When I started buying computers in the 1980’s my friend and teacher gave this advice about updating equipment: “When the computer you have no longer does what you need it to do, then it’s time to buy a new computer.” This advice was said in this wise review. Thank you!
@@bobjensen4051 Hmmm. I don’t like my Mac at all. I ignore it, and have only had it for 2 years. It’s beautiful, but a dust-catcher. My iPad is pretty much attached to me permanently. I was a heavy Windows user for 25 years until mu last Dell laptop died at age two. I switched to an iPad exclusively afterward and didn’t have a PC for three years. I never missed it either, and today……I would never have one again.
I’d say that’s true AS LONG AS you understand that most likely means that the computer most likley is fine and does things the same … but you and the world around you change. Today it’s not just the computer, it’s the apps, accessories like apple pencil… for instance your old computer is probably tethered to a desk. No longer is that an acceptable constraint.
One attribute that you missed was the amount of usable memory on your iPad. My current iPad still does everything that I need, but the operating system has grown over the years to take up over half of my available memory storage. I had to remove photo storage just so there was enough room available for OS updates.
I don’t want to lay a fee just to save my photos, but I’ve had to delete photo backup and still space is at a premium. I’d like to be able to delete duplicate photos but can’t🤷♀️ I can’t download latest upgrade as there’s not enough space it says🫣
@@minwade5436 I am sure security updates are integrated in the operating system updates. As such, even if it was possible to revert back to a previous version it would open my iPad up to potential security risks and leave me more vulnerable to being hacked.
In my opinion, Rich is the first host who speaks at a speed I can easily understand, his voice is so pleasing - he makes his opinion very believable. 8:43
Only boomers could unironically brag about being dumb enough to need someone to talk nice and slow to them. That’s how you talk to people with Down syndrome.
Still using a 5th Gen 7year old base iPad. Still works great and does what I want. I mostly use it as a media consumption device. Videos, TV, movies, reading, music, podcasts, email and web surfing. If you are like me 7 year old tech is just fine.
Thanks! The reasons you stated are why I bought an iPad Air 2 1/2 years ago, but things have changed. I will buy the new 13” Pro. I am legally blind, so the filters are different to me. The brightness and contrast come first, and the size is equal in need as bigger really is better for those of us with reduced vision. The clincher is the camera in the middle of the long side! I do telehealth visits and Zoom meetings, and now I won’t have to turn the iPad around to portrait configuration! I’m going all out and getting a new case with a built in keypad, too. I love my Magic Keypad that I use with both the Mac and the iPad, but I need to be smarter-portable as the iPad goes everywhere I go - even the grocery store! For me, it is all about sight and what I can see. It may well be my last iPad because they do last so long, and I am 81, so I will have the best device I can buy to travel those last miles with me. (I could never survive a hospital stay without my iPad!). My iPhone once saved my life, when EMS had to find me using GPS, and my iPad is cellular enabled, so each one can find the other when one is left behind, too. Nearly every blind person I know uses Apple devices because they have the best accessibility features and keep us tech-y! Thanks for your review! It helped me narrow down my filters and decide to buy this wonderful new Pro model! 👍 😀
I only change hardware under two conditions. 1) the battery has become hopeless. 2) the OS is no longer supported for security reasons, as I do online banking, a bit extra security lets me sleep at night. Great video great advice
An Apple Store will put in a new battery for you. I had that done after 4 years with my iPhone. I think it was $68 to let them do it. We will do that with my 2 year old Air, which I will hand down to my husband. I always get the new one because I have the greater need.
When my battery died, the apple store exchanged my iPad for the price of a battery with the same model that was apparently still available after 6 years.
Wow, your iPad upgrade video was excellent and, truly a breath of fresh air. Over the years, I have owned three of Apple's basic iPad models: the 4th generation (the first model with a retina display); the 6th generation (the first model to support Apple's 1st generation pencil); and the 9th generation (the first model with Apple's "center stage" function). Also, my basic iPad 9th generation with 256GB and the cell data option, is paired with a Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard. When you talked about "price", for anyone who is in education, the military, or a Veteran please note that, Apple, Inc. has a special web site for each group where all new devices are sold at a 10 percent discount which, is a nice savings for an iPad with a list price of $500 or more (smile...smile).
