Rolex GMT-Master 2 “Pepsi” 116719 BLRO vs. Patek Philippe 5524G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time; this week’s luxury watch contest has all the hallmarks of an epic; Rolex vs. Patek Philippe; GMT-Master 2 vs. Calatrava Pilot Travel Time; Geneva’s finest pilot’s watches go head-to-head to determine the ultimate aviator’s co-pilot for the cockpit, ready room, or pilot’s bar!
    The Rolex GMT-Master 2 “Pepsi” roared back to life with 2014’s Baselworld launch of the GMT Master II 116719 BLRO. As the first Rolex Cerachrom ceramic bezel GMT to bear the watch’s original red-and-white 24-hour calculator bezel, the new “BLRO” was an historic milestone for Rolex. But unlike the steel 2013 Rolex GMT-Master II 116710 BLNR “Batman,” the new “Pepsi” was a white gold flagship equally at home in the cockpit or lounge of a Gulfstream jet.
    The white gold 116719 BLRO, like the steel 2018 Rolex “Pepsi” GMT 126710 BLRO, is defined by its bezel; red represents the day, and blue represents time zones currently experiencing night. By setting the 24-hour GMT hand to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the user of the Rolex GMT-Master 2 can temporarily read three distinct time zones on the dial. As with all Rolex GMT Master II models, the BLRO features a 24-hour hand and a 12-hour hand that can be set independently of each other. A Rolex manufacture caliber 3186 is automatic, certified by the COSC as a Swiss Chronometer, provides a 48-hour power reserve, and can enter a stop-second mode (hacking) to set precisely. The Rolex Oyster case and Triplock crown provide 100-meter water resistance.
    Patek Philippe launched its 5524G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time to a mildly stunned Baselworld audience in 2015. The 42mm white gold pilot’s watch bears little relation to any production piece from Patek Philippe’s past. Although a 53mm monster prototype from the Patek Philippe Museum was cited as inspiration, the dual-time mechanism in the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time owes more to the seminal Patek Philippe 2597, a travel time watch designed for Patek by watchmaking great Louis Cottier.
    But Patek Philippe’s unexpected offering is as beautiful as it is non-sequitur. The dial - a richly grained navy blue - rewards loupe viewing to the same degree as the caliber 324 SC FUS. Patek graces the 5524G with lush white gold Arabic numerals with thick applications of luminova. The travel time display system is clear, intuitive to use, and allows the owner to hide the skeletonized reference hour hand under the local hour hand when not in use. Twin travel time triggers require one quarter turn to lock and unlock; 60-meter water resistance is double the typical Calatrava and sufficient for surface swimming.
    The Calatrava Pilot Travel time features an automatic caliber 324 variant optimized to display two time zones, a radial date, and twin night/day displays. It boasts Patek’s proprietary Gyromax free-sprung balance and silicon Spiromax anti-magnetic hairspring. The hand-finished surfaces of the movement are executed with exhaustive attention to detail and a luxurious excess of visible refinements. Ceramic rotor bearings and unidirectional action wind the 35-45-hour power reserve; six-position adjustment ensures the Patek Philippe-guaranteed rate of -3/+2 seconds per day or better.
    Rolex’s 60-year legacy in the cockpit and Patek Philippe’s upstart ace vie for blue-sky supremacy this airborne episode of Versus!

    Never I would thought that a Rolex would give a Complications Patek such a hard dog fight. At the end the classic pilot shape and the finish of the watch and movement won for me, with the Calatrava Pilot.

      The Pilot gets even better the more time you spend with it. Over the years, I've moved from liking this watch for its boldness (by Patek standards) to loving it for its richness.

    Well done Tim - another very well conceived show down, this time between the big two. Despite its lack of a true historical underpinning the PP does clearly fly ahead in artismal, visual beauty and craftsmanship . With both reasonable wr and calibre durability I would chose it over the Crown - this decision very much contributed by the fact that I couldn't really wear this expensive a Rolex in any sportsman setting anyway. - even though the timepiece deserves allot of credit for such robust durability.. Great program. 👍

    Tim I choose the gray gold Rolex GMT Master 2 Pepsi over the Patek Philippe Calatrava. The Rolex has a beautiful Gray gold case and bracelet, nice white gold hands and a nice red and blue bezel. The Rolex movement is solid and reliable. the Gray gold bracelet Rolex is cheaper then the gray gold on leather strap Patek.

    Love the display caseback of The PP but overall Rolex wins this one for me. Better warranty, less expensive, hacking seconds and a ton of gold. The Pateks power reserve is under par as well.

