I don't understand why they aren't charged with breaking and entering as well as trespassing along with damaging the home. This should be a felony.

That's what I've been saying! It's criminal, not civil. They should be able to call the police and have them arrested for trespassing and breaking & entering, and for all the damage done!
Luckily a lot of states are changing these laws to protect the homeowners...

I live in Nevada. Those laws went into effect on January 1st 2017. But, that doesn't get the squatters out. You still have to go through an eviction process. Most of them have fake lease/rental agreements. It's up to the home owner to prove in court. That they own the property and never rented/leased it to the squatters. As well as prove that they did not give any property management company the right to lease/rent the house. And prove that the names on the lease, are not any real property management company. That had the right to lease/rent the property. All this falls on the home owner. Don't forget the home owner has to pay all legal and court cost as well. At least it was. Until a new law went into affect. Now in Nevada, squatting is no longer a civil matter. It's a crime. Cops go in and arrest the squatters right away.

I agree with the reporters at the end. These people are not LEGAL tenants. I don't understand why tenant's rights are getting involved unless this also pertains to those who are legally in a place. In which case, yes I can see why they're joining in.
I almost found out what it would be like to lose a home that my family legally owns. My husband and I almost lost ours when I found out he hadn't kept up with our property taxes (this home is mortgage free but the property taxes run $4000-$6000 per year (CAD)). I found a letter from our city that said pay up or leave within 8 months. Luckily my husband was able to (using an inheritance he was hoping to hold onto for his declining years which aren't far away). This house is his family home and he's lived here since 1965 (his parents were older people so him moving out created challenges when he finished school). Now some places may not give so much time to catch up on property taxes so please don't think that time we had to catch up is standard everywhere.
If you own a home and can afford to, get TITLE insurance. This helps keep people from selling your home out from under you especially if your home is still mortgaged (obviously it won't work in situations with loan companies or banks if you get behind in payments). My husband and I have home owner insurance that has a title clause. There are people who are literally looking at banks to see who owns a mortgage and somehow making it seem that the actual owner somehow had a foreclosure and selling it to other people while they still live there! Actually saw a report in Florida that some of the Canadian snowbird residences were actually homes that ended up like that and the original owner fighting to get their home back.

The so called legal system and it’s courts are TOTALLY ASS BACKWARDS, UNFAIR, INSUFFICIENT AND INEFFECTIVE when it comes to illegal trespassing a.k.a squatting. Home owners across the country need to get together and DEMAND that these judges, prosecutors, and attorneys be held accountable for their actions and decisions against homeowners then they need to be removed from their positions.

Why tf would you have to register with the government to go on vacation or be out of town from your own damn house? No, change the laws. These aren't renters debating with landlords. These are thieves who are trespassing and vandalizing people's homes. Thank god this woman was able to get an order of protection and get them out.

Are you fucking kidding me? This wasn't a case of bums moving into an empty house. These were squatters who moved into someone's home when they weren't there. How is this not illegal? No homeowner is safe. You go to the store, someone breaks into your home and stays there and the home owner is out of luck? This is ludicrous.
