Macro Photography | Putting it all into practice on location

- In this video I build on my last macro photography video (My 8 Essential Macro Photography Techniques) by putting those macro techniques into practice out on location. Whenever I'm out I'm always looking for small details in nature and it's one part of photography that never lets me down. So often I go out to photograph the bigger landscape and it's the small macro subjects that save the day. Again I stayed very close to home, only venturing as far as the next village to a small nature reserve. Here there are lots of different habitats including a species-rich grassland, woodland and two small ponds. I got four new beautiful macro images for my portfolio in total, which is a really good morning for most serious photographers.

Absolutely fantastic and brilliant tips
Glad it was helpful Lee
Your buttercup photo was stunning and thanks for all the helpful information.
It's good to help Kathryn
How lovely such pretty colors ❤️
Weren't they just. Pitty about the sound 😂
A gallery of wonderful images Simon. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Robin and taking the time to leave a comment.
Beautiful images. The grass flower at 7:27 is stunning and definitely one I would put on my wall. Your descriptions of how you consider composition and make use of selective focus and shallow depth of field are particularly insightful and very helpful for beginners like me.
Thanks Rodney, I was really pleased with how that one turned out. You clearly have a similar eye to me in what pleases you.
Beautiful and inspiring as usual.
Fantastic as always Simon, you really do create beautiful images from such simple elements! Beautiful photos 👍☺️
Thanks David for dropping by and commenting again so favourably. It's always good to see you here.
Excellent. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such beautiful images. Thank you for sharing your thought processes as you’re photographing them.
My pleasure Nichola!
Just getting into macro and loving your videos.
Simon you are nature’s ambassador. Stunning images. Thanks.
Now they are big boots to fill indeed!
Stunning work once again Simon.
Thank you so much
In The Early Morning Light. Well done.
Many thanks!
Wonderful work as always Simon. The second image in particular is an absolute delight. As is normal for you your calm, thoughtful and knowledgeable presentation is a tonic. Delighted that your subscriber numbers are building which is no surprise to me as this is one of my favourite channels where I look forward to each new edition. Thanks Simon.
Awe that's really very kind of you Martin. It's always a pleasure to see you here and it means a lot to have your support.
Thank you Simon, you got some beautiful images! Just rang the bell!
Ding dong Lisa, thank you sooooo much :-)
Stunning images. Well done
Thank you so much 😀
Always a pleasure seeing your work/techniques and final images, I find the way you explain each shot taken easy to follow and understand.
Thanks for the videos.
📸👍🏼😎
Thanks for saying so Peter.
Beautiful photos and beautiful birds song.
Thanks.
You gotta love the birds Roger! They's will be silenced in the coming weeks sadly, so make the most of it.
Beautiful captures, thank u for taking us along!
Thank you Marilyn
Hey Simon, You are soooo in your element when it comes to this macro and wildlife. I must give them a proper go one time, as the images... are Art! They are actually lovely, and i love the way you presented them all together at the end. Print them, print them, print them! Some lovely light across the grasses first thing in the morning too. Lovely!
Kind regards, all the way from an Autumnal NZ!
Ewan
Hey buddy, I would print them but I need your marketing skills as you know! I do love this type of work as I feel very comfortable with it. I like poking my lens around and finding stuff I could never see with my naked eye!
Bizarrely now having missed spring, I feel ready for autumn!
Lovely images
Many many thanks for watching
Just recently found your channel and being from Lancashire as well it's nice to see some local photography
Welcome aboard Matt and nice to hear from a local too! thanks
I’ve learned so much watching your videos, especially these last two. I’ve been putting your instructions into practice and I’m already seeing a drastic improvement in my macro photography. Thank you!
That's really great to hear Jim
great video again Simon , great info and images ,thank you , take care and stay safe
As always Mick, thank you again for being here. You must be one of the longest members of this community and I really appreciate every time you take the time write and show your support.
Good macro shots. I love the one with the yellow flower. Lovely colour contrast.
Yes, contrast is important a lot of the time, especially in macro work. thank you
Another superb informative video Simon. thanks and well done.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave. I enjoyed making this series.
Such beautiful photos
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks for another wonderful video Simon....as always full of interest. Your image of the creeping buttercup is quite stunning...I looked at it again and again and just thought WOW !
Thanks for looking and looking again Mike. It's hard work keeping people engaged to the end in most cases.
