I’m the opposite. I literally use my 11” M1 Pro everyday. I run my business and all on it. I think the iPad is one of the many use cases of typical RUclipsrs not using these devices for their intended purposes and focusing on creative and “power” use and reviewing them from narratives that don’t rate to the everyday user. My iPad is the second most important device in my lineup behind the iPhone 13 Pro. MacBook Pro 3rd, Watch and AirPod accessories after that.

I agree with your comment 100 percent. I use my iPad for civil engineering work and it is my primary device. Even with access to a MacBook and 6,000 dollar desktop I use my iPad for most if not all my work. I only rely on my desktop for some CAD work, otherwise my MacBook stays in its case and has been there ever since I got the iPad Logitech keyboard with trackpad over a year ago.

I agree with the “feature locking” being very bad. Who wants to buy a new device every year just because they made up an excuse? I loved that most of the new features came even to 5 year old devices. Android phone makers always made you feel you need a new device, sadly, apple is doing the same now with the iPad.

Since I got a Mac a couple of weeks ago, my iPad now only has one use: an Apple Pencil device. I still use it a lot to draw, write handwritten notes, do graphic design through Sidecar. Occasionally I’ll pick it up as a secondary screen when I’m playing something while talking on Discord or to read books, but now basically the only time that it is used it’s with an Apple Pencil in my hand.

My iPad Air 3 is still the Apple product I use the most these days. I use it a lot for watching RUclips and play digital board games on it. For these two things the larger screen is a big plus compared to my iPhone. I do hope the iPad gets more pro features too. I would like to use it also for coding more when I'm on the go. The iPad is still easier to carry around than my MacBook Pro (which is also 12.5 years old now - I considered to replace that with a MacBook Air, but I just bought a Mac Studio already). I have tried to use the iPad for coding, but the workflow isn't as great as on my Mac.

If I never liked playing computer games, I would probably be well enough with an iPad. Portable, bigger than iPhone, I use it for notes and light document work, reading. I have a windows laptop for gaming, I rarely use it for anything else.
Only thing that I was a bit unhappy with is the fact that Air4 doesn’t get a feature I was waiting for for some time: proper monitor support (stage manager)

I have literally been having this conversation with my M1 MacBook Air. I decided to try using an iPad as my main computer after I retired in 2015 - and I've managed to do it even since then. I bought the M1 MBA because I always felt like I needed a computer that wasn't just a tablet "just in case" and a few times that's been true - but I got this thing on launch, more than a year and a half ago. I've probably pulled it out 15 times. I use my 13" M1 iPad Pro with the magic keyboard for nearly everything. I keep wanting to reach up and touch my screen right now to edit this post but it's a stupid no touchscreen MBA. Moral of the story - pick the one you like and stick with it - the iPads are basically computers now.

Things that could make me consider upgrading my 2018 12.9" iPad pro:
    1) They come out with a 14" or larger model.
    2) They somehow make the sensation of using the pencil less slippery and more similar to using an actual pen or pencil.
    3) They put the front facing camera so it can be on the top when in landscape mode, where it would actually be useful.
    4) My current iPad pro breaks and I need to replace it.

If I need to sign documents at work, I use the Apple pencil.
I use at as a big screen iPhone for iMessage.
I use it as a second screen for Teams meetings with the laptop for actual work stuff.
Sometimes I use it with the keyboard and a Microsoft mouse for remote desktop into a Windows server. Bizarrely Microsoft mice work better with it than Apple’s Magic Mouse.
It is just that I use a fraction of what the A14 is capable of. It can outperform a Threadripper in some tasks, but the software really holds it back. I guess I will replace it at some point, but not any time soon.

I have a 2017 iPad Pro (obviously non-M1 but A12X) and use it for my sheet music when doing choir practice amongst other things. I also generally prefer playing my games on it because of the physical screen size. I might not upgrade it in the foreseeable future, as long as it continues doing what I need it to do. I do not see myself living just with an iPad (or similar); my current workflow requires me to also use a computer, since the software I use is not available on tablets (be they iOS or Android-powered).

I find it easier to do everything on my iPhone and I only use an iPad to show numbers to clients. At the very most I may use it as a remote control for my television but I think it’s even easier to use my iPhone for that as well.

