Holy shit, you found the best way to showcase the usage/application of these filter stops in real life settings better than any other video on RUclips under just few minutes. Good work.
You're welcome. Yeah, no one actually had any examples out in RUclips so I just decided to make it. I was pretty sure other ppl wanted to know this info :) Thank you again for watching.
@@MichaelYoungKim I love you 🙏🏻❤️
@@ElMasie haha you’re welcome! 🙃
really opened my eyes
I agree
If you’re outside shooting on a bright sunny day, 6-9 all dayyyyyy. At 2-5, it will still be overblown and hard to fix that in post
It is 1.4. When you set for example 5.6, 2-5 will be ok I suppose.
Best PolarPro VND related video out there. I have absolutely no idea why all the other marketing RUclipsrs including PolarPro themselves do not feature comparison shots like you did here. Straight to the point without all the worthless bla bla. Well done mate! Subscribed and just bought myself the 2-5 VND.
Thank you for your kind words. I couldnt find anything on YT so I just made the video myself. Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the sub 🙏🏼
@@MichaelYoungKim Had my very first video shoot outdoors a couple of weeks ago. I went with the 2-5 stop version and unfortunately even at the highest setting with a fixed shuter speed of 1/60 I had to step down my camera all the way to f11 in order for the sky not to burn out. 😅For the next one I'm considering breaking the 180 degree rule slightly and shoot at maybe 1/100 to compensate for that. Should also have the positive side effect, that when stabilizing video footage in post I won't get that much "smeary motion blur" issues. Otherwise I might have to swallow the pill of buying the 6-9 stop filter as well. Again: Excellent comparison!
Great vid, thanks.
I like the reasoning with 2-5 first, but I think if you plan on using the vND with just an a7siii, 6-9 makes more sense. If 6 is to darks, you can crank up the ISO to it's second base ISO (in s-log3), which is 12800 I believe. In the case of the a7siii, given it's strong light performance, I'd rather crank up ISO than aperature. Will try to get the 2-5 later if needed.
Did this idea work for you? Also, what aperture do you use?
This sounds so logical. How's it working for you in practise?
True
6-9 for daylight shooting even with a 2..8 and if it gets too dark, which rarely happens, then crank the ISO. Works with the a7s iii
god finally found the video i want , after searching a bunch of trash , thanks mate for this great video , simple clear cut explanation 👌🏻
Glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching~
This is exactly what I was looking for. Literally even with those exact settings, thank you very much. You have earned a sub!
Thank you for watching and your sub! 🙏
@@MichaelYoungKim Yeah bro. Like no one bothered to do this not even the companies who sell them. Now I know need more than 9 stops since I'm doing f1.4 @ 1/50 Slog-3 which only allows me to get down to IOS 160.
Why did i have to search for 30 minutes to finnaly find this simple to explain video, thank you brother
Thank you for watching :)
Love this kind of content. Straight to the point
Thank you for watching.
I think it really depend from which PP do you use. For instance with Sony A7SIII and SLOG3 (where it’s better start from 640 ISO) may 6-9 stop can help more on daylight.
My thoughts exactly. I think with SLOG3 and 640 ISO, the 2-5 ND is pretty useless. Indoors, you probably don't need ND filter anyways.
Why do you need pretty high iso for daylight?
@@alexfox575 for the slog pp recommend to start using iso from 640 to get the better dynamic range
after all the search, this is the most straight forward review I’ve ever seen. Thank you I will subscribe because of this.
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
Man , i was searching whole internet for this video , BIG THANKS ❤
Don't know why it took me a while to find this video, but this is great. Thank you
You are welcome!
It’s important to consider your camera’s base iso
Very true. Also important if you are shooting in log or not. 🙂
The best video I have seen on the subject. Super helpful. 2-5 is probably more versatile but shooting with faster apertures in sunshine is impossible without the 6-9 VND
Thank you. Forgot to mention that if you are shooting log you def need 6-9vnd
@@MichaelYoungKim And thanks for this comment also , I'm very much a noob. log raises the base ISO right? Glad I ordered the 6-9 since Im shooting log on a7siii
Thinking to get a K&F VND 1-9 stops for the versatility and not too expensive ~$120
속이 뻥 뚫린다 감사합니다 결정하기 너무좋은 데이터에요
시청해 주셔서 감사합니다 🙏🏼
....I found myself in this exact same situation two months ago, buying my first VND before vacation; even in Florida in the wide majority of cases the 2-5 Stop did the trick. The Peter McKinnon filters are fantastic by the way! Thanks for the video!
You are welcome!
Honestly one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips. What a great way to make the comparison 🎉
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
thank you for the very short and concise explanation and example. The other videos i found on this made obnoxious 15+ minute to explain what you did in 3 mins
Glad it was helpful and thank you for watching!
Hey man, this was exactly the kind of help I was looking for. Gonna purchase the 2-5 now. Thanks so much!
Glad I can help! I always try to make videos that not really available on youtube (which is very rare) and this was one of them. Have a great day!
In a pinch you can try stacking a ND4 or a ND8 with the variable. It would give you a few more stops. Yet allow fine tune of nd.
