Should you save your Logic Projects as Packages or Folders? Is one better than the other? Does it matter? Find out the differences in today's video. - Видеоклипы
Use a package INSIDE a folder 📁 that you name after the project, and your bounces can also live in that folder. 👌
Best of both worlds 🌎

Thanks for this very helpful video. I’m just getting into Logic and this will be useful for starting off right with file management.
I really like your videos, no beating around the bush, clear, fluid. Information and efficiency. I learn a lot.
Thanks for your work.
Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly. I have yet to see such a clear explanation. Very much appreciated.
1st video I see of you. Videos like this, that go straight to the point, are great. Subscribed.
New mb pro is on the way, so I needed this one.
Package file types and Project Alternatives all the way. I could explain so many reasons why it’s a better system. I guess it depends on how often you need to use the Finder to alter the contents of your project which I do within Logic. All my bounces go in my ~/Music/Logic/Bounces folder. There’s a reason for choice but I find this system extremely reliable with redundancies that pay off.
Thanks for this video!
Now I understand this option way better :)
As long I don't need to share a project with somebody outside my studio I use packages.
When you open one project then another it's far more convenient for me to browse among single package files than open an other layer of folder just for loading it.
Regarding the bounces I store all of them in a separate folder dedicated to the bounces of my finished works (= the pieces somebody else is allowed to listen).
Hey Chris, I’d say, why not save both ways? A package to share and a folder for tracking components!

Great really helpful!!
Packages for me!
Great Chris, I'm with you, much prefer File bouncing, so easy to get to the parts within a project.
Nice info thanks
Thank you!
Great vid subscribed!
I just switch to logic X and it’s beyond every expectation for me (solo song writer)
Great. Thanks.
One benefit I can see to using packages and bouncing is that if you have a whole album of packages for each song in a single folder for that album, and you bounce each, they will all be in the same place when you go to import them into a mastering project so you don’t have to go to the bounce folder for each song individually.
That being said, I still tend to use folders.
Timing is everything - Just had this discussion yesterday. We have been using packages and Dropbox for quite some time without issue. Perhaps it's time for a change?
Nice!
thanks
Still prefer packages. Easy to access the files I need. But a good explanation for folks who aren’t sure how it works.
I’m only just starting out with Logic Pro. I’m mostly comfortable with Reason, but I plan to be more proficient with both DAWs.
Thank you for all your content I can look back over 👍
Thanks, well explained, as are all of ya vids :) Folders for me too, don't want my bounces to be homeless! xD
One thing I recently found is if you want to airdrop a Logic song packages have all the audio files but for some reason I tried to airdrop to my laptop for minor edits some audio didn’t move across with the rest. So I now save as packages
I have a question. Just got a new Mac Studio and had been using a MacBook Pro. Always saved as folders. But if I want to move something from my MacBook to the Mac Studio by Air Drop, can I save it as a Package, Air Drop It, Open it on the Mac Studio, and THEN save it from there as a folder again? Would I be able to delete the package after I did that? Thanks (Great video - terrific explanation).
Also there is a potential issue with services like Dropbox and OneDrive. They don't always play well with Apple's Package files, on occasion they get converted to folder and thus corrupted the package. Which is why a folder can be beneficial.
Oh!
@@SmilusMusic zip the package...
I've found with packages that if you are recording audio into Logic then open the project on another machine, the recorded files are missing.
I do want to point out that when using a package, a bounce is not only placed wherever the user chooses to save it, there is also a saved bounce file within the package contents -> media -> audio files, so truthfully Packages really just seem like Apple styled folders (though a truly dedicated subfolder for bounces wouldn't exactly hurt either). Overall, though, I do get where you're coming from, but I personally believe that if we can just iron out the "actually save stuff to the project rather than just the alias locations" then using Packages would be seen as superior when working between apple systems. But I do think that folders will always have a place in collaboration because the masses still want to argue over Mac and Windows (I refuse to call it PC because PC is actually "Personal Computer" and has nothing to do with Microsoft specifically), or Logic and every other DAW in existence, etc. resulting in differentiating technologies that don't always want to talk to each other.
Thats honestly even worse, i dont want to bounce smth double to minimize storage.
Always Folders for me. Why “hide” the files?
because when you move a project to a different computer you may lose directory information if you don't save in a package.
im having so much trouble saving my first track that i keep saving in sessions lol ive seen this video so many times
Thanks for the video.
I’m wondering, if I do a save as in a package, it creates a whole new package, correct?
If I do a save as in folders, it just saves the project file? Not all the associated assets?
My concern with packages is that I’m filling up my hard drive and backups with unnecessary gigs. I might save as over 10x on a mix, turning a song from 1gb to 10gb unnecessarily.
Is this correct or am I way off?
How did you do that thing at 1:09 seconds where Logic, Screenflow, finder and books pop up in the middle of the screen? I've seen this on a few videos and can't work out how to do it on my mac
hello everyone!i have a question, can i save user patches for DMD or any instrument in logic to my external ssd?
Even if you are sharing the projects i would suggest saving as a folder ... compress it to one zip file and send !!!!!
Could you tell me when packages became available in Logic Pro? :)
I don't like using Track Alternatives...which realistically was introduced due to Packages...
And thus , I prefer folders , as I save versions manually, and with the 100's of versions, when its time for some housekeeping. I then create a folder within named "Old (songname) Verions"
Plus for Bounces , I have a seperate folder not in the Project folder for seperate access... That way, whatever changes that may happen to the file like with Mastering software, its not referenced by logic , nor part of the project for back up.... I guess I like a folder for Projects, and Folder for mastering... Just the way my head works I guess.....
Maybe just an old school approach, but Folders give me more control...
If a package is required, well just reserve the project seperately as such..
To add, For me, Alternatives is never a guarantee top what I'm working on... Maybe due to my old skool approach.. But it doesn't make my old approach easier nor Harder.
It is a known issue that packages are not supported by network drives like Google Drive. Just wondering do folder-organized projects work on Google Drive?
How do you save a project as a folder ????? Im trying to do a SAVE AS , and it keeps just making it the single icon package ! plz help
It keeps losing my files when I save to folder. 😓
How would you change a Package into a Folder? You can't copy any file from a Package to anywhere!
Just do a save as, select “Folder” and the delete the old package
Cant you just AirDrop the whole folder from the finder window instead of doing it from LPX
Never ever used a project, for me Folder > Packages 🤷🏻♂️
unhelpful verbiosity.
why why why?