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  6 лет назад +1

      The Rolex warranty is a huge attraction to me as well, but in the real world of daily use, you wouldn't notice the difference of power reserve. I should have mentioned in the video that despite a lack of any dedicated stop-seconds function, the Patek CAN be synchronized to the second with light back pressure on the crown. While it's not hacking in the engineered sense, this stop-seconds technique is extremely easy to access and allows precise setting at will.

    As for the watches, they are both fantastic, and I would be thrilled to own either of them. The winner for me is the Patek Philippe. This model - like so many of their men's wristwatches - is masculine, elegant, and graceful at the same time.

      Thanks, rzr! The watches and creative planning still excite me, and I plan to stick around to develop new long-form collector's features like Versus. I believe that the 5524G set new standards for the "old fashioned" (i.e., distinct from X-33s and Aerospaces) pilot's watch class in 2015. Three years later, the Patek still looks and feels more impressive than anything else designed to the pilot class' well established themes.

      I'm not an orthodox (i.e., steel-only) Rolex guy, so the non-traditional white gold BLRO appeals to me more than steel. If the budget were sufficient and I had the inclination to buy Rolex, this would be on my shopping list. considering how difficult it is to get a rolex, and how difficult it is to get PP's, this Patek is one of the more possible watches to get. It's leagues ahead of the Rolex, which is just a mass produced machine made watch, while the Calatrava was hand finished. One is an over-priced tool, the other is a piece of art that happens to be a great tool as well.

      Most people who want a GMT probably wouldn't opt for the gold. But in order to compare two well-known brands that operate at different price points, the white gold BLRO was the natural choice for a Patek comparison.

      The unusual matchup was made possible by the white gold of the Rolex. Ordinarily, Rolex and Patek are discussed as the strongest brand names in watches, but price points mean that we rarely have the chance to compare them directly.

      @@the1916companywatchreviews I understand, and yes, I get the point, its a good comparison and interesting. If I was to pick one of these watches it would be the patek to be honest. Its not my favourite patek but the finishing of Patek is just so beautiful up close. and the movement is quite specular. Its also a watch that doesn't get much notice by non watch guys, so in some ways I like that. This watch was always a very unusual move for Patek for me, its not a heritage piece and seems like a new take on a Pilot watch by the company. Ive seen one in the flesh and some of the comments here are way off base - its a stunning looking watch in the flesh - its all the micro details that Patek get right, things you notice more when you have been buying watches for decades.

    Hi Tim, great review, iI know the Aquanaut 5164 is not a pilot's watch but as a travel watch for me makes a better proposition than the 5524G, if you can get it retail price...the 5164 with an alarm would be the perfect travel watch..., on the other hand the Rolex being all white gold is too heavy for wearing it in a trip....

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  6 лет назад

      Thanks, Robert. To be sure, the steel and 120-meter 5164A is a more sensible travel watch than the 5524G. With these white gold "pilot" style watches, I saw a rare opportunity to compare Patek and Rolex directly. While both have impressive brand equity and likely rank 1 and 1A in that respect, we rarely see equivalent models from PP and Rolex, so I had to seize this chance. As for a Patek with an alarm, the only one I can recall with this feature in a wristwatch format is... the 6300G Grandmaster Chime.

    This is one 'meh' Patek! To me, if I am ever interested in a travel-pilot on a strap there are a few options from Zenith that would do it for me at 1/4 of the price.

    I think Rolex should have made the new Pepsi with a dial that fades from burgundy red top to navy blue bottom (a la James Cameron Sea Dweller) with text, indices, and maybe even lume that reverses on each dial half, all to represent day and night.

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure that Rolex feels it has that kind of flexibility to modify the GMT. The Deepsea Sea-Dweller was an unpopular model with tepid demand and little history (launched 2008), so modding it for the sake of a sales stunt didn't risk treading on sacred ground.
      Also, the R&D costs for the sophisticated '08 Deepsea were HUGE, and Rolex needed to recoup them -- including by colorful Cameron-Inspired means if necessary. That's likely the reason the 40mm 116600 died in 2017 to make room for the SD43. Just about everyone expected the Deepsea to be the one culled when the 43mm Sea-Dweller bowed, yet Rolex continues to make two similar watches separated by 1mm of nominal size. In my view, that's solely down to recovering the huge investment in the Deepsea.
      The GMT, Sub, and Daytona are in a different league; I would be shocked to see a D-Blue style dial on any of these.

