- Running ut of disk space on your SSD drive? It's pretty easy to move your Logic Pro X and/or GarageBand Library & your Apple Loops to a new disk location which frees up about 65Gb of disk space! Check it out!
Thanks for this! 6 years later and still helping :)
Great tutorial and still relevant with an M1 Mac mini running Big Sur. Thanks!
Great video, and still really useful in 2021 for moving Apple Loops! I found that one additional step was required after moving the loops to an external SSD and creating the symlink, and that was to re-index the loop library in Logic Pro. That's easily done by opening the loop browser, clicking 'Loops' and selecting 'Reindex All Loops' from the pop-up menu.
Can also be done in terminal in a couple of minutes "ln -s /path/to/original /path/to/link" if you want to skip the tooling part. Nice video, thanks !
Fine idea! works
I always come back to this! thank you so much!!
Worked like charm on Monterey 12.6. Only little difference is that the symbolic link appears in the current directory, not on the desktop, and also that you will be asked for your administrator password when renaming/deleting stuff from the /Library. Very good cautios almost fool proof instructions :) Thanks a lot. Happy 2023
Bro you are the king of tutorial videos , I have been watching YT vids for years and in the short time I have spent with your videos, I have benefitted from just about every one of your videos and I am actually having fun creating instead of being frustrated most of the time trying to figure out all the techy stuff involved recording ITB. Cheers
It works with Mojave 10.14.6 too - you just have to create the "Services" folder in "Application Support." Absolutely excellent description. Many thanks. (Oh, and the "Download" button has moved to the right hand side of the screen now on "Symbolic Link," but hey - it all works!)
Outstanding. Trying to get a few more years out of an older laptop without swapping the SSD. This was the key. Many thanks for taking the time to walk us through the process. Super informative and precise.
👍 cheers
I have looked at several explanations of how to do this and your’s is the simplest and most succinct. Thanks for this. I have only 30 gig left on my MacBook and will get more free space tomorrow because of this simple explanation. Thanks from across the pond...if you’re in England.....🇬🇧
Still working fine in 2022! You made my day, thanks a lot!
Great tutorial, thanks! As a note for anyone that has the same issue I did, if you don't have a "Services" folder in your library, you can make one!
It totally worked, thanks a lot man. There was no "Services" folder, but the Symbolic Link "how to instal" guide tell us to create the folder with the exact same name and it works perfectly. Great video
This is great! Thank you.
Read the comments on here if you can't find the Services.
I found I had to go out of that version (seeing the hidden version of the folder) back to normal Application Support to proceed.
I just made a folder named "Services" and then it worked ~
Don't get Symbolic linker from macupdater, it's not safe from malware. Get it from the app store!!
Fantastic. Works like a charm! Thanks for the thorough and clear instructions.
This has saved me so much space! Thanks for such a clear and accessible guide.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS WAS VERY DETAILED, INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL. YOU EXPLAINED IT THROUROUGLY AND NADE IT SIMPLE AND CLEAR. I INFINITELY THANK YOU.
It works with Mojave 10.14.4 just perfectly! Thanks!
Thank you! Worked with Big Sur 11.5.1 and a usb 3.1 pen drive.
Hi again! I've just bought a 2nd-hand Macbook Pro (2012) with a 2nd SSD installed in place of the DVD drive, to use PURELY with Garageband, so I can work on my tracks remotely, once I've created them. I've loaded Mac OS "Catalina" and everything works fine - just needed to create the "Services" folder in "Library."
Thank you for the tutorial! Very simple and straightforward. A part from now being able to run Garageband from my external drive and have all the files there as well, I am also now able to have my iPhone backups on my drive using SymbolicLinker. I was on the verge of giving up because coding in the Terminal was not going well for me. Much appreciated.
Awesome - been looking for a solution to move my MPC expansions as running out of space on my internal SSD. Just got to check it works on Mojave!
BRILLIANT!
Could not get this to work using your typical 'right click' alias, this has worked perfectly.
Thanks a lot for your time :-)
Great vid man, very helpful!
This was an absolute life saver, thank you!
This is the best explanation so far, concise and the most unto date. Thanks this is great and with what I have learned from the other videos I'm ready to have a go...🤪
Awesome tutorial! Very patient description of the whole process. Fantastic! Thanks much for your help. Subscribed.
Great video.
You have a good narration voice. Very clear and precise.
Thanks for the great explanations, simple and effective.
For people having trouble locating the "Services" folder...
In Finder, if you click on your main Hard Drive (eg. Macintosh HD), then open the "Go" menu and while that is open, HOLD DOWN the "Alt" key... you will see "Library" appear in the list...