Great video! One of the factors to replace my iPad is battery life. If I have to recharge my iPad after an hour or less of usage, I think it's time to consider getting a new iPad.
I just bought the iPad 9. It was under $200 . I love it, the only iPad I ever owned was the 2nd generation. I think the 9 will be good for a few years but I am worried about storage.
I’m in the same boat as your sir. My 2018 IPad Pro has been an absolute CHAMP!! It’s running a little slow and the battery is still pretty good. I can’t complain !!!!
I had an iPad Mini that I purchased for just traveling. I just use the Folio case. It had a trade in value of $250. I also have a 2020 iPad Pro that I love and wanted to keep. I bought an iPad Pro 11” with Folio case. I kept it for a week and returned it to an Apple Store. I bought 2024 13” iPad Air with Folio case. Yes I would rather have face recognition but the finger print censor works well. I don’t use any Magic Keyboards. I just use the on screen keyboard. I don’t have an Apple Pencil but if I purchased one I would only use it for notes. I am considering purchase Ring an Apple keyboard or the Samsung keyboard. I’m 70 years old and take care of my dad who will turn 102 in July. I sit on the sofa most of the day and use my iPads. I surf the web and watch videos and movies. I enjoyed your video and subscribed.
I used to "upgrade" my iPads every two years and I got very little benefit from those upgrades. Right now my iPad is 7 years old and I can't find a reason to replace it. But full disclosure - I keep all my stuff for a long time. My computer is 6 years old, my Chevy Tahoe is 25 years old, I have an old camo hunting jacket that is over 30 years old, and I still have a socket wrench set that I bought over 50 years ago. I guess you can say I'm a bit frugal (or "cheap" if you prefer).
I used the last comment to decide to upgrade my first generation 128Gb iPad Pro. Recently it no longer upgrades beyond iOS 16.7. I upgraded to generation 6 iPad Pro with 256Gb memory for $1199Cdn (refurbished) from Best Buy Canada. I need the larger screen for scanned sheet music, in portrait mode for playing gigs. The new iPad gives me much more storage space as I was also getting close to the limit on my original device.
What an amazing video! Your depth of information, and your ability to relay that information in a concise manner greatly help me make a decision that the 13 inch air is the one I needed I love your no-nonsense way of presenting facts and options, and I will be very happy to continue watching your videos. Thank you so much.
A very practical video! Since I own an iPad Air 3 the filter I'm using is hardware. Switching to the Pro line adds ProMotion, quad speakers, and an OLED screen if I go for the M4 model, so quite a leap. The only thing I'm debating is size. I've always thought 11" was a great, portable, size, but I'm wondering whether the 13" model can pull double duty as a laptop while still remaining a great tablet.
I still use the original iPad Mini as a clock. It is permanently on charge and on the wall and running a clock app. The Analog Clock display fills the screen and looks great. I now have a 2-year-old normal-sized iPad and I intend to hold on to it for another few years....then it also will become a clock on the wall.
Great video, thank you. A major consideration for me whenever I upgrade my iPad will be finding the right mix of sizes and capabilities between iPhone, iPad, and laptop/ computer. One question is whether the largest iPad with magic keyboard could serve as my main computer. If so, and I could do everything on just two devices, both running iOS, that would be an attractive option. I’d probably choose the largest iPhone as well (which I already have), which is closer in size to the iPad Mini. But, if I still need a laptop I’d be less inclined to choose the largest iPad. If anyone has thoughts about that please share!
I love your common sense approach. One aspect you do not cover is there is a significant adjustment for seniors going to a device without a home button. .. i still can get confused figuring out what i am supposed to do
Well Done Rich!!!, Lots of information at a nice precision explanation of the 2024 iPad line up. My wife has been getting my old iPads as I upgrade and then down to the grandkids when they visit. So currently iPad Pro 11 (2021 Xmas), iPad Air 2, iPad 3, however the iPad 3 has finally run to end of life. The IOS has not been upgradable for a long time and now the apps the grandkids used will not run anymore, R.I.P., served a long time. Thus now I am looking at the latest and then proceed with the pass down to continued through their life span. However, the iPad Air 2 is now not able to have IOS update to 17.x and pretty much stuck on 15.X (they did have a minor update a few weeks ago, which was a surprise). The new iPad’s 2024 are very thin and lighter from previous versions, with better WiFi-6e for a faster connection and all the other improvements on screen display and processor. Best to all with the new Tech.
