  • Eventually exterior wood doors and windows will rot. Knowing how to repair rotted wood on doors or windows can be a huge factor in the life span of the door. All we needed to repair the door was wood, paint and glue. The glue can be found on Amazon:

The tools we used that really helped speed the project were a power planer and belt sander:

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit, Variable Speed (DCS356D1)

The project was fairly simple in that the goal was to cut out the rotted section and replace it with new cedar wood which is rot resistant. To make the process easier, we ut out a rectangular section which would accommodate a rectangular section of new wood. The job takes a little patience but is certainly a DIY task if you are patient.

Great Vid! BTW, mine was installed incorrectly with the vinyl is on the inside, wood outside. The wood on the bottom frame outside is rotted in murtiple spots. I think I should replace the whole bottom frame piece. Any tips on that? Thanks.

My dream comes true! Thank you. Is there anywhere you know of to purchase that bottom piece of word for a Pella Architectural Series door? Pella discontinued the door ... our luck ... last year. Again, my thanks. An excellent tutorial!

3 months later, asking if you fixed the door yourself.
Pella discontinued ours too, it is just this part that is rotted through (the whole thing though) and we are about to do this ourselves.
Wondering if you did it and how it turned out.

HI- Is your door a Pella Pro Line? It looks the same as our door! My handyman took the door off the track & showed me a Pix of the inside bottom of the door- it was all rotted wood to the bottom! Would your procedure work in this case?

      Hi Randle,
Yes, it is a Pella ( bad design huh! - same with my Pella windows !!!) .
The outer skin is aluminum, the inside - wood.
Including that video I’ve worked on the door 2x and now have replaced ~80% of the bottom of the door. One pocket for glide mechanism (w/ wheel) became unstable due to the rot. So I replaced the wood with cedar ( rot resistant ) and new spot for the glide. Works like new. ( I would replace the entire bottom with 2 new square glide pockets for the wheel mechanisms if I had to do it all over again )
If you are paying a handyman, you have to balance that with cost of new door and install$.
For me, It’s just my time. ( 2-3 hrs?? )
      Hope that helps !

Hi David- I went to Home Depot to order the pocket for glide mechanism, they had no idea what to sell me. I go the glue from AMZ & the cedar from home depot. Can you please tell where to get the "pocket for glide mechanism" or a part #??? Thank you. I have2 rotted pella doors. Will I need to buy 4 of the pocket for glide mechanism? Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!

      Another Home Depot today.
I can’t seem to upload a pic here, but don’t want to take the door apart & not have the correct wheel casing. Can I get a photo to you?

Do they sell the trimming that goes on the glass separately? if so, what is its actual name?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  7 месяцев назад +2

Sorry. Not real sure. The inside of our door has wood against the glass. Exterior is vinyl wrapped wood. Not sure the company sells either but you could try to contact them. I just used cedar from big box home store and cut it to size.
      Thx for watching.

Do U have a video for the wood under the door?
My mom's is rotten... not the door itself, but under the plastic were U step 2 get in & out (the actual frame).
I have been looking for a video that shows how 2 fix it. I don't even know what type of wood (U mentioned cedar?) or what I would be looking for (2x4... 4x4?) or if I need to coat it with epoxy before I drop it in place.
The sliding glass doors them selves R good still run on the tracks easily. I don't believe that she has 2 buy a whole new sliding patio door set +$1000+ just fix the bottom frame 🤷‍♀️.
Any help would be appreciated thx

      Hey Leslie…,
You are on the right track. If it is wood, it can be cut out and replaced. If it’s plastic or metal or a substance like that attached to wood, you’d have to see if you can separate it from the wood and replace the rotted wood.
The bottom of the sliding door has two metal (?) wheels that run on a metal or hard plastic track.
It might be possible to cut the entire threshold out and add in something new or make something of multiple pieces ( a new copy of what you remove) .
Maybe search for replacing “sliding door track “ or “threshold track” …
I’m guessing you’ll need a wood base and some metal rail for the wheels to ride on. Any exterior clear coat could be applied yearly to preserve the wood.
      Or epoxy…
You may need a table saw to cut a custom piece. Cedar is a good wood. Or green treat / pressure treated wood to prevent rot. A2x4 would probably be thick enough.
It may not be a “typical” repair - but seems like there must be a solution. Maybe you are the one to solve it!
      Hope that helps!

$1000? They want $8000 for us to replace it.
Only thing wrong is the bottom of the sliding glass door, fully rotten. The whole piece of bottom wood. Guessing same as you.
We're thinking on the problem at the moment. Figure just get the right size and shove it in there carefully like this video with lots of glue. Sand down the extra epoxy/glue/whatever that spills out. Then have to cut holes in bottom for the wheels. (so measure that before completely gutting the bottom.
Did you find a decent solution?

      Hey Mariela…,
Including the oscillating multitool, maybe $100-150 . You probably get by w/ fewer tools and spend more time but either way, small price to pay considering a new door is $1000-3000…
      Thx for watching.
