given. Applesies and Fox Noses as a gift recently. Being new to weaving, the difference in pattern type from the format you use stumped me for awhile. Now, thanks to this video, I have my Rosetta Stone and have been able to figure out how to "convert" and use the patterns!

Hooray! I just found out about this book and plan to order it. Glad to know you have a mapping from their charting system to yours (with which I am most familiar); it will save me much time. Absolutely a great tutorial. Very simple easy to follow instructions. Two things I will need to go back to review. Why some cards go forwards and others backwards and why some cards are flipped in one direction while others in another. Is part of the reasoning the S and Z?
There's a great deal of mystery about how the threads move with the cards that's very hard to explain. The S and Z determines the slant of the threads, and turning the cards moves the threads front to back and top to bottom, which determines which thread will 'float' to the top to be seen. You really have to do the thing to see how it works.

This is great, another one I'm excited to try once I finally get a loom, aka approximately 2 days after you post the information about yours 😉. Hubby knows he's on alert for making it for me, lol
The problem is the convention of the hole designation with the letters A, B, C and D on the card and from which side the card you read.
In your case, the A is at the upside back, away from your body, and the D is at the front towards your body and upside, so you can use the sequence ABCD if you read the letters on the the left side your card from upside back the A, downside back the B, downside front the C and upside front the D. In my case, A is up and towards the body, i.e. so in the upside front and D would be away from the body at the upside back. In this term I have to read DCBA as the sequence to get this pattern.

Thought I'd look for the book.... yeah, not so much. Once a book is out of print re-sellers on Amazon think they should be able to charge the world it seems. Maybe with the new book coming out. Is there a different place to purchase these books on-line? I live in Canada.

Hi Elewys did you manage to find the new book? I still can't afford it, it seems to be out of print and second hand copies are now expensive.
I got the Tablet Woven Treasures book and it includes some of the patterns from the Applesies book, including this one.
What is the % of shrinkage when removed from loom?
I estimate about 25%
I was vaguely involved with SCA at one point when I lived in Texas and I recognize the name Ansteora, which I am probably misspelling. I coincidentally now live in the Seattle area, and would be mildly interested to know about the SCA hereabouts, though I'm not sure how much time I could spend on it.

In your experience, is there any reason I couldn't thread the cards before warping? My fingers fumble a lot with fiddly tasks, and I feel I'm just asking for tangles when I try to control four loose ends all at once.
I think you could probably solve the issue with clothespins or something similar to hold the tread ends temporarily.

I watched the video, can you tell me why the side is not equal? 3 cards on the left and 2 on the right! On can we put a extra card if we want without offending the pattern maker?
Apparently it was common in some period weaving. I wondered if this was to add more selvedge to sew it down onto a garment? You can make any alterations to the patterns that you like--add a card to make it symmetrical, add six cards on each side to make it wider, whatever you like!
How long of a piece will your loom make, and can you adjust that with how you wrap your threads?
My loom maxes out at 3 3/4 yards. I can make it smaller, but can't make it bigger.
Does your choice of thread colour for the weft matter at all? I sometimes think, with some of the skip-hole patterns, that it might, but it's hard to be sure.
I know I did one where the weft showed, but I think that may have been inexperience...
@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 So normally it wouldn't matter, then? But I'm guessing you could exaggerate or diminish a pattern by using a thicker or thinner ply of thread?
Or beating looser or not pulling the weft as tight. I think you can get a shadow of the weft in those skip hole weaves, but for the most part, I use a thread that matches the edges, which is usually the same color as the background, so that I don't have any weirdness where I don't want it.
Are there any patterns that are Irish? Everything seems to be Norse/Finish ect.