I still use my M1 iPad Pro all the time. Don’t need the massive power it has, but love it and prefer using it to my Mac - especially for photo editing. Also use it for watching most of my TV since I’ve got a stand for it plus it’s larger and has better speakers than my iPhone 11 and I like getting cozy on the couch with it. Also makes a great second screen for my Mac when I am using that on the go. Don’t see myself wanting to part with it any time soon, it’s basically my favourite Apple device.
I initially purchased the A12 powered iPad Air 3 back in 2019 and mainly just regret not going for the 2018 iPad Pro instead. If I had that one definitely wouldn’t have gone with the M1 iPad Pro. State Manager is a nice addition, but for an 11” device I find the current multitasking interface more comfortable.

For me personally, the iPad Pro can do everything I need to do on a Mac, and for a period of time, I did everything from my iPad because it was the most technologically advanced device I owned. But after upgrading my iPhone and MacBook to the 13 mini and m1 Air respectively, those two devices when working together allows me to do my work more efficiently than with just the iPad. Nowadays, the iPad is my least used Apple device, but I still keep it around for the occasional drawing session and that one mobile game I like, but those are use cases that I don’t do a lot nowadays.

As a content creator, most of my work can now be done on my iPad Air 4 instead of my aging 2017 MBP. I use my 12.9 M1 with MKB every day for hours. Web browsing, photo editing, media consumption, chatting, emails, shopping, writing with pen. Phone screen is not big enough to be comfortable for longer use. I tried all new macbooks for 1-2 weeks: 13 air, MBP 14 and 16 and macOS is way less comfortable and slower to use than touch plus the animations are way worse than ipadOS. Example in safari swipe back - animation is almost junky, not pretty and you need to swipe way more to go back. Or pull to refresh is not existing on macOS - when I discovered that it blew my mind that they still didn‘t add it. Switching between apps on macOS is also slower and not feeling good on macOS while on ipad you just swipe with all fingers on screen, it feels great. Air screen (contrast, dynamic range) and refresh rate sucks, MBP 14 battery life is way worse than 16 and Air. 16 is a huge behemoth, which I can‘t have with me on train, kitchen, toilet. After few days I wasn‘t even picking it up to take with me. And not having touch for scrolling when I’m in bed or sofa is a nogo, using touchpad is very uncomfortable in that position. RUclipsrs are just out of reality complaining on ipads all the time and it‘s so annoying.

I use my 12.9" 2018 iPad nearly every day. As a math teacher I use it as a virtual white board which I either connect to a projector for in person classes or to Zoom for online classes. I use it to mark up exams and post the solutions. I use it for doing handwritten mathematics.
But just like you, I don't have any reason to upgrade. My 2018 12.9" iPad has more than enough power for needs involving sketching. I don't care about Center Stage. For any uses that don't involve using the pencil, I use my M1 MacBook Air, with its file system and its traditional applications and its multi-window system. The ideal device for me would be a MacBook that I could draw on, but Apple is not interested in going in that direction.
I probably won't upgrade my iPad until they make a 14" version. The bigger screen would be worthwhile for me, given how I use it.

The phone is also why I’m dragging along and not refreshing my 2018 iPad 6th gen. If I need anything more than my phone then it’s probably a task for my MacBook.
Now the iPad is still something I use more than my phone at home to watch videos with and the pencil is something I use at work. But that also means I don’t really need anything more powerful than a base iPad. So I’m really just waiting for Apple to phase out the Lightning port, put USB-C in the base iPad, and then get that iPad and use it for the next 4-5 years.

I have the 2020 iPad Pro with the A12Z. I really can’t tell any difference from when I got it and now. I rarely use multi window. I use 2, maybe 3, windows at a time and that only when traveling going between Safari, TripAdvisor, and maybe Maps or something else. I will also watch Netflix or other streaming apps before bed. I would be perfectly fine with an iPad Air, but I wanted the largest screen Apple made. So I got the Pro and the Magic Keyboard. I take that on trips because it's smaller than my laptop. I am not a power user and don't video edit or draw. I already have a setup at home for work when I need to have like 12-24 tabs in safari or chrome open for work. But even then, I need more RAM than what an iPad could provide. I usually use 14-24GB of RAM keeping everything open so it doesn't refresh. I could do this on the new M2 MacBook Air. But again, I wanted the largest screen so I got the 16" Pro. I also use dual monitors for work and multiple apps. I usually have Files, Outlook, 2-3 Excel workbooks, Teams, Edge, and some work apps. So I couldn't do that on an iPad. But when I travel and do not work, even then, an iPhone could suit me 99% of the time. It's just nice to be able to look at restaurant menus or other things on a big iPad screen. Not needed, but nice. Anyways, I will continue to use my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inch until it becomes unusably old so probably 3-5 more years. And for probably 5-7 years of use for what I do, I will continue to buy an iPad.

