AMD vs OER frame rails what’s the difference besides price…….Nothing?

- Had the opportunity to do some side by side comparison of rear frame rails for 1969 1968 Firebird and Camaro trying to identify the difference in quality, material, shape and surprisingly the results were very interesting.

I've had mixed results with both AMD and OER sheet metal. Some of the issues were minor. Others required extensive rework as in they weren't even close. The bottom line is don't expect the repo parts to fit like factory. If they do, then consider yourself lucky.
I have had good and bad with all brands. What is available today is. Much improved over what was out there 20 years ago.
I think you answered your own question. It’s called factor seconds or QC rejects your getting at a reduced cost. A simple reinforcement plate installed incorrectly could be separated out as a factory reject and sold to vendors at a reduced price. Very common practice across many manufacturers who produce consumer goods IMO.
I really don’t think there is many companies producing these parts I think like you said it comes to QC and then sort from there
@@VinylVillageGarage there is a stigma attached to the term factory seconds and rightfully so, most people won’t roll that dice if a company lists the part as a factory second even if it’s much cheaper. Even AMD panels aren’t perfect. I current have an AMD truck floor that I’m going to have to break loose and adjust the brackets at the tail panel because they were spot welded on crooked
@@greasemonkey1880 yup been there too AMD trunk floor fuel tank support 1/4” to far back had to remove and reinstall in the correct place. I have had good and bad from all brands. But typically less issues with AMD
@@VinylVillageGarage I’m getting ready to mount a 68 Camaro on a frame jig for a winter project and was able to go with AMD for everything without too much on back order. Man the cost of stuff these days though 😬
Awesome review. Its nice to see what diffrent brands look like next to each other and your helping us all potentially save a few bucks.
I just had to share with everyone. l just wish I knew why they use the same sticker and appear almost identical but charge twice as much. I will continue my observation and comparing as I keep rebuilding and I will share the results.
Can you explain your Rear frame rail Jig assembly some, is it for final fitment check before you tack weld rails on body for their width/F/R align of final set?
It almost looks like you set the rails on it, then set the car body on The rails , then tack things..
I use it for all the above basically. It was designed to place new rails on then place trunk floor on then it can also be used to install it back onto the car body. Or say the trunk floor is still good in the car body do the same place rails on the jig and put up into place then weld them in.

That is a very good invention-tool idea for the rail placement.
I viewed a handful of bodywork vids of yours, the main importance is proper align & placement.
It's definitely a major undertaking to replace the floor pans then instal the new rails and make it all fit align properly.
Are there rear pans with rails already welded in, or is it modular piece together for the back half section?

There was at one time a company that sold them assembled rear rails, trunk pan and inner tail panel. I like to buy them in pieces. It’s a bit cheaper and I also know that the insides are painted

You are welcome. I can’t figure It out entirely, I had issues with bad fitment of the driver side frame on the Transmaroado it was OER brand. Probably a good thing I wasn’t doing videos then because I would have had to change the rating of the video to over 18 because of all the “nice” words i had to Share. My guess is at this point it’s just a crapshoot what kind of quality you get. I was just amazed this time around both where basically identical. I am always good with saving money of course.
did you order the OER rails from Classic industries?
I ordered them from Jegs. It took nearly 3
Months to get them. Good news is I have a pair in stock for the next time.
Is the frame rail jig still around? I have a 67’ Camaro I’m about to start on.
Unfortunately no. It went on a one way trip to Maryland and then the guy ghosted me.

I don't usually have any issues with AMD. I suspect they do a better job of checking the quality.
I think so too, this time idk. Maybe they made more good ones then normal and AMD passed on them. I know had issues in the past with oer frame rails and 1/4 skins not fitting and not as clean of body lines. I will still lean toward buying AMD.
I totally agree with you my brother I don't think it's nice to charge people more money for something that is out there exactly the same quality
It’s a bit shady if that is what is really happening, I don’t know if I can prove 100% they are the same but I don’t have much saying that they are in fact different.
Your theory is true with what they do with electronics. Say they make batteries and Sony wants 20k but will only buy the top 10% with in sonys specs. They might have to make 80k bats to fill that 20k order. the rest get sold off to other companies by a quality teardrop system.
Very interesting, so if they do it with batteries then it’s plausible with panels. So there is a chance that there might be a difference in quality if that where to be true. Thanks for sharing
Cost difference could be in coating and metal grade/quality.
That’s a possibility too, it’s just odd the identification tag I would think it should be changed to match metal grade so is not to mix up the products.
I'm going to need frame rails along with a full trunk for my 68. What would you charge me if I shipped you a trunk and had you mount the rails for me? I'm next door in Illinois
If you paid for the shipping and sent me a spool of wire for the welder I would do it for you or if you wanted to hang out for a day we could knock it out in a couple hours.
AMD owns their tooling for their parts where as OER owns nothing they farm it out to a Chinese company to make their parts .
I do believe AMD is better product in most side by side cases especially rear 1/4
Panels and wheel wells. I am just not convinced that all the panels aren’t stamped at the same place still. I have had OER brand rear frame rails that I wasn’t happy with so I know OER is the luck of the dice thing because the last
Set of oer rails where identical to AMD including the identification sticker, on just this set so far. So I can only conclude they came from the same place. AMD quality stays the same oer fluctuates. So I still prefer AMD brand.

IDK too much about all this political stuff going on between Taiwan and China but if you need panels, you may not want to wait too long IMO
You do bring up a very good point. I have a huge need for several more big panels
