Thank you so much Chris, I am nearly out of space on my HDD so I can now move my logic instruments and couldn't believe you used Arteria as an example and that's exactly what I have so over it all goes to my WD external drive and so much space was released.
First of all, thank you for all the great & informative videos regarding Logic Pro & Music Audio Production. Recently I purchased 1 G-Technology 1 TB SSD (for Audio backups), 1 G-Technology 1 TB SSD (for Virtual Instrument backups, 1 G-Technology 1 TB SSD (for Video backups), 1 4 TB HDD (for total computer backups), and 1 7 Port USB Hub to connect all of these external backup systems to my MacBook Pro (2015 Mac Model). Of course, the purpose for me is to backup & work on my recording projects and not run out of storage space on my computer for audio, virtual instrument library, music-related videos. My goal is to keep my computer storage to a minimum and get the most horsepower possible from my computer while working on all of my musical projects. I want to free up my computer yet have all of my songs, recording projects still at my fingertips. If I back up all of my audio files, folders, apps/programs thoroughly could I delete all of the files, folders, apps/programs currently on my computer, save them to my backup systems, and get more horsepower from my apps/programs? I just want to ask a person who knows for certain if this is possible and be advisable to actually do.
I'm finally returning to using Logic as my main DAW on my Mac after several years of Nuendo on a PC. NI seems to make it easier to solve location problems once they've occurred than to avoid them happening in the first place. Really good info as always. Thanks so much.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Milo Kenneth thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
You can actually use an exterrnal drive that has time machine if you activate time machine on it after installing the sound library! Found that out randomly
Thanks for sharing all these details, especially the logic ones. I think Native Instrument's approach makes perfect sense to their library because it could potentially be so huge that one couldn't practically relocate it all at once, especially once it's larger than many laptop's internal drives.
Perfect timing! Just ordered an external SSD in order to move the all the big sound libraries off my new M1 Mac Mini. This helps a LOT! Thank you Chris!
Extremely helpful video. It mainly makes me just want to buy a larger internal HD in the first place to avoid things, but extremely useful to know what the situation is.
Mac OS Ventura 13.4.1 with MBP M2, Logic Pro 10.7.8: I cannot relocate the Logic Pro sound library to an external HD without Logc asking every time I start the laptop if I want to start Logic in basic or complete mode, followed by the program downloading the essential sounds, every time, even though I already have downloaded them. The only solution is to have the sound library located on the Macintosh HD...
Hey Chris, ever used a symbolic link? There's a really tedious geek-oriented way to do this in Terminal, but it's a lot easier to use a third-party application to make it easy. With that installed, any and all content folders, including Apple Loops, can be relocated to an external or alternate internal drive (my preference), make a symlink, and move that symlink to the original location of the source folder. This has worked every time for me, and also works when installing new content for existing plugins or sample libraries. Before Logic Pro could do the relocation internally, the symlink was the only way to get this done; it's still the more complete way to move all the big content files off the main drive to cut down on its load when using Apple Loops, Kontakt, NI sample-based plugins, the same stuff you covered in this video. Which is damn good and highly helpful in itself by the way. To get started, search "Mac symbolic link". Up to the individual which approach is best in individual situations. And by the way, Symbolic Linker does work in High Sierra and Mojave despite what one comment asserted. Don't know about Catalina or Big Sur.
But when i relocate, doesn't it not just make a kopie from the folders? i have the Arturia V lab transferred to my HDD but when i erase the files from my computer he can't open the VST ...
I followed all the steps until 5:10, when I want to give Full Disk Access to Logic Pro it doesn't come up in the scrollbar (in fact the only app that shows is Waves Tune) so I can't give it full disk access and move my library. Please help this is so frustrating and I can't find anyway to fix this problem anywhere.
If something happens to my hard drive, will the entire sound library be lost since I wouldn't be able to relocate it back to my mac from the damaged drive?
Hi Chris. I just relocated all my Native Instrument folders to an external drive and a 'Relocate All' option came up for all the libraries, so it was just one simple click to fix them all.