Great video, Rich, I like how you organize the content and I do like your practical advice as a great hair person like myself I could find this video becoming quite helpful for people. At the same time it’s clear you do know these products from the tech side as well.
Thanks, Rich, I get lost in the weeds so I really appreciated your nitty gritty approach! As somebody who fought the phone and computer tech revolution I now cannot imagine being without my iPad! I have a generation 9 and was considering a Pro for the larger size when a friend told me she was almost sorry she got hers because toting it around wasn’t as easy. Since she has used all the new bells and whistles, however, she has changed her mind about it. I am going to stick with your criteria in making my choice when the mood strikes me❣️
I upgraded to pro when I fell in love with facial recognition on my phone. The old one is a backup when my pro is recharging. Someone suggested using the old one as an electric photo frame on your livingroom sidetable. I’ve also had great luck reselling on Craigslist.
I was using a 7yrs old iPad Pro 10.5”, the memory was almost full and it was slowing down, also iOS 18 might not work with it; so I’ve bought the new iPad Pro 11” M4 and I plan to keep it for 6yrs+. It’s the same with my iPhones I keep them at least 5yrs between upgrading.
Me too. My 2018 iPad Pro would still be in my hands but for this RUclips stuff. Apple products are too expensive (at least for me) to upgrade every year. Plus, they're just built to last.
Rich, thank you for another excellent video. I’ve now got an iPhone 15 pro but haven’t decided on an iPad. I’ve had my iPad Pro for about six years I think. The charging port is defective so I’m going to see if it can be mended before having to find $$$ for a new one. It gets an enormous amount of use, every day! I’ll follow your suggestions when the time comes - many thanks!
I’ve just upgraded. I have a 2018 10.5 pro… a few years ago it started having “issues” cannot unlock with fingerprint while charge cable connected, the screen was being unresponsive prior to that whilst charging. I put up with it for years. I’ve finally upgraded because I was running out of storage. Stuff I didn’t want to delete. The hardest part was choosing Air or Pro… I ended up going Pro simply because I believe in investing in longer ownership times…. 11” is fine for me, and saves me a bunch! I couldn’t justify upgrading prior since I wanted 512Gb or greater. I couldn’t justify the extra $$$ for 12.9, but now the m4 11” has 512 as an option, it was a no brainer! Hopefully the price premium for the Pro works out…..
I don't think so. At least not yet. The 2018 iPad Pro is a great iPad. I'd still have mine if it weren't for me making RUclips videos. I traded it in and got $315 after 6 years of use!
Still rocking the 3 yr old, 9th gen A13 model with the optional *256GB* storage. If I had the 64GB model, I'd be ready to change-up already. Adequate storage is a huge key in this sort of decision. My iphone & MacBook are much newer. For me, the ipad is more of an afterthought.
My present iPad (older, not pro) I use almost exclusively. I note that some movies are so dark I can’t watch. I tried to lighten without success. Other than that, the pictures okay. Also, when notified there’s a software update, it doesn’t load. It says it wasn’t connected to power when it had been. Thanks for you video. Really helped me understand the differences. I am pretty much a technical ignoramuses. Im an old lady and I only learn by trial and error.
I bought the iPad Air 13” over the pro model because of the cost. I have or my wife uses my 12.9 in pro and we never have need the pro features. I am very pleased with it. Enjoyed your presentation.
So I've got a video coming up entitled 13" Air vs 13" Pro. I made a decision. But I'll probably change my mind before the video goes live! Thanks so much for watching!
Good video. I got the Generation 10 iPad last week and I traded in my old one which was a generation 8. That IPad was always a little squirrelly , it was the only IPad that I had a problem with. I got 140.00 for the old one but of course I got the apple care for 2 years. Plus a cover. And 256 in memory. Plus it doesn’t have the home button, which I keep trying to hit! lol 😜.
I think the 10th gen iPad is the best bang for the buck. My wife is going to trade in her older iPad soon for that iPad. She's hanging onto it as long as possible because she likes the home button. Thanks so much for watching!
I was very happy with my 2013 Air2 until recently. Only just upgraded to an Air 5 as the Air 2 battery was discharging even with the power hooked up. Apple store advised the Air 2 was 'vintage' and no longer supported by Apple,,,,,, And yes, I can notice the difference.,,,,LOL Thanks for your videos.
