motortrend is responsible in convincing me to purchase my 2012 mustang gt 3 years ago. no regrets. after 50,000 miles the pony is still running strong with no mechanical down time between multiple drag strip runs and road course duty.
Coming back and watching this... Really glad I went with my 11 GT over the others.. Still am lost as to how on Gods green earth this guy picked the Challenger over the Camaro in terms of anything other than looks for 2nd place. If I had the $ I'd own all 3. Not a huge fan of the 15-17 models of any of these.
I've always been an American muscle lover. When it came down to me buying my very first new muscle car I test drove them all. I agree with this video in that I had a hard time with visibility out of the camaro. The challenger was nice to drive but a bit too fat for me. The mustang felt great and I had fun driving it and happy to be owning one now! But nothing against the other two. Long live american muscle!
Doug Vandegrift camaro and mustangs are PONY cars. And challenger is a muscle car.
And adult wow nice too see I work for Chevrolet and drive a mustang you can imagine how that goes for me lol 😂
I'm a fan of all American Muscle Cars. I hate that Chev/Dodge/Ford fans bash each other when we should stick together against overpriced/overrated European/Ricer cars. I owned a 2005 Dodge Charger RT which I loved the looks (yes even if they fcked it up with 4 doors) but it felt too big and would have loved the SRT8. Then I bought a 96 Camaro Z28 which was very quick, had a mean sound but it felt like it was falling apart (rattling) and sometimes scary fishtailing around corners. I now own a 2005 Mustang GT with several mods and I love it although I'm currently having fuel pump issues. If you ask me I'd proudly take any of these 3 cars and love the fact that they have their own identity and looks. To each their own I say but I respect all 3 makes.
word brother!
4 doors suck
JF F all of these cars are great
In here from the future, just wanted to say nice thumbnail bro !
Way to go Ford! This is one Mustang GT I would definitely own! It's not just the power the car is putting down, it's everything, looks, handling, braking, ride and interior!
2014 Camaro ZL1 vs 2014 Shelby GT500 vs 2015 Challenger Hellcat. Now that would be one hell of a comparison.
Agreed, but in terms of knowledge now of the 3 cars' characteristics... The Hellcat would get embarrassed at everything but the 1/4 mile(and still not win by much), and the GT500 out lapped the ZL1 in terms of best overall lap, but the Camaro was better in terms of endurance/consistency over time. I like all 3, but those Challengers are pigs. I personally want to trade my GT for a GT500, waiting to see if they make one in 2018 or 19 before settling on a 350.
Kjraider2009 the camaro beats it on the track but on a drag strip the gt500 beats it cause of the light axle.
In order I would go...Ford Mustang GT 5.0, Chevy Camaro SS, then the Dodge Challenger SRT8
wouldnt we all....
@@vaioskoutis7998 No, not all of us. I HATEed the inside of the Camaro, u can't see SH$T outside of the car while driving.....engine wise, great 6.2L V8.
Ford is climbing back to the top, where it belongs. Amazing performance out of all 3 cars though.
Thought I’d bring you back to this video 12 years later
That 5.0 owns
I just bought a 2012 5.0 mustang... And it is bad to the bone lol
challenger has the best exhaust note hands down
it makes me laugh when the most expensive challenger cant even beat the base model mustang, and barely keep up with the camaro lol its funny
That was most definitely not the base model mustang. That GT had the brembo option and the special edition brown leather interior. I'm pretty sure all three of these were all the top of the line fully loaded cars.
Derek Butler luxury doesn’t count. The camaro can still beat it easy.
Oh how have the times changed lol
All the cars where the fully loaded option
If you want to choose a vehicle for its performance and low price, go with the Mustang.
If you want to choose a vehicle for its Muscle car looks, go with the Challenger.
If you want to choose a vehicle for it is intermediate performance and you have plenty of money to splurge, go with the Camaro.
Raul Martinez agreed
Why the hell is a Challenger in the "Pony Car War?"
