  • Tim and Dave sit down with this 15 year old blended whisky from Dewar's. Rich, weighty flavours of honey and vanilla stand this expression significantly appart from the standard white lable.

    Dewar’s master blender is Stephanie Macleod the first female blender at Dewars in its history. She is responsible for this blend. Worth remembering.

    Nice review. I like the fact you review bottles you rate as average. Too many RUclips reviewers seem to only review bottles they think at least somewhat highly of (and I don't mean only Ralfy here). I like to hear the occasional "this is bang on average and that's about it" opinion, too, for I know those whiskies are out there.

    I just picked up 2 1Litre bottles for shade shade under $100 CDN. I considered that a smoking deal. I like the bite and subtle smoke in the White Label, and decided to try this out. It's a very nice blend for this price.
    I was delighted to rediscover that you gents had reviewed this. After tasting it, I'd agree with your assessment

    I wonder at what average age grain spirits start to 'soften'? I know many Canadian whiskies are high corn content, with rye and barley, and are quite smooth at what I believe is 8-12 years. How is it that Canada can make such smooth, young grain whisky?

    Thank you for tasting and reviewing this, now I don't have to. Not a huge Dewars fan. I like the Aberfeldy 21, especially after it's sat a month of so after opening. I did a recent review on it.

    Not sure why I think of this now, but you two would do great together as actors in a Shakespeare drama.
    10:59 In case that means you look for further inspirations, there's been a great hype around the Compass Box blends lately, and they keep getting stellar ratings. Now I just wonder if those ratings are hyped as a reward for their transparency coup or wether their products are actually worth their considerable prices.

      It managed to pass me by that compass box was getting hype at the
      moment. They're pricey, as blends go, but they are all avaliable down
      here, so we'll see what we can do.

    Never tried the Dewars 15 yr. I generally haven't tried too many blends.I will try it one of these days. One that is wonderful however is Usquaebach Reserve blend. Pretty good on first opening, and then only improves with time. It has a unique slightly bitter side, and is just delicious.
    Hopefully you can find it where you are, and do a review on it. However I do prefer single malts and bourbons. One single malt that is also delicious and reminds me some of the Usquaebach is Craigellachie 13 year old. Slainte

      Usquaebach is one that isn't distributed down here, but I'll keep my eyes open just in case. I do love a Craigellachie, though, but I usually go for independantly bottled ones.

    Aberfeldy is a decent highland malt but nothing to write home about. The town of Aberfeldy is a couple hours north of Glasgow. Not far from Edradour. Aberfeldy is a fun little town. The Dewar's Experience is there. Really nice distillery grounds and shop. Decent blended whisky though I still prefer JW Black. Ice in a blend is absolutely acceptable. I do it all the time in summer.

      I bought a bottle of Aberfeldy 12 in the distant past. I remember very little about it beyond it being a pleasant enough dram, so our experiences with it were probably very simmilar. That said, I suppose you wouldn't want a heart malt of particularly individual character unless your blend expressed that character in kind (the peaty Teachers and Ardmore for example)

    • @ArtMorte
      @ArtMorte 7 лет назад

      My experience with Aberfeldy 12 was to think that what's the point to release it as single malt... Perhaps the most forgettable single malt I've had. Not unpleasant, just forgettable. Rather buy a Chivas 12 for an every day dram.

      The Dewar's is a lot softer and more mellow than JW Green, but the Green is a blended malt (no grain at all) so its punchier than almost any normal blended.

    What you said at 3:30 is slightly confusing because you implied that ONLY the "whisky" component" needs to be 15 years old. I'm not sure what you meant by this exactly but to clarify, both grain (corn....) distiiled spirit and malted barley distilled spirit within that blended whisky, once aged in oak casks for 3 years are called whisk[e]y! Moreover, in a Blend that has an age statement, (as far as I understand) this means that *every* spirit component (both grain and malted barley) must be matured in oak for at least that age! (It does not mean that only the malted barley component need be that age).

    • @TheSingleMaltReview
      @TheSingleMaltReview  7 лет назад

      Put that down to word-salad on our part in this particular case. As you say, the age statement absolutely applies to all elements of a blend, be they malt or grain.