Oh!! Didnt think about that!
Thank you Michael, it actually helped. I have circular and adjustable ND now but never pay attention to anything but the curve. Now I am about to invest in 4x5.65 for my matte box and these filters are insanely expensive i.e. I have to choose wisely based on need-to-have and acquire the to nice-to-have later.
That was amazing!!!!! I didn’t realize you would need higher stops for 24 fps that was soooo good 🙌
this has helped me out big time but do bear in mind your lens can also make a difference too depending on how bright it is etc, cheers
Beginner to ND filters wondering which fnds to get and this video is great
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, you just answered my question: 6-9 stops for outside/daylight vids with Fuji 50mm f1.0 with short DOF, ie Bô Bokeh ;)
Nice! Very helpful bro. Couldve also done with a 2.8 lens!
Waw that was an amazing demonstration of the ND intensity requirement to shoot wide open outside. Thank you
Thank you for watching 🙏🏼
Perfectly straight to the point…. The perfect video
Thank you sir!
Thank you this help me alot. Im going for fixed ND filter for F1.2 in a very sunny day .I think Ill get 10stops
Great video! Seems like the most useful would be a 4-8 or something 😂 Funny that...
I know i need something in the middle lol
They just released a 3-6 black edition ✌️
Lollllll exactly what I thought 🤣🤣🤣
2:10 is very helpful.
Thank you~
Awesome video and straight to the point while making it easy to understand all videos should be like this
Thank you for watching and generous feedback!
your the first to make a video on this, been looking for awhile, Thank you!
Yeah, I was looking for this for awhile too and I just decided to make it myself to help others. Glad it helped.
Great video, very simple and precise. However, I was hoping you would of been shooting in log at ISO800. But since that ISO800 is 4 stops more, I see that I need the 6 to 9 stops for daylight.
For log def 6-9. I should make a separate video for log with vnds.
Thanks for that great video! As the other comments point out, it´s the perfect showcase video.
Thank you very much!!!
Exactly what i was looking for! And straight to the point. Thank you!
You are welcome!
Excellent demo. Straight to the point 👏 Thanks
🙏🏼
Perfect, just what I needed. Im also in Southern California and shooting outdoors in the sun a lot, looks like its the 6-9 for me!
Actually, I ordered the 2-5 because my main lens will be my new Sigma 24-70 2.8 Thanks
I forgot to mention in the video but It also depends on what gamma you are going to shoot your video. If you are going to be shooting log then you def need 6-9
@@MichaelYoungKim Thanks. Yea, thats like 800 ISO I think but I dont shoot log.
How has this been working out for you. In SoCal too, and trying to decide if 6-9 will be too dark when shooting sunny at 2.8 and above. I can see it working well with my primes but not sure about my 20-70 gmaster..
@@michaelbell75how is the 2-5 in sunny daylight with the 2.8?
Just the video I need!Simple and clear, good work man!
Thank you for watching!
Wow. Perfect!!! Finally aome quality and value driven content and a short video too!!!
Hahah glad you liked it~ Thank you!
Thank you! This was my dilemma, but when you get The 2 to 5 and 6 to 9 together you save a little money. I think I’ll just go with the Freewell 2 to 5 for now though.
Good choice!
Exactly what I needed without all the fluff. Perfect.
Thx!!
I will be shooting with 24/70 sigma lense with base 24fps 4k on Sony a7iii and will be doing car cinema 2-5 best one won’t be doing any color grading straight from camera no slog
2-5 should be good
Wow, by far theeee best comparison. This is exactly what we need to see. Perfection. Thanks so much!!
You are welcome! 🙂
Very, very useful. The comparison photos spoke to me so clearly. I was debating whether to buy a 6-stop filter or lower mainly for outdoor videos on vacation. I am deciding to go with a fixed 6-stop ND filter for my trip. Thanks.
While you are outside, which do you end up using most? I also share locations with very sunny weather, thanks.
For 2.8 lenses i use 2-5 using slog3
@@MichaelYoungKim Thank you for the fast response! I placed my order!
Amazing video! Straight to the point with great examples.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Thank you man this was super helpful 👍 This is the type of video I was looking for
thank you for this. saved me a lot of time and money.
Thanks helped put things in simple perspective
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks dude, perfect for what I was looking for!
No problem!
Just got myself a gimbal and starting to learn videography for some marketing material for my own merch. Finally found the tutorial I was looking for! Concise and direct to the point. Thank you so much!
Thank you for watching 🙏🏼
Thank you very much, this was extremely helpful.
Hey Michael. Thank you so much for this! This is exactly what I was looking for.
I would have loved to also see what happens when you alter the aperture, because I'm usually not shooting wide open anyway.
Keeping that in mind: do you think the 2-5 will suffice? I will mostly be shooting outdoors. From this video, shooting wide open I would clearly go for the 6-9, but if I don't shoot wide open and only 1-2 stops down, the result would be different and I wonder if you have any recommendations on which one to buy in that case?
Have you found an answer to your question, I’m also curious?
The result should be the same, no matter if you change your stops on the ND or the lens (regarding exposure)
Great comparison. Exactly what I needed to see! I need both filters! Lol.