:/
Good question.
Since 2011 the Mustang has been unbeatable.
Zelmar Hernandez More like since forever lol
Then Tesla entered the chat
@@FUBBATesla isn't really the same type of car though. It's faster in a straight line, but so are all sorts of Audis and BMWs. I think Teslas are cross-shopped more with those sort of tech-laden luxury/sport sedans rather than 2-door RWD muscle cars. It's just a different market.
That Ford is a Flat Out Road Demon.
Ford Mustang is my choise.
It’s my choize as well
adrian m8 It’s my choithe too
@@GyroPyro121212 rosetta stone is your choice
My car right there the 2011 5.0 :)
Dodge makes me smile, chevy makes me frown, and ford.... well the're like heaven on earth, what can I say?
Still enjoy my 2011 GT. It was a tough choice between the Challenger, but in the end the Mustang won out for me.
The engine sound that Challenger creates is just incredible!!!
The 5.0L mustang is the best but the challenger needs more credit but they need to lower the price. Thats the old 6.1l the 6.4l is faster.
5.0 has been king since 2010. Its 2024 and it's still unmatched 😎
i will take any of them! im really still shocked that we are watchin these 3 400+horsepower cars together again!
Ford finally stepped up, didn't overrate the hp numbers, and built a car we could all be proud of, I own a 2011' gt lots of mods, but something sexy about the passion purple challenger, lol, Btw, i only only buy black cars, lol, look better in the shade, shade..........
I just bought a black 2011 GT CS, with only 33,000 km, Roush axle back and CAI :) I get it on Saturday , can't wait .
I got the black 2010 Camaro SS thing has been a tank all its life other than the god awful A/C system changes I had to do twice that cost $2000 every time.
El mustang es mi auto favorito
Beast sound from the Challenger!
Ever notice that when the Camaro SS came out, there were a million reviews. "Let's pit the best from the big three against each other! Chevy wins! Yeah!" Then the Mustang got the 5.0 and more reviews came. "Let's pit the best of the three against each other again for a rematch! Ford wins! Yeah!" Then the Challenger got the 392 engine, and then the reviews. "Dodge did... something to one of their cars. The fat one with the retro name, maybe." No comparisons with the 392, from anybody!
I like challenger better than all of them
It's to heavy, you should write a letter.
wow, 14 yrs ago... wonder how it woulda looked in the 23's? betting about the same- we know who wins the 24 already though :(
Just got a challenger srt8 for 16th birthday present, has everything a kid could ever want
At the end of the day it's all about liking the shape. And I just love the way Camaro looks. Drove all 3 ( + bmw coupe) before committed to buying. All drive beautiful.
"at the end of the day it's all about the shape" ? I highly disagree, but I guess to some people that's more important
+gage brai Now, it will require only YES or NO answer - if your favorite Camaro/Mustang/Challenger looked like Honda Element or Toyota Prius or Nissan Centra, would you buy it?
No question is ever a yes or no answer.my answer is : you put a coyote 302 in it, I'll drive it.
Hey can you compare the Viper, corvette and the new Thunderbird or GT, thanks!!
I too was a Dodge Fanboy until I test drove the Challenger SRT8 and the Mustang 5.0....I just picked up my 2012 5.0 and LOVE IT!!!
can you tell me how? the mustang has the best 0-60 time and 1/4 mile stops and turns the best ..and the best mpg oh and to top it off it cost less ?
When the Challenger did the burnout test, its engine sounded the baddest...like a mean ass monster. DODGE IS A BEAST!
Im a stang guy but that burnout of the Challenger looks so badass!
MotorTrend drivers are superior to any other magazine's drivers. You guys rule.
@Taslak i didn't buy it simply for it's interior. I bought it for it's 6.2 ltr 420+ HP, 400 torque , body design and style. not to mention that the 69 was my favorite body style, and the 2010 completely retro'd and still stayed true to the classic style. i did however put in carbon fiber interior trim and with the standard limo lighting inside the doors, it is sweeeet!. And the reason there are more mustangs is because the Camaro wasn't made between the years 2002 and 2010.
