    I did a Wayne sump pump install a couple years ago very similar to this. What I found was with a check valve after the pump, the discharge line in the wall could freeze and therefore leave the sump pump running and over heat it. This is a really cold climate application (alberta Canada), but it worked great once I just took the check valve out.

    • @brad1953
      @brad1953 Год назад +7

      All you have to do is disconnect your drainage hose from the outside of your house once the temperature reaches zero and the line will never freeze. I live in Manitoba so I know a thing or two about cold weather haha. If you don't have check valve, the water will always be running back into your pit and the pump will always be turning on. My advice is to put the check valve back and just before winter, disconnect your outside drainage hose and I promise you that your line will never freeze

    • @RawFitChris
      @RawFitChris Год назад

      Interesting and it makes sense. So, if the ground is properly graded so the water flows away from the pump, then there should be no problem, right?
      In my particular situation however, we have an underground water source that would be above freezing temp. It isn't constantly flowing in. So what's the solution?

    • @PongoXBongo
      @PongoXBongo Год назад +2

      What is the slope angle on your exterior discharge pipe? It should be a solid, non-corrugated PVC pipe with a slope angle of at least 1 inch per foot. If the water isn't draining quickly enough to prevent freezing, you may need to increase the slope angle. Adding a weep hole to allow standing water to drain out may also help. (This coming from a guy in Wisconsin, USA.)

    • @ettorecasagrande8534
      @ettorecasagrande8534 11 месяцев назад +1

      What they didn't show is that the pipe exiting the home is sloped downward, so that piece of pipe has no water in it. The column of water in the vertical part of the pipe is heated by your home, and every time the pump runs, it will melt the tiny amounts of water droplets that remain in the discharge ... then the droplets will freeze again.
      Your friend's pipe exiting the home was likely sloped upwards.

    • @Dansyoung
      @Dansyoung 11 месяцев назад +1

      The slope outside shouldn’t have been an issue the drain was routed underground (by the builder) to a drain at the front street, and where this connection was it had a pipe installed where water could exit if the drain became frozen. The water froze in the vertical pipe at the exterior wall - again this was in the extreme cold -40 Celsius.

    I am pretty sure that the check valve needs to be 12-18 inches above the pump outlet to to act as a pressure buffer when the pump kicks on. It looks like they may have it, but they did not mention that there also needs to be a small vent hole in the (1/8 - 3/16") just under the check valve so to prevent hydrolock.

    • @SilentServiceCode
      @SilentServiceCode 5 лет назад +1

      this WAYNE pump does not need the weep hole. the check valve could realistically be almost anywhere as long as it's near the pump.

      Depends on the amount of water you're dealing with. They make smaller versions of sumps for landscaping use that may work better in your case. Check around online, or call around locally, for pump sizing calculators. Might not hurt to have a pro come out and assess the situation.

    • @sebastianramos8491

      A pump will work but you should have a French drain with a pump

    • @PongoXBongo
      @PongoXBongo Год назад

      Sump pumps are designed to prevent flooded basements, so they should work in your case. A French drain would help direct water from around your basement to the sump basin to be pumped out. If you're unsure, you can usually get a licensed installer in your area to come out and do an assessment and make recommendations as to components, placements, sizing, etc. That one-time service fee can save you a lot of headaches in the future. You may even decide to contract them to do the work for you.

    Upon changing my sump pump, again, I cleaned the pit/liner first, before installing new sump pump.
    Also did the weeping hole per Zoeller manual.
    Pump is a Rigid 1/2 hp
    I noticed the bottom is cracked.
    I was quoted $990 to replace the pit.
    I Google this issue first and found out, that there pit/ liner is suppose to have holes to allow water to come into the pit. And then the pump to eject the water outdoor.
    So, is the crack at issue then?
    The water rises to it's previous waterline that it doesn't even trigger the pump at. It used to get trigger to almost an hour, or not at all.
    Should I leave the crack alone?

    If the plastic sump liner ("basin") has a bottom, it is better to leave it in place - do not cut it away. If it doesn't already have factory-made holes in it, drill a series of 1/2 inch diameter holes around the wall of the basin *_near_* the bottom , and two or three holes in the bottom, with a total area equal to 100% to 200% of the area of the discharge pipe. That way the pump will be resting on a clean, flat plastic surface and there is no need to block it up on a concrete paver.
    Not shown in this video, but highly essential, fashion a strong lid for the sump out of a steel plate or exterior-grade plywood, to prevent someone's foot going into the sump and possibly twisting and ankle or breaking a leg.
    This looked like a desperate job. I would prefer doing it during a period of dry weather, when the water table has fallen below the elevation of the basin bottom.

My question is the inside sump pump doesn't seem it has a drain That dumps water in the pit (water tank sump pump sits in) but the outer sump pump has a visible drain that I can see......last month I start getting water coming out from under tile near sump pump....do you think this is because of the sump pump not having a foundation drain the leads to sump pump or maybe because of the plastic basin floor.
      Thanks for any feed back that you may have

      Not arguing with the idea that you should leave the bottom mostly intact, but I don't know where you're getting 100%-200% fo the discharge pipe size. That makes no sense, as the discharge pipe is handling water from a sump pump, but the basin is filling simply from the water table. Water is not going to come in the basin holes nearly as quickly as its going to get shot out the discharge pipe under pressure. So, with your way, the pump will be short cycling all the time.

