Michael thank you for all you do. We were this close to being a cord free, internet only home. Live TV was to have been provided by RUclips TV which I think is perfect. The problem is that my elderly mother who lives with me couldn’t get the hang of it. With regular cable you just turn it on and off like the olden days but with RUclips TV you have to take all these steps to get to it before you can start watching and my mom just couldn’t get the hang of it. If anyone’s reading who can change this we’d be back to RUclips TV in a heartbeat but we went to a very basic Spectrum plan that’s the same price as RUclips TV but only ten cable channels. Rrrrgh.

Thanks, Micheal! I did the research! I asked the wife what she wanted. She's a news freak so I knew we needed cable news. We didn't need sports. So just those two points lead me to sling. I spent about 50 bucks on two Roku(s?) Which came with remotes (only have the IR Roku remote and a sound bar remote to deal with). The Roku smart phone app has a great Bluetooth remote.

Something that I recently did after watching some of your videos is I created a note with different streaming service combinations based on season for sports that I’d like to watch. For example one combination I came up with the NBA season is to do the sling orange and blue combo along with paying for Disney+. Right now with T-Mobile we get Paramount plus for free which covers CBS shows that I like to watch and since we are on the sprint part of T-Mobile we also get Hulu for free as well. When the NBA season is over we plan on switching to a combination of friendly TV along with Disney+ and keeping Hulu/paramount plus for free. As a bonus we also watch the Roku channel too.

I would also add evaluate what channels you really watch, what channels you only sometimes watch & which ones you barely even watch. Because I'm a sports fan I cannot completely get rid of the cable experience (for the lack of a better term) so I had always recommended RUclips TV because of the number of profiles, channel lineup & the unlimited DVR however I always had to have Philo because they had A&E. At first it was fine to have both because there was very little crossover but when YTTV added the Discovery networks I kept having a hard time justifying paying Philo for essentially just one network & the limited DVR on Hulu was a nonstarter. However now that Hulu has an unlimited DVR & gives you Disney+ (which other family members insisted was a must) it just made more financial sense to switch to Hulu with live TV even though I would give up the MLB & NBA networks because they fell in the sometimes category & I also found I was using the PBS app more than YTTV to watch their content anyway.
Another tip is to see what your phone carrier or ISP offers. For example, I honestly wouldn't have Netflix if T-Mobile didn't basically pay for it & the same goes for Peacock.

We cut the cord about a year ago. We have older FireTV box (original) and stick (10 years old), a new Fire Stick, TiVo and regretfully, an Apple TV box (which the cable company talked us into) it totally sucks so , I put it in the guest room 😉 . Anyway, we do not care for 95% of new mainstream programming but do subscribe to a few streaming services including one news source that fulfills our desires. Otherwise, we have downloaded numerous "free" streaming services. It was a slight learning curve but not a problem overall. We used roku once in a hotel and it was OK. We are most satisfied with Fire TV/sticks (the newer works faster) but will never recommend the Apple box. It might be a little different if we subscribed to Apple TV but Apple box does not have internet access app that we often utilize. TiVo is our second favorite. Overall, with internet costing $75 per month plus three streaming services, we are saving about $130 per month and have at least quadruple the viewing options. Spotty over-the-air TV antennas satisfy local programming--most of the antennas are more than 10 years old and work just fine even with a lot of trees. Don't spend a lot of money on the hype, Unless you need to spend the money. I spent $25 on a new antenna and it works the same as the old ones. Retired and loving it.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you switch to JUST internet, be aware of your data usage. I'm a family of 5 with Xfinity, during remote learning AND work from home, we were always on the cusp of going over our internet limit of 1200GB and that's with watching tv with a cable box. I researched cord cutting a while back, the only way to avoid going over my data limit and paying overage fees was to upgrade to unlimited internet usage which made my internet much more expensive.
**I have seen on their website IF you go with their streaming device(free), your internet usage is unlimited. Not sure how that works since their device is like a roku and its free, worth looking into

If you cut the cord and cancel your cable and then get a live streaming service then that's not cord cutting I know y'all want it to me but it's not. Cord cutting is when you get rid of cable TV and live streaming service. Basically getting rid of bundled cable channels bundled live TV channels.

