We did exactly what you mentioned. Ironically we aren't saving a whole lot but we have more options and more freedom. Xfinity was charging way too much for less service. We even negotiated on our internet and also made sure there are no data caps.
We been doing this since 2012. Ten years. Also add a yagi hd antenna with a separate signal Amp for free local channels. Don't get an antenna with a built-in Amp because electronics don't last long outside and when it goes so does your antenna. Mouse pad antenna are ok for rental properties. You will have to move the antenna around to find the peak signal and rescan your TV a few times but the savings is worth it.
@Dc A-N-D-Y Paying $35 a month. You can download a free app on the Roku called Locast that lets you watch local channels for seeing local sports. I get the NFL network with the Sling Blue option. I'm able to find some free sports channels, but they are like college basketball and soccer games. I only watch football.
Sling is a waste of money. Just like most streaming services they don't offer any movies that you couldn't get for free somewhere else. If you want movies checkout the Roku channel or just get a DVD player and a library card, or sign up for Amazon Prime. Amazon prime has the same fee less movies as everyone else but you also get free shipping on online orders for only $125 per year.
Hi Michael, Love your channel. Great info! I haven't had cable since the early 2000's. I use an Antenna for local Digital Broadcast and a Roku, Amazon Fire TV box and Apple TV if I want to watch anything on an Actual TV set. It's nice that all of these streaming services can be watched on a Laptop, Tablet or Smart phone.
I live in rural area and our only internet provider is our local independent phone company. We have had the same 8 Mbps plan for 10 years now and it still works for all of our needs. Three of us on our phones using wi-fi along with streaming through Roku at the same time and rarely does it lag or buffer. We subscribe to 6 streaming services and use them a lot so luckily our provider offers unlimited data and no throttling.
I just cut the cord completely yesterday. Direct TV prices are ridiculous for what I really need it for. Literally 3 channels and local channels (which I’m using Locast for). But I think I need a better streaming device because Firestick is just too laggy for me. I’m thinking of this Roku you mention here. I do have Apple TV box in the living room, but those are real pricey
When you sign up for trials go into the account service page asap and just cancel it so you don't forget as it will remain active until the expiration of the trial as people forget all the time.

A couple additional things I would include is to check if you can get local TV with an antenna. If so, you don't need a streaming service that includes it if you want local channels. You can also get a streaming box for the antenna, and get the local stations on all your streaming devices, plus your mobile phone and tablet. Plus, you can DVR local TV from an antenna with many of these devices. And also look at the various streaming apps for some of the networks. Many of those are free, and will show the latest episodes a day or week after they first air. When I first cut the cord, I found the History Channel app had the last 5 episodes of "Vikings" (which was the only show I really watched on that channel) for free, so I didn't have to worry about a streaming TV service that included that channel. And Peacock (free basic service) has SNL a week after it first airs (higher tiers that you pay for have it next day). Last, don't forget to check with your cable TV provider to see if they have streaming services that might fit your needs. I was with Spectrum, and found that if you have Internet through them, you could get a streaming service for $15 a month that was pretty similar to Philo.
These are great tips and things I agree with 100%! But I made this beginner's guide simple for a reason -- there are so many choices. Once people make the first step, they can take the second. And the antenna tip is a very good one because it will maximize savings!
This was a very excellent video. I am definitely going to cut the cord. My basic cable and Internet has gone up 100%. I am going to get RUclips TV. Do I need to have AT&T or someone else for my Internet provider or could I just use Roku?
You will use more data with streaming. Most people stay under the cap (if they have a cap), but something to monitor. Log in to your ISP and see how much data you're using now against the cap!

I have a new TV in the basement for direct streaming but watch my upstairs/older TV most often. Do I need a Roku to watch upstairs even if I "set up" my streaming account on the newer TV?
I have cut the cord I have had you tube tv and I decided to cut you tube tv now I need to find a better option. I do pat for you tube premium and been watching some of my favorite stuff on there.
Not if the smart TV has all of your favorite apps on its interface. I like getting a Roku anyway because there are more apps available, but your smart TV may have you covered. Up to you!