Excellent as usual. I just want my music projects to run and save to my external HD. Is it as simple as relocating my logic folder from my regular HD to my external?
I have recently come across your video after being away from music programming for a while, just wanted to say that they are very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Great video! Very useful! I am having an issue with some of my 3rd party plug ins loading instruments from other plugins. Can you provide a video on how to resolve this issue so that the 3rd party plugins will only have the instruments relevant to that plugin? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still the same problem exist when I launch that particular plugin in Logic ProX 10.4.8/OS High Sierra 10.13.6 Please help...pulling my hair out in frustration! Thank you.
I would like to ask you how can I transfer all of Native Access library to my external HD. It's taking too much space on my HD in my I-Mac. Thank you for your help.
Hi, may I know is possible to move all my effects plugins in logic to an external hard disk? Does logic only able to move the logics sounds library to an external hard disk ? because my mac mini only has 245 GB .
I have been battling with the presets, software instruments, and mainly battery 4 samples_kits and libraries!!! Battery is prolly the best drum kit and kit maker IMO but damn it acts stupid sometimes! One time I deleted all my samples off my cpu by accident trying to start fresh loading kits in, like I wanted to erase everything I had loaded into the battery library and start fresh making kits. 🙃 I was able to fix it with a little work but ever since then battery loses everything man!
This was interesting. Thanks! What about setting up Logic to record audio to an external drive for better performance? Probably not an issue with SSDs but I’ve been curious about how to do it and if it’s worth the trouble. Thanks!
Hey Chris first off great videos. But you can actually run Logic of an external drive. It is quite simple. You install macOS on an external drive and run Logic from there. I’ve been doing this for a while as I don’t want to pay for the ridiculous storage prices Apple offers. So I have two computers the internal one which I use for personal stuff and the external that is a 4tb SSD RAID configuration. The crazy part is that it is way faster than my internal SSD. Cheers 🍻
Very helpful video. Thanks. On a related issue: I use Logic Pro and would like to remove GarageBand and any of its files (including sound libraries) that Logic Pro DOES NOT USE. Can anyone share or point me to info about which of GarageBand's files Logic Pro DOES use?
Can you save stuff to a cloud and use it? I am out of space and had a external HD but prob left it at a gig or something. Mac HD full, would love the idea of having this stuff work from cloud.
How does Mac identify the individual external drive onto which you moved Sound Library so that it refuses to use that drive as Sound Library on another Mac running Logic? I'm wondering if that drive "identifier" info can possibly be hacked/patched (maybe using a drive/system utility app) to "trick" Logic to use that same drive as Sound Library on two (or more) different Macs.
Hi, Quick question that i can't seem to fina anywhere online. Im looking for the exact file location of the old EX24 sampler instruments as there is 1 particular guitar sound (Los Freakos) that is not in the newer versions of logic that I have on my time machine old logic that I would like to try and copy paste them into the sampler. Any tips?
So I just got a new computer, I figured I would need to relocate the sound library again. However, relocate is showing that the sound library already exists there and doesn’t allow it to be used to relocate. All my sounds are already usable but I’m afraid they might be on the computer’s hard drive. I’m assuming I have to redownload Arturia plug-ins and not the sound library?
Hey I really appreciate your content… could you please do an updated video for 2022 for installing products like Arturia V collection 8 or the soundwide izotope bundle (on sale now) on an external hard drive at the start, Immediately from purchase? This would really help immensely. i’m finding that even after installing ONE vst (cherry audio dreamsynth) my projects are taking longer to load (“loading plugins” dialog box). Well I’m excited to install more plugins and vsts, I’m really absolutely needing to make 100% sure that all of the software I have purchased doesn’t slow down my machine or make logic run more slowly… Any advice or tutorials on this would be really really great thank you
i have an issue with playing logic drummer with my midi electric drum. there is a high latency and sound goes on and off . it started sometime back but now i have also move logic sound library to my external hard disk . how do i banter this problem since i have sessions i need to record drums for but the problem is a pain in a A**
I got a question, so my sampler (new exs24) presets I've made in the past I move to my external ssd and when upload sessions from my ssd those sounds are missing now any way to fix this project where I can have logic look into the ssd for those presets?
