  • Well be going over how to build a custom entertainment stand, using Birch butcher block.
The final stand is 19.5”H x 50”W x 19”D, but of course you can make one as deep, wide or high as you’d like.
Shout out to my sister and her fiancé for letting me use their table saw.

Pre stain, Nice bristle brush, or wipe the stain in, which I feel shows more grain. Use a tack clothe to remove dust. More layers of finish. Use semi gloss finish for the first 2-4 coat, then finish with satin finish. Sand with finer sand paper between the final finish coat. Great job and I love the table.

    Its for home theater so
#2 won't matter. But #2. Is in hifi you should fill the steel legs with dry sand, BB's because added weight
    Ringing. Next 1 try it

Thank you for such a great guide. I ended up making similar items:
-a coffee table with a top and one shelf, left the butcher block (birch) it’s original size.
-a TV stand with a top and one shelf that just sits on the feet with some thick felt pads protecting the butcher block. Left butcher block original size
    -4 matching end tables.
The birch butcher block was cheap as it had some dents and dings which I used an iron, t shirt, water to lift the dents out.
-Finish was a Varathane waterbased gunstock color, which is lighter than yours and matches my hardwood floors. I used a pre-stain conditioner as well, which worked well to prevent blotchy staining on such a soft, porous wood.
    - I went with Varathane water based polyurethane. 10-12 coats, allowing two hours to dry in between. I also sanded with 600 grain between each coat. Coats started to get smooth with good coverage at somewhere between 6-8 coats (I’d say this is your minimum based on my experience). I waited a week before using the furniture just to be safe. After 6 months, the coffee table finish still looks basically new so the finish is holding up well.

Quick tip: after applying stain, while it's still wet or damp, wipe it off with a lint free rag, going in the direction of the grain. Let dry then reapply a 2nd coat and wipe it off again. It will give a nice even coat without those dark spots.

I'm building a six-foot version right now. I noticed, after I'd ordered them, that the pipes and flanges you link to on Amazon are actually 1-1/4" instead of 1" like you used here. It's turned out okay, though. I grabbed a 1-3/4" forstner bit and went with it since the larger diameter pipe looks good with the 6' butcher block. I also used a spade bit after I got the forstner started because the spade can take out a large amount of the center of the hole much quicker than the forstner by itself. You end up with a lip in the hole that the forstner bit can sit on, and it cuts that lip really fast since the center is already cleared out. Thanks for posting this. I'm excited to see mine all set up.

Why does the pipe have to pass through the wood? If you cut and thread separate pieces of pipe, you can just attach the flanges and screw them in. Ok, I see, so they are adjustable. But, buy just getting four longer or shorter pieces of pipe you could have adjusted them also.

Changing out pipes would make things a lot more cumbersome and complicated than how I designed it

@@ThaVillaMan True, but...assuming you put some thought into the original spacing what cha want to bet you never adjust them? And did you test those clamps to see how much weight they would support before slipping? I have several amps that weight 70-75 lbx, but then that's on 20lbs on each clamp if I have it in the middle of the boards. But other than wishing there was somthing that could have been used besides those clamps, you did a darn good job!

I’ve adjusted them a couple time, but that’s strictly to accommodate RUclips reviews. In your case I would forego the brackets and use shorter pipes w/ flanges- especially if you’d have amp on them. Mine only needs to hold speakers

Nice vid as always man. I have a really quick question i just bought a vizio 65 quantum x and on some of your vidoes including this one i am getting these weird horizontal flashing white bars on the very top of the tv. Had me a little worried. My real issue is i have not been able to replicate it with any other hlg or hdr10 content. Only have been able to see it in a few of your vids. Let me know if you have any idea what it could be. Thanks!

Cool project. We did something like this as well, pic is here www.dropbox.com/s/6yesxxjjgr34mtv/av.jpg?dl=0 few of our changes. I wanted wheels on mine, so that I could easily move it... for me, it was mandatory. Those are 3 inch locking casters. After 2 years, they are doing well. Easily helped with them move. I also didnt drill through to make shelves adjustable. Not only it make it much easier, but obviously sturdier (at the expense of flexibility). Looking back, I would have preferred to have it flexible too, but at the time it wasn't possible as I build 2 of these and the butcher block came prefinished and the whole effort to remove finish, sand it, stain 6 very heavy pieces, was too much. Overall, very cool project!

    • @zstarwarsz

Forgot to add. I didnt do adjustable because my components are 60-70lbs amplifiers and such and didnt think rings could hold them reliably. Right now, each shelf is good for 150+lbs.. My size is 48x24x1.5 Butcher block came as 96x24x1.5, so we had to cut it into 2 as well.

That came out great, I like it!
I had to drill through mine because I had a max height it could be (20”), so I had to get creative on how I approached it. Thanks for sharing!

@@ThaVillaMan Ya, for sure. We had alots of issues with removing finish and staining 6 things and such. I also didnt think those would those more than 50-70 pounds without digging into the wood. I do wish it was adjustable (sometimes) and if I could have another shelf there.

Love this video! In future if you slightly thin the poly slightly you will have a better finish. You will need a few more coats but the viscosity breaks down slightly and you have no bubbles or brush/foam lines. Learned this making a smiling style table