Sounds like you already have things up and running! I recommend that people use a streaming device instead of the TV’s platform usually, but that’s an option. What matters is that you can access all of your apps!

Sure, I can add to my list. Ethernet is usually faster and closer to the speed that you're paying for. But Wi-Fi is simple and you can connect to various types of devices wirelessly.
Thanks for easy to understand reasons to cut the cable. Just one more question though as I have both an amazon stick with remote and a roku . With three tv's which one should I use to set up you tube and is it necessary to take the remote to whichever tv you are using???
Ideally you want one streaming stick per TV, but if you have a smart TV check to see if your favorite apps are available straight from the TV interface. Or just buy a third stick on sale. Then just keep the remote in the room with the TV where you connected the stick. RUclips is available on both Roku and Fire TV, same with RUclips TV. Happy streaming!
Great info. I have the Samsung Frame TV, which has the cords hidden in the wall. The TV is brand new. Would I be able to expedite Roku/RUclips TV without having to worry about exposing the new Roku cord? In other words, set it up with plugging anything new in?
If you have a Samsung Frame TV, you can use the Samsung interface instead of a Roku if you don't want to deal with any more cords. The RUclips TV app is on your Samsung.

What's your internet speed? Is it possible that your bedroom is far away from the modem/router? You could purchase a cheap Wi-Fi range extender. That helped at my mother's house where the primary bedroom is on the opposite side of the house where the modem/router is located.
Great video Michael but I have a question. My TV doesn't support You Tube TV as it is 1 yr. too old. I will purchase Roku or the Firestick so I can try You Tube tv out. Do I disconnect the Comcast plug that fits into the HDM1 outlet which connects to the Comcast cable box so I can plug in Roku during this trial period.

The new Chromecast is an AWESOME device. I use it every day. It doesn't have as many apps as Roku, but it has the major ones and you can always play content from your phone or computer to your TV set. store.google.com/us/product/chromecast_google_tv
I have a Roku or another device (Fire TV, Chromecast) for each TV. If you have a smart TV, many apps may be preinstalled. You don't necessarily need a Roku then, but you'll find a Roku is easier to use. For example, I have a Samsung TV. Many apps are installed are available, but the Samsung remote is difficult to use compared to a Roku or another streaming stick.
In Australia, we have a cable service called Foxtel. I only really use it for watching sports and pro wrestling. The cost for the basic package and the sport add on is $75 a month. Luckily, Foxtel has a sports streaming service called Kayo which is only $25 a month and it gives you all of the same sports that are already on Foxtel, including the weekly wrestling shows like Raw, Smackdown and NXT

I recommend one Roku per TV set so you don't have to move the Roku between rooms. Now if you have a Samsung or LG smart TV, you could use the operating system already on your TV set -- but it's a better experience with a Roku, Fire TV Stick, etc.

Hello. I have a question. I’m exploring options to cut the big boys off, however, when I stream from my PC I get severe lag or mouth doesn’t match words. What do I need to upgrade to resolve this?
Have you checked your internet connection? Try Speedtest.net. Focus on the download speed and the ping/latency. Then, call up your internet service provider and tell them the results. If the ping is too high, it could lead to those issues.
Tip, if you have a modestly priced 4k tv, the NVidia Shield in tube form has a graphics card in it and will increase the upscaling and picture quality significantly to make super hd look more like 4k, it is 150 dollars though but a great android device that runs them all, also very fast.
I want to watch Texas Rangers Baseball from FoxSportSouthwest. How do I do that? I have an indoor TV Antenna & Roku device. Is that all I need & how do I set it up?

You can get a good modem/router combo for around $100 to $150. Start your internet provider and get their list of compatible modem/router combos. Then, maybe check reviews of the models on Amazon. If your internet plan has 100 Mbps or around that, it should be fine for several devices!
Hi Michael, I'm on a RUclips TV trial using a flat screen (non-smart) TV with Roku and am having a few issues that seem direly wrong. > Whenever changing channels, it's requiring entering an access code on a computer or wireless device to sign into the channels. > It's also requiring adding an app for each channel. > A football game was allegedly being recorded and saved to the video library. When played back, it only showed snippets of a few highlights. > One channel that's supposed to be included offers a Free Trial. It's like the system doesn't even know I'm a user! This has been an extremely frustrating experience 😡. At this point, the trial runs out this weekend. I will have to renew Verizon for another month until I find a workable solution. Any insights on what could be wrong and how to correct would be deeply appreciated.

