  • I'm finally replacing my front driveshaft u-joints in my #jeep #wrangler#LJ (TJ #Unlimited)! I bought joints for this project some time ago, assuming they'd need to be replaced soon. Then I never got around to the actual repair! Well it's time, the front most U-Joint is making noise now, and you'll see just how bad it is when I get it out.
    I decided to replace all three joints in the front driveshaft. This includes the CV joint at the transfer case end. These can be a little tricky to get in and out so I wanted to get as much footage out there as possible of the process.
    The full video ended up way too long to release in one part, so I've split it up. I'll link the second half once It's produced.
    Thanks for watching!

    Watching your daughter helping in the shop brought back a lot of happy memories of my little girl helping me with projects. After she finished collage and grad school she married a wonderful guy who was surprised to learn his new wife not only had a tool box, but knew how to use what was in it! She now has two children who love to come over and help grand dad with projects. It is good to see you back in the shop (a real shop), working with what you have. You are showing the way it is for most of us. Thanks!

      That means a lot man. Thanks. I appreciate the comment. And thanks for watching! This shop was my grandfather's, he taught my dad how to tinker here. My dad taught me. I don't have any son's, but im hoping that my little girls have an interest. Thanks.

      What they have an interest in is you. Nurture and cherish that because you are the man they will measure all the rest by.

    Looking forward to part 2. Neat to see your daughter in the shop with you. I remember when my daughters use to help me fix the Jeep. Nowadays they prefer to just ask for the keys instead.

      Thanks man! Sometimes it's a struggle to involve them in the video process. And some things just aren't safe for them. But they're definitely in a few! They're in my Midland radio video quite a bit. :D

    I did this job once. Then decided it is far less hassle to buy a whole new driveshaft assembly for $295.00 with free shipping, and just bolt that sucker on. When you add up the cost of the 3 u-joints and the centering yoke assembly then add in the time savings and convenience, it starts to make sense. The other considerations are that many aftermarket shafts are stronger than stock, and with a new shaft assembly, all those components wear together. Just my .02

      Steven Hill that’s valid. I didn’t replace the yoke because it wasn’t worn out. I forget what the joints cost anymore but in all it was well under 100.

      @JSTR moog greasable ujoints for the front driveshaft are under $20 a pop at advance Auto. This driveshaft takes 3 of those.

    Enjoying the video! Imagining Mom later asking daughter "what is this black stuff on your bathing suit?" Daughter is like "Jeep grease Mom, I helped." Well done Papa.

    Kiddo should be wearing safety glasses considering she's right at eye level with that cardan you're banging on, and it's pretty common for tiny pieces of metal to break off the hammer or the cardan and go flying at speeds that can easily do permanent eye damage (hence the reason you are wearing eye protection).
    Also you should never hit your drive shaft with a hammer.

      thanks. this is years ago at this point though. i have a press for this sort of work now. though, why would you never hit your driveshaft with a hammer? this is a pretty common way to do unjoints without a press.

      @@SWBCrawlerdon't the driveline need to be machined, and balanced, or did someone try to get out of doing mine, by telling me this? LOL....
      My front is out right now, waiting for some attention. The u joints are incredibly bad. Worse than yours were. We did mark the position of the drive line before removing it.

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@keith9716 i have never needed to balance mine after replacing joints. you probably could for good measure. but as long as you put everything back together in the same orientation that it came out. you should be good

      @@SWBCrawler....thank you for responding so quickly. I appreciate that. And that's what I thought, too.....
      ..but what if I buy a whole new drive line for it though? Can't line it up the way it was before, if it's never been in there to begin with. I'm just trying to understand, because new is also an option for me now, at this point.

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  11 месяцев назад

      @@keith9716 a new one will be balanced when you get it. or it should be. i just got a tom woods for our jku. it comes ready to install. you only need to worry a out when you’re taking things apart to replace joints. or if you pull the slip joint apart. make sure you put it back tighter the way it came apart or it could be out of balance.

    Should use a light under the vehicle so we could see where & how the bad joint looked. More closeups on removal and replace. Overall a bad video man. Yur daughter is adorable though!

      Paul Aiello yea the one downside to recording with a GoPro is you don’t get a preview of what you’re recording. I tried to lighten up the video but it just did it work out. Live and learn. I try to do better with lighting now. Thanks fir the feedback. And thanks for watching!
