In our recent pony car comparison test, the retro-heavy - and just plain heavy - 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS walked away with top honors in its debut. The big V8-powered coupe needed a new challenge. It was time to refocus the lens. Shoot from a different angle, so to speak.
So we squared the brooding visage of our SS-badged protagonist up against the cruelest bunch of savages we could find, the range-topping 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 and 2010 Ford Shelby GT500.

Bad choice
Challenger is modern muscle. It is wide, heavy, long, and manly. It may not be the fastest, but it sure is the most iconic. A Challenger SRT8 is a tank with the Hemi.

Mike Richardson Pony cars & muscle cars aren't mutually exclusive. Some pony cars are also muscle cars. Challengers fit the definitions of both.

SES10M Well, the lines are blurred, but Pony Car is defined by many as an American, front-engined, RWD, two-door coupe with a long hood and a short deck. The Mustang was the first to have that design. Shortly after, Chevy/Pontiac and Dodge/Plymouth came out with their versions.
Muscle Car has more to do with a large, powerful V8 engine.
OddTimeMan muslce cars are 2+2 American cars with front large displacement, Pony cars are a sub category where small coupes keeping 2+2 seats with large displacements engines, People make the mistake to say the Mustang was the first muscle car when the actual first muscle car was the Pontiac GTO designed by John Delorean, cars like the GTO and the Plymoth road runner where Big coupes compared to the smaller muscle cars, when the mustan came out people started to call it a Pony car because of its small size compared to other muscle cars and so the muscle care where born now the mustang and the camaro have grown in size and weight so they keep the heritage name of pony cars but they are now more muscle cars (even if the are smaller than the charger an challenger who always have been muscle cars)

The 5.0 wasn't out when they made this comparison.
Ya they had the wimpy 4.6L way to show up to the fight with a power adder like a super charger
King C this was 2009 so they took the top cars of that year....the 5.0 came out in 2011.
Brian Roagers no the picked the top cars of that year....the top mustang was the Shelby the top srt was slower damn I hate mopar owners. Always complaining.
@brianroagers6894 that wimpy 4.6 only ran 2-3 tenths behind the camaro despite only having 315 hp and it was much cheaper and lighter. The gt500 wasn't that much more price was vs the dodge and its down almost a full liter of displacement to the other two.

how the hell did you guys only get a 13.6 from the Challenger SRT8???.. Motor Trend tested the weaker Challenger R/T and ran a 13.6 too ON THE SAME TEST TRACK. Are there test drivers that much better than yours? lol

@@Bo12346hhgfgdg she hellcat didn't exist yet either this was years before any of those came out. The hellcat cost a good bit more than that gt500. I have seen those gt500s of that year trapping like 118ish. These cars are running much slower than normal. The 13-14 gt500 was just as fast if not faster than the newer 15 up hellcat. The precious shelbys can also beat hellcats with a simple 1500-2000 dollar blower swap.

No it actually wouldn't. This gt500 was trapping 9 mph higher than the challenger. It would take big boost to gain enough mph to "destroy" the gt500. The non hellcat challengers aren't known for being able to take boost very well. You throw a blower on either of these other cars then the gt500 gets an aftermarket blower. These cars are all stock. You throw an aftermarket blower on one they all should get an aftermarket blower. Guess what the gt500 would still come out on top. This is an old comment but still a dumb one.

Really.. if you had 50,000 dollar's whould you really buy a camaro or a challenger. you get 662 BHP in the new shelby gt500. it doesn't need a rocket scientist to explain this...

I would take the new z/28. I own an SS, and I'm drooling over the new 7 litre z/28 that did the Nurbergring in 7:37.
Plus I'll take independent rear suspension over a live real axle any day.
$50k to spend on a car? Will that get you a GT500? The only one I drove was $72k and I hated driving it. Make no mistake, the power was INSANE but I was uncomfortable and felt like I was sitting on top of the car instead of inside it. I'd probably take the $50k and buy the ZL1.