Another great video Simon. Your results are truly inspiring. Thank you
You are very kind Shaun, thank you.
So inspiring. Thank you Simon :)
Many many thanks for watching
So good to see the advice being put into practice, superb video
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew
Beautiful images Simon !
Glad you like them Peter, thanks
Beautiful work. Just lovely. The amount of information you share about the surrounding nature really adds to the video. Thank you 👍
I'm lucky to have built this knowledge through my natural love for the outdoors. It's great to be able to share it.
We’ve seen so many videos about macro photography in the last 2 months (understandably) but these images, for me, are the most inspiring. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful Roger. I can only suggest that perhaps a few decades of practice have served me well?
Thank you for another excellent and inspiring video.
You are so welcome Chris
Beautiful images and great tips!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Obrigado Simon! Lindas imagens, e músicas de fundo ao som de piano inspiradoras. Brasil.
Que bom que você gostou da música Marcos
Thumbs up. Love the patient manner in which you explain your process, your composition, the choice of aperture, focus stack, etc. and then demonstrate the outcome of that considered process. Kudos for lugging the Mighty Benbo out and about. Not sure I'll ever be doing that again, but never say...
Shame that the Bell thing is so important to your channel. I've got enough pavlovian notifications and tracking in my life. Instead I prefer to see what's new in my 'subscriptions' and view them when it suits (coffee time, generally!). Sorry to let you down on that front, Simon, but it is for good reason, on my part.
Thanks for watching and for finding the time to write Barry. It’s not the bell that’s important if everyone is like you. It’s more for those who don’t browse through their sub feed. If the don’t look they may miss the film altogether. It’s the view time that makes the difference to RUclips. More views means there’s more chance of it appearing in the recommenced video feed!
Really enjoyed that Simon, nice relaxed, mellow and insightful
Glad you enjoyed it George
Thank you Simon, great job continuing in the series. Congrats on your upcoming milestone of 10K.
Thanks Steve, yes I'm so close and it's been a long road getting here.
Lovely images again. I am learning more every time I watch you.
Great to hear Tony
Beautiful set of images Simon.
Glad you like them Peter.
Really enjoying your videos. Appreciate the efforts and learning!
Really appreciate your comment, thank you.
I so enjoy your videos. You have a way of teaching that also speaks of the reverence you have of your natural subject matter. Quite lovely and relaxing to watch and learn a thing or two while I'm at it. Well done!
Awe thanks Helen...that's very kind of you.
A maze zing! You have me watching the grasses and verges more than I ever have Simon. Love it and thank you so much for sharing your morning.
Thanks Steve. You'll know the names of all the grass next like sad old me :-D
Lovely images. I love watching your films, as someone who struggles with depth of field when I shoot macro, I find your descriptions on how to take these images invaluable.
Glad it helps you Sherry, thanks for watching.
Beautiful images!
Many thanks!
Good video, well explained and beautifully crafted shots.
Thank you very much William
Great video Simon, amazing images. It's such a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank You for great content.
Many thanks Peter. Thanks for watching.
Lovely video Simon, I adored the buttercup image; one I have tried and only got right occasionally. Stay well, stay safe and thanks as always, Andy
They are hard Andy. I was trying to shoot another group before that one and failed miserably.
Loved the video Simon
Thanks as always Jim
Thank you for taking the effort to make your videos. This like many others is a respite in a hectic time, and soothes the soul. Beautiful images.
You're very welcome and thank you for watching.
Very good shots. This how to photograph macro! Thanks for sharing. My photography is about macro and film photography!
Thanks for watching Luis and good luck with your channel
Just superb Simon, each image is stunning but even better presented as a set at the end.
They did make a nice collection didn't they! Thank you for sticking with it until the end too. Many hit the next button all too quickly!
Well worth watching. I learned more and got to see some beautiful images as well. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it Jim
Great job
Thank you
Simon - congrats on another great video! Have really enjoyed the last few tutorials on macro (and nature!) - I have always felt inspired through them to get out into the garden and nearby fields / walks - with some rewarding results. Thank you - keep up the excellent work. Look forward to the next one. David
That's really great to hear David. It's nice to know my efforts don't go wasted.
Brilliant and a pleasure to watch again simon , i personally take something away from every video . Look forward to the next one 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Ian...not so sure about this next one. I fear I waffle too much?
Just started this genre , your videos are inspirational, great work .thank you for sharing
Many many thanks for watching
Happy to find your channel. That second image with all that light is stellar. They are all great of course. Thanks for all your work.
