Agree, Im less interested in the high end, expensivem hard to find whiskies, I may watch a review out of curiosity but not really my thing. I am more into middle range, easier to find
The key to successful blending either wine or whisky is having the ability to forecast what it will taste like after marrying the components together for 6 months or more. I have been on wine panels in which we created a blend and then revisited the blend a year later and the changes were remarkable. Needless to say, to do this professionally and on a large scale requires years of experience. This is why wine makers taste EVRYTHING at each step of the process - the grapes, the juice, and repeatedly during the fermentation and aging process so you can create a memory of the before & after effects of the wine making process. Undoubtedly this applies to whiskies as well. This is why I like to taste new make / white dog.
Even without blending, wine and I'd imagine whiskey to some extent, changes immensely during the aging of 6-12 months. Usually with an improvement but not always.
You guys are so awesome ..! Greetings from Istanbul , Turkey 🇹🇷 🇹🇷 You’ve made me fall in love with whiskey ..! Was a wine drinker all along until last year I decided to dive into the whiskey world .. As a beginner , I have probably had the strangest transition any beginner would ever have as I started with Jameson and went straight to Ardbeg and Lagavulin ..! Now can’t get enough of these smokey Islay whiskies ..! Though recently I have been really enjoying some Highland and Speyside whiskies ( Oban , Balvenie , Aberlour ) ...
Smooth, the nicest left handed compliment I have seen lately. And Rex, silent for 12 minutes, I do not for one minute believe Rex could be silent for that long I mean you can see the veins in his neck throbbing during an awkward pause.
Recently discovered this and, for the price point (roughly $25-30 for a bottle), it's incredibly hard to beat. Monkey Shoulder is also a great blend, but this has some slight peaty notes on the finish that I really, really enjoy. At the very least, this is a great (and cheap) introduction to Scotch.
Thank you for mentioning the slight peaty notes on the Dewar's. I was deciding between the 2. I will still get the monkey shoulder but will start the Dewar's.
Unrelated to the video.... been watching yalls channel for several months now and you have significantly helped me both find my whisk(e)y way and spend an alarming amount of my money. Been drinking mostly neat but I had a buddy over and we decided to have a couple old fashioneds. I told him to pick whatever whiskey he wanted and he chose the angels envy finished in port barrels. Admittedly I cringed a bit. Turned out to be really delightful. Actually tasted like a chocolate orange. Though y’all might find that interesting, as I did, if you weren’t already aware. Party on!
Admittedly, my "guilty" pleasure whisky is Johnnie Walker Black Label. While I LOVE cask strength peated malts most and there are certainly better blends out there. There's just something about JWBL that's easy and enjoyable. I have a lot of fond memories sipping on it. I think people who snub mainstream whiskies are just trying to be cool, because deep down we all have a fondness for what we started with.
Never tried the 12 year old, but I was recently introduced to the Dewar’s 15 year old which was a very pleasant experience. I’ve tried the Dewar’s White Label before which I thought was a bit average. Their 15 year old however is absolutely gorgeous.
Currently building my Dewar's collection. I have 8 Glencairne glasses and I got White Label, Caribbean Smooth, Portuguese Smooth and Illegal Smooth and still need 12 year and Scratched Cask. Once I have them all I am going to do A-B-C etc... comparisons. Looking forward to the experience 😁
Dewars was my first entry into Scotch 40 years ago. My pallet has evolved since then into the more smokeier peatier scotches, but still like Dewar's from time to time.
Aberfeldy 12 was one of the first scotches I fell in love with and after reading various reviews tried the Dewars 12. I expect I'll always have a bottle on hand. Good taste and great value, being at a price point of the very cheapest single malts I can find around here in Western Canada (Aberfeldy 12 is about 50% more expensive).
I read a comment on this Dewars somewhere that said it's core were 3 different whiskies and one was Alberfeldy. I like that dram too. Here's the excerpt from whiskey exchange: "A well crafted blend with Aberfeldy, Aultmore and Cragganmore at the core."
I found this at my local grocery store at around $22.00/btl. I swear that this scotch is the smoothest I've found (being a Johnnie Walker fan forever) and I can easily consume Too Much if I'm not careful, it goes down so smooth. Much prefer it to the Buchanan's 12 (at about the same price point). Glad you did a video about it.
Just grabbed myself a bottle for $23. Was going to get some glen but seen this and figured for the price to give it a shot. You can't beat this for the value, no way.
I recently started experiencing some whiskey and have not been able to determine exactly what he difference is between "aged" vs "old" can some please clarify this for me?
I like to mix it up when drinking whiskey. not all at the same time mind you. maybe a sip of this one on Tuesday and a sip of that one on Thursday. that's why I like to have several bottles around so I can have something a bit different. Dewers is one of those that I like to have a bottle I can go back to every now and then
What's the best whiskey for an Irish car bomb? I'm usually not the type for chugging alcohol, but the car bomb has always been a favorite. Theres nothing wrong with Jameson, bailey's, and guiness.... but I always wonder if I'm missing out on other great irish whiskeys for this particular pastime
5:00 I agree, I'm kind of new to the scene and at the moment stock standard Wild Turkey is the best thing I've ever had, and I'll sit there and sip it like lagavulin
Love this Chanel. Daniel, with your sommelier medallion, you’re a big pair of glasses away from looking like a Caucasian FlavaFlave. Thanks for the vid.
In my life, I've had a few people ask me what my favorite alcohol is? For a while there, my answer was, "Whatever's cheapest". (as a teen, my answer was just, "yes") But for the last 30 plus years I jut say, "If I don't have to gargle with it or splash it on my face, I'll drink it". With the qualifier; "I just won't pay for light beer" Will this help me become a great Mooch. such as yourself?? And if so, what else should I work on?
I managed to find a few bottles of these for $44 AUS at a local supermarket. Happily paid given they were reduced in terms of price. I may open my last bottle tonight and see if it's worth full price.
I'm drinking this neat while watching your review. I get the ashy taste and also a bitterness. Not bad, but the bitterness rears it's head during the finish. I wonder how this would taste in a Manhattan?
I just bought a fifth for $33. I’m brand new to the whiskey scene and I gotta say that I have found a new hobby. So far I’ve bought Glenfiddich 12, Monkey Shoulder, Maker’s Mark, Maker’s Mark 46 and Dewars. I have to say that my favorite so far is Glenfiddich and Monkey Shoulder and Dewars the least. But that is like saying I like brunettes and red heads the most and blondes the least… I have really enjoyed them all.
I wouldn’t say sulphuric. When I think sulphuric I think of the hot springs I used to live by and the rotten egg smell that would come off. This was definitely more of an ash flavor for me!
Kurtis Struemke because I’ve had Craigellachie 13 and the finish kinda sulphuric which I don’t like.. And Craigellachie probably included in Dewars blended. Thanks for your comment, cheers...
I just did a nice blender 60% nikka from the barrel 40% glenfarclas 105 :o pretty darn good, I'd say though 50%nikka 25% glenfarcles, and 15% laphroaig triple wood cask strength. Would have to be best!

