In the 60/70’s we used this hack by putting the jelly on an old UV filter, (no food wrap then). Or a stocking with fine denier and a tiny hole in the centre held on the lens same way with rubber bands. Great fun thanks.
Been doing this for years. Works great. Also used to take uv filters and paint them with clear nail polish leaving the middle unpainted. Does the same thing, and you don’t have to get messy.
@@bermchasin didn’t have post when I was doing it. I used a film camera then. Don’t do it anymore. But sometimes, using actual real time effects can be better and more unique then what you can do on a computer. More fun too.
@@bermchasin It is fun to sometimes get off your computer, do actual things. Is there a reason to have a real person as a partner with all the AI we have? A pet?
Nice! Back in the 1970s and 80s , we used to do this with just plastic wrap wrinkled up, held on with a rubber band, and a hole cut on the middle. It helped to keep the plastic wrap in your pocket for a while to get it scuffed up. That way it’s no mess and easy to carry along in your photo gear. You could by mist filters with a hole in them, but with a plastic bag you can vary the hole size to taste
I total gave up on portraits, because it stopped being fun for me. But, this fun little vid made me want to both try this effect and try shooting portraits again. Well done.
Similar: Attach a piece of transparent scotch tape to the camera lens in a V shape, ensuring that it does not come into contact with the glass. You can do colors too with a small plastic coloured post-it.
In addition to all that was already added; if you find yourself with any vaseline, plastic wrap or stockings, a go-to quick pinch hack is rubbing nose grease (the natural oils and sweat from your nose) on to an old filter. Always good to have an old UV or Skylight filter in your bag for creative moments like this. I still have in my bag my skylight filter I used from 40 years ago just for this reason.
Panty hose stretched over the lens with a rubber band is excellent. Different denier & colours, created really great looks. Been doing this & the filter thing for 30 years. 😊
Its a well made video but its not like its her idea or something? This is like a big photography gimic that we all have seen before? I must say that I rarely say it work so nice!
The photos were really great the back lights in the image helped elevating the effect 💖🤍. Also I can relate to haydons feeling of jelousy as the lightings were damn pefect and I also felt like if I was their to cature the images, also loved the model.
I've mentioned this before on this technique: You could get two lens protection filters (or even UV). Then, you put vaseline on one and then screw the second over it, sealing in the vaseline. Now you can carry it around and just pop it on and off at your leisure, permanently keeping that look, or nearly so. If you used magnetic filter rings, you can swap them out REALLY fast, and you have very low chance of getting vaseline where you do not want it.
I’ve been shooting since the 1970 and we used an old UV filter and the Vaseline. Also used pantyhose and a piece of window screen over the lens too. Everything old is new again
Yup. And you could get ready made filters. You could also make one with a UV and the coating made for "professional" Polaroid pictures. But that is permanent, so don't do it with filters you need.
Awesome shots! I thought the street looked famliar at first... i'm like hey.... isn't that my home town hahah. Welcome to Melbourne/Australia! Hope you're having/had a pleasant trip!
Vaseline on the lens was a technique used by photographers before digital photography when everyone shot film. Another technique was to stretch a black or white stocking over the lens.
LOOOOOVE THEM ! I love that they look futuristic ..the combination of the model the location the edits...and of course your technical eye ... is just 🤌🤌🤌🤌
In the old days, when we were on location without Vaseline, we used oil from the skin of our nose applied to the outside of a UV filter for the same effect. Came right off with lens clesner.
Love the idea, and keeping centre clear. Was given a lens baby omni, so have fun adding filters, always try to use in a V shape. I’ve also made some of my own attachments. Work really well backlit and in studio / night using neons. Omni can be a bit of a fiddle. If you get a chance to use, recommend. Worth reaching out to lens baby.
Back in the 70’s, we used to use a cheap filter. 😊 also, if you use a filter, use a water based product ( like KY jelly) because it’s easier to clean off.
LOL. That is such an old school hack from way back. Usually do effects like this in post anymore, but good to know the tricks of the trade are still alive and being explored.
Great job ! It's actually quite an old technique. Georges Lucas did it for shooting a speeder (to hide its wheels and make it look like it was floating) for the very first Star Wars, in 1976. But hey, great to see what you can do with it with photography.
Love it! BUT .. instead of buying an expensive lens plus either an expensive filter or plastic wrap, you could also opt for some vintage lenses. Some give quite that effect for like 20 bucks plus adapter.
Yeah I usually put a radial mask with a high feather over light sources, decrease dehaze, decrease clarity, increase whites a little and maybe saturation. I'd much rather not deal with vaseline and plastic lol
Vaseline or even wiping a little forehead sweat(I know gross) on the lens is how people have been doing this for a while before these filters came out for the mist look as well as capturing flares. I love how far creativity can go. Just keep lens wipes on you and it wont hurt the lens if you do this without the saran wrap.
I admire her passion for Vaseline!!
I decided to become her fan from today
"1 hour is plenty" that's a very dutch thing to say, quick and efficient hahah. Love it! Greetings from your home country
Hahahahaha! Groetjes!
One of your best videos for sure faye !!!
Thank youu! This was definitely a fun one to make 😊

Wauw! That’s also such a good idea 👌
Is there a reason not to just do this in post?

Achieving a look in-camera is always better than in post

Ah wauw! I am so happy to hear that 😊
That means a lot! Definitely go for it 🚀
That was such a sick idea to try out.
Hairspray on an old or cheap filter works awesome as a pro mist filter also. And you can wash it off after re-apply if you wanted more or less.
Usually the model is more beautiful than the photograh ! ❤❤❤❤❤
Similar: Attach a piece of transparent scotch tape to the camera lens in a V shape, ensuring that it does not come into contact with the glass. You can do colors too with a small plastic coloured post-it.
Very sick shoot😋😲😍💘
Cool you are bringing back an old photo hack with the Vaseline. Great video!
So well done video, fun, informative, great edit!
Thank youu!! 🙏🏼
Thanks, I love Fayes!
I have to try this cool idea. Thanks for sharing with us dear!
Good idea Faye! I love that you only applied Vaseline to the corners of the filter and not on the full suffice I haven’t seen this yet
Thank you! I was so surprised by how good it works! 😍
Very cool. Love your work!

So happy I came across your channel. I’m in the middle of my photography course and im so pumped xx
That’s awesome! Good luck, very happy you found my channel🍀
what a great trick from the 80's
I'm amazed the Cling Film doesn't mess up the clarity of the shot in the focused area. Lovely shots
I know right! I think the trick is to get it as tight as possible around the lens. So you barely have any wrinkles 🙌
@@inyourfayes Oh ... I've got plenty of wrinkles!
Wow! Great idea, I'm defenitly trying it at my next photoshoot!
Awesome! Happy to hear you got use out of it 🙌

Stunning shots Faye nice to see you young one’s catching up with the old tricks 🔥🔥🇬🇧😂
Hahahahah! Such a simple trick with the biggest difference 👌

One of your best ideas yet, that effect is so ethereal and pretty!
Thank you! Happy you liked it 🙌

I used to place Vaseline between two old Uv filters. It’s cool to see this stuff making a return.
That’s also smart! Yes I loved testing this one, so much fun 😊
very nice, like the locations!
Thank you! Happy you like them🙌
Great work there faye , what a cool hack . Great insight of how you shoot your shots and a good video big well done. Hope you get the wolf shot .