Thanks for a simple and sensible review and discussion on the iPad line up. BTW your style and approach here reminds me so much of the late great Andy Rooney!
Sometimes it’s just about want and not about need. I went down to my local Apple Store on the day of release and traded in my M2 11 for the M4 11. Love the screen and camera placement. Picked up the MKB which I didn’t have with the M2. It was interesting, the demographic of the people lined up to pick up the new iPads were all in my wheel house, mid 60’s. Granted it was mid week, but interesting . I’ve lost count of the iPads I’ve owned going back to the original, 7 or 8 I believe. This is the nicest so far.
I bought a 12.9” iPad Pro with 256GB with cell capability when it first came out. It still works great for e-mail and movies but it is no longer supported by Apple and the home button ID drives me crazy. I bought a 2008 iPad Pro 12.9” with cell capability when it first came out. There were enough upgrades from the first 2015 version to make it worth while and I decided that the 512GB would extend its life span. So far, so good. Since it is nearly 6 years old, the battery is shot so I just keep it plugged into a small power bank. One of these days I’ll get around to replacing the battery. I was tempted by the new OLED displays and the M series processors but they cost too much money when my 2008 model still does everything I need it to do. When the 2008 model stops accepting system upgrades then I will look at maybe getting a new one. I don’t expect that to happen for another few years.
I think you missed something. You talk about "pull" drivers: what things about the new machines would cause you to buy one? But not that much about "push" drivers. My 2017 10.5" iPad Pro (the precursor to your 2018 model) still does everything I need it to do (mostly; no Stage Manager). BUT the battery life is notably shorter today than even a year ago. "New hardware features" is one of your considerations. I didn't hear you mention how the battery life on new machines would compare to older machines. Apple's made a LOT of iPads in a LOT of configurations - about 120 by my count. OTHER THAN when the iPad no longer supports the current OS, what would be the "push" driver that would say "This iPad needs to be upgraded"? Battery life, for sure (I have a Mini 2 that literally can only be used if it's plugged in). What else? And if you DON'T want to buy new (remember, cost is a factor), which discontinued iPads should be be considered in the used market?
This time is completely different. I have some visual limitations. The new OLED screen is not only glorious, but extremely easy on the eyes. The nano-texture is even beyond this. It is not cheap, but this time it’s completely worth the upgrade. I did, so now I can keep this unit as many years as I decide. If you can afford it, go for it, or at least try the 14 days Apple gives you: nothing to lose.
Good, sound advice. Greatly appreciated. Thank you! Ps…… I have an iPad mini which I will occasionally use (ie if a smaller iPad is more convenient etc), otherwise my principle iPad is a 2018 iPad Pro, which suits my personal purposes. I’m so glad Apple changed the pencils, especially the method of recharging!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I've come close to breaking the Apple Pencil off in my iPad when I had the pencil that charged by sticking it into the lightening port. Magnetic pencil charging is the best. By far.
Thank you. I have an iPad from 2017, I think. It’s iPad 5th generation. It’s not a mini. The only reason I first start think about a new iPad is that I don’t think mine can use those pens but I don’t know how much I would use it. Mine works fine mine isn’t for a phone because I have Samsung. Mine works for what I use it for. When doesn’t I will look for another, probably a 10 9. This video helped.
I set my iPad on the roof of my car to settle my daughter into her car seat and forgot it was up there. A day later during a rain storm my husband found it in a ditch about 8 miles away. It worked perfectly except for some cracked glass one of the corners. I put some duct tape over the damaged glass and 3 years later I'm still using it and just can't seem to replace it ❤
I like the filters you use Rich. Let me throw another one in - resale value. My wife was using my 13 inch 2016 iPad Pro after I upgraded to the M1 iPad Pro. Battery life was becoming sketchy - but it is 8 years old. So I got the 13 inch M4 iPad Pro, switched my 2021 iPad Pro to my wife (she uses it mostly for movies and web browsing) and we got $160 dollars back from Apple on the trade in for the 2016 model. Resale value of Apple products is quite good either with Apple or with on-line sites. So sometimes you can upgrade at a significant discount, get a new battery, greatest screen and processor for a reasonable price if you upgrade from a recent model. Or you could flip to your kids or friends. Just a thought.
