In this film I am back at Dunwich Wood in Suffolk looking for subjects to photograph during the autumn season. The film starts off as a bit of a wildlife and nature walk as I discuss and find some useful things to look for when out with the camera. After a little while I find my first subject, which is then swiftly followed by a second and then a third and on reflection, I am very pleased with the resulting photographs. All of them are beautiful intimate scenes and each to me would be worthy of a place on my wall! All in all, it was a very enjoyable morning with lots to see and do and not a minute was wasted enjoying what nature has to offer.

Loved the pine cones
Woo what a video…. Your eye for detail effortless narration and ability to find images all makes your videos very natural and appealing. I think of me, you are the best reader of the forest and I was feeling as if I am there and assimilating the environment. Love all the images.

Just had to stop the film, as you call it, to comment on your use of your macro lens. I have never used my tripod for macro photography, but this is so inspirational. Mostly, I use my macro lens for flowers and butterflies and bees and spiders.... who would have thought that a little dip in the forest floor could have the potential for magic? So beautiful, Simon. Hi Jann...never used a tripod for macro!! I think I'm the opposite and never used a macro without a tripod! I'm pretty sure I would miss focus that critical spot if I were to risk it! Thank you Jann for commenting on here!

I am drawn in to your narratives, Simon, and enjoy your videos tremendously. I think sometimes 'natural' photographers are not as appreciated as those who shoot iconic landscapes but they certainly do understand that the sum of little things are what create wonderful landscapes. Simon - all three images are print-worthy and quite nice. I like the pine cones, quite a bit - they are something I look for while out and about. I think the star of this day has to be the green leaves on the black background - far and away the best images, IMHO.

I for one enjoy it most when you do this type of vlog, with detailed narrative. It shows the knowledge you have and willing to share with us, so we learn from you. They also show some of your excitement and passion for the environment which I find rewarding.

I do find your films really inspiring Simon. Your knowledge and indeed your enthusiasm for the natural environment that you are in is infectious. Loved all those images, but for me that green pine cone snuggled in amongst the others is an excellent shot and my favourite
Thanks Jamie. The pine cones were the firm favourite for me too, but I did like the starwort very much until I found the cones! Interestingly, no one has commented on the green one being a little brown on top and why I hadn't twisted it around. Very surprised! I rather like this as it shows the transition from freshly fallen to old and decaying.
I’m having a wonderful time going back to watch earlier episodes which I have not seen. It is encouraging to see how you can get such beautiful images from such simple subject matter. The pine cone shot is brilliant.
Yes, it's similar to the recent one I did but it just goes to show how one subject can provide so many different opportunities!

Thanks so much for this video Simon. It really captured all the best things about being out and about in the countryside for me. The excitement I still get finding a badger sett or owl pellets under a tree makes me feel like I'm a kid again, walking home with an owl pellet in my hand. I really like it when you give us interesting tips like the one about the sycamore trees and the fungi (could that be anything to do with sycamores inhibiting the growth of mycellium?). Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in the everyday cares of work etc. and forget to enjoy what's around you. Thanks for reminding me what's important. Elaine
Hello Elaine. Thanks for writing again! I can tell that you too have a life long passion for nature! Did you know that barn owls have a very low gastric PH value and this is why there are so many bones in thier pellets. I actually think you are correct in the mycellium theory! I'm sure I have read this somewhere!
@@SimonBoothPhotography I'd never thought of the gastric pH. Makes sense otherwise the bones would be dissolved. I will never look at the bones in a barn owl pellet without thinking of that now. My Dad's foot had much the same effect when I was a kid when he stood in a tray full of bones that I had carefully disected out of an owl pellet I had found. I was so upset.

I've always got my macro lens packed when I'm shooting in woodland and it's been a Godsend many times ! Delightful video again Simon. My personal favourite is the "puddle" shot which also provides a lesson for us all. Namely to look, even where it seems unlikely that you will find a shot.

Really enjoyed the detailed explanations of your adventure! Loved the shot last week side by side with the different light and atmosphere. my favorite from the trilogy was the fern, the symmetry was intriguing.
Thank you Robert. It's interesting how we all have different favourites. The fern was not mine, as I prefer the cones. Probably because I have done similar shots with ferns before, whereas the pine cones were a first for me!
Simon Booth I live in Maine in the USA where our state flower is the pine cone and tassels, they are everywhere, likely why I wasn't drawn to them. Funny how we become so familiar with things around us that we can loose sight of how wonderful they really are.

Simon, As a suggestion. Could you have a simple list of what you describe in your videos and the basic minute mark? This might be more work than is worth doing be it really would be nice to look at and learn what the item really is.

Thanks Dave. I recently sold my 1Dx so the wildlife stuff is on hold at the moment. I do love the close up detail type of photography but my passion for feathers and fur is not as great as it once was sadly. I have my reasons, but I won't voice them on here!

I love the fact that finding the dung pit of a badger made your day. I sometimes come downstairs in the morning to find on the carpet what we call "thunder buttons" from our cat, and I have to say I'm just not as thrilled about these things as you seem to be. Does that camera only have one card slot (it looks like it on the back)? Great images! Your ability to "see" is extraordinary (most of us would just walk past all that stuff). BTW, I haven't moved a pine cone or leaf or twig in 35 years...well, maybe once.... ;-)
Hi Peter, I think the ecology work makes you obsessed with poo as it's often all we find to base our assessments on! As for thunder buttons (great name)! Our dog manages to keep them stuck to her fur until such time we notice and pick them off...great fun! The Pentax only has a small card slot door, but it takes two SD cards!
Great film, it’s really inspirational for someone like myself who’s just starting out in macro/wildlife photography. Just a quick question what tripod do you use. It’s time to upgrade mine and yours looks like the kind of thing I’m after. Cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, my main tripod is a Gitzo, which is the one on this film. Benro do good one's too! For macro recently I have been using my old Uniloc 1600 Major, but they are a bit on the heavy side.

Like the boots Simon, they look pretty weatherproof,what make are they?
Made me laugh when I saw your comment pop up Neil. This week I noticed that my boots had sprung a leak :-). Joking aside, I am going to buy another pair because I love them. The make is Grubs and I usually get the Snowline but still wear them year round. They're a tad on the heavy side but they literally go anywhere in any weather. I have considered walking boots so many times, but I am forever crossing streams and standing in water or boggy ground.
Just note that the Grubs Treeline has all the warmth and comfort but has a sole developed more for snow, which has been great for even general use for me. The Treeline has a slightly different sole (still Vibram) and has a ripstop material around the soft upper part. I'm considering these because I think a snag may have caused the leak. The only downside is that they are camouflaged, which I don't really car for.
The badger digs a relatively deep hole for his faces. The dung attracts dung beetles which do not succeed to get out of the hole. In the evening the badger returns and eats the beetles. Sometimes you see their blueish wings left over glue in those holes.
I have actually seen what you describe Walter, though how much of this falls down to coincidence is a mystery! Badger pitfall traps...I like the sounds of that!

I really like the starwort and the pine cones Simon. I'm not as fond of the fern image, I like the lighting on it but the balance of the comp doesn't appeal to me as much as the other two.
I agree with you Robert. Ordinarily I would have angled the fern across the frame diagonally, but I have done a shot like that on an earlier film!
The black spots on the sycamore leaves are fungi
You're right peter, did I say lichen?
Ahh, I watched it back. I mentioned fungi here petering out because I was referring to the typical toadstool type, which tend not to be so abundant in our sycamore woodlands! It just goes to show that you are paying attention though Peter!