Click that and you will be in a "protected" version of the Library folder... which will contain the Services folder.
I don't have an "Alt" key. Is that the "option" key?
Worked like a charm,another great video,many thanks !
Thanks ... another great tutorial
Thank you for helping me save loads of space.
this is excellent , thank you sir!
sadly i don't have a 'services' folder in my library folder. I have it in my System folder but i cannot add/change anything into that one...
you can just create one
Thanks for this great video. It set me on the right track, but using macOS Catalina meant that some of the options in the menus and some of the folders in the Application Support library weren't there. I couldn't use the Symlink App, but it was actually really easy to create the Symlinks via the Terminal. (If you are doing this make sure that you have admin priviledges and don't overwrite any essential operating system files! But again, thanks. Saved me a ton of space.
cool 👍
Sir. Thank you!!! it worked like a charm...thank you a 1000!!!!!!
My man @dancetech if you would be in a proximity, i'd kiss you right now! =D I mean... I has been bugging me for days and I have tried every other possible way on how to do it, including the way thru Terminal! I don't know why, but my version of MacOS / GarageBand was always able to detect something is wrong and attempted to download The Library again and again.
Yours tutorial together with me using a different formatting option for an external HDD, those were my last resorts (and I already reformatted the drive to APFS).
So thank you and it still works even in 2024 on Mac Mini - Sonoma 14.2.1 with GarageBand 10.4.11
Great tutorial! Thanks man!
does it works on macOS Catalina 10.15.6?, tried and applied every step as the video tells and had no result , neither the apple loops or other info appeared after i opened garage band, thanks
Genius! Thanks!!
Nicely explained, thank you
THANK YOU IT WORKS HIGH SIERRA LATEST VERSION
Top man, I need to do some tiding up.
What I find odd is you are describing the external SSD as if it is the "Macintosh HD" or boot drive ( SSD has the yellow external drive icon and Macintosh HD has the normal boot drive icon) , and performing file migration operations in seemingly reverse order. Am I missing something here?
I noticed the same thing too.
Errrr... Uhhh... if I remember correctly, on Macs all the way back to the old days all you need to create a symlinked folder is to "apple (command) + option + shift + drag folder" to destination and you get a symlinked folder!
EDIT: I take the above back after reading this from the symlink software: "A symbolic link is the "traditional" Unix equivalent of the System 7 style alias. Symbolic links are simply files that point back to a file located at a path contained inside the link. Aliases are files created by the macOS Finder using either the "Make Alias" command, or by holding down Command and Option while dragging a file.
Symbolic links have a few advantages over aliases. For one, they don't break if you create a symbolic link to a file and then replace the file with a file by the same name. Also, every Unix application can resolve symbolic links; some Unix applications have trouble resolving aliases. File servers in particular usually can't resolve aliases, but they have no problems resolving symbolic links. Apache, the Web server that comes with macOS, also resolves symbolic links but not aliases.
Of course, there are two problems with them. First, they do not track a file if the file is moved from its original path, so moving a file will break any symbolic links pointing to it. Second, the Classic environment can not resolve symbolic links, but it can resolve aliases"
You sir are a **SUPERSTAR**. a most wonderful and useful tutorial very well explained. I had a sticky moment because SERVICES wasn't easy to find on 10.13.6. Thanks to the comments below it was easily remedied. I have an interesting thought, when new loops and instruments are added what will the procedure be for adding them??? I guess download new content, OSX will create a new Apple Loops folder and then move it to the new location assuming the target disk is large enough?? You have a new and enthusiastic subscriber here... CHEERS
Hi Really great video, clear and concise. Thank you. I am having trouble dragging the syboliclinker to the services folder, it is disabled when i try to drag it there. The grey circle with a stroke through it. If i drag to the desktop the green plus shows. Is it a security thing?
same
Lovely!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks Heaps. So good. 30GB free! :D :D
man thank you very much ^^
WAIT--Ignore my last comment-It WORKS YIPPEEEEEEE!!!THANK YOU.
:) yes agreed, apple should add that feature inside logic especially now with smaller ssd drives
Perfect, thank you!!!
okay, can someone please explain why is this not working for me.
I have symlinked all three folders and it is working as I can see the symlinker arrow on Logic, GarageBand and the Apple Loops. However when I install new content in logic it does take the space from my hard drive. When I go to inspect the storage in About this Mac section it appears to be in Music Creation (Instrument Library) . When I click on it it takes me to my external drive, where I've moved all the content..so if it is there why the heck does take my internal storage space?? it doesn't make sense.
thank you so much :D I've been trying to figure this out for ages! very helpful video
tq dan, it really2 help
works in High Sierra 10.13.6 following all the steps showed here. I'm wondering though, I feel like every time I hit a note (with musical typing, haven't tried it yet with my midi keyboard) it sounds a little delayed, or in cases like sounds like Studio Horns that has 3 or more instruments stacked, takes a while to load all the samples..