Thats the easiest way lol
thanks, quick and got to the point.
helped with buying my first Filter
You are welcome!!!
Thank you
You're welcome~
thank you so much, non pretentious, to the point, and super helpful. Cheers!
Glad it helped!! Thank you for watching!
Think 6-9 is better for someone like me who has the Sony A7IV and the Dual ISO on S-LOG3 works at 400 and 3200
Yes, if you are shooting log then 6-9 is a must.
Hi, please make this kind of test again but with aperture F4
f4 is 3 stops from f1.4. So it would look like stop 8 on the VND
Very helpful video, thanks man
Short and very informative! Great job 🙏
Thank you!
As a person who lives in bright ole Florida I think 6-9 works for me
Nice~
Great video. Straightforward, helpful, and informative. Thanks brother. Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
Exactly what I needed. Thank you
You are welcome!
Been looking for a test like this for a while. Thanks
My bro, this is what I'm looking for, great job and thanks!
Glad you like it!!
Super-helpful, thanks a lot, Michael!
You are welcome!!!
Simple and effective. Great video bruv
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻
Thanks Michael! Would you say for higher base ISO cameras like FX3 and A7Siii while shooting bright scenes outdoors, the 6-9 stop will get more use?
Even with fx3 and a7siii the first base iso is the same which is iso 800. So it will depends.
ok, thanks. I will do a test with my (non-variable) NDs the next time we get sunny skies here, which will give me a better idea @@MichaelYoungKim
Maaaasive help! I needed to see this so much!
Glad it helped!
You hit a grand slam MYK!🫵🏽💪🏽 🙏🏽
Thank you very much for watching~
Thanks for this Michael.
You are welcome!!
Best explanation 💯🔥
Thank you!
Straight to the point. Great video!
Thank you~
This is exactly what I wanted to know. I might be wrong, but I think that, with more stops of VND, I get the darker images. In your sample images at 2:09, the images of 4 stops and 5 stops don't follow this rule. What do you think is the reason? Thank you so much for sharing. Happy holidays!! 😊
I think I messed up placing the correct video at the correct spot.
@@MichaelYoungKim Thank you so much for answering my question. I am a beginner RUclips creator. All I know about making videos is what I learned from RUclips videos. Your video was very helpful for me to understand the relation between the number of stops of ND filters and images. Thank you for helping me figure out the general rules for using ND filters. Happy New Year to you and your family. 💕😉

Wow!. Greet video. This was really helpful
🙏🏼
This is an interesting topic for discussion. I own both the A7S3 and FX3 cameras, both of which have powerful dual native ISO capabilities. I have no experience in choosing the right ND filter strength, but I saw the blogger's recommendation to choose a 2-5 stop filter if I have one. However, some of the viewers in the comments suggested 6-9 stops might also be suitable. So, which stop should I choose for my indoor and outdoor shooting needs?
If you going to be shooting slog3 (which you should with those cameras) i would go with 6-9
what a phenomenal video
Hey brotha good video
But for video shooters could you do slog3 comparison? It has much better dynamic range and base iso of 640-800 and the highlights would clip at a much different level than no picture profile
It’s hard to do a comparison test with slog3 because all the cameras has different base ISO for slog3. But! If you are going to be shooting slog3 then it will most likely be 6-9 stops.
Great video thank you! Also fallout fan? Definitely subscribed
Fallout is so fun!!!!!! Thank you for the sub 🙏🏼
that was a very helpful video, thank you

Thank you for making this video
Thank you for watching 🙏🏼
Good vid, man, thanks.
Great video buddy! Just the video we needed to see. However, we never shoot inside much so for travel vlogging would you say the 6-9 is a great choice?
To be honest, it will all depends on how you want your shot to look like. If you are vlogging, I dont know if shallow depth of field is going to be important to you. If not, then I will stick with 2-5.
@@MichaelYoungKim Thank you for that!!
Thank you for this it has helped so much!
Glad it helped!
Why would you EVER use ND filter in controlled envoirment?! That's ridiculous. If I'd choose one I'd buy the 6 to 9, because in real-life scenarious, if you need to shoot S-Log or something that has base ISO of 640, 2 to 5 will do nothing.
Very true!
Nice video, thanks for sharing!!!
You are welcome!
This may sound a like a sacrilege, but I'll ask anyway. Which one would you recommend for Iphone 15 Pro? I'm thinking 6-9, but I'm not sure!
I would go 2-5 stops. Just because iphones have smaller sensors which takes in less light than the regular cameras. I would rather crank the shutter to get the right exposure than raise the iso to get the right exposure.
@@MichaelYoungKim thank you so much!!
So I’m still learning, but it seems like the higher the number the darker it gets. Do they basically emulate the aperture?
Basically easy way to remember is that the aperture number is the thickness of the aperture closing down. When you look straight into your lens at f1.8 you barely see the aperture because it’s wide open (more light coming in= brighter image), whereas f16 you will see more aperture blades closing down the lens (less light coming in=darker image). Hope I made some sense 🙂.
Thank you! 💯