I’m in a real jam and need serious help . I accidentally updated my mac and now I’m not able to use logic as good . I am going to downgrade the software back to high Sierra . Is there anyway I can save my template I made with all my plug ins and put it in a hard drive . BECUASE I will need to wipe my Mac seeing as I have no time machine . Can I save my templates and channel strip settings and my logic and possibly plugins on a hard drive ??? Or Atleast the template and I’ll buy the plug ins again … pls help .
I saved the entire sound library to an external hard drive, yet, when I want to use them in logic, it seems I have to download them to my MacBook hard drive... Im a bit confused here
For a situation where you have Logic on two Macs, is it possible to use the same external SSD to house the sound libraries, assuming you did the relocation process for each Mac? So one drive but a separate file path to each sound library. Thanks!
Is there any way to make a backup of downloaded Logic Sound Library files to later restore to use with a Logic Pro installation (so that you don't have to go through the long 60+GB download process again)? (You could hopefully compress/Zip the backup into one more compact file.)
Great video!! I understand I can't save sound library to a drive that is running time machine, but can you save to a drive that is partitioned where part of that drive is running time machine?
Yes you can. Just make sure you take all the files on your external off and onto another one first. I just partioned my seagate and it fucking erased everything that was on it. Luckily nothing to important was on it. But I did have some unfinished logic projects I was working on in it. But I was able to move the sound library to it after doing this. I’ll never use time machine ever again. What’s the fucking point?
I've got a question. Let's say I move the sound/instrument library to an external hard drive. Will I be able to still use those stock instruments in logic even though they are off site? I know the sound library takes up a big chunk, about 67 gb of space, so it would be wise to relocate it on a seperate hard drive. But, why would I do that? I wouldn't have any software instruments that comes with logic?
Do you recommend running the External SSD drive directly into the USB port on the Macbook? I have an anker USB port but wasn't sure if there was latency caused or not by USB ports.
If I move it, does it mean that I need to connect my harddrive every time I make music? How long would it take to start to have the instruments available and be ready to make music?
Yes you should have it plugged in and visible on the desktop before you start Logic. Depending on the external hard drive you use, the experience should be the same as if you were using your local drive.
Thanks, Chris, I have an external 1 TB SSD that I could use for my 2014 Macbook pro which also has an internal 1TB SSD. Should I put my Software instruments + My Projects on the one External SSD? Will that help with the performance?
Hi.haven’t read all the way through but I moved everything( including logic itself)to an ssd thunderbolt external hardrive by applying a symbolic link which was free.the speed is amazing and it always updates to that hardrive.what do you think?
hello, and sorry for my bad English... question, once I have relocated my library, do I have to erase the library on my mac, or all the content on mu mac has move by alone itself ??? Thank you for your help.
Looks like he put the files from his Mac internal drive, in trash once he moved everything over. Personally I would want to confirm this was working before deleting anything.
Hi there: Setting up a new MBP and have found this helpful, but still struggling with something: When it comes to third-party plugins, how do you decide what lives on your internal vs. external drive? The wisdom I keep hearing is to keep *plugins* local and *sample libraries* external. But for a lot of plugins, those distinctions are blurred, and many smaller companies have basic installers vs. fancy standalone apps that let you manage the content. Is there any simple rule of thumb to follow?