I’m trading in my 12.9” pro and getting $410 from Apple i originally got the pro due to the larger screen size and the 2nd gen pencil so I’m getting the 13” air
Just ordered my 1st Apple product replacing my 3 yr old 14"Dell w/WIN10 as it completely died one morning. My computer needs are small compared to most, but I wanted to buy something that was user-friendly that would last a while. Everything I've read says that it's a great unit. The IPad Air M2 w/256 Gigs & 11" screen.. Always good to have more memory than less. Delivered this week w/all discounts & incentives $687.00.
I bought a refurbished 5th gen iPad in 2018. It's perfectly fine, perhaps a little slow but I'm not in that much of a hurry that a second or two makes much difference..
Thank you for making this simple and to the point. This common sense idea really will work for most users, and it has convince me that I do not need to upgrade my current iPad Air 4 at this time.
thanks for this! I love my mini 6. I had the original pro and hated it. it was too big and heavy. I'm thinking of getting something a little larger than the mini now because as I got older its a little harder to see for some things and I don't want to constantly pinch and zoom that part of the screen . it's a pain when reading articles
If you can, go to an Apple Store, Best Bu or some store in your area that sells Apple products and see which one works best for you. Right now, I don't think you can go wrong with the 10.9" base iPad for $349. Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent video, thank you. New subscriber. Liked how video was direct and to the point and you did a great job showing examples on the screen while explaining things.
My IPad 1 still works flawlessly but there is nothing it can run now. It is also slow which I never thought when I first got it. The iPad I use everyday is 5 years old and still works perfectly. I wish the phones were as good.
I have a Gen 2 12.9 pro starting to get slow. I have glued and taped the Magic Keyboard to keep it together. I want the new one to fit in my backpack like the old 12.9 for air travel. Looking forward to a backlit keyboard. Does the old pencil use the magnetic charge ? I only use it occasionally and it’s always dead .
I have used an Ipad since Ipad 1--and was still using custom built Window computers with big Wacom graphics tablets. W/O explaining further I eventually switched totally to Apple for continuity and the ecosystem. I prefer touch for one thing but also upgraded to 12.9 Pros for the size when they became available--as photographer Ipad OS 13 (I think) made a huge difference for me because I could access all my external drives. Life changes have meant I have now decided not to upgrade Mac Pros and use Ipad as only computer with keyboard and pencil. I prefer to use my Ipad in my lap as I often did my Mac so I use the magic keyboard which is only one that has worked for that--for me. I now have a 2021 M1 12.9 Pro (and a 2018 12.9 Pro without M chip--and battery issues😊) and will upgrade--but am thinking of Ipad Air 12.9--but hope I get one more year or so from my 2021. I am now pretty deep into the Apple ecosystem LOL with a number of Homepods (originals and Minis), watch, Mini 5, Iphone, airpod pros (and Sony earphones)--and tend to be pretty techy (and have used computers since the old Radio Shack 8080-85 without HD AIR) so upgrade for me will depend on usage (updating software may not be possible, etc). But---I find your suggestions for most seniors to be helpful for many who are less used to new tech.
This was so helpful as there have been some discounts lately, and my iPad 6th gen seems sluggish and almost full. I am not a power user so may hold off as I PREFER my biometric button and have the iPhone SE for that very reason. I still have my iBook laptop that was the size of a copier paper that introduced me to OS X and Safari as well as my G4 Cube which I bought around 2000 because the LCD screen I fell in love with wouldn’t work with the laptop! Cheers, Michael Albuquerque NM USA, PS I have the same mini fridge in my office!
I’ve been thinking about a newer iPad but I’m holding off, I like the headphone jack better for watching movies or on calls. Apple eliminated it and now I have to purchase very expensive Bluetooth headphones, which really sucks.
With iMac , I ran into issue with not getting operating system and security upgrades after ten years even though the computer worked fine. Haven’t confronted that yet with my iPad (approaching six years old).
