The BEST way to move Logics Sound Library to external hard drive

- Move Logic Pro X Sound Library and save internal hard drive space!
Steps:
1. Start by locating Logics Sound Library. Go to / Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support / Logic
2. Move the "Logic" folder to your external drive the the desired folder. In my case I used the following:
DISK NAME / Sound Library / Logic Content / Logic
“Logic Content” is the name of the folder I created. “Logic” is the moved folder.
3. Now let's delete the original content on the System drive.
Delete the Logic folder inside /Library/Application Support/
4. Open Terminal
5. Type in the following: sudo -s
It will prompt you for your password. Type your password and press enter.
6. Next, type ln -s followed by a space.
7. Drag and drop the Logic folder from your external drive onto the terminal window.
8. Next drag and drop the Application Support folder inside the main Library.
9. Press back space to get rid of the blank space and enter /Logic to name your link “Logic”. You should now see:
ln -s /Volumes/DISK NAME/Logic\ Content/Logic /Library/Application\ Support/Logic
10. Hit Enter. Now you have linked Logic Library to your external hard drive.

For anyone coming to this video in 2024, there's now a built in option in the top navigation. Logic Pro > Sound Library > Relocate Sound Library
Thanks - this is much easier and works with Logic 11.
the way you've singlehandedly solved two issues that have been eating me alive all week.... i can't thank you enough
Always concise and straight to the point with the Logic videos man. Appreciate It!
Bruhh!! You Straight Legit!! I had been lookin through other vids trying different ways over and over again and nothin would wrk it had me thinkn the new high sierra update patched it or somethin but luckily i found your vid and your method works!! Thanks a lot!
Life saver! Thank you SO much for the clear, concise instructions. Appreciate it!
Really great video. Very simple straight forward and clean. Thanks much!
I just need to say THANK YOU!! This video has helped me over and over again because my computer has crashed my links to my hard drive numerous times
Great help! After getting a new external drive, I moved all my Logic sound library content to the new drive, stupidly forgetting that I should have done it within Logic using the "Logic Pro X \ Sound Library \ Relocate Sound Library" command.
When Logic inevitably couldn't find the sound library files, rather than download and install them all again to the new location, I went hunting. Twenty-plus RUclips videos, websites, and forum posts later...I found this, which actually gave me exactly what I needed! Bravo!!
Cool I had a similar problem too after applied "Logic Pro X \ Sound Library \ Relocate Sound Library" command and download everything to an external drive, I had once forgot to plug the external drive when opening Logic Pro. It started to re-download all the things and I couldn't relocate the external drive path. It seems I can have this fix using the instruction in this tutorial :) Will try later.
@@llrl1061 Did it work? I'm trying this tomorrow on a friends system. He moved all his files onto an external RAID through logic and now the sounds aren't coming up.
Excellent one! Got rid of low space issues, instantly....
Literally just bought an external hard drive today. You the goat
Thank you, man! Your directions are super clear and I was able to follow thru and make it happen. Greatly appreciated. I subscribed for any other goodies you may have.
Brilliant!!! Used this method to move more folders and created more space. Thank you
My english too bad to tell you how grateful I am !! Many thanks from France !!
Now THAT'S what I call one of the best tutorials I've ever watched.
EDIT: There is an easier way WITHOUT the terminal. After copying and deleting the files, you go to your external hard drive, you right click on the copied file, you click on "create alias", then you copy the alias to your application support and delete it on your hard drive. That's it! The terminal way isn't wrong, but it works way faster than without
It does NOT as of Logic 10.5
Adarkjet oh ok but does it work with the terminal command?
Usually, yes this would work. But Logic periodically has system updates so simply creating an alias is not advanced enough to cut it; that is where symbolic links come in to play, replacing the aliases with a much more complex alias that can handle these updates.
I did this ages ago with logic and also with my iTunes library and iPhone backups. It works flawlessly.
Symbolic links are amazing 🙌
Awsome tutorial! Sure saved some room on my Macbook Pro drive! Thanks a Bunch!!
Thank you so much for this!!
I've been trawling the internet trying to find this for hours using a simple "make alias" link
You're a star, thank you :)
Yey! Thanks so much! I was frustrated with this issue for a few days
Timely solution. Just about to dive back into sound and leaning heavily towards Logic Pro. But have been on the fence due to little space left on my 500Gb SSD. I have enough for the app and some wiggle room, but not enough for the sound library - not even to download.
Question: Is it possible to instal the Sound Library directly to an external SSD drive, bypassing the download to internal drive?
EXCELLENT ..worked perfectly. One note though..Exiting 'Terminal' ..hit 'Terminate' to exit ..NOT Cancel.
Reading the comments to find this, exactly. But....how to, or where is that "terminate" that should be hit?
where is the "terminate" ???
Cool Video! Thank you man, easy and quick explanation!