Great video. Only thing I would add is monitor your internet data usage. Cutting the cord and streaming ALL your tv needs through your internet will likely have an impact on your data usage. Comcast for example has a data cap of 1.2 TB. It is possible (though for most probably unlikely) that you may go over that cap and incur additional fees should you choose to stream ALL of your tv services. Comcast does have an unlimited data option for an additional 30.00 a month. For Comcast users you can check your usage through the website or the app on your phone or tablet.
Hi Michael, great video. I like the idea of going to RUclips TV, it seems like it can be a very easy transition. Currently, I have ChromeCast (built-in) into the TV in the family room, and since I already have a Google Chromecast device for a second TV, do I need a Roku Premiere or can I get away without it? Also, I have standalone subscriptions with Amazon Prime, MLB Channel, Disney Plus/Hulu & Netflix (and MIcrosoft Office) is there a way I can purchase them in a bundle to save further. Hi Rick. I have an updated video with my 2022 advice here: ruclips.net/video/OD3Xw9dmriM/видео.html. To answer your questions, no you don't need a new Roku. (I now recommend the newer Roku Express 4K+, not Premiere.) But you can use the Chromecast devices you already have and they'll work great with RUclips TV. I don't know of any way to bundle the other subscriptions that you have, unfortunately. But RUclips TV will take care of the live TV piece.
Here's what we like about cable is the menu and the E-Z guide. Amazon fire stick, Apple TV, Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers. Otherwise, it's feels like you're blindfolded and you just pick any random program and waste your time.
Cable company's dont care because they just raise their prices on internet, and no one can do anything about it as long as they have no real competition.
I went from 8 satellite receivers to now only 3 receivers. Negotiating a better price for the channels I do have. With the food and gas ⛽️ prices higher than ever it’s time to rethink my spending on everything.

Yes those are good alternatives to Roku. For now you can access RUclips TV through the main Roku app. I have a video on that. So if you already have a Roku try that !
I’m about to do it got and love the RUclips TV and got TiVo remotes for my non smart tvs now the problem is getting a human on the phone to disconnect it’s almost impossible I might do a RUclips about disconnecting how impossible it is with Verizon Fios to talk to a human.
Put up a UHF/VHF antenna and watching what’s already free to view? No fees no internet no boxes: just connect the tv with the antenna. Less channels but no fixed expenses

Your interest provider should have a list online of compatible gateways. I would just research them on Amazon. The one I bought was $100, a Motorola. Works great.
The best thing to do is contact your internet service provider and ask them. They may have a list online of compatible modem/router combos - they’re often called gateways. Mine was about $100.
I currently have direct tv been with them for yours now I've been looking on the internet but can't find a straight answer if I would pay an etf for canceling because I heard that you may get auto enrolled once your contract expires.

My father cut the cord with spectrum in 2019. He was paying $185 a month for TV and internet, and that was getting to be pretty expensive. And he only had 1 DVR. He had spectrum from 2017-2019.

The ones that have a router and modem are often referred to as gateways. The one I referenced in that video was $100 and worked great. But some more expensive ones could get you faster speeds. Depends on the internet plan you're paying for. Good luck.
This is just my how to guide for beginners! Glad you found something you like. I have Fire TV, Chromecast, Roku and others. They all have pros and cons! I was keeping it simple for beginners.
@@metal1mark73 TiVo Stream 4K is great. Surprised me. However, I got the Chromecast With Google TV (it has a remote) shortly after and prefer that. Similar interface. The Chromecast remote is smaller. But if you like Amazon, no need to switch away. It’s good too.
Comcast has Portland Trail Blazers fans by the cahones. The only channel you can watch them on comes from xfinity except for nationally broadcast games which are rare.
I think if you're not a sports fan you can easily cut the cord...but if your a sports fan you probably don't have a choice...since the only way to get regional sports is through your cable/satellite providers.

