    This latest film was made during the Covid-19 outbreak, during the period of lockdown. However, I am fortunate during these times in that I have full and exclusive access to private farmland that directly adjoins my home and therefore, all guidelines were followed during the making of this film. Now, regardless of my personal land privileges, all the images featured could easily be attained during any one hour walk whilst out exercising in the countryside close to home and without the need for lots of equipment, including a tripod. A tripod was used to film this video, but only for that purpose and no other. Sit back and enjoy the wonderful world of macro photography, where images are literally everywhere, if you just slow down look closely.

    Just 'discovered' you and boy am I impressed! I don't have a macro lens or extension tubes (I've only got one lens!) but I am itching to try this out as your images are gorgeous and so simple! maybe when I get my next pay and I don't have to buy anything 'essential' I can treat myself and get out and experiment. what would you recommend a Yorkshire lass living in Scotland (don't hate me too much!) who uses a Fuji XT2 with my 18-55 lens? Great work and I love your explanations of the plants. I'll be overloading on your videos on my weekend off!

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  4 года назад +1

      Hi Gill. The XT2 has an APS-C sensor, so smaller than full frame and at the longer end of your focal range you are at about 88mm when compared to full frame. This is good news because you can perhaps source a set of extension tubes for your camera to allow you to focus more closely and achieve the results I am getting with a dedicated macro. I hope this helps and by all means, do feel free to overload yourself on my videos and be sure to Join me this Sunday at 9am for my latest film. I will look out for you.

    Hi Simon, for low work close to the ground you might want to check out the platypod platform. It’s a metal base where you attach a head and you can shoot with the stability required. I think it is better than a bean bag. I have a small one but there is an option for larger cameras too.

    • @SimonBoothPhotography

    Super stuff as always Simon. I'm increasingly of the opinion that due to this current awful mess many of us will look at what we shoot and how we do it and learn and great deal about photography and ourselves. I'm actually taking time to look at various techniques, facilities on my camera and even doing controlled tests on depth of field and where best to focus for a given scene. In some cases it's basic stuff that is worth revisiting. Stay safe everyone.

    Lovely work Simon, but call the continuity police! No rucksack, rucksack? Love the birdsong over the first image, we have noticed the much reduced traffic here in the city is allowing us to hear more than the scavenging gulls. Not seen on our daily exercise but an otter has been spotted in the river no more than 500m from our front door, under the road bridge between Homebase and Sainsburys. Must join your macro workshop when we are allowed, not a technique I have ever really got to grips with. Stay sane and stay safe!

      Hi John, I was just making the point that we don't need them for certain subjects, given that many vloggers seem to have had virtual rotten eggs thrown at them for still using them. I 'm pretty sure it's the idea of photographers lingering, when we should be head down, getting the daily steps in and then going back home. I'm lucky to have private land on my doorstep literally, so I will probably be using mine next time.

    All I shot in the last 6 weeks was in own garden:
    - documentary of small plants I never shot
    - some remarkable abstracts
    - some birds on ground/ at bird bath in ultra low perspective
    - some insects feeding at spring flowers
    Great output I never shot in previous times.

    A very pleasant and informative video as always Simon. I have to say that I wouldn't have worried about taking a tripod in that situation. From what I saw in the video you are observing the social distancing criteria and the addition of a tripod would not have made any difference. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm assuming that your reluctance to take a tripod is a result of the level of criticism that is being directed towards vloggers by certain elements of the community. Whilst appreciating the need for the measures we are taking I find it very disappointing that in some cases the guidelines issued are being taken far too literally by some.
    Anyway, as I've said, very nice video and I really admire your ability to 'see' not only an interesting subject amongst the mundane but also to capture it in such an artistic way.
    Take care.

    • @robertlawrence7958
      @robertlawrence7958 4 года назад +1

      Hello Steve, to be honest I would have taken a tripod. I too am fortunate in living in a rural area. When I go outside I can easily avoid contact with any people simply because there is rarely anyone else around. If I do see anyone there is so much space that maintaining a distance from them is very easy indeed. This virus is spread via contact and as such the measures we are taking are intended to prevent that happening. We have been advised to avoid contact and to refrain from putting ourselves at risk of contact. We cannot, or should not, just take this advice literally without using our own intelligence to understand what we are doing and what the consequences of our actions are. If Simon had gone into those fields and seen a whole bunch of people doing the same thing I'm certain he would have adapted his plans accordingly. I can walk along a lane from my house and get to a badger sett that I have been photographing on for a number of years. In that time I have never met anyone at that sett. Logic tells me that there is zero risk to myself or others if I were to go there and spend several hours on my own, as I have on hundreds of similar occasions, with whatever equipment I choose to take. In this video it appears that Simon had direct access to the field through his own garden and therefore I would say that he also considered that his actions posed no problem.
      Quite a lot of my photography involves travelling away from my home, sometimes a long way, sometimes not so far. I have stopped this as advised. I restrict my shopping trip, use protective gloves and respect the required distances from others whenever I have to go to public places. But what I will not do is blindly apply these measures to aspects of my life which I have risk assessed and have concluded will not have an adverse effect on my fellow beings or myself. If circumstances change I will re-evaluate.
      I hope I have been able to put over my point without turning it into a rant as that is not my intention. Unfortunately I am no academic.
      Best wishes and stay safe. Robert

    • @stevesvids
      @stevesvids 4 года назад +1

      @@robertlawrence7958 no Rant at all my friend... and eloquently written. I myself adopt similar measures and have recently started taking my camera out with me again on my daily dog walking exercise routines. I'm able to avoid heavily used areas and I link up countryside footpaths to make as interesting a walk as I can within reasonable range of home. I feel guilty when stopping for a moment to capture an image... although I'm aware most of us cannot exercise continually without those brief rest moments. I only take my camera with the one lens slung over my shoulder on its strap as my primary mission is my walk..... the photography element is coincidental and stops my mind wondering into negative territory... a problem of mine.
      Take care.... and best wishes through these tricky times... Regards... Steve.

      Totally agree, the chances of catching any virus in that field I would think are zero, but saying that my brother was out jogging in a country lane and stopped to sit on a bench for a drink and rest and was moved on by a passing Avon & Somerset police patrol, there was no one around and he never came across another person except for the random police patrol...