Worked for me. If you are doing this with other folders such as Native Instruments that have two words involved, be sure to make sure \ is after first word just like in the terminal window.
Legend!
Good catch!
Just to expand on this for those who are curious, the '\' is the 'escape' character in Linux. It tells the terminal to interpret the character after it as literally (as ASCII) instead of as a command, flag, option, etc...
Play around with it in the terminal by using special characters with and without it in front of them
As an alternative, i believe you could use an underscore to fill the space betwixt words as well
THANKS MAN YOU SAVED ME FROM LOADS OF WORRIES...
I wonder what the reasons are for the thumbs down? Very odd. A helpful, non controversial subject. People are strange (as "poet" Jim Morrison once said).

Thumbs down are from trolls, never mind them... very helpful video
its probably bots.
@@Slesaint17 trolls, bots, or people who cant follow simple instructions or skimmed the video and deleted something lol ... idiots basically
This worked perfectly in Big Sur. Thanks!
Yo Adam, I plan on doing this soon for my home studio but do I need to have my external hard drive on me at all times? cause I have a Mac but it's the laptop not desktop. So would I need to carry around my hard drive all around the house or any places I go every time I use logic lol?
Tnx for the video but I still have a question. Right now my sample packs and finished projects are saved on 1 external hard drive. If I use these files, lets say to make a drum kit in the EXS24, Logic remembers that does files come from this drive. Now the problem is that if something would happen to this drive I would lose all my samples etc. because Time Machine only makes backups of my internal drive. My plan was to buy a second hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner to make it back up automatically. My question is, will Logic Pro X find those samples on the copied drive just as it would on the original drive? Stated differently, does Logic treed the back up drive like the original because it's an exact copy of this original drive? Because if that's not the case I have to manually add all the files again to the drum kits I made in the EXS24. I also won't be able to open a project unless I manually select all the sounds used in that project. Is their somebody in the comments who has an answer on this question?
This video was super-helpful. Thanks so much!
I have also faced the same problem that was damn too much frustrating, finally i got solution for that. just go to Sound library and reallocate it your SSD and download it there. It will take 5-10 hours. After downloading it create symlink file in ssd and paste to Application support folder in your internal hard drive and reopen and reindex all your loops. Do same for Apple loop in its own directory. And again reinstall your logic pro with dmg file. Now you will see all loops get installed.
Thank you so much, this is from Nov 2020. I made a small mistake then I did again and now is working properly !!
Hello Adam! Thanks for the video, how do you export your Native Instrument Library or Omnisphere to your external hard drive?
This is truly the best way! Thank you man!
You are THE MAN. Thanks so much for this!
This didn't work for me. I'm not sure what to do with the terminal window, someone below posted an update on that but it never seemed to work. Any help would be appreciated
Can I get some help? It’s saying Logic Content/Logic is a Directory and it doesn’t make the link
Thanks Adam! This was very helpful
Thank you, very helpful!
Thanks a lot! Very useful
I`ve racked my head with Alchemy presets but this helped me
Thanks! also FYI, if you don't have the external drive in when you run logic and it creates a new logic folder, you must repeat the last step
if I right click the folder on my external HD and select "Make Alias" and move that to the App Support folder, would that be the same as what you did in Terminal?
Thank you! its worked really great sir !!
I got a question. If I wanted to take my projects, samples, plugins, and sound library to use on any computer with logic would I just copy the whole logic folder? And if so would I still need to make a symbolic link?
If the Logic app is going to a (potentially slower) external HD to retrieve samples, does it slow down your processing speed? (Consider that the internal drive is an SSD and the external is a traditional HD.
Amazing tutorial! Thank you brother!
You saved a lot of space man!!
Very helpful, buddy! Thanks!
Life saver my man, thanks so much
What external harddrive would you reccommend that I purchase @imamusicmogul?
Can this also Be done with sounds from a VST?
Thanks bud !! Helped a lot
Dope video!! its a must to do!! Thank you for sharing!
enjoy the rest of the day and keep up the good work!
Definitely a must do. It’s better to keep on superstar drive plus saves up a lot of space.
check your Instagram dm bruh!!
thanx for everything!
I also do this for my kontakt library too!! tons of space saved!
@@Wizardatwill Hey Wiz. How do you do it for Kontakt Library? Any tutorials?
ABSOLUTLY AMAZING! THANKS!
hey, question, please. after doing the terminal I don't find my logic link folder in my application support folder like yours is am I doing anything wrong?
I assume this is the same for VST and plugins or is it best to keep the vst's and plugins on your main drive and only move sound libraries to an external?
Once you do this, will there be any difficulty reopening old projects? (which had the instruments on the internal)
always can count on you sir! Thanks for this.
Perfectooo! Subbed with this one Vid. Truly see value in Content. Does this process apply the same with Spectrasonics and any other large Apps/Plugins/VST? Cheers!!