I'm currently thinking about upgrading my iPad but that's because it's a 1st generation iPad Pro 12.9" and it's just been orphaned by Apple. But it's a nice iPad and I recently bought the perfect keyboard for it (a Logitech Slim Combo) of which I can't find an equivalent for the new iPad Air 13" model. All the new keyboards insist on the touchpad which interferes with my typing. I'm a classically trained touch typist who learned on manual typewriters in the 1960s. I expect the space bar to be at the bottom of the keyboard. Weirdly enough, I'm waiting for the perfect keyboard before I buy a new iPad. The Apple keyboard that has the proper space bar location doesn't have function keys. The keyboards with function keys have touch pads (and most are bluetooth rather than using the Smart Connector on the iPad itself. Meanwhile the current iPad will just have to keep going even though it needs more time on the charger than it used to. I'm also still using my ten year old computer (its predecessor lasted for 15 years and that was when motherboards were morphing every year). But I've already got a laptop with the right specs and I'm planning to just get a docking station.
I bought my second iPad a few years ago after my 1st iPad had lasted ages and the battery started to lose its charge capability, and I have to say the battery in my first iPad was far, far better then the one on my new iPad!
I have an iPad 2 that the iOS 10 I bought it for 5$ in a garage sale but it works, but very slowly, certain things don’t load up quickly, you tube and mandatory commercials mess with the operation of a RUclips video, almost have to watch the entire commercial, my iPad Air 2 stops updating at iOS 16, a bit better but now if I want to watch live sports using the Apple TV app it will not load or work, the rest of the app does work. I put a new battery in last year , I wonder if I should upgrade and buy a third iPad that does run the latest software. Are there any security issues with accessing my apps and not running the latest software. The iPad version would say security and bug issues. Like you said do I need to waste my money and use my newer iPad till it doesn’t work anymore or spend the cash and use the newest one knowing that it too will be obsolete.
A couple years ago I bought a new iPad because the one I had seemed to be slowly dying. Only, it never got any worse and is still usable. I then found out what a nice luxury it is to have two iPads. Usually I am playing media on one while we surfing on the other. I found out that Logic Remote supports multiple iPads running different screens, so when I am using Logic Pro on my MBP, I can have two other screens on my iPads both working wirelessly.
I have perfectly fine iPad Air 4Th Gen. and the only reason I want upgrade to new iPad Air M2 because it comes at 13 inch, now before I owned 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 and I had to sell it due to it bending in the middle, I know many reviewers are saying This is not an issue on all new 13 inch iPads but I’m still undecided. Also side located camera on older iPad for FaceTime calls is another let down for me. Can you please tell me if I should upgrade or not. Thanks in advance.
My old iPad 10.5 I believe is a 2017. My iPad does not have cellular only Wi-Fi which can be used only so many places. Some Wi-Fi areas are unsecured sites. My iPad is a A12 Bionic and I would like to update in power, I have four speakers, but I would like cellular service. What is your honest opinion?
Just bought the 12.9 inch M2 6 generation with 256 GB for $900.00 to replace my 10.5 inch 7: year old iPad. Also bought the logitech touch keyboard case for $129 on Amazon 42% reduction in price on sale. The only thing magic about the apples magic keyboard is its Price.💰 I’ve used logitech keyboard on my 7 year old iPad and never had any damage after being dropped numerous times over 7 years. Apple’s magic keyboard has absolutely no protection on the edges and is only held on by magnets and very flimsy when you touch the screen. It took them 7 years to add a row of function keys that logictech already had 7 years earlier. Apple as usual is playing catch-up. lastly logic tech only cost $129 versus apples $350. What’s really nice too is you can just separate it from the keyboard and still have protection for the edges and the back of the iPad plus it makes it much easier to hold. If you are really trying to assist older people on making purchases, you should at least do your research and not push all of the high-end Apple products that they will never need, such as the magic keyboard cost $350 versus Logitech keyboard cost $129, Apple Pencil cost $129 versus iPad third-party Pencil on Amazon cost $24 and works just fine etc. etc. etc.👈👀🤷♂️
I guess you didn't see my earlier videos on the Logitech keyboard and 3rd party pencils that are much cheaper and work great! This video was really about when is the right time to upgrade your iPad. Thanks so much for watching!
This was a great plain spoken and easy to understand video. Unfortunately when I chose my basic iPad I didn't know how much I would end up using it nor did I realize how many GB iOS would take up so I'm now in a place where I'm running out of GB. One ?, when you mentioned the big round button is now gone from the basic iPad does that mean fingerprint access is now gone as well from the basic iPad? Thank you and again great video
Great down-to-earth advice. What about battery? iPad batteries will degrade overtime. If everything else is fine, is it worth it to spend money replacing the battery vs buying a more recent model? Also, how about refurbished models that may be from the previous iteration of the model that may save you a few $?
