Favorite myth is that there is anything special about any particular bore. “There is just something about those 6.5 bullets” when the creed came out, “6mm is the best” rn, before that it was 308. You can get high BC bullets in any diameter and there are cartridges that push those bullets at or above 3k. Only once you look in that context an you have a real opinion on cartridges.

Before these guys were around o recall the optics were old Redfield accu-tracs, lyman, unertl, and leatherwood type sights. In the 80's i remember the first Lightforce/Nightforce optics. Now theres $300 rifle optics that are far more capable than what was available in the 70's and 80's.
My favorite one that even a lot of experienced shooters believe is that higher scope rings exaggerate the effects of rifle cant. Even 10" high rings with 5 degrees of cant at 1000 yards have no appreciable difference from 1" high rings. There is some tiny fraction of an inch difference at 1000 yards but it's effectively a myth that pushes people to get lower scope rings than they should, sacrificing comfort for nonsense. MDT did a video on it which was nice.
any and I mean any thing can shoot long range... 50yds with a red Ryder will teach you a bunch or 100yds with a old 10-22 and iron sights its all about practice and having fun.
Any person who claimed to be a Marine who “qualified at 600 meters on irons” was lying about being a marine, or their shooting prowess, or both. I went to the rifle range MANY times while I was in the Marine Corps, 2003-2013, and the known distance ranges were 200, 300, and 500 yards. The last 2 times I went in 2011 and 2012, we were allowed to qualify with the standard issue 4x ACOG. Don’t quote me on this but, I’m fairly certain the ACOG was REQUIRED in 2012, and no longer optional. Anyone who’s talking about qualifying with iron sights AFTER 2012 is either a liar… or maybe a reservist? The reservists usually get the shit end of the stick as far as gear is concerned.
What if you took a newer shooter and tested them first. Gave them 2 hours and some factory ammo to shoot then tested them again vs 2 hours of reloading ( maybe some shooting for load development stuff) and see which one is better. I would watch that in a heart beat.
I think you guys have incidentally perpetuated another myth. A significant portion of high precision rifles are not truly 1MOA. It really requires 20+ round groups to find the cone of deflection of a barrel. Cherry picking 3 or even 5 round 1 MOA groups is easy if you ignore others as flyers. I would say 1.5 MOA is much more accurate of a statement.

Tell the wizard of oz over there that we qualified with iron sights out to 800 meters. The front sight post was wider than the target.
