I did that in a ska band for like ten years, it’s so convenient! I switched back to keyboard a couple of years ago though because I was getting sick of the tone and wanted some nice organ sounds.
I think I am ready to do this. Started self learning instruments at 44, now 59. I play trumpet, harmonica, tin flute, recorder, kalimba, celtic lyre harp, bodhran, ocarina, steel tongue drum.
Im a professional pianist hoping to get into the melodica but I didnt know what I should buy. This video was very helpful and im planning on buying the Eastrock blue 37 of 32 key after watching this video. Thank you for all the information! Edit: Bought the 37 key melodica and I love it! Thanks for the help
The melodica is the most underrated instrument of all. I play the guitar and the bass clarinet, and I have no intention of switching, but would love to own a good melodica. I also know basic piano and circular breathing, and those are bothvery helpful on the melodica.
A few years ago I got melodica for my 18th birthday from my friends even though I've never played any instrument. I've known from the beginning that it's one of the best gifts I've ever got, but I didn't have time or was too lazy to learn. Now I found it in my wardrobe and I watched a few of your tutorials already, you make it look so easy! And the pandemic seems to be a perfect time since I have a lot of free time at home. Also it's perfect for annoying my neighbors who are extremely loud. I feel motivated
This is a perfect channel to find just now! I'm composing a jazzy tune to which I,ve planned to use either harmonica or melodica intro and solo. And it looks like it's easier to find melodica players than a newborn Toots Thielemans (may him rest in Gods peace) from here in Finland :)

I play the bluesharp and first bought a cheaper one but I had music-lessons when I was younger so I’m not tone-deaf. Went for a easy-bender (Golden melody) from Hohner. Now I bought myself a (pHohner Superforce Melodica 37 (€66) I want good sound, easy to play, fun to play instruments so it is fun to learn them. And it ìs fun…I’m in love with my melodica. 😉
Tuning a melodically is not too hard once you know how. It’s the same principal as tuning an accordion. And once learned saves a lot of money. I learned how to tune accordions in the early 1990s and the principal is the same for melodic as concertinas melodions and mouth organs. Which all fall into the category of free read instruments.
After seeing your videos I got inspired to buy one (a 32 cheap one, the only thing they had but enough as a hobbyist) it came with a note broken and have sores in my mouth but it is so fun 😭 can't wait to replace it to keep on practicing
Im a pianst and have an interest in these. I bought a 32 key cahaya but decided to get the 37 key Eastrock. If i get realky good I may get the yamaha on down the road but didnt wantvtobspend a lot right now. Im teaching my grandchildren piano so hoping one will like having the 32 key I purchased. I was also in band in high school years back and played the flute which I still play. Im just a music lover and always have been but this is my first time owning a melodica.
So what I gather from this is that a melodica is the same price point as a Steinway? Or was your Steinway just in that bad of shape? The assertion that you 'sold your Steinway to buy a melodica' seems fantastical. Please tell me you paid a couple of electric bills with some of the money.
I started loking up melodicas to get more ingo of them, as I have a dungeon and dragons bard that plays one and i really wanted to be informed about them. Well, I used to play the violin but had to give it up because it was too expansive. Yet, I really want to keep on doing music. And not gonna lie, all of that really makes me want to pick up the melodica next
Thanks for that. I just ordered a Suzuki mx 37d and I was concerned that perhaps it would be too cheap and entry level but from watching this, it sounds like it should be fine
Wonderful vibe about how you conduct and present these sessions about the Melodica. I'm looking at the Hammond PRO- 44 H V2 as I play piano professionally and also use to play the French Horn and the Moeck Professional Recorder as-well ... As my mother back in France also played the piano and also the piano accordion, I have always been fascinated by the sound of such instruments :) Love your channel and I am now viewing it from time to time ... Thank you for bringing joy in a different dimension of musical experience. Would you be so kind as to demonstrate this Hammond PRO- 44 H V2 please? :)
Thanks for the lovely feedback 😀 I used to have a couple of Moecks back in the pre melodica days! I don’t actually have a Hammond 44 at the moment, but I used to have 2, and can confirm they’re great instruments

Nice to see a video all about the melodica. I think it's a great little wind instrument and quite cool. Check out Augustus Pablo meets The Rockers uptown. That tune really showcases how the melodica can be used to good effect in Reggae music

