    When I think about it, I literally can not think of a coaster accident that occurred purely off of engineering and design issues. I'd say that's an astounding win for the industry. Ride ops and neglecting maintenance are time and time again the leading cause for the majority of these gnarly injuries/deaths.

    • @JacobBohley
      @JacobBohley 11 месяцев назад +8

      Steel Vengeance's collision was because the trains were too heavy for the brake fins so one just went through the brakes into the station. It's the only one I can think of but yeah ride ops are definitely the most common cause

      The fact that some manufacturers have better safety records than others implies to me that engineering and design really do contribute, maybe mostly by aiding or impeding maintenance. Fury is getting all the attention now but B&M genuinely seems to be the safest manufacturer out there--from Ryan the Ride Mechanic's videos, I gather this is probably because B&M is the ride mechanic's friend and they go out of their way to make these rides easy to inspect and maintain. Old Schwarzkopfs clearly have an issue with derailments, maybe because of their intense forces and wheel assembly design--if you maintain them correctly, this doesn't happen, but somehow it keeps happening to them specifically. And a lot of the "large passenger fell out of restraint" accidents were abetted by the restraint latching and registering green in a position where it really should not have, because it was not capable of restraining the rider. Discretion by the ride ops could have prevented these accidents, but design issues meant that the first layer of protection had already failed.

    You missed a category: loose articles. If a ride has signs posted everywhere telling you to empty your pockets, DO IT! People get seriously injured both on-ride and on the ground from phones and keys flying out of peoples pockets. Also, if you lose something like your hat or phone while on the ride, DO NOT hop the fence into the restricted ride area to grab; many people have been killed from doing that more than you would think.

    Not sure if anyone else does this, but always test your restraints. For example when I go on raging bull and all I have is that weird looking single bar, i push back to see if its locked in. I do thos every time i'm on a coaster and it takes my anxiety down by a massive level. If you're still unsure, as coastertoons said, always ask a ride op for a second opinion. Hopefully this helps someone ease their fears while riding.

    • @mack_r-s
      @mack_r-s 9 месяцев назад

      I went to Canada's Wonderland a few weeks back, and it was the first time I've been on any of their big coasters and flat rides. Because of this, I always made sure to push up on the restraints to make sure I was fully locked in. It definitely eased my anxiety when going on massive rides like Yukon Striker and Behemoth.

  • @Soonjai
    @Soonjai 11 месяцев назад +13

    As for ride evacs being safe, there is at least 1 case where it almost whent completely wrong.
    Python at Efteling stopped at the very top of the lift hill with the front of the train already being over the crest. 2-3 cars where already on the little dip at the top of the lift. Staff followed standard procedure and evacuated the train back to front, but all the restraints where already unlocked. Because the train was unloaded from the back, the front at some point became hevy enough to pull the entire train over the crest.
    The guests still in the train had to pull their restraints down on the already moving train. Luckily everyone acted quick enough, the train navigated the course as it should be and nobody was hurt during this. There is a video of this on YT, you can find it by searching " Ongeluk met Python in Efteling"

    • @Zyghqwyv
      @Zyghqwyv 11 месяцев назад +6

      They SHOULD have tied off the coaster. If you look up "Grizzly californias great america POV" you can see at the top of the lift hill a red sign stating "100 percent tie off after 40 percent" It is mandatory to tie off a coaster that is on the "edge" of a drop. Furthermore, B&M puts trim brakes on their coasters. If you look up Medusa at six flags discovery kingdom, you see trims after the chain ends. These only brake when a coaster is on the edge of the drop.

    I was on Railblazer at California's Great America.
    I was buckling in my restraint and I was buckling the seatbelt when I accidentally put a big slit on one of my fingers and when the ride was over, there was a trail of blood from the slit leading to my hand excluding fingers and thumbs. Thankfully, there was a first -aid section right next to the ride so I got that slit fixed up...
    And then I went back on Railblazer again (this was when Railblazer was my favorite ride at the park(and it still is))😂.
    This felt more like a funny/wierd/painful story than an actual incident.

    When you think about it, roller coaster accidents are a lot like plane crashes. They’re incredibly rare, and the reason why they make the news is _because_ they’re so rare. And yet a lot of people perceive them as more dangerous because of the sheer height involved.
    I can’t exactly fault people for this, either, since I AM that person lol. But it is pretty silly when you think about it, how our brains can trick us like that.

    It wouldn't surprise me if the Gröna Lund accident was a maintenance issue. Gröna Lund has been having some economical issues recently, mainly due to covid, and Jetline is one of their older rides. I went last year, and while I normally always rave about how smooth the ride is, I remember it feeling "janky"? I'm obviously really not an expert, and that was a really long time before the accident so if something WAS off they probably shoule have fixed it in between, and it might've just been me being anxious, but still. I remember it being so smooth, and it really wasn't last time I rode it. It also wouldn't surprise me if they end up replacing it. Grönan has such a small area to build on, and while Jetline was almost universally loved I think they would probably try to shake off some of the bad press as well as squeeze in a "New" ride while they have the opportunity. It's still horrific though. While ride accidents are super rare, it's such a violent way to go if you do happen to be in one.

    Not to nitpick / not sure if you were intentionally exaggerating, but near the beginning you said there are hundreds of thousands of different roller coasters operating around the world. RCDB lists just 5,741 total roller coasters worldwide, including powered coasters and mountain coasters. If we divide that by two (to account for half the world's parks being closed at night time), and multiply it by 60 riders (guessing 3 trains of 20 people being average-ish), that would estimate just under 175,000 people riding a roller coaster at any given moment!

    5:40 I felt like the restraint for me on Batman The Dark Knight at six flags New england was too lose even though I would've been fine and the staff checked it and I said could you tighten it and they ignored me and continued checking restraints. I keep saying hello can someone tighten it? And I start to freak out and my mom next to me said HIS RESTRAINT IS LOOSE and then the operator said All restraints have been locked and checked, visual scan and I was freaking out raising my hands to get their attention and FINALLY they checked the restraint. Though I would've been fine looking back but at that moment I panicked. And when they checked it again it went down one more click.

    • @nicholasbonfiglio820
      @nicholasbonfiglio820 11 месяцев назад

      as scary as it can be if the restraint only went down one more click you would certainly be fine the ride wont dispatch if all restraints aren't fully locked plus if your still worried you can push the restraint down yourself even after the ride dispatches.

      @@KingGamingRoblox if you are in between, then you are ok, the reason it went down one more click is because they can push harder than you. You can safely ride with ratchets 1-2 clicks up. But more is probably pushing it. It also depends on the restraint and the seat

      Not an accident unless people get hurt or there is noticeable risk. Not being pulled up to the station does not qualify as risk

    Majority of rollercoaster accidents are caused by humans whether it’s the rider being stupid or the ride ops not doing their job

  • @Sonderax
    @Sonderax 11 месяцев назад

    Cant think of many, if any deaths due to poor ride design. Most incidents are based on poor maintenance and operations on the park side. These rides are completely over engineered and its for a reason. The work of the engineers truly shows when you take into account how much these rides operate

    I don't think fury's crack counts as a roller coaster, since nothing actually happened to the riders.
    edit: i don't think it counts as an accident is what i meant to say.