Thanks :D :D :D saved my life!
Thank you so much for this. I was able to do this for the Apple Loops 😃Is there any chance you can do an update video as you can no longer find GarageBand in Library and Application Support on an M1 Mac. They have completely hidden the files and it's impossible to find. thank you so much.
Could I SymLink the actual GarageBand application as well?
How to do this process when new sounds and loops come ???
glad I've I found this , I copied the whole ox program onto an external hard drive, to discover later that iit will not update the ext. drive. so when mac comes up with any updates , well lets just say I gave up, would you recomend dumping everything on my ext.drive and simply copying GarageBand ( which is what wanted to use as my daw) when bought of recording again , I knew there was no room left on my laptop.tanks and please let me know if what I described sounds correct. :)
i'm not sure what you mean when you say "I copied the whole ox program onto an external hard drive"
I can understand that I hardly understood it either . What I want to do is move GarageBand and anything I need to record with it to an external drive which ,by the way has plenty of disc space .( my laptop does not ) Your video seemed to be the answer , not sure though . years ago I knew, then I got old and run over with technology , I used to smpte code 8 track reel to reels in connection with a mac to work run a midi program call performer ) about 4 inches think of maddening paper to read . sold it all after a year bought a guitar and wrote 10 songs in a few months . It has come so far , I thank you for taking the time to answer this , - billy
Thank you DT, this video is so clear and concise - bravo! So, now that the LPX 10.4.2 update gives you the ability to move your Logic sound library to an external drive without the symbolic linker, could you please do a video on how to install the 10.4.2 update if you've previously moved your Logic sound library using this method? Thanks again for all you do to help demystify LPX!
Hey, thanks for the additional info!
Hi, there's no "services" folder in my library folder... Can anyone help me, please?
Me too. Same problem. Running 10.14.5.
Shane Eberle If you create that folder yourself it works :)
@@pierrickjean2099 Thank you for letting me know. Much appreciated!
In Finder, if you click on your main Hard Drive (eg. Macintosh HD), then open the "Go" menu and while that is open, HOLD DOWN the "Alt" key... you will see "Library" appear in the list...
Click that and you will be in a protected version of the Library folder... which will contain the Services folder.
@@pierrickjean2099 just did this! sounds too simple to work but it really does!
thanks for this. just quick question. why do it this way instead of just going into logic sound library manager and choose relocate sound library? thx in advance!
Thanks for knowing this. Apple should implement this in OS invisible. Mac are supposed to be intuitive, remember? A dialog: Do you want to move the content on MacBook Air 128GB to USB? Yes. Drag it and OS will do that.
agreed, and you just reminded me my MB Air only has 128gb ssd drive!! :(
I have a cheap 128 stick in my and that was my plan when I bought the small model.Software on the root and data on a stick which can be moved.
You sir, are a scholar, and a gentleman!
My mac wouldn't let me open this application. :/
Oh, don't open it, just put it in the Service folder. Or you can try right click it, then click open if you really need to open something.
Great content. Are you copying the folders to an external drive or to another place on the mac? Sorry if this sounds stupid
external drive, cheers.
@@dancetech Thank you. I've been using logic for 20 months and following professional producer tutorials but I know nothing about the MacBook. So this has helped me. I also bought a how to use Mac tutorial so maybe I can improve my knowledge using a mac in the coming weeks and months
I lost mine from logic 9 how do I get the full library with all the guitars drums and vocals and sound FX the full files
Thank you! A question: when I opened back up the GarageBand app after following your steps, it immediately began to download a sound library. I assume this is because GarageBand is installed on my computer and the sound library is on my hard drive, even though there is the symbolic link. Do I just stop the download or is there another step necessary, maybe in GarageBand?
thank you SO MUCH
Isn't it exactly the same when creating an alias?????? I just did it that way with omnisphere bank.....
Did u do this same process with omisphere?
do i need to keep my separate disk connected?
Tried it with High Sierra and LP 10.4, seems to work fine as well...
Impossible to find or create the services folder. Nothing helps, Mac won’t grant permission to create a new services folder
I'm trying to follow but it seems like your pc set up is different from my mac
Great!
How do you make it so new .band files start/run from the external hard drive? My computer is so low on space!
Thank you!!!
amazing! thanks
If I download packs after setting up the symlinks, will the files go directly to my connected SSD or back to the Mac SSD, meaning I need to repeat the process?