Last time i checked, the Challenger is the only one of the 3 that still looks like its classic counterpart, the rest just look like tuner cars now. So they are disqualified for not being muscle cars XD
And the mustang did it with the smaller engine so yeah the super charger is a good addition. And for all you saying the gt500 isn't factory I'd like to see you go to Shelby enterprise and by one. You'll only get the super snake there the gt500 comes straight off the assembly line right next to the GT. So face it your car's didn't cut it

seeing as a gt500 is actually suppose to compete against the corvettes i think this is a huge embarrassment to ford that the ss was on their monster mustangs tails... if they put up the z28 or the zl1 thats gt500 would have gotten crushed let alone the class it was originally designed to compete in...
now the fan boys/haters will all start talking shit about the ford GT stomping the vettes... different class btw the ford gt is in league with the european super cars such as lambos and high end ferraris

My 2008 challenger runs 13.2 @ 107 on an automatic. Automatics are becoming increasingly more efficient on the strip.

@TheElysianTerror Yeah I see what you mean, but the GT is really the sportier version of the V6 mustang. And then the GT 500 is even better than the GT. HP, price, and performance are more similar within the SRT8, GT, and SS. I know that this isn't the newer engine, but even the 2008 Challenger with the older engine is running 4.7-4.8 and the newer ones are going 4.4-4.5. You were informative, and polite, I didn't feel you were bashing at all. Nice SRT8, I'm happy you got one, I love them too!
@randumbuller ugghh, I don't know, the thing is that the Shelby has so much more power than the rest do, it also costs so much more. The Camaro SS, Challenger SRT8, and Mustang GT are all a couple tenths of a second apart from each other and are price relatively near each other. The Shelby on the other hand is nearly half a second ahead of second place. I know the Challenger is very big and the blind spots from that massive rear pillar can be annoying but like I mentioned, the space and seats...
Yeah so a couple things. First off, like some others said, why did they use a gt500 not a gt, which would have been a much better more fair choice. Second, why is it that inside line seems to get such bad 0-60 times for the Challenger. First they had 5.5 seconds, now 5.3, this car can easily do 4.6-4.8, what are they're drivers doing? Also, the Challenger is very practical, with the biggest truck and 5 seats. Plus it looks the most like the original and is the best looking one. Challenger wins!
i want to see them compare the 2012 challenger SRT8 that is the best modern muscle car ever!!! the camaro is plastic shit and the Shelby well im not a big fan im a dodge person but the 2012 challenger SRT8 392 Hemi with 470 horsepower and does 0-60 just like this shelby
I really liked this video. Anybody from the 60's knows the quarter mile is the true test of muscle & HP. Couple comments: The 13.6 time in the quarter for the Challenger, I find that pretty hard to believe unless the Challenger was inhibited with a stick shift and the driver wasn't pulling good power shifts (never taking your foot off the floored gas pedal and shifting thru gears as fast as your little hands can go). I drove a stock (no fancy tires, no headers, all stock) 1968 Dodge Coronet (a boat of a car and weight but no stick shift) automatic slapstick trannie with a 375 hp 440 CID engine in the quarter at the Wichita Int'l Raceway in 1968 and got the same time with it. 13.6 in the quarter. I think the new Challenger could beat that time with an automatic trannie in it.
@G0ldmeml3er Yes that may all be true, but the GT 500 doesn't compete with the Challenger. The Mustang GT does against the SRT8, that would be like comparing the Hennessy Camaro against the Mustang GT.
LOL thats not too ridiculous, except for the Hellion Twin Turbo as they are made for the build of standard and R/T Challengers. Let me take that out of the equation as it is the kit under my hood that I know and love. Let's just settle on a supercharger that way both vehicles are supercharged, now let's see who does more work! It's still not fair HAHAHA Dodge needs to put superchargers in the SRT8 Challengers at least so they can make up for the $40,000 price tag! XD
@michaeltknowlton Yeah that LS3 responds real well... By blowing one of its pushrods into another state...a simple anything done to an engine can make it better than others, stock for stock LS3 gets left behind, if you're talking about modding, then whoever has the most money, hell I can toss a liquid cooled KB on a 5.0 and 17 lbs boost all day no worries, try that in your LS3 lol
@TheCarVlogger the gt500 was made to compete against the SS and SRT. The GT is roughly aimed at the RT and v6 camaro. Have you ever driven a challenger? I have, its HUGE, and the size makes it pretty un practical for me. But i do agree the challenger should win, considering the camaro and mustang are pony cars, as where the challenger is the only technical muscle car in this review.