Glad you liked the video and thanks for the feedback.
Have really enjoyed this series, thank you!
Thanks for watching Tim and taking the time to leave a comment.
WoW, really nice photo's
Many thanks
Hey Simon
Realy good and wounderful images. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about macro photography.
Have a nice day :-)
Thanks, you too! Cheers for watching!
Thanks Simon, I have just discovered your channel and found this very helpful having just dipped my toe into Macro photography. You make the ordinary extraordinary and I found this very inspiring. Needless to say I have now subscribed to your channel and will be catching up on some of your other videos.
Thank you so much for the subscription and for watching Mike. The growth of the channel depends on you and every little helps, Simon
A thumbs up from me as usual Simon. Your films and images have been welcome calming moments of escapism during lockdown. All the very best Mike.
Thanks Mike. It's been a successful series this.
Very detailed process descriptions to accompany the images.
Hope it was useful Michael
Fantastic work as usual. Thanks for sharing
Cheers for saying so Tony. Your thumbnail always terrifies me!
@@SimonBoothPhotography why does my thumbnail terrify you?
Great Tips, Simon! I am learning so much. I especially like the 2nd photo and how you used the far off backlight to your advantage...really well done!
That image seems like a distant memory now. Thanks for checking out the old videos. It does make a difference to the channel.
Beautiful shots buddy and so well talked through!
Cheers Tom. it was a good morning that one!
Hi Simon.. always animated when shooting macro.. it’s clearly a passion of yours and comes across that way on film. I’m enjoying this series of films and as I mentioned before, I’m totally up for having a go.. I feel it. Thanks 😊
It's good Ian that you are embracing macro. In fact, there's not a lot photographically that you don't embrace with arms wide open. A true ambassador!
I've watched a few videos now, following Thomas Heaton's comments in his latest video. Wow, so informative and helping me to understand some of the techniques I was shown during a recent macro photography course I participated on. The images are beautiful and you make it feel so simple but not easy. Thanks and I look forward to seeing more videos. Regards, Nick
Thanks for watching Nick and I'm glad that you found the films useful. Macro gets easier with practice, like everything!
Really like ur photos 👍👍👍
Thanks again Sherine
beautiful photos Simon and the bird's song wonderful thank you from trev in Sussex
Thanks Trevor. I appreciate your observation.
Beautiful work as always Simon
Thanks for swinging by Jamie. Good to hear form you again.
Your macro works are so beautyful Simon! ❤ Also I love your background music choices!🎼 Keep my fingers crossed for the 10k channel subscribers and the next, the next, the next! 👍👍👍😊
Thanks so much for that. It will be nice to finally cross the line! Interesting that you pick up on the music. I just responded to a comment saying quite the opposite. I for one like the music as it helps me to absorb the image, so it will be staying for now.
Love tutorial and thank you for taking me on the walk. This video just made me a new subscriber to your channel.
Thank you so much for the subscription and for watching. The growth of the channel depends on you, Simon
Thanks again, Simon. I always take something away from your films 😊
I am very grateful of your support Stephen. You are very generous.
I was blown away with how you consider composition and the results are stunning! I am a beginner in macro photography and you surely provided loads of inspiration in this video! Thanks !
Thanks Vivian. I'm glad it proved useful for you.
Little bits of nature that we walk past and not notice, it’s all there ten foot high if we just observe! Thanks for the nudge Simon!
In times like these, your message is important Neil
Snap, just been out to the field next to our house. Bought a Takumar macro lens. Beautiful quality. Thanks for that Simon, much appreciated.
Good choice Steve. Pentax do have some good glass.
Serendipity. Your beautiful atmospheric images compliment your style of presentation and informative narrative perfectly. The quality of all of these certainly shine through in this video - thank you.
Wow, thank you Mark. That's such a nice comment. I really appreciate that!
A cracking video as always mate. My favourite image is the 2nd (at 07:20).... just beautiful! Great to see that 10k subs is just around the corner. Well deserved!
Thanks Julian, yes that 10k seems to have taken an age, especially between 8k and 9k! I think you’re on the money with your preferred image as it was mine too! One of those nuggets you can’t plan for! Cheers for that.
Yes planning is needed sometimes but planning can also build up you expectations leading to disappointment recently I have just been going out what ever the weather and enjoying the conditions and looking for other things to shot it’s just great to be out enjoy
Great video best wishes pat
It's the best way to maximise your opportunities!