I just heard about the Melodica today. And I'm very interested. I already found the Yamaha, 37-Key Melodica on Amazon and a bunch of inexpensive ones. So the question I had is why is Yamaha price $50 dollar more and is it worth it? This video answered that question: Yes, yes it is. Thank You! So the Yamaha Pianica is in my shopping cart, waiting for my next payday. I'm looking forward to watching your tutorials.
Remember that on youtube and recordings, its difficult to compare, because of the quality. In my experience 32 key melodicas aren't any warmer. Melodicas are generally very bright sounding instruments, apart from a few vintage Hohners
1:13 Sold the Steinway to buy a melodica. My first thought was, hey, a melodica seems cool , it can't be that expensive right ? Well I have no Steinway to trade it for :(
Hello! I just got a Melodica a few days ago and I’m already in love with it and I’m starting to learn my first couple of songs. I’m curious, could you make a video of how to find the key or pitch of a song and then apply it to the melodica? There are already a lot of really great song tutorials for Melodica on youtube but I would really love to learn how to play any type of song on the Melodica and create my own covers. Any video of how to apply the key of a song on the Melodica would be very helpful for beginners! :) thank you
@@tierneyjohnson501 Good idea Tierney! I'll try and make one at some point. In the meantime, try this: sing along to the song you want to learn. Then take just one line from the song, and make sure you can sing it at the right pitch. From there you transfer it to the melodica. So start with the first singing note, hold the note, and see if you can match it up to the right pitch on the melodica. Then you do this for each note. Do you see what I mean?
great video. you're an excellent speaker and teacher and viideo producer. :) Do you have a gallery of some of your wooden handmade melodicas or videos of you demo-ing them? love tpo see and hear them.

Hi GREAT basic video. Thx. I am a new melodica player. I am about to buy a used Yamaha P37D. I saw how to open and clean inside. I am wondering how to best sanitize this used instrument? Can I use isopropyl alcohol inside and on the reeds to sanitize? Or will that damage something? I’m thinking it should be ok if I am careful with the rubber seal. Advice? Thanks for your thoughts.
Whatever you do, don’t get a yahama p37d. Mine’s so far out of tune that I can’t even play simple triad chords. because i bought it on amazon (but directly fron the yamaha amazon store), they won’t take it back. $140 in the garbage, unless you have any ideas on where I can send it to be retuned? Is that even possible? I measured each note with a pederson tuner and each note is off by 25 to 50 cents of pitch. If you have any suggestions I’m all ears! Otherwise, I LOVE your video style! Thanks for making great, informative content!
I like melodicas cuz they sound like concertinas without the price tag. I pick up instruments with a passing fancy so its nice to have cheap options I can dabble with lol
Thank you very much for your tutorial, and I have thought about purchasing one of these stunning melodic colours, and I’d probably go for a more advanced one. I say this, as I already played keyboard piano at a very advanced level (self-taught).
Melodicas are about as loud as a. Joking or flute but not as loud as brass instruments. You can practise quietly, by blowing softer. I do a lot of my practise without blowing at all!
mate, i just wanna annoy my friends
Should be easy enough :-)
With a melodica badly played, you may end up with no friends left!
Something tells me that with your personality you do not need a melodica to achieve that.
I buy melodica today and a cheap one so i can play it during my quarantine

Because you bough it from via internet
Because you bought it. You are being tracked and monitored by artificial intelligence, constantly.

Sorry to hear that Donavan, surely its technically faulty if its out of tune?
that was exactly the melodica i was looking at online before watching this video
I like melodicas cuz they sound like concertinas without the price tag. I pick up instruments with a passing fancy so its nice to have cheap options I can dabble with lol
I agree, very similar sound to a concertina...
Circle breathing is amazing but impossible for me.
It just takes 10 mins practice every day, but for a very long time!
@@MelodicaWorld Basically, any 5 year old can do it...... with 20 years practice. Almost forgot....your playing and delivery is very good. Thank you.
Hello sir, what melodica would you recommend that sounds like a Tenor Sax?
Unfortunately I don’t know of any melodicas that sound like a tenor sax!
Dang, I want one of those too!🎷 Let me know when you find one!😁
This is a good overview. Do you know if there is a way to play these with a pump so the player can sing and play at same time.
Someone has done this on RUclips, but surely it’s better to buy an accordion for this?
@@MelodicaWorld its just fun and portable so worth it. There are s few hacks with a pump and balloon woohoo
the level 2 37 key isn’t working
Can you recommend another 37 key in the level 2?
Why giving up the Steinway grand and classical piano for the melodica? It's so extremely high above the melodica. Why not both?
I still play piano sometimes, just don’t find it as interesting, and can’t take it out to jam with :-)
Thanks for the guide sir
Glad it was helpful :-)
Could you do a comparison video between the level 2 Suzuki and the Yamaha? In deciding between those
I would like to do this, but not sure when. They're similar, I'm sure you'd be pleased with either!
Thank you very much for your tutorial, and I have thought about purchasing one of these stunning melodic colours, and I’d probably go for a more advanced one. I say this, as I already played keyboard piano at a very advanced level (self-taught).
Hohner airboard carbon 37 vs yamaha p32d which melodica is best ?
Thanks for your videos 💛
What do you think about Hohner Melodicas?
A. Hohner AirBoard 37
B. Hohner Superforce 37.
I don't really know the Hohners
I wish there was more options in the level 3 range.
Me too
Sir, how loud is a melodica usually(especially a cheaper one) ? I am living with elderly parents and they won't appreciate a loud sound.
Melodicas are about as loud as a. Joking or flute but not as loud as brass instruments. You can practise quietly, by blowing softer. I do a lot of my practise without blowing at all!
I bought the vintage melódica and need to learn how to clean it.
Yes, cleaning’s definitely a good idea!
is models with full size keys?
No, I don’t think there are
What do you think of the hohner melodica piano 26, made in Germany?
I think it’s great!