I think there are multiple definitions for cutting the cord, but I definitely recommend not having a live TV service if you don't need it -- saves a lot of money without one!

My cable company had ratcheted my tv, phone and internet bill up to $290/ month. And I never got the internet speed I was paying for. Our neighborhood recently had a new fiber service installed so I ditched cable and now pay $65 for internet and use fubo for our tv service. I chose fubo as my wife is a tennis fanatic and fubo has that plus all the usual local, national networks and other stuff we need. I use an ooma service for house phone. My total monthly cost is now $140/ month. We could choose either 100, 500, or 1000 mbps. The fiber guys said 100 mbps was plenty for our needs. He was right. I use Amazon Fire sticks on existing TVs and my wife has a new Fire TV in the bedroom. I have an Apple TV box in the living room. I feed the fiber service into a new eero 6+ mesh wi fi. So easy to set up. Everything works gangbusters and never outages and slow downs like cable company. I get 98 mbps upload and download readings without fail. I am saving $150/month. Cable called my to ask why I changed. I replied …. Lousy service, never getting speed I paid for, TV outages and rediculous price. They offered to give me $80/month phone and internet. I said no thanks as I know they would ratchet it back up and their internet speed history was bad. My new fiber service is price fixed forever. I can adjust my app choices on my computer any time, instantly. I am nearly 80 yrs old and I had no problems doing all this. You should see the pile of cables, amplifiers and cable boxes I have turfed out!

I'll never buy a Roku device again. Roku is like the Comcast of streaming. Horrible customer service. They push out untested software updates that break devices. They made antenna watching with a Roku tv almost unusable. Customers complain, Roku doesn't care. They don't make any money from you watching antenna tv. You're not the customer. You're the product being sold (as demographic information, carriage fees).

Streaming comes naturally for gen Z, millennials and the majority of Gen Xers, the problem is with a good portion of boomers who have a hard time extricating themselves from traditional cable boxes and the simplicity they offer, with a live channel guide and one stop consumption station and a single remote. I guarantee you lost most boomers by the time you mentioned HDMI. Most boomers have their children or paid professionals hook stuff up for them and they "just want it to work" anything beyond that is too much work, trust me I've tried helping a few and it's a steep hill to climb. A lot of the terms and devices you mention in your video need to be defined for this crowd before you even wade into explaining which is the best choice. Once you start mentioning subscriptions and keeping up with login information for multiple subscriptions it's over.

I agree with you for the most part! I do try to explain things in a simple way and have a beginner's guide for cord cutters. But since my channel serves not only first-time streamers, I can't stop and define HDMI in every single video. But I hope the visual in this video helped some people get the point. If my tutorials are unhelpful, hopefully it will inspire them to ask the children or paid professionals as you noted.

Not being butt hurt or anything 😁, but I'm a proud son of the GREATEST GENERATION, who has fully embraced streaming in order to save money.
I still prefer the cable experience, but prices FORCED me to drop them in exchange for streaming.
I occasionally run into an issue, but I am always able to solve them.
My mother, on the other hand pretty much personified the confusion you're talking about.
I gave her a new tv for Christmas about 5 years before she died, and she was never able to fully grasp how to operate it.
The technological leap for many in her generation was just too great for them to handle at their age and life experiences.
I knew better than to try to expose her to the internet.
She would have been completely overwhelmed.

Prefer Firestick. Can sideload apps and watch websites. We like free apps for local news. MLB TV app usually has a free game of the day. Apple TV has MLB free on Fridays. RUclips has some free games too. We watch TV shows and movies on websites for free. Sometimes we get free trials for showtime and others. We set up Kodi and Tivimate.