Vst and Vst3 are fine for running off external HDs as most DAW's and plugin hosts allow for selecting custom folders and libraries , but I've not found a Host that allows this with AU ... I assume this is an Apple thing , so in my example all My AU's live on the internal drive and My Vst/Vst3 live on an external SSD . FYI I run all my DAW's /Hosts off eternal as well : Live , MPC , Garageband , vPlayer 2 , Carla , etc. I've never had issues with it obviously Faster drives and interfaces are better so SSD , Thunderbolt , USB C , or 3.0 is ideal , but that said I did the same with old USB2.0 7200rpm drives in for my now old 2010 iMac with no issues then either . Cheers
This n=does not work a s of 11-18-21 I love you VIds bit this one is not working. SO i;m justy gong to leace it on inty iMAC's Internal HD ...I wish not to ( PLEASE SOME TELL AS OF TODAY WHAT TO CLICK ON AND MOVE THIS TO IT''S NEW LOCATION. Thank you, George Amodei
Will the external drive work on different mac that you own etc mac mini to a MacBook air running Logic Pro, Mainstage or Garageband and will it work on the M1 chip?
I have a 2011 iMac and still have the aif files for the Garageband sampler instruments including all the extra jam pack sounds and loops. Is there a way to just move them off or is it safe to delete them? I don't use GarageBand anymore. Also, are they just for the original version of GarageBand?
CAN YOU INSTALL PLUGINS ( VST's ) on a external drive and use them on all your computers ??? I think that is really what everyone wants to know, including me.. and how is it just to select the external drive when you instal a vst or what, I have only used my harddrive so far, thats why i ask, but it seems stupid if you can use a extrenal drive, and have all your plugins ready on what ever computer you use ? :) hope anyone can help
Can anybody help me with native instruments sound library? I have been doing the steps to move the sound library of NI to an external hard drive and I change the pathway so that Native recognizes where it is, but it still leaves the repair sign. As if it can't read it on my hard drive
Best and most complete guide on how to manage your sound libraries on Logic Pro. Thanks, man!!!
Such a beautiful song. I love the words, the piano, the mix everything. I can listen to this forever
Thank you so much Chris, I am nearly out of space on my HDD so I can now move my logic instruments and couldn't believe you used Arteria as an example and that's exactly what I have so over it all goes to my WD external drive and so much space was released.

@Milo Kenneth thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm.

@Milo Kenneth it worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass !
@Phoenix Trent You are welcome :)
Best and most informative user-friendly video I've seen in a while! Thanks for sharing 👍
You can actually use an exterrnal drive that has time machine if you activate time machine on it after installing the sound library! Found that out randomly
haha it's true! I found that out the same way
You can just partition off a section for time machine also. I have an 8tb external drive. I partitioned off 2 tb for time machine
One of many vids that makes it worth subscribing. Thanks for your altruistic efforts!
Your channel has helped me so much over the past year, thank you so much 👏🏻
Thanks for sharing all these details, especially the logic ones. I think Native Instrument's approach makes perfect sense to their library because it could potentially be so huge that one couldn't practically relocate it all at once, especially once it's larger than many laptop's internal drives.
Excellent and clear explanation. I enjoy your efforts to create all these LPX videos. Thank you
Perfect timing! Just ordered an external SSD in order to move the all the big sound libraries off my new M1 Mac Mini. This helps a LOT! Thank you Chris!
yeah I just ran into this. my NI complete ultimate is 870GB. this was a timely video.
Hi! Which external SSD are you using??
Thank yo use much, I just got Logic recently and noticed I was getting down to it on HD space. This freed up a lot!
Extremely helpful video. It mainly makes me just want to buy a larger internal HD in the first place to avoid things, but extremely useful to know what the situation is.
I will use alias folders for linking to external most times, seems to help when working without drive
Thanks for the info

Ableton gang , but ty for this info. my life is changed
Hey Chris, ever used a symbolic link? There's a really tedious geek-oriented way to do this
in Terminal, but it's a lot easier to use a third-party application to make it easy. With that
installed, any and all content folders, including Apple Loops, can be relocated to an external
or alternate internal drive (my preference), make a symlink, and move that symlink to the

To get started, search "Mac symbolic link". Up to the individual which approach is best
in individual situations. And by the way, Symbolic Linker does work in High Sierra and
Mojave despite what one comment asserted. Don't know about Catalina or Big Sur.
Yes,used a symbolic link to transfer logic and all content over to a thunderbolt external.4 updates so far and every time it’s been successful.