Nice.....
Thank you! Cheers!
i love this content !!! 🙂🙂
Thank you so much.
I recently discovered your channel (thanks to Thomas Heaton) and really love your work. Every video is showing me new possibilities. I haven't even come close to seeing them all!
Thanks Frank
I love your content, Simon, it's lovely to watch and learn. That Buttercup is beautiful, reminded me of when I was a child, before we moved to Australia, they were always my favourite.
Gosh, you're watching from Oz! Amazing!
Did you put them under your chin to see if you liked butter?
Kerry Williams, exactly the same happen to me when I saw the picture of Buttercup. When I was a child these flowers were my favoured to observe near the marshy part of a local brook. I too am in Australia now.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Certainly did, Simon, loved that glow 🙂
@@janfrosty3392 glad I'm not the only one 🙂
@@justkerry173 Who doesn't like butter anyway!
Hi Simon, Yet another great vlog. I always thoroughly enjoy your work and find it very inspirational. Notifications or not, I always watch your channel anyway.
Well that's all that matters Mike! Cheers for your continued support.
Some glorious images thanks Simon. What’s nice about the micro stuff is it’s so accessible: no flights to Iceland, just a meadow and some light :)
I know! Why is it we have this desperate urge to follow everyone else. I do fancy New Zealand though :-)
magic stuff, think i'll dig out my 36 year old Benbo tripod from the attic, such a great tripod if a bit heavy, another super vid, the focus stack explanation and final result was super, thanks, proves the point again you don't have to trudge far to get great shots, nought wrong wi ma bell Simon....
Awe cheers Jamie for that. You will be interested to know that I have parked the Benbo again. It's like lugging a bus around with me!
@@SimonBoothPhotography i completely understand and concur, oh' to be young and strong again,, i used to lug mine everywhere without a thought to the weight, the carbon fibre youth of today have it so much easier...
Simon with seeming ease you can capture beautifull images
I don't know about ease Tom but thanks. I struggle just like the rest. Mindset is everything i find!
Love love the third and fourth shots. It definitely makes for a lovely 4 photo to hang on your wall. I discovered your channel from Thomas Heaton and he said you nail your shots every time and boy was he right.
Don’t believe a word of it. I have bad days too 😁
@@SimonBoothPhotography i hear you there
I've always been impressed with your knowledge of flora and fauna in your videos. I've been curious if you had some background in that or if you research as you prepare for your videos.
Hi Phillip, I’m an ecologist by profession and have been keen on the natural world from a very young age. All of the subject matter I find on the videos is unplanned, so I can’t research beforehand. As yet, I haven’t come across anything that has stumped me on the day!
These images are excellent. Really enjoyed these, youve motivated me to get back out with the camera and possibly even read up more on composition again from Michael Freeman.
Now I'm really confused? Michael/Tom?
@@SimonBoothPhotography Apologies I'm not very clear, Michael freeman has several excellent books, one on composition.
Good stuff! It occurred to me an alternate approach should the focus stack fail would be to blend the background of an f/4 frame into the f/16 shot.
That could work too!
What stunning images. Off to a country park with two friends, just after six am . Hoping to find wild orchids. If not willl try to find some shots similar to yours.Taking your top tips and attempting to apply them. Tripod? Or Hand held? I must make up my mind!
Best of luck Laura and I hope you found your orchids. i found some this week and show the results on my new video. I think they were a bit average though!
Great video Simon. Always enjoy your narrative alongside the photo. Have you created a book before? I would imagine that the fantastic imagery combined with a snippet of text from your extensive knowledge would be a winner.
Hi Mike, I have considered a book and even more so recently, but nothing produced as yet. I thought of doing one titled "In Praise of Plants" but whilst I had considered it from a photographic perspective, I hadn't considered the ecological angle. It's good idea!
@@SimonBoothPhotography I'm sure you would create a well thought out book. Let's see what the future brings!
Lovely vid Simon, just curious about your aperture for the final image? Im assuming you used the 120mm at f4?
It was f4 Tom, thanks for your engagement :-)
I know what you mean with that tripod I have the exact one and when you dont use it for a while its a good tripod one of the best I have used.
Absolutely, but I'm afraid to admit mine's been banished to the cupboard again!
Just go and capture what ever you like
Absolutely Pat, I couldn't agree more!