    I don't think it's a good idea to cut off the bottom of the sump basin, better to leave it attached and drill holes. With 6 inches of gravel all the way around the perimeter and on the bottom (outside of the basin) it is not necessary to use the fabric. Over a long period of time the fabric can actually become clogged or loaded with sediment not letting the water in properly. Remember: Water in water out, let the gravel be the filter. It would be a shame to re-do a job like this.

    Was this done just as a hole in the basement floor? I have a similar setup in my house without weeping tile or anything that would collect water to the basin...wondering if its possible to just put in a hole like this but slightly deeper and just hope the water finds its way to the basin?

    • @JonTessy18
      @JonTessy18 7 лет назад

      robsenz123 very possible, that water was there when they made it through the concrete for the fact, that's where the water table was. the more saturated the ground is the higher the water level in the ground gets. my basement gets wet after a good 3 days of rain due to this, look up hydrostatic pressure. You can have a super sealed basement, but if enough water is in the ground it can buckle and crack your foundation.

    • @Gantzz321
      @Gantzz321 6 лет назад

      most foundations have a layer of rock under them, to allow water to flow, preferably away from the house. So installing a sump pump will aid in this process, especially if you do not have a weeping tile to drain it away. It's not necessary to go any deeper either.

    • @UToobin75
      @UToobin75 3 года назад

      I would assume that the homeowner was having problems with seepage in that particular corner. Depending on the size of the basement, it's likely that without drain tile surrounding the length of the basement perimeter, a setup as shown will do little to nothing to alleviate seepage anywhere but the area where the basin is installed.

      i went through 3-4 home depot pumps over 5-6 years. they kept on burning out on debris clogging up the intake. finally decided to spend the money on a zoeller m53 which has been running fine for 7 years, no problems. they aren't that much more but great quality, made in USA too.

    • @jasonbaker2126
      @jasonbaker2126 7 лет назад +1

      I recommend Zoeller sump pumps also such as an N57 or N53. The cheap pump that was in our house originally died 2 months after we moved in. Actually, it was just the switch that died. For that reason, I would also recommend getting a sump pump without a built in switch. The switch is the item that is most prone to failure even if the motor in the pump is fine. You can get a similar style switch that is separate from the pump that just clamps to the pipe. It's not as clean looking, but when the switch dies, and it will, you can just replace the switch and not the entire pump.

    • @bouncingsoul777
      @bouncingsoul777 7 лет назад +1

      Jason Baker Just add to what you you said, I had a Zoeller M53 that finally gave out after 12+ years of very heavy use. Pretty much any time it rained a bit, this pump was running. Anyway, I came down the steps to the basement, once, to find the pump constantly running to the point it was smoking. I unplugged it and figured out that the switch had failed (the Achilles heal of any sump pump). I guess I was lucky, in that, the switch failed on the "on" position. I bought an external switch, similar to what you described, and hooked it up to the burned up M53. It worked! The pump still kept the basement dry for the next week or so until I got around to replacing it with an M57. I've kinda been a believer in Zoeller pumps since.

    • @jasonbaker2126
      @jasonbaker2126 7 лет назад +1

      That's a really good point. It can get stuck being on as well as off, so a separate switch won't protect you from that. But if the switch dies it the off position, you can still salvage the pump and only have to replace the switch.

      Depends on the codes where you live. Some places allow for emptying rain discharge into sewer lines but not sump discharge. If you're just discharging into your yard, then it should be a problem. In fact, that's what I'm planning to do with mine this spring (a local plumber said it's a-ok here). Just make sure a downspout full of leaves doesn't cause your sump to back up. And DO NOT use that cheap, corrugated downspout tubing as it can clog and/or freeze up.

    Hey guys, because my sewer line kept getting backed up, even after replacing it, I called a handyman that did a lot of work for me, to see what was the sewer line’s problem. He told me we should install a sun pump so we did. He cut the cast iron pipe in the house by the house trap going to the street in NYC and installed a sum pump. Basically he cut off about 2 feet off 6” pipe and the all the incoming water went in to a small hole he dug n sum pump spit it out to the pipe to go thru house trap to the street sewer all crushed so that they won’t cause backup. Basically every half hour or so machine would come on n empty the house discharges. After it’s running for 4 months, sum pump died. My question is, should he have done that? Now looking back, I made a big mistake allowing him. Was that ever supposed to work? I trusted his judgment n cut my original cast iron pipe 😢Thank you for any feedback.

      There is a layer of gravel under the foundation of the house that allows water to slowly work its way around. But, eventually, it can all rise up to the level of the floor, then above and into the basement itself. The pit and pump are meant to remove and safely redirect some of that water before it gets to the point of flooding. Like how placing a pump in the corner of a swimming pool will pull water from the entire pool.

      I don't think this is this easy. The water need a way to leak into the basin. If you just dig a hole and put the liner in it, only the water from the surface of the basement floor will find its way there. The under slab ground water will still leak through the floor where it's most convenient for it. One would need to dig a trench around the perimeter of the basement and install drain pipes to do the job right.