Now I would agree with you if you're talking about the 1000, that car is a beast with a beast price tag lol. However it's a race car, pitted against the cobrajet...Chevy loses again. @Dman2569 Is that supposed to be some kind of joke? Ford has always been superior to chevy. Their founder WORKED for ford. Ford was first. As for the silverado, it has nowhere near the technology the f150 has. Silverado has rear drum breaks, weak frame, less payload and towing, and extremely cheep interior. The F150 has the strongest frame, most payload and towing and higher quality interior. Oh, and the duracrap is designed by Isuzu, just sayin :)
@10243612B See, you don't even read a lot about the Mustang 5.0 to know that the stock gears in a 6 speed Mustang is actually faster than the 3:73 geared car. The 3:73 gears make it a requirement to shift just at the timing lights at the end of the track where the stock geared Mustang pulls through the quarter without that final shift. You get the 3:73 gears with the Track Pack, but they won't necessarily make the 5.0 faster in the quarter.
@bkillgo81 Edmunds did the comparison between the 2011 Mustang GT and the Camaro SS and the Challenger and the Camaro put a whoopin on the Mustang GT in 1/4 mile runs, slalom and measured G force around curves. Road and Track and Car & Driver showed the Camaro faster in the quarter as well. Lot's of Ford fans want to point to Motor Trend's test of the 5.0 Mustang, but MT thought something was wrong and put their 5.0 on a dyno...uh, oh, Ford sent a ringer with 435HP rather than the advertised 412

you can't compare those cars seriously if you want looks, you will go for a challenger, I happen to have one but the truth is that they all have different motors and it's impossible to compare and say which one is better if they all had super charged or turbo charged motors that are all the same then we can compare other than that it's tough especially since the challenger and camaro are way heavier but the challenger wins in looks.
A decent challenger in Australia will cost you $75,000. Everything's expensive in Australia. Someone get me a American visa.
I like your video lots. However I'm confused why you guys compared the Shelby to the SS and not the Challenger scat pack. you should have compared the Mustang GT to the other two. Another observation is that Camaro when tested by Motortrend magazine tested the SS at 4.6 to 4.7 seconds and not 5.0 seconds. ??
Was it 120 degrees? Were you at 20,000' above sea level? It's not just the Et that's .5 a second slow on every car but the trap speeds are all 3-5 mph off. Wtf. Shelby is an easy 12.20 at 116-118 car, the ss is easy a 12.80 at 110-112 and the 6.1 Hemi is a 13.0 at 109. Anywhere else in the world.
the 4th gen camaro even when they were stopped being made in 02 ,it dominated the mustang gt for over a decade.and what a new 420hp mustang gt runs in the 1/4 mile,a 4th gen camaro ss does the same with just 325hp lol.also look up Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE vs Ford Mustang GT Track Pack.chevy is getting their grove back.
LOL the shelby is supercharged straight out of the factory, while that explains its high price, it just isnt fair :'( hahaha add a hellion twin turbo kit and supercharge the Challenger and it will dominate both other vehicles at a drag strip easily any day AND keep the overall amount of money spent on the Challenger cheaper than the Shelby. XD hahaha

@cemetarygatesml I don't know if you recall but motortrend's first test with the 2011 gt500 with the new aluminum block and performance package resulted in a 4.1 0-60, not a huge difference from 4.5 but when your talking 0-60 it is...also good job comparing a super car to a pony car lol Next lets compare the Ford GT to the Camaro SS.

The Mustang GT still beats the Camaro with its new 5.0, and when the new ZL1 comes out, so does the new Shelby gt500...650 bhp vs 580 bhp, Shelby wins again lol AND that's not even the top gt500, we still have the super snake to deal with :-) You better go call Hennessy!
@kingermanfool And now I come across your comment. LOL I agree though, all of them are good looking. The New Fords aren't the Fords of the 90s, so they are definitely better. If I had to buy one, and live with it, I'd get the Camaro. Cheaper on the wallet, performance isn't too bad, and more money left over means more money to play with.
@CemetaryGatesML the vette does destroy a cobra, it is faster to 60 by about anywhere from .3-.7 seconds and its handling is ages beyond the cobra.

