  • In this video I install a 1 5/8 chromoly roll cage in the 1969 Pontiac Firebird. I show some tips and tricks when bending, notching and welding up mild steel and Chromoly 4130 roll cages. Once the main part of the cage is complete I then install Detroit Speed subframe connectors for a 1st gen F-body Camaro or Firebird. I then wrap up the video on a walk around of all the work and the future plans for this build series.

    Nice! Should handle nicely and not become a flexi flyer in a year or two. Enjoy seeing a craftsman and showing these old cars the love they deserve and not just another butcher flipping them for a buck. 😎🤟

    When TIG welding, try and hold the filler wire in the gas cloud when done. It can get impurities just like the weld puddle can.

      You are right I did it in this video most of the time, might not look like it since everything is 6-8 time faster in timelapse it looks like I pull it out right away. I do pull it out sooner then the cup as there is less hat in the filler. Thanks for the comment.

    Man I love this channel. You’re a great instructor. Just did a DSE rollbar and subframe connectors in a Camaro last month. Wish I saw this video. It was a lot of work but total satisfaction. I ended up not welding the front of the subframe connectors to the speedtech subframe. I ran 3 big bolts through the plug weld holes. Just in case for ease of removal. Sorry for the long comment. Your channel is AA++++

      Thank you very much. Yes the custom stuff and all the components of these kits are challenging but I think the best stuff to put in t a first gen F body. Glad you got your already behind you. That was good thinking on the bolts I have one in the shop that is installed wrong which was done at a different shop I wish they bolted in. I am hoping i really never have to remove this one but just in case it just will be a little extra work.

    When I got my 69 Firebird (in 69), I found the seat was to close to the steering wheel. I made extensions for the seat rails about 1 12"

    Looks great man! I've been thinking about adding a simple roll cage to my 74 Challenger for a little bit of added security. This gives me some great ideas! Would you say the back seats are still accessible for kids to use?

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks a lot, I would consider the back seat unusable as bars would be right next to anyone's head for the most part. Could someone get back there, yes but I don't think its a good idea for safety.

      @@carthageclassiccars interesting... well I'll keep an eye on your progress to see how it turns out. I'd really like a roll cage, but I want the back seat for my kids.

      Understood! I believe that as you get closer to completion, the project begins to take on a personality and will let you know what it needs. Do you ever get into customizing the body, such as flaring fender and quarter openings, frenching in rear spoilers or adding hood scoops?

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Six4691 Yes I do, right now building a custom "flat out" style spoiler on a 69 camaro. I shave bumpers all the time and have built many hood scoops mostly cowl hoods. I might do some of that with this car. The problem with me filming the custom stuff its a lot of trial and error so it doesn't translate well on videos like this. But check out my facebook page as I try and post more stuff then just these videos. If i do custom stuff this is the car I will try and film it