As of February 13, 2021, THE CORD IS CUT! Xfinity is still overcharging me for internet, but my bill is one-third of what it used to be. Thank you!!

When I first cut the cord, I found the History Channel app had the last 5 episodes of "Vikings" (which was the only show I really watched on that channel) for free, so I didn't have to worry about a streaming TV service that included that channel. And Peacock (free basic service) has SNL a week after it first airs (higher tiers that you pay for have it next day). Last, don't forget to check with your cable TV provider to see if they have streaming services that might fit your needs. I was with Spectrum, and found that if you have Internet through them, you could get a streaming service for $15 a month that was pretty similar to Philo.
These are great tips and things I agree with 100%! But I made this beginner's guide simple for a reason -- there are so many choices. Once people make the first step, they can take the second. And the antenna tip is a very good one because it will maximize savings!

As of October 2021 Roku no longer supports the RUclips TV app. Therefore, I went with Chromecast. Really enjoy the extra features it’s got. 🙋🏻♀️

Does streaming which uses the internet affect your Data cap?
You will use more data with streaming. Most people stay under the cap (if they have a cap), but something to monitor. Log in to your ISP and see how much data you're using now against the cap!

I have a new TV in the basement for direct streaming but watch my upstairs/older TV most often. Do I need a Roku to watch upstairs even if I "set up" my streaming account on the newer TV?

Roku is free. If you mean Roku TV that is also free unless you opt to add the premium channels such as HBO or Showtime.

I watch regular RUclips, netflix and prime on both of them. Do I need the streaming device for my just for the Sony TV?
Sounds like you already have things up and running! I recommend that people use a streaming device instead of the TV’s platform usually, but that’s an option. What matters is that you can access all of your apps!

Sure, I can add to my list. Ethernet is usually faster and closer to the speed that you're paying for. But Wi-Fi is simple and you can connect to various types of devices wirelessly.
Thanks for easy to understand reasons to cut the cable. Just one more question though as I have both an amazon stick with remote and a roku . With three tv's which one should I use to set up you tube and is it necessary to take the remote to whichever tv you are using???
Ideally you want one streaming stick per TV, but if you have a smart TV check to see if your favorite apps are available straight from the TV interface. Or just buy a third stick on sale. Then just keep the remote in the room with the TV where you connected the stick. RUclips is available on both Roku and Fire TV, same with RUclips TV. Happy streaming!
Great info. I have the Samsung Frame TV, which has the cords hidden in the wall. The TV is brand new. Would I be able to expedite Roku/RUclips TV without having to worry about exposing the new Roku cord? In other words, set it up with plugging anything new in?
If you have a Samsung Frame TV, you can use the Samsung interface instead of a Roku if you don't want to deal with any more cords. The RUclips TV app is on your Samsung.

What's your internet speed? Is it possible that your bedroom is far away from the modem/router? You could purchase a cheap Wi-Fi range extender. That helped at my mother's house where the primary bedroom is on the opposite side of the house where the modem/router is located.
Great video Michael but I have a question. My TV doesn't support You Tube TV as it is 1 yr. too old. I will purchase Roku or the Firestick so I can try You Tube tv out. Do I disconnect the Comcast plug that fits into the HDM1 outlet which connects to the Comcast cable box so I can plug in Roku during this trial period.
For the Roku, you plug into an HDMI on the back of your TV. Does your TV have only one HDMI input? Most have 2 or sometimes even 3!

I have a Roku or another device (Fire TV, Chromecast) for each TV. If you have a smart TV, many apps may be preinstalled. You don't necessarily need a Roku then, but you'll find a Roku is easier to use. For example, I have a Samsung TV. Many apps are installed are available, but the Samsung remote is difficult to use compared to a Roku or another streaming stick.