Well I just bought a new Ipad 10 " 9th generation 256G.... I bought a new Ipad because my Ipad mini I had been using had a bulging battery that was pushing it apart and it was no longer being updated to the most recent IOS. I liked my Ipad mini but decided to go with this bigger one but I'm having trouble adjusting to this bigger size but I haven't had it that long. ahhh I always use my Ipad in portrait orientation.... I didn't realize anyone would use it any other way?
When I started buying computers in the 1980’s my friend and teacher gave this advice about updating equipment: “When the computer you have no longer does what you need it to do, then it’s time to buy a new computer.” This advice was said in this wise review. Thank you!
In my view, when the Mac OS works on iPad Pro 😂

Today it’s not just the computer, it’s the apps, accessories like apple pencil… for instance your old computer is probably tethered to a desk. No longer is that an acceptable constraint.
@@bobjensen4051it’s pretty close these days
One attribute that you missed was the amount of usable memory on your iPad. My current iPad still does everything that I need, but the operating system has grown over the years to take up over half of my available memory storage. I had to remove photo storage just so there was enough room available for OS updates.
I don’t want to lay a fee just to save my photos, but I’ve had to delete photo backup and still space is at a premium. I’d like to be able to delete duplicate photos but can’t🤷♀️ I can’t download latest upgrade as there’s not enough space it says🫣
So that fits the criteria for needing a newer more-memory device.
Have you called Apple & checked if you can remove some of the older iPad OS iterations, just a thought. Take care
@@minwade5436 I am sure security updates are integrated in the operating system updates. As such, even if it was possible to revert back to a previous version it would open my iPad up to potential security risks and leave me more vulnerable to being hacked.

Thanks so much! Glad the video was helpful.
And there is none of the manic "What's Up" which seems to be the fashion with the younger Y chromosomes.
Refreshing when he stays on topic, well organized, no click bait. Bravo!

Still using a 5th Gen 7year old base iPad. Still works great and does what I want. I mostly use it as a media consumption device. Videos, TV, movies, reading, music, podcasts, email and web surfing. If you are like me 7 year old tech is just fine.
My basic iPad was bought in 2015. Still working just great.😊
You missed one of the most compelling reasons (and my own reason for upgrading my 12.9 Pro): battery life degradation
Replace the battery.
That’s associated with cost.
Agreed! But any Apple store will replace a battery for you for a lot less than a new iPad!
You should’ve bought an M2 iPad Pro. Would’ve been a much better buy than an M2 Air
Truth. if your present ipad still works, there's no reason to part with your hard-earned bucks. Wisdom, right there!
When my old iPad started having trouble installing system updates due to lack of space on its 32gb of storage, I knew it was time to upgrade.
You must have been taught as I was; “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without”. I hear you, but these days, need is huge.
Your common sense makes sense.
I have a wife I’ve had for 34 years and I have no plans to upgrade. You’d have to ask her if she feels the same.
Nothing wrong with that. I’m like you, like to hold on things for as long as they're useful. Especially if get quality stuff.
I dig you.
Good ol’ Rich Bolin! Simple explanations require great thought and intelligence. Well done.
Thank you kindly!
Thank you! I’ve been contemplating this very thing. I have a perfectly good IPad Pro 11 inch. And I don’t want anything bigger or smaller. 👌
One aspect you do not cover is there is a significant adjustment for seniors going to a device without a home button. .. i still can get confused figuring out what i am supposed to do
I love the home button!
Well Done Rich!!!,
Lots of information at a nice precision explanation of the 2024 iPad line up.
I am going to stick with your criteria in making my choice when the mood strikes me❣️
Glad the video was helpful. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for this video Rich. I appreciate how you are skilled at condensing the technical into everyday speak.
I upgraded to pro when I fell in love with facial recognition on my phone. The old one is a backup when my pro is recharging. Someone suggested using the old one as an electric photo frame on your livingroom sidetable. I’ve also had great luck reselling on Craigslist.
My plan is to get a 2024 iPad Pro 13” because of the larger size and I want Face ID The OLED screen will be a nice bonus.
I love that little red refrigerator behind you
I’m watching your video with my old iPad !!! It’s fine!!