The Challenger is for people who want 95% of the thrills of the Mustang and Camaro, with none of there drawbacks.
Sadly, the Camaro and Challenger need to go on a diet. It's pretty rare that a heavier, more powerful car will beat a lighter car. Props to Ford for understanding that!
Boss 302 is in a higher class than the SRT8, but in an ideal race the Boss 302 would win. BUT, only by .1 seconds. Boss 302 stats: 0-60 in 4.2, quarter mile in 12.6 Challenger SRT8 stats: 0-60 in 4.6, quarter mile in 12.7. It may be big and heavy and slower off the line, but that 6.4L V8 with 470lb-ft of torque sure as hell helps! :P I'm a Mustang guy myself, but I gotta admit, the new SRT8 is the new big kid on the block! :P
What nobody realizes is that these new 5.0s are making not even 10 less hp than a camaro ss which is a liter bigger and also is 200 lbs heavier
The 2011+ Mustang GT actually puts more power to the wheels than the Camaro SS, stock vs stock. With that and the weight difference, no wonder it's faster.
I think the Camaro looks cool, but in my opinion the Challenger looks way cooler and the Mustang looks great. The thing is in my opinion is the Mustang really has now downsides, the gas milage is better than the Challenger, the cabin's way nicer than the camaro (WAY NICER), and the looks are nothing short of awesome, along with a lighter car and 400+ horse power. There's nothing to complain about. Mustang's got my vote, can't wait to get one.
The Mustang wins on all fronts by a fair margin with the smallest displacement, and people are still trying to say the other two smoke it? The lightest, smallest car, usually wins. I don't have a V8 but I love my 2011 Sixer!
Mustang quit playing in 2011 👀
It's amazing what cars do now. We all figured the glory days were gone after the early 70s. I remember a guy boasting his 1978 Plymouth Arrow went 70 in the quarter!
I bought my 2011 GT Premium in 2018. It only had 7;828 km on it at the time. It now has 31,135 km on it.. It will go160 mph +
Not really fair. 2010 Challenger with a 6.1 vs. the new 20115.0 Coyote.......try the 2011 392 SRT8 instead. I'd still take the Mustang. Too bad the Challenger is "frozen in time". The R/T 5.7 has the same power in 2020 as it did in 2008....that's 12 YEARS stuck at 375hp. Not one hp more. The Mustang GT has had 5 power increases since then. 300hp in 2008, 315 in 2010, 412 in 2011, 420 in 2013, 435 in 2015 and 470hp in 2018. The 392 has been stuck at 480ish since 2011.....nearly a decade. Dodge should be ashamed.
392 wasn't a thing back then.
@skribbal This video is from April 5, 2010, shortly after the 2011 Mustang was released, while the 2011 SRT8 was only announced in October-November of 2010, so there is no way it could've been the 2011 Challenger SRT8.
Wow, what a shock - I saw this review and before I watched it I knew what would win - the Ford. Why? It is the newest redesigned car. In the last match up when it was not redesigned, it lost. now it won. What a shock!
@MaxxPowaa The point of a mustang isn't to buy a prefabricated road eater, but to instead by a basic GT (only for the V8) Then build the car up, make it unique, make it your own! That's what made it popular in the 60's-70's, and that's what anyone who desire's one should do now! This is the pure essence of American Muscle!
Motor Trend says the 392 does the 1/4 mile in 13 seconds flat, so the Boss beats it by more than .1 seconds.
@ Kasra Ghorbani
Since when does a car that rips around the skid pad @ 0.92G (Avg) running 275 mm rear tires not have any grip? LOL. I drove this car and it has a ton of grip. A surprising amount actually.
wow, anecdotal story, that totally mean much more than a comparison test, especially on a highway where the driver's willingness to be stupid matters much more than the car's dynamics.
