I’m a bit late to the video having only just discovered your amazing channel. I loved the format and I love to hear about your process. The crop marks were really helpful to see how you found the composition in the wider scene. I really enjoy your style Simon. Your mix of optimism, enjoyment and positivity with an honest description of the challenges we all go through is just so relatable. Thank you.
It’s September 2021 and I’ve just discovered your channel and have subscribed. What I really appreciate is how you challenge the viewer to identify the potential subject and then describe and show how you choose to frame the shot, that really is helping me develop my skills and making me think. You have developed a great way of not just involving, but also teaching the viewer. Thank you Simon.
I enjoy your Videos so much. So calm, narrative, picturesque! Every single one of them! And this beautiful Image of the treetops and the sky. Thank you for that.
Cheers Paul and sorry for my slow reply. I generally do replies as a new film is about to go live. The trip seems like a distant memory now and like all these places, when I get back, I wish I would have tried to appreciate it more...do you do that?
Hello Simon, the formation of talking about composition by framing is absolutely amazing, giving us opportunities for our own one verses yours, great learning experience. thank you very much
City streets or country lanes, I tend to shoot the whole of my subject. On all but the first, I would not have cropped in so close. Your "reveal" of the crop marks revealed to me that I should look tighter as well. Thanks for responding to our needs, and finding a way to demonstrate the steps you take.
Wonderful format Simon. It was like following your favorite teacher around watching you work through those frames. Always appreciate and enjoy your work. Cheers
Thanks Tony - Showing the crop marks during the film and the 'see if you can spot the composition' segment was a trial, but It's been so well received that I will do this fairly regularly form now on. I have a couple of films nearly ready to go again but they don't incorporate this quite so well, but watch this space.

The pre image setup description is helpful in seeing what you are planning. I do LOVE the first image looking vertically up through the canopy ..... Fantastic!! Image #2 are also beautiful with such vibrant Autumn colour. I always learn something new. Tahnks for sharing Simon. Cheers.

#capturewithconfidence Please let me know in the comments below if you want to see more of the in field cropping during future videos. In this film, my favourite has to be the tree canopy, followed by the lone birch. On reflection, I'm not a big fan of the last image.
I think you may be able to turn the 'cropping' scene into a viewer guessing game? I'm interested in what questions you ask yourself while you look for images. I liked the first tree in the sky photo the most because it had a nice colour contrast and also lots of smoothness around the high frequency detail trees. The other images are still too busy for my liking, but maybe an carefully added blur could help them.
Always a pleasure watching you at work....as for woodland photography I've come to the conclusion that I'm better just appreciating a woodland rather than photographing it! lol
Julian, really! Now you mention it, you don't have any woodland videos, do you! I'm beginning to think it's where i'm happiest! Thanks again for dropping in.

From my point of view, probably the most effective and usefuil of your films, Simon: at least, amongst those watched so far (I'm almost half way through). Beeing capable of "seeing" a compelling view or detail in the natural chaos of woodlands, isolating it from the surroundings and framing it successffully is - for me - the most challenging task. I will now begin to see with different eyes: thank you so much!
Thanks Glauco. I sincerely hope you enjoy the other films too. It's not easy making the films without any scripts or idea of how the day will go. Thanks for your support.

Thank you for another instructional video. I always include too much so really useful to follow your cropping guides. My favourite along with many others was the canopy shot. However the lichen covered tree was fantastic. I learnt a lot.
going through your old videos as another new comer to the the channel, but this format is brilliant, especially with the crop lines. keep up the great work.

Still doing a bit of catch up, but really love this video Simon. Its a very clever way of explaining what you see and what you are focusing in on. Also really interesting to see your crop in process on screen. I can appreciate the work that has gone into this and appreciate the effort.
Hi Simon, just discovered your channel and I'm a big fan already. Great idea scanning the scene with the camera. Really shows the thought process involved in capturing those fantastic images.
Hi D and thanks for watching. Hope you will stay with the channel by adding it to your subscription list! Be sure to watch the back catalogue. There’s some really great episodes to catch up on!
Hands down my favourite is the photo looking up at the tops of the trees. The separation of the trees is spot on. Wonderful shot.
I really liked the images and I also liked the way you showed how the composition fit into the larger scene. I would love to see more in this format.

Good heavens (no pun intended), that image at 8:40 is excellent. The separation of trees and the colours really make it work. Brilliantly seen.
Thanks Tom. Nothing beats finding a good one!
Yes, the tree canopy all the way. I like the variety of trees that you captured👍

Love how those images break the iconic and cliche images we often have from autumn. My goodness they're amazing.
Loved the showing of the bigger view first, leading me into the actual image. Thanks.
Thank you Simon. I often look up at tree tops. The message is, "stand tall even in stormy times."
I do too, and I'm forever tripping over!
I have mentioned this exact personal struggle with respect to composition in the woods just a few days ago
What fantastic colour in this woodland Simon.
one of the more informative videos, nice the way you showed the hole scene and then layed the crop on top