In Australia, we have a cable service called Foxtel. I only really use it for watching sports and pro wrestling. The cost for the basic package and the sport add on is $75 a month. Luckily, Foxtel has a sports streaming service called Kayo which is only $25 a month and it gives you all of the same sports that are already on Foxtel, including the weekly wrestling shows like Raw, Smackdown and NXT

I recommend one Roku per TV set so you don't have to move the Roku between rooms. Now if you have a Samsung or LG smart TV, you could use the operating system already on your TV set -- but it's a better experience with a Roku, Fire TV Stick, etc.

Have you checked your internet connection? Try Speedtest.net. Focus on the download speed and the ping/latency. Then, call up your internet service provider and tell them the results. If the ping is too high, it could lead to those issues.

Tip, if you have a modestly priced 4k tv, the NVidia Shield in tube form has a graphics card in it and will increase the upscaling and picture quality significantly to make super hd look more like 4k, it is 150 dollars though but a great android device that runs them all, also very fast.

AT&T TV has that network. Most streaming services do not. You can use your Roku with AT&T TV.

Correct. As long as your smart TV’s interface has all the apps you want. Many of them don’t. That’s another reason why people get a Roku.

You can get a good modem/router combo for around $100 to $150. Start your internet provider and get their list of compatible modem/router combos. Then, maybe check reviews of the models on Amazon. If your internet plan has 100 Mbps or around that, it should be fine for several devices!

Hi Michael, I'm on a RUclips TV trial using a flat screen (non-smart) TV with Roku and am having a few issues that seem direly wrong.

Great video. Only thing I would add is monitor your internet data usage. Cutting the cord and streaming ALL your tv needs through your internet will likely have an impact on your data usage. Comcast for example has a data cap of 1.2 TB. It is possible (though for most probably unlikely) that you may go over that cap and incur additional fees should you choose to stream ALL of your tv services. Comcast does have an unlimited data option for an additional 30.00 a month. For Comcast users you can check your usage through the website or the app on your phone or tablet.

Currently, I have ChromeCast (built-in) into the TV in the family room, and since I already have a Google Chromecast device for a second TV, do I need a Roku Premiere or can I get away without it? (I now recommend the newer Roku Express 4K+, not Premiere.) But you can use the Chromecast devices you already have and they'll work great with RUclips TV. I don't know of any way to bundle the other subscriptions that you have, unfortunately. But RUclips TV will take care of the live TV piece.

Hi Jim. RUclips TV comes with unlimited cloud DVR, so you don't need separate equipment. Hulu Live, Sling TV and the others also have cloud DVR.

Cable company's dont care because they just raise their prices on internet, and no one can do anything about it as long as they have no real competition.

Yes those are good alternatives to Roku. For now you can access RUclips TV through the main Roku app. I have a video on that. So if you already have a Roku try that !
I’m about to do it got and love the RUclips TV and got TiVo remotes for my non smart tvs now the problem is getting a human on the phone to disconnect it’s almost impossible I might do a RUclips about disconnecting how impossible it is with Verizon Fios to talk to a human.
Put up a UHF/VHF antenna and watching what’s already free to view? No fees no internet no boxes: just connect the tv with the antenna. Less channels but no fixed expenses

Your interest provider should have a list online of compatible gateways. I would just research them on Amazon. The one I bought was $100, a Motorola. Works great.

My father cut the cord with spectrum in 2019. He was paying $185 a month for TV and internet, and that was getting to be pretty expensive. And he only had 1 DVR. He had spectrum from 2017-2019.

Firestick 4k is better than the Roku stick! You can do more with the Firestick 4k.

@@metal1mark73 TiVo Stream 4K is great. Surprised me. However, I got the Chromecast With Google TV (it has a remote) shortly after and prefer that. Similar interface. The Chromecast remote is smaller. But if you like Amazon, no need to switch away. It’s good too.
Comcast has Portland Trail Blazers fans by the cahones. The only channel you can watch them on comes from xfinity except for nationally broadcast games which are rare.
I think if you're not a sports fan you can easily cut the cord...but if your a sports fan you probably don't have a choice...since the only way to get regional sports is through your cable/satellite providers.