And it speeds up logic of course.
But when i relocate, doesn't it not just make a kopie from the folders? i have the Arturia V lab transferred to my HDD but when i erase the files from my computer he can't open the VST ...
Are the instruments still accessible during a session when on the external HD?
I followed all the steps until 5:10, when I want to give Full Disk Access to Logic Pro it doesn't come up in the scrollbar (in fact the only app that shows is Waves Tune) so I can't give it full disk access and move my library. Excellent video! This really helped me. Thank you.
This was SO helpful. Thank you!
If you want Time Machine to back up your external drives, they have to be formatted Mac-Os Extended, not FAT32, or APFS.
Exceptional knowledge as always- thank you for improving me
For that your gonna have to go to your logic folder and move it to your external. Then you can delete it off your internal
Fantastic and informative brilliant stuff again from you 😎👍
Beautiful! Very informative, learned exactly what I needed to and more…
I have recently come across your video after being away from music programming for a while, just wanted to say that they are very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for what you do! Could you possibly do a video of how to move Templates, Channel Strip Settings, and Presets to another computer with Logic?
Thanks. So how do you transfer to a new Mac - via a ext harddrive?
Ohh nice thanks man!! Appreciate your efforts
Got it. But should I be saving (and or moving) my logic sessions to an external hard drive as well?
Can you run Vsts on the actual external hard Drive?
You no longer have to open terminal to create a link? It just works now?
Great video! Very useful! I am having an issue with some of my 3rd party plug ins loading instruments from other plugins. I would like to ask you how can I transfer all of Native Access library to my external HD. It's taking too much space on my HD in my I-Mac. Thank you for your help.
Great stuff. is there any benefit to using an SSD ext drive for the library?
Hi, may I know is possible to move all my effects plugins in logic to an external hard disk? Does logic only able to move the logics sounds library to an external hard disk ? because my mac mini only has 245 GB .
Perfect and clear 👍🏻
Great information
Great info - thank you. Not being able to share those across systems is super dumb.
Thanks so much. Was have trouble

Very helpful video. Thanks. On a related issue: I use Logic Pro and would like to remove GarageBand and any of its files (including sound libraries) that Logic Pro DOES NOT USE. Can anyone share or point me to info about which of GarageBand's files Logic Pro DOES use?
i need to do this but with my logic project files
and plugins
So, if my xternal drives are greyed out, it’s likely because Time Machine is backing up there, so stop that AND delete any back ups ?
Thank you very much.
Thanks Chris! You always the Awesome one! So, would you do so? And it really helps for better performance? Actually, heard this "theory" years ago!
this was super super helpful

Hey bro, if i save my plugin content on external ssd/hdd will I be able to use that for both windows and mac???
Can I just take the entire NI Folder and move it to my External all at once?
so except logic lib, can Arturia/NI can be shared on a single hard drive with multiple Mac computers ?
Great content
If I move it, does it mean that I need to connect my harddrive every time I make music? How long would it take to start to have the instruments available and be ready to make music?
Yes you should have it plugged in and visible on the desktop before you start Logic. Depending on the external hard drive you use, the experience should be the same as if you were using your local drive.
Actually you can move your plugins into a hard drive.. you just need to change settings using terminal
thanks man to the point, no bullshit acting like an idiot like most. Greatness and thorough. I appreciate ya!
@@jennifermcnuttmusic6353 Thank you, but now we are two in the same question hahahahaha
My external hard drive doesn’t have time machine on it and it won’t let me relocate it
Will the external drive work on different mac that you own etc mac mini to a MacBook air running Logic Pro, Mainstage or Garageband and will it work on the M1 chip?
I have a 2011 iMac and still have the aif files for the Garageband sampler instruments including all the extra jam pack sounds and loops. Is there a way to just move them off or is it safe to delete them? I don't use GarageBand anymore. Also, are they just for the original version of GarageBand?
my system preferences doesnt show "full disk access" its actually the only one out the ones that shows on your screen i dont have lol