The other day I passed a genesis coupe in my old focus, WITH WINTER TIRES, so that must mean it's better.
The very blatant 5.0 badge on each side of the front fenders. Also the fog lights on the grill for the GT.
That Challenger gave me an eargasm
Yeah baby. 2011 mustang gt 5.0
I bought this model. 1st time I saw it at convention center i wanted it especially 5.0
All in all thank you America for The Gts , SRT8s. & SS made here in AMERICA
The 2010-14 Camaro SS was made in Oshawa, Canada so technically you are not wrong. Same with Challenger / Charger I believe.
The way I see it, for the most part cars are just getting better and better. The difference that this video shows are not what most people would not care about. It boils down to preference.
IMHO the Mustang looks the best out of all three cars.
Eye catching? Maybe not stock but there is so much you can do to it to make it look better.
All 3 muscle cars look great, perform great, and are eye turning.
I honestly think Dodge and Chevy lost sight of the true muscle car feel *cue the haters*
In all seriousness, Ford messed around with the independent rear suspension thing in some of the Cobras as well as the Tbirds and Cougars. The Tbirds and Cougars handled like luxury sedans while the Cobras only had marginally better handling than the GT. IRS is meant to give added handling while giving added comfort, but it truly fails to deliver on either account.
does the charger srt8 have a chance with any of these 3 cars? because its never compared with the 3...
hey motortrend wheres the part about the mustangs transmission problems, engine knocking, speed limiters, and driveshaft failures?
2011 Ford vs 2010 GM and Challenger????
something is wrong!!!!!
I love my HEMI!!!
Both GM and Mopar fans should thank Ford for bringing the Challenger and Camaro back!
I was really disappointed in the Camaro's visibility and size inside the car because I love how it looks.
But props to the Mustang.
@JeffYaddow The general consensus is that the Camaro favored styling over ergonomics and functionality. It doesn't matter how tall you are since you can adjust the height of the seats, but the windows are just ridiculously narrow all around and the A-pillars are obnoxiously thick..just like the steering wheel.. If you have the power seats, your head will literally hit the roof in the Camaro if you're over 6'2ish, and that's with the seat all the way down.
@Skatchwanguyz what are the drawbacks? high performance? affordability? great mpg?
@AutomotiveReviewers yeah camaros and mustangs are subcompact with the mustang slightly larger than the camaro (6'ers can actually sit in the rear seat), the camaros are decorations, and the challenger is just down right comfy in the srt8 version
Of course the Mustang won. Its always won over the years, for its performance and power. That Challenger is pretty sick too, and sounds amazing! The Camaro looks good on the outside, but thats probably it.
@AutomotiveReviewers The newer ones yes but the Z28 from the second generation... that was truly a real muscle car!
@geedee3 ok i agree with that..but if it was your money would you spent more money on a worse car ? or less money on a better car?
In New York just having the SRT & 6.4 Emblem is good enough. I was getting gas months ago and someone said 'really nice'. I was getting gas this week and a Charger pulled in behind my Challenger SXT-plus It was the 6.4 Hemi badge and emblem SRT in grill. It was my turn for complements. We can't go too fast in N.Y., but we do turn heads. SRT= Street Race Technology.
@Perksk8 lets hope the new 5.0 isn't more fragile for all the extra parts that requires.
The mustang honestly looks more attractive without exaggerating.
i am a chevy fan, but i do admit that the mustang gt is better than the camaro ss in every way. however, the challenger was slower than the camaro and didn't handle as well either.
i think the results should have been this:
1. mustang
2. camaro
3. challenger
i know the camaro is not practical because the windows are small, but who cares? this is a performance car test, not a minivan test.
I own an srt8 charger and this week i drove a manual coupe mustang, and a automatic convertible mustang.. im thinking on buyin one convertible, but... it doesnt corner as well as the srt8, it moves alot in the corners..