      WatchBox Reviews Yeah, I guess I’m being a little extreme. You and I both love Omega, Audi, H. Moser, and you’re slowly convincing me to like JLC; to which I counter with my friends GP, GO, and UN - all of whom I’ve loved for longer periods of time than it was ever hip to love them for.
      I have gifted many Rolexes but I’ve never owned one. With Rolex being somewhat stodgy with their slow model evolution cycles, their one stand out best stands to be dial color offerings. If Rolex doesn’t keep their brand young with models and model evolutions then cool dial colors would be a nice way to keep the brand fresh. I guess one could say this about other brands, however. Anyway, all the best to you too!

  • @dougm659

    Both of these watches flatter to deceive imho....both very expensive, both beautifully made but, if you want a proper tool watch why bother with the extreme cost of these grey gold fancy pants? I love the functionality of a GMT watch but, if i’m going to spend waaaaay over $10,000 I prefer the gold to be a tad more visible so that’s why my name is on an AD’s list for the Rolex GMT Master II root beer and steel. Pateks may be amongst the best made watches around but, frankly, I find them boring!

  • @49fiori

    The prices of 5524G have tanked! Patek has sent too many to the ADs. The ADs sold them at discount to Hong Kong dealers. Now you can get them brand new for 308,000 HKD. Same will happen to 5524R in few months. I guess Patek has to kill few references to protect the shortages of Nautilus and Aquanaut.

      When directly comparable, I do favor the Tudor line over current Rolex. The value and features of the Tudors make Rolex purchases tough to reason. My choice from among all current Tudors would be an Advisor with black dial or the Pelagos LHD. I'm not sure that there's a dedicated "pilot's watch" in the current Tudor line, but the Pelagos GMT might fill that role by default.

    Having owned one of these for the last few years, I can tell you that the locking mechanism on the pushers is far from perfect. it will only take a few hours of wear to realise that they have unlocked themselves and the time bears no relation to your time zone. I have sent it back to PP but they did nothing to alleviate the issue. They are basically not interested. There should be a heavier spring, a more pronounced indent or half a turn to stop them unwinding . Out of all my watches this is probably the least desirable, simply because of this irritating design fault. It's a shame as I love the classic simple look and the brown strap. As a pilot, this is my last choice to fly with; first is my IWC pilot chronograph. Simple, classic and easy to read without my reading glasses.

    well when you start comparing a Rolex sports watch with a Patek, any Patek, it should be considered a sign to stop drinking!

    The dial on the PP is sublime, but the ‘3 crowns’ ruin the look, IMO.

    Tim you didn't analyse the two correctly, you think that PP is a pilot watch?, it has only the aesthetic kind of look like a pilot watch this watch can't be a pilot watch this watch can be only a GMT watch at the most. what value PP bring to the table?, PP have the Geneve quality and that's it. Rolex GMT is a submariner with GMT function with a standert of Rolex superlative chronometer accuracy, wich standert is better?, I guess only god know not even you Tim.
    by the way the price of th Rolex pepsi gmt in stainless steel is about 18000$ and not 9000$

      And it'll cost far less; with the $55,000 necessary to buy a used 5524G, you can buy a pre-owned WG BLRO, a steel Sub, and get on the wait-list for a steel/ceramic Daytona with 10-grand left.
      Best,

      Do we have one on our website? I can shoot anything we have in stock, but because we're primarily a pre-owned dealer, I need to wait on occasion if we don't have a particular watch on hand.

      The GMT was a 1950s commission from Pan-Am airlines. That's as authentic as pilot's watches get. Also, the watches are similar in size, color, metal, complication, fit, and at $38 grand vs $47, these represent the top of the market for pilot-style watches.

      WatchBox Reviews I disagree. If you insist, at best, this Rolex can be called a frequent-flier watch. It lacks everything that is supposed to make it a “pilot” watch (i.e. large size, big indices for legibility, large crown for easy grip and etc.). And I bet you the reason Pan-Am or any other airline or flight crew would use that watch is the lower cost.

      Honestly, I wished watch makers would consult a professional pilot whose also a mechanical watch enthusiast, like me, to help them design a truly useful watch for professional pilots and travelers alike. Because what watch makers come up with and call a “pilot’s watch” really aren’t the most ideal answer to what a professional traveler needs and wants in their watch.

      I've always maintained that something like (or exactly like) a Breitling Aerospace Evo is a "pilot's watch" by 2018 standards. The various - and piercing - alarms, chronographs, backlights, 12/24-hour formats, and multiple time displays seem more relevant than any mechanical watch.
      In general, I've always considered the term "pilot's watch" to be shorthand for "old fashioned pilot's watch" when applied to mechanical timepieces. But if required to use a mechanical watch for actual aviation backup of some kind, the watch of choice for me would be a Damasko DK11 or a Sinn 103.