Let's compare apples to apples next time. Let's let Shelby take a challenger and a Camaro and then make it a SHELBY challenger and SHELBY camaro. (Or Hennessy) That isn't a ford any more it's a Shelby. Supercharge all cars and make a more even race..... That'd be great.
Not hating at all but let's get real the performance cars of Chevy and Dodge aren't even on here. GT500 is Ford's flagship for performance. Remember Chevy has Corvette and Dodge has the viper so that's the race you have to see. So next video should be the best Mustang vs. the Corvette and the Viper.
@spankinator5000 Actually the Hennessey Camaro kills the Super Snake. Watch that video where they show the "top tuner muscle cars" or something like that. The Hennessey does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. That's Corvette territory, and super exotic sports car, like ferrari and lamborginni.

Apples and Oranges..spend $10k on the SS and it will blow away anything the SRT8 or GT500 can do. Call me cheap, call me a Chevy fan, call me a Camaro fan for life (owned a 92Z28 and 94Z28), but either way, its the best looks and performance.
The mustang isn't even a fucking muscle car if you ask me. It's unfair to compare it to the Challenger, the real muscle car of the three.

I really do not care any way, but I really do not see how it is fair to compare when you have one car with a super charger or turbo on it and the other two don't. This is really not a fair comparison. My friend has a 2005 Chrysler 300 c and he does mid 13's on the quarter mile with only 345 factory horses and the whole car is factory, so how can the SRT8 be doing around the same when it is actually pumping out around 435 horses and has a different rear end than my friends Chrysler which is not meant for speed , but still flies. I just think that whenever car companies or any of the auto magazines do a comparison, all cars should be equipped the same. Lets slap a super charger on that hemi or on the Camaro's engine and see what actually can transpire. Make the tranny's and the rear ends exact so we can actually see what each ENGINE is actually capable of doing. My opinion it all comes down to what each person likes whether by looks or style or whatever floats their boat they will inevitably, pick which one they prefer.

The cool thing about the Camaro is that there is a holographic display that directs on the drivers windshield. Allowing you to see speed/fuel etc - without taking your eyes off the road.
@10243612B NO just get the all best of the 3 beast. Challenger SRT8 (w/Hemi 392) vs the TRUE Shelby Super Snake (no gt500 bull) vs Camaro SS (or what ever the top model Camaro is).
So now Redo these cars in 2015 with the New models for each and see the comparisons.. The Hellcat and the Shelby and the top Camaro. i'm tired of seeing all these Old videos that compare the same cars to the crap SRT8 with the 6.1.... at least use the 6.4 to make it fair.

Umm... the SRT8 can get way faster times than 5.3 for 0-60. It can also probably do faster on the 1/4 mile.

I don't believe this. My stock 2011 mustang gt V8 does 0-60 in about 4.5 or so. So there is NO WAY that the 2010 shelby supercharged does it in 4.6 sec.

The challenger is large enough to be a family car.
To think it can compete with two cars that pretty much can only be used as sports cars is too much to ask.
The challenger Hellcat with 707 horse power however even with it's size can blow either one of the water.
In a real track race, once your camaro will be over taken by MY '10 gt500 you cant get pass, cuz I'll go sideways ;)

So shelby won kinda knew it shelby is a beast but the zl1 wasnt out yet true but then comes the new shelby and it still dominates the zl1 camaro no campare on straight lines or real world driving except on a track it dominates zl1 owners knoe better than to mess with shelby but challenger always last?? Maybe cause its the only one without a super charger now slap one on and kiss shelby and zl1 goodbye if the shelby has 2.3l supercharger imagine that on a 6.4l hemi yup challenger wins nd its sexy af by the way im a mustang owner lol
The 0-60 times are WAY off on this. The 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 liter is rated at 4.6 seconds.
They are comparing the Camaro and Challenger to a car that has over 100 HP more... I'm still waiting for that fair fight.