Plan on getting one this Tuesday
Wow I don't know of any two cars from different companies that look so similiar, the Camaro ss and challenger look nearly identical.
@W4TCH4W Thanks for the feedback, yeah I will look into some superchargers
This old news and I will point out they haven't redone this since the Challenger came out with the 392. I have said many time and a lot of reviewers agree with me, the Challenger is not a pony car it is a grand tour. People also talk about price but if you spec out the other two to the level of what is included in the Challenger's price they are all real close.
I believe USA today just published an article saying ford has the second highest customer satisfaction rating among all brands...
Yes sir, you caught me, no capital G... I'm really not trying to be the grammar police, but I respect Ford for not getting a government bailout. While I do agree we, the US, have dug ourselves a huge hole we will get back on track. I'm not a patriot and don't buy into that kind of stuff, but I love living here and always will. Good luck to you and take care.
Man I'm just saying there is no legitimate excuse to why the GT500 Super Snake couldn't be a Ford GT in a mustang's body. That's what I would expect for $83k
@MrOfcFriendly i am a mustang fanboy, but i do have to agree with you. You look like a boss when you're behind the wheel.
This video is 100 % true. I respect camaros, but would not wanna own one. I would like a challenger but ford mustang wins me over
Is it fair to say that none of us really care that the Challenger comes in last in every review b/c we all know it sounds and looks the best? The Chevy gets a ton of hate b/c it's made by GM, and therefore comes with moral/political baggage. The Mustang is the much-loved underdog, pulling out consistent victories despite having less power and an antiquated live axel.
I own 2011 GT and glad I do the Ford was the only one that hit a home run with the retro styling mustang Chevy didn’t the challenger did not too mention dodge has milked the life out off that design which is ridiculous. Ford Mustang regained its place as top street car just like it did with the original 5.0👍😊✌️
Now the stang has a bite that matches that bark.
@proviperson The SRT8 IS the 392. It's called the "SRT8 392". They don't mention 392 because it's like repeating it.
Wonder why they haven't done a 2012 or now 2013 Pony car wars comparison yet. I would love for them to do this every year.
say what you will about the challenger, and it's general lack of qualiy and polish compared to the other two, but by god it looks unbelievably cool.
@Shadowtail03 lol you're great. You can't even read. I merely said the Mustangs have outsold the CAMAROS since the late 90s, excluding the years the Camaro was not in production after 2002. Where you got Challenger from is beyond me. Yes the first generation Challengers ended production in '74. All i did was state a fact and you go off on me. I also like how you think I'm a kid.
i actually wanted a camaro at first, but then i test drove it after i tested the mustang and i just couldnt stand driving the camaro. its like being cooped up in a box that you cant even see out of. so i went with the mustang and im kinda glad i did; considering how much less it cost.
@17etnies have you searched about camaro and challenger problems too. if i take your comprehensive research then i assume that every car other than the mustang works flawlessly
Oh and you should google the mustangs power rating or read edmands inside line. The new 5.0 is heavily underrated. It's actually about 450-460 at the crank. Insideline dyno'd there's at 394rwhp and 379tq. Mine dyno'd in Oregon, elevation 236. @ 404rwhp and 391tq
the cars are so similar in style and performance how can anyone love one and hate the others
I guess this is why Chevy tries to compare the LS1 to the Boss instead of the new GT500 lol. I'm a diehard ford car but still no one can argue ford doesn't make a good V8, it's significantly smaller but yet it is incredibly fast.
@EvilxMerlin - That's my point. Mustang has always been better with a solid axle. The Terminators offered marginally better handling than the GT of that same age. Comparing the Terminators with a car made 10 years later isn't truly comparing apples and apples (especially since the GT now makes more power than the Terminator).
so the mustang is:the best looking by FAR,has the best fuel economy,is the cheapest, its the fastest,etc... so what is there to argue about?