What happens when there are new additional sounds to download?
It goes straight into the folder without any problems.
Anyone install this on an M1 MBPRO running Monterey? I tried and I'm unable to move it to the services folder.
What if we again want to transfer these loops and contents from external drive to internal disc ? We have to follow the same procedure ?
I moved everything, it moved, it still works, but the "Music Creation" tab of my Storage screen says that I am still using over 13 gb of my SSD? Garageband only, I don't have Logic installed, although I did move that folder too because it was the biggest of the three you mentioned
Genius!
I have tried your method three times and it worked once. After that it started asking me to download everything again and wouldn’t let me open up Logic Pro X. Any ideas why? I have followed everything exactly as you said in the video
No sorry, not sure what's the problem unless it's the OS (I'm on sierra, but high sierra onwards introduced a new file system). The new logic released a while back has a feature to move the library automatically, cant you use that instead?
Thanks a lot for the tip, it saved me a lot of space on my 256GB SSD system drive but now (july/12/2018) every time I open the App Store; It's inviting me over and over to download aditional content for Final Cut Pro X 1.0 (? / I have Final Cut Pro X 10.4 installed) and iTunes 12.8 (I am on Sierra), do you think it can be related to this symlink trick ? Thanks.
I use garageband and I get confusa putting together with Logic. Can you PLEASE have one video for GB alone?
so basically just alias?
can this be done with garageband as well
Can you do this for just one plugins library? Just want to for omnisphare
Amazingly clear - so if do this, and then purchase a product like EZ Keys, when I install it, will it automatically go into the new folder on the new drive (I plan on using an external drive). And second question, I backup my Mac to an external drive - so I assume it will back up this linked folder and if I have a crash and need to re-install, I would just do a time machine backup and everything would be back where it needs to be? And I guess third question - third party plugins - they end up residing where? And when you purchase new ones, they just go into the linked folder and appear on your external drive? Thanks for your help.
yes, but bare in mind that the new logic has a feature to relocate the sound library built in, so makes this technique redundant really unless you want to relocate the apple loops as well.
Using Mohave, I right-click on a folder (any folder) I don't get the "Services" choice (that you show in your video) . Below the colorful DOTS there are 4 selections:
Tags,
Folder actions set up…
New terminal tab at folder
New terminal at folder
And that's it - in your video you show the word "services" as a drop-down selection but that is not showing up over here.
Anybody have a solution?
FYI, I did use the idea in the comments of using the "Go to" to find the "Services" folder which was HIDDEN. I'm wondering if I need to make my own "Services" folder that is not hidden? In any event, if anybody has any solutions I would welcome them.
OK, I found that it appears I needed to click on the Symbolic Link file (that I had downloaded) which THEN started the program/gave me that icon with the picture of the ARROW shown in your video. Now "Make Symbolic Link" shows up at the very bottom now when right mouse clicking any folder (now a new 5th line below the colorful dots) :-) I'm hoping/guessing that will work!
I am running Catalina 10.15.6. I have the Create symbolic link in the services menu when control clicking. I can create symbolic links from my root drive, but when I try to create them on my external disk, nothing happens.
Can anyone help?
I got it!
Surely you could get away with putting Aliases in the original locations, called Logic, Garageband and Apple Loops?
apparently not, if the library gets an update, that (apparently) doesn't work
If the library gets an update, Logic restores the original folder(s) on your start up disc ... you'd have to go through the whole copy / alias routine everytime
Jon, for example I just updated to logic 10.4 - it includes 60-70gb of content!! and it all got added to the NEW disk location automatically & everything works 100%. That would not happen using Aliases as Clive Knapper says in the other reply here.
Thanks for a very easy to follow tutorial. Unfortunately my attempts have resulted in a couple hiccups. I'm running Sierra 10.12.6. I discovered I had no services folder, under Library so I created one, then downloaded symbolic linker and dragged it into new folder. But when I tried to create symlink by right clicking and opening services - there was no services but rather Create Symlink. So I clicked on that and the symlink appeared on my external drive - NOT my desktop as you demonstrated. I figured no biggie and dragged the symlink onto my desktop - but then got error message that since symbolic linker wasn't a recognized Apple App I couldn't proceed - and in fact most everything froze but I managed to do a restart. So... I'm pretty sure I can unlock the security preferences and download symlink again, but wondering if I've messed something up with the Services folder I created? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
this is what happened to me, there was no services when right clicking and the make symbolic link opened on my external drive.
Apple should follow pc and have a simple drag and place Now your done. But did anyone else get everything to work but apple loops?