I bought a 2020 ipad pro exclusively to draw on. And honestly, I can't see a future ipad providing a better drawing experience, so I'll probably just grind this one into the dirt. But if it ever broke down, I'd immediately buy a new one to replace it. Having art as a creative outlet is worth more than money for me.
I'm just waiting for the day Apple lets us use the Apple Pencil on an iPhone. I'd kill for the day I can doodle sketches on my phone while out and about, and then load up the sketch on my ipad and polish it at home.
If it wasn't for the ecosystem, I'd be rocking a Samsung Note, because being able to draw is just that important to me.

I'm using my iPad Air 4 a lot, but I don't think I'll upgrade it soon.
    1. As a second display to my MacBook Pro 14" while away from my monitor.
    2. For note-taking and explaining doubts to my students
    3. For reading books.
    4. Watching something on my bed before sleeping or when I'm in Kitchen. (I do watch movies on MB Pro if I'm on my chair)
    5. Mobile Games (Mostly arcade but sometime PubG Mobile)
    6. FaceTime calls (sometimes MacBook and iPhone too, but iPad is the middle ground)
I'm using way less than I used to since I bought my MacBook, but I'm still using it. I wish Apple gave a mini-sized iPhone pro. I take many pictures of my friends on portrait, so telephoto is kind of a deal breaker; hence, I went with the 13 pro.

I always enjoy your takes on things, even though I almost 100% disagree with the one you specifically have on the iPad. You basically made the generally absolutely valid point that there’s zero actual need to upgrade to the newest apple product every year, and that there’s also no actual need for virtually anyone to own every single product line from apple. That’s why for me ever since I got an iPad it always made the idea of a laptop in my life completely redundant, as I already had an iMac in case I want to do legacy computer workflow stuff. And an iMac is simply a superior hardcore workhorse over the in comparison “gimped desktop experience” of a laptop.
But your arguments of new features being exclusive to new devices, and prior devices still being sufficiently performant for a long time can be applied to pretty much all things tech.
It makes more sense to keep expanding the capabilities of iPadOS instead of just dumping macOS on the iPad and turning it into a redundant product category: a MacBook clone when the MacBook already exists. I love the iPad and the direction apple has been going with it. It has all the pro apps I need as a professional trader, so I flawlessly run 100% of my business on it.
I do see that my iMac obviously has more expanded capabilities and I enjoy those too. But they’re usually not needed in my day to day business life. So my iMac is great companion device I enjoy using for fun tech geek and admin stuff.
But I hope and am sure apple will also bring those specific pro apps to the iPad you and other RUclipsrs keep asking for.

I agree with your comments 100 percent. I have been saying for years that, no one really needs all three of these devices (i.e. an iPhone, an iPad, and a Apple laptop computer). For myself, I do not own an iPhone or a modern Apple laptop (my vintage laptops each still have DVD super-drives, work with Apple's white remote control, and the Apple logo on the back always "lights up" when the unit is on). If, I want to do computer work, I use my Apple desktop. So, the basic iPad with max RAM and the data cell option continues to all of my needs. And, I use my iPad each day (smile...smile).

If Apple's iOS 16 really requires even higher/more costly RAM and SSD, IMHO they are most likely going to price themselves out of most of the market. Perhaps force people to abandon the tablet for a laptop form. For the record I love my iPad, but clearly the M1 chip and 16GB of RAM has not really met its potential under the current iOS.

when the iPad Pro came out I loved the idea of a huge screen and though I could use it and replace my Mac but I was wrong. yes it is true for most people that just browse the web and watch videos yes, but I'm not that person. I though I could but no. I do browse the web and watch a lot of videos like 95% or the time but that 5% of the time when I really need a computer is when I run into an issue.
I use the have an iPad mini the first Ten one and I loved it. so I traded in my 12.9 inch pro for a mini. I realized I really don't use the big iPad Pro and can't really justify the price that I spent when I could have just bought a Mac. Also I just came back from an international trip a few days ago for about 2 weeks and didn't take my iPad or miss it at all. I have a 13 pro max so the big screen helps and its basically my iPad in pocket form.
I'm so happy with the mini. in my opinion its the perfect a little bigger then the iPhone and can do more with drawing and the pencil but not the Mac. the mini to me is the perfect note taking and small more portable computer size that can still do more the my phone but no more then my Mac.

Enough with the "glorified iPhone" horse shit. This was true a few years ago, but with iOS16, not anymore. The iPad is NOT a Mac, so stop pretending Apple should turn it into one. However, for those of us that actually take advantage of its size and interface (especially in iOS16), it's well beyond an iPhone in terms of the possibilities it provides.