Awesome! Thanks a lot! Been having issues with Big Sur in relocating files! Godbless!
Much appreciate it man. Love from India!
Oh hell yeah. I cant be more grateful for this. thank you
Great Video! What happens in u remove the harddrive, for example when u take ur setup to another studio? What happens if u open a project without your harddrive connected? Thanks!
This video is priceless! Thank you a lot!! 🙂
What do we do with the open terminal window?
Great vid! Thanks so much
Awesome video. Thank you, bro! One question. Do you have a video explaining how you can add another sound libraries to externals such as if I install Nexus? I hear you can have ALL of your sounds from all programs on external drives to save space. Am I making any sense? lol
Thanks so much for your help. This worked perfectly. :)
Solid! Best way to date.
Super short, and Super helpful. Hola
is there any specific external hard drive that you recommend? was wondering if i needed a NVMe M.2 SSD with enclosure or just a regular 4TB external hardrive.
What do we do with the terminal? Can we terminate the running process and exit it out or leave it?
Thx man ! Very nice !
Fantastic! Thank you.
question. each time i relocate them with all the guide you gave us its all ok. when i open my logic again and download the library the little arrow disappears from teh application support. ?
Your the MAN for this video bro BIG UPS 🙏🏾🙌🏾 #TrendSetterSalute 🚨
What happens if you want to download additional sound library content? Where will it go? Into the new location or will it create another folder on the local hdd?
Lieberry
🤣
seriously
That reminds me, now that I have an iPhone, I no longer have use for a Blackbrary! :-) Okay, kidding aside in case the dude who created this video reads this comment, I'm sure you've taken enough heat for your pronunciation of library - I want to tell you that this was an EPIC video and extremely helpful! Rock on!
@@voicetube"I'm a music mogul" (important person in the music industry??) When I hear Lie-Berry in a RUclips video the credibility factor takes a hit.

Hey I accidentally missed the part about deleting the space in Terminal. I redid it but the 30 gigs I deleted didnt seem to reflect in free space even after clearing my recycle bin ...any thoughts?
Thanks a lot! You saved my day.
I have had the Logic 7.2 sound library on an external disk (40GB) for a long time, and effectively the Logic alias from the Applicatin support redirects me to the external disk. But after using Logic with the alias correctly, and reopening Logic, this alias disappears, and in its place the original folder appears again with the minimum, 210 MB.
What's going on?
Jesus Mary and Joseph, this was perhaps the most helpful video of all time. Can I buy you lunch? Dinner? Pay off your mortgage? THANK YOU! Sincerely, MacBook Air user.
know what you say dude you'll be surprised if he suddenly stay at your front door. Anywayzzz this dude deserves to be treated (y) but he deserves to be treated
Yess!!
What if I buy a new very strong computer, I use migration assistant to move evrything from my MacBook Pro to lest say a iMac Pro (I’m not an expert but they should be strong enough to run Logic and its libraries without using an external drive). How can I move all my sound library back to the iMac Pro so I don’t have to plug in my external drive every time?
Great Vid, thanks for the help!!
It has the arrow on the . logic folder under application software yet my sounds are all gone know like the stock pianos etc
Like crystal explanation, Thanks.
Ur amazing man thank for uploading this video it’s dope and very very helpful
Thank you bro! This make a lot of free space on my 128Go SSD!
I am the nr. 3000 thinking that this is a good video. Great work. Thanks for it.
sweet......thanks mate. Very useful info
So I just switched from Ableton to Logic yesterday and I’m still trying to find my way around it. And I have these two questions for you: I’ve downloaded tons of drum and sample packs and already used them in ableton but I can’t find them anywhere in logic. How can I access them ? And secondly how do I make my own drum rack with the sounds that i like and not use the ones that are already in logic because honestly those are bullshit... thank you
Question: what is the performance difference between working with your music library on an external hard drive versus the internal drive? What kinds of drives and connections did you use? What are the sizes of the sound libraries you use?
I'm helping a friend port his growing music collection to a larger and faster external drive.
It has to be an SSD
ive done all these steps and i also moved all reciepts from the system to my library yet my logic sounds are not all there when i use my hardrive and open up logic
tks in 2020 man! amazing tip, save my space in hd!
Is there any reason I can't use this same method to route mac HD altogether?
Your like the Bob Ross of Logic and Music production 😎
What if I have outdated sound library content on my Logic Sound Library Manager?
Question ? I moved my library content to an external drive a while ago. But I want to update my logic but I am curious because of the location change do you know if i will run into difficultie??
Quick question: do you keep your Logic projects on the same external ssd as your sample libraries?
i keep it on icloud
thanks b, this really helped me a lot
You're the man!!! Can't thank you enough!!!!
Thanks for your help.