Very informative, thank you
OMG, I love the iPad Pro 2018 and am using it now. I love this thing. Thanks for a nice straightforward video. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Would you recommend the new iPad? I have the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. I use the iPad for my daily driving.
If you have to watch a video to know if you need a new iPad, you probably don’t need a new iPad.
What a tosser
Super true.
Such a philosopher there skippy doogle ! 😆
@@johanneskreisler7647 How did you get here?😂
You do if you own an android tablet and are considering an iPad particularly for photo editing
Rick BowFLEX!!!!!!! Great Job, clear and concise mate!
Ha! I'm changing my name! I love it!
@@RichBowlin Ha! With my compliments Sir BowFLEX! 😆
Great video, simple and to the point. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Rich, very informative 👍
I bought a iPad Pro 12.9 6th gen last year, I’m good with what I have.
Thank you!
Ps……
I have an iPad mini which I will occasionally use (ie if a smaller iPad is more convenient etc), otherwise my principle iPad is a 2018 iPad Pro, which suits my personal purposes. I’m so glad Apple changed the pencils, especially the method of recharging!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I've come close to breaking the Apple Pencil off in my iPad when I had the pencil that charged by sticking it into the lightening port. Magnetic pencil charging is the best. By far.
Excellent discussion. Benchmark for me is: Will it accept updates. If not, kick to the curb.
And I’m on my old 9.7” iPad Air. But, this thing works just fine.
Good information Rich. Thanks for your input and insight.
Practical review - extraordinary delivery! 💪👍
I agree! Who uses portrait mode on an iPad? Cases are made for landscape! Being left handed I’m glad the front camera is being moved
I set my iPad on the roof of my car to settle my daughter into her car seat and forgot it was up there. A day later during a rain storm my husband found it in a ditch about 8 miles away. It worked perfectly except for some cracked glass one of the corners. I put some duct tape over the damaged glass and 3 years later I'm still using it and just can't seem to replace it ❤
depends what you use it for thanks for your video keep them coming
Logical conclusion as always. Thank you Rich. You saved me a bundle. I’ll stay with my base iPad 9th generation and wait until it dies.
I’m trading in my 12.9” pro and getting $410 from
Apple i originally got the pro due to the larger screen size and the 2nd gen pencil so I’m getting the 13” air
Yes I find that it works for me, if I have trade value it can off set the price of a new one.
When the old one can’t receive any updates.
Apple has planned obsolescence..
That’s number 1 for me.
Good advice I keep my current IPAD thanks also saved money👍😎
How I love your videos, Rich! Not sure what or when I’ll upgrade to but I’ll watch all your videos first! Thank you.
I love my iPad Mini 6 as well, I upgraded from the 4. It’s a perfect size to take everywhere with me, and to read books/ watch RUclips in bed.
Thanks so much for the information. Very helpful.
Thanks for this timely and helpful video.
Crisp video, just what we want!!
Thanks!
I bought a new IPad Pro in May to replace iPad Pro I bought in 2019. Except for the memory I see very little difference which really surprised me
I have used an Ipad since Ipad 1--and was still using custom built Window computers with big Wacom graphics tablets.
Cheers, Michael Albuquerque NM USA,
PS I have the same mini fridge in my office!
Yeah, that's a great setup!
Is the iPad a good alternative to a laptop ie MacBook?
We were thinking of replacing our 15 year old one.
I’ll be keeping my iPad 9. It sounds outdated, but for what I want it’s fine.
I’ve got a 2018 Pro, I love it, but the battery life is lacking and it would be the only reason to update at this point in time.
Just bought the 12.9 inch M2 6 generation with 256 GB for $900.00 to replace my 10.5 inch 7: year old iPad. Also bought the logitech touch keyboard case for $129 on Amazon 42% reduction in price on sale. The only thing magic about the apples magic keyboard is its Price.💰
I’ve used logitech keyboard on my 7 year old iPad and never had any damage after being dropped numerous times over 7 years.
I am upgrading from a mini 4 to the mini 7 next week 😁
Great vid first time with really enjoyed simple to understand thanks will watch you again have now subscibed
Thanks and welcome
Still like the smaller ones, 9.7 and 10.2.
This was so informative. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
When you won’t get updates anymore. 👎🏻☹️
❓❓❓May I ask what brand of table top stand are you using in this video?