Picked up my first smokey whiskey ever the other day. Got pointed to smokey Joe as something not too expensive. Was not ready for exactly what was meant by an aggressive smokey flavor.
@@steverochon1620 thanks, I plan to continue the journey of whiskey, I'd been wanting a smokey one for a while, just didn't realize how big of a difference it would be to go from monkey shoulder to something with smoke.
This one is in my "top three under thirty". Black Bottle, Teachers Highland Cream(best value of all), and the Dewars 12. The Teachers has some mild, detectable smokiness which separates if from the other two entries. The Dewars isn't going to blow your hair back, but it's a very pleasant sipper. Far superior to JWR, Chivas, Monkey Shoulder which IMO are all a bit overrated. I like JWB, but for me my "top three" make JWB a very marginal purchase at its price point.

I really enjoy the "mainstream" whisky reviews. It's nice to see a review on something I know I can run down and grab right now if I wanted too.
I just review everything, can't go wrong if you try it all says I.
Yes! Dewars 12yo is a regular in my cabinet and something I sip weekly.

I'd love to see you guys to do a review of the Laphroaig 10 CS

My local store sells a 1.75l bottle of the Dewar's 12 for $41. At that price I consider it an excellent whisky.
In the Dallas area Dewar's 12 is considerably cheaper than Buchanan's 12, Johnnie Walker Black, and Chivas Regal.