    Dewer's Aberfeldy is southern Highlands, not Speyside. It's south of Blair Atholl and Edradour and slightly north of Glenturret, all off of or near the A9 road, all around the Pitlochry area.
    *There are actually lots of 15 Year old single malts.*
    To name a few, Tomatin do a 100% Ex-Bourbon 15 Year Old. (Average rating). Dalwhinnie's standard expression is also a 100% Ex-Bourbon 15 Year Old. (Highly rated by me and very underated by most others). Glenfiddich do their sweet oaky 15 YO, to plug the gap between the standard 12 and the expensive 18+s.
    The Glenlivet likewise has their 15 YO Travel Retail and the 15 YO French Oak expression, both to plug the Glenlivet range gap between their standard 12 YO and their overrated sugar bomb 18 YO. It's for those who want to spend more money than the 12 but cannot afford the 18 or 21. (Believe me, you aint missing out).
    One of the finest Highland single malts available today is the 100% Ex-Bourbon and very delicious Glencadam 15 YO. Other 15 YO are produced by Glengoyne, Dalmore and of course the new, expensive and very disappointing Laphroaig 15 Yo, a stop gap replacement to the fantastic and bitterly missed Laphroaig 18 YO classic.
    PS
    I just did a price search and found that this Dewar's 15 Year Old blend is around US$ 45! That's a comparable price to many 15 YO single malts such as the Dalwhinnie 15 YO, The Glenlivet 15 YO French Oak etc.....why would anyone spend their money on a blend like this?

    • @andreas_kuenster
      @andreas_kuenster 3 года назад

      "...why would anyone spend their money on a blend like this?" - > Why not!? It's about the taste of the one that buys it. If you are a Blend drinker you would maybe prefer it over a single malt. It's a different type of whisky drinker and a completely different type of whisky. Why the comparison all the time? they have both their market. I drink all kinds of whisky no matter where they come from - But I never got why the Single Malt is always the kind of untouchable Holly Grail!?

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews 3 года назад

      @@andreas_kuenster Thanks for the comment. I can understand why someone would prefer Blends over some Single Malts. There are many who prefer gin or vodka or cocktails over Whisky, because of the taste. I support your right to drink whatever and however you want. That doesn't stop me from having an opinion though. If its' a casual Blended Whisky Scotch experience you are after then great. I get that. But if you start spending serious money on these Premium Blended whiskies, it is this I personally cannot understand.
      A Blended Whisky, as I'm sure you know, is a "blend" of industrial neutral grain alcohol, usually wheat based which is distilled in a stainless steel continuous column still. That makes up the bulk of the whisky in the bottle. It is then blended (hence its name) with various Single Malts, made from malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills which produce a specific character. It is the job of the Master Blender to take these single malts and craft them into a particular flavour profile for that blend. I don't think anyone would argue that almost all the flavour is coming from the various malt whiskies and not from the neutral grain whisky which is effectively there as filler. Having said that, I do admit that the Grain Whisky does affect the final flavour, adding more custard and biscuity notes to the whisky.
      So, let's take Johnny Walker Black Label or even the Double Black. You like the smoky taste. You like the slight coastal character and perhaps the citrus undertones. Aren't you curious to know where these flavours come from? I would recommend you try sampling the Caol Ila 12 Year Old Single Malt. You might find it too intense. You might however find that what you liked in that JW Black Label is there in the Caol Ila but 100 times the flavour and character. It's just my opinion. If I ever met you, I wouldn't say no to sitting down over a Blended whisky and discussing this further. To your very good health !

    On the nose: honey and toffee with a hint of smoke. Very shy, even after 20 minutes in Glencairn glass. Nose is young than 15yo, grain alcohol is prominent. Honey and toffee continues on the palate with sultanas. and nuts. Feel a little thin, but very smooth, no burn. Quality and old malts are present, but this blend is too delicate. Finish is short/medium, with honey, touch of smoke and spices. A solid but, shy blend that doesn't offer much more than the already good Dewar's 12. Inoffensive, but forgettable. Compass Box King Street, Old Parr 12 are less expensive and offer more than this. Makes a good gift for someone who doesn't drink scotch often.

    Ha Ha...adding ice is *not* naughty or wicked. I also live in a very hot climate, in Israel's Judean desert to the east of Jerusalem where temps can get pretty high. There is nothing more delicious on a Shabbat (Saturday) lunch time than a Glencairn glass of Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 12 or Kilchoman 100% Islay malt with a single lump of ice. Those who live in the UK simply don't understand this unique whisky experience.
