A really nice video! The Claviola is astonishing… It sounds halfway between a barrel organ and an electronic instrument ..and that circus/ fun fair weird and haunted vibe is really nice :) it feels like a scene of the movie "wings of desire" or a sarah moon exhibition. The Jubilee too, but the keys seem the noisiest of all of them !
@@Davmm96 Quite true indeed! 😊 But for some reason the claviola sounds slightly funnier, doesn't it? or... maybe it's because of the Sea shanty ..? and other jigs that make their effect of cheering the mood of workers and inviting to drink "the Glass of Beer" 😁🍻
@@mr_bassman6685 Absolutely! 😊 The Claviola truly has such a mellow, richly layered tone, with a kind of natural, emotional vibrato that conveys both deep emotion and uplifting cheerfulness. It pairs beautifully with the melodica, creating a fantastic duo-just like in the video Introducing the Unola (double melodica). The Claviola has this unique, otherworldly quality-almost like a UFO in both appearance and sound-making it a one-of-a-kind, magical instrument ! Hi, I don't know if you are still answering these comments but first I have to tell you this is just a fantastic video for so many reasons. Thank you. I have listened 3 times completely and skipped around many more times. So I see an alto on Ebay, looks great. If I can get it for $75.00 or less would be that a good deal? And as far as new Hohner's go are there any under $200.00 that sound any better than the alto or are as well made ? Thanks so much. I have to listen some more. John
I really like the orange Hohner Student. I like the smaller ones, and that one has a real nice sound to it. The Claviola is a pretty cool one as well though. The Rasta 37 looks sick!
Do you have a guide for mixing down the sound of the Melodica during the recording? You sound so professional compared to the average Melodica players.
@@jrscisneros Yes, the most important thing is recording in a good environment. This recording was made with many absorbant sound panels nearby, which left me with a clean sound. I also use a high guality mic, the AKG C414. There's no EQ, just a little reverb from Logic Pro. I tried lots of reverbs until one really suited the melodica and the melody. maybe the thing that most people forget is the instrument has to be in tune!
Great video! Many years ago I saw one on the TV and really wanted one so I went around the village playing Christmas carols (it was that time of year) on my recorder to collect the money. Bought the soprano and for me it was the bridging intsrument to piano. 57 years later it is sat on the top of my bookcase still played occasionially.
@@MelodicaWorld oh I see, it's just that I'm a pianist looking to get a high quality first melodica. I don't know which to go for. I'd like to spend about $100 any suggestions on a specific model?
nicely done! I wonder how big your melodica collection is lol. Please let me know if you made any duplicates of your wooden melodica. Would like to purchase one from you.
Thanks, my collection isn't actually that big. Hohner lent me a load of the new melodicas to make the video! I'll definitely let you know if I make any more wooden melodicas :-)
Love the video, don't think I've seen a video with so many likes and no dislikes. Just bought a Horner Student Melodica 32 and going to learn Wellerman using this, thanks!
I notice you play the Soprano with one hand. Most people play it with two. Can you explain your reasoning and is there a right or wrong way or just preference and feel. I’ve got one and want to pick the best way for me before the patterns get too worn in to switch.
I have an old Alto. its lower 2 or 3 buttons are a bit sticky and you have to hit them a tad harder to get a note. I also have a Fire that I bought brand new the year it came out. it’s the only one I’ve played in public, using it in a tune or two with my old band, Snake Suspenderz.
@@MelodicaWorldThanks for the video. Claviola sounds like Hulusi, Bawu or Sheng - Chinese music instruments. I like that sound so much! May be you should try learning play on Sheng 😉

Really great and comprehensive video! I got an old Piano 27 from c. 1964 from my grandparents, and I like its sound quite well. Only thing that is a pity for those older ones using the "wide" mouthpieces is that there's no way to attach a pipe to it. I'd love to play it both-handed just to know how full chords would sound on it, but without an air hose it's not really possible. Or is there any adapter piece or the like? I didn't find anything online that seemed to fit...
Old hohners sound fantastic!
The way you play these things is just killer. The little embellishments of the melody make it truly come to life. I could listen to this all day.
