The decline in hair dressers is saddening but not surprising. Trade jobs are in high demand and it's only getting worse, and a good part of this is due to millennials and early gen z having the "you must go to college or you'll only ever work at McDonald's for the rest of your life" ideas shoved down their throat. As an over-educated millennial, the job market is sh!t. It took me three (3) years to get a job that somewhat uses my degree, and I still don't make livable wage. I work at a college, so I see these young adults with this mentality. It's not all of them, but I think it's more prevalent now than it was when I, a young millennial (seriously I'm the last year before the gen z switch) was in high school/college. People know their worth when it comes to a job, which is great and they should. But something I've noticed is a lot of the current group of young adults/older teens expect to go right into whatever their lifelong job will be. No one is considering entry level positions, but that's what they need to get the better paying jobs.
I also think the rise in "get rich quick" social media plays a big role in how younger people (god I sound so old) approach employment. They aren't thinking about entry level positions, they want the job that is going to make them the most money the fastest. And I get it. At least in the US, we're on the brink of another recession, everything is expensive, and everyone wants financial security. Hell, I want that. But learning a trade and accumulating experience takes time--years, in fact. And it's possible to build on that entry level position and move up the chain of command in whatever position they're in. People have standards for jobs--and they should! But the focus is less on the long term and more on the "right now."
Tl;dr: trade jobs are in high demand, the job market sucks, and younger gen z is stuck between a rock and a hard place 90% of the time, corporations need to pay their employees livable wage

I'm also an over-educated millenial in a min wage job market (paramedic) that has to spend *literally thousands upon thousands on initial certification then recert every other year (which are no longer tax deductible thanks to the administration before last...). But we're no where near a recession- the economy is actually sky rocketing and fed interest finally budged for the first time in years. Ehh... I don't want to jinx anything in case things go orange next month 😭

I got licensed as a hairstyist (specialized in color/nail tech/esthetician/Mua back in the early 1990's. I relocated to a different state that wouldn't transfer my licenses unless I went back to school and got more hours!
After being out of school for a long time and having worked in salons I had zero desire to go back to school *again* and even if I did want to, relocating took all we had financially just to move for my husband's job. So I couldn't afford to go back, I had to immediately get a job in a new city. That led me to working in a different (imho better) salon environment... With dogs!
I have to say, I prefer dogs as clients. My experience with scissors and clippers made dog grooming academy a breeze. I actually specialize in really fancy scissor cuts on standard poodles. Better yet, I have my own private salon now and I've never been happier.
As someone who worked a long time as a hairstyist/MUA/esthetician, I'm glad I had that experience but nothing could make me go back to it. I love my four legged clients 🐾 plus now all the makeup I do is just for fun on here. 😂

As a hairdresser, I don't blame people for not wanting to do this job. I've been at it for 3 years. Don't get me wrong, I TRULY love where I work, who I work with, and the job I do- BUT, I also had to spend thousands on schooling, pay to take the test to get licensed and pay every other year to keep up that license, which for my state the price has doubled, if not tripled, the past few years, and buy all my own things: shears, blow dryer, brushes, combs, clips, all of it. All that to make pretty much minimum wage. So I'm not surprised there is a crisis and if it won't soon be happening in the U.S. Thanks for the wonderful video James 😘

I for one, love the work that you and your fellow hairdressers do. I know that people think it’s all glamorous, but in reality it’s 8-10 hours of standing and getting hair all over you after like you said, paying a lot of money to go to school and get the license. By any means of the word, hairdressing is a profession and the pay and benefits you receive SHOULD reflect on that.
I just want to say that I really appreciate that hairdressers exist 😍

My back is shot, I have no retirement, and after 20 years, Covid crippled me, so I started back working where I did 25 years ago. Customer care, WFH, and sit behind a desk. I don't know anyone who thinks it's glamorous. My general perception of hairdressing is that it's a high risk, high skill, low page job with limited opportunity for advancement. Most hairdressers I know are trying to leave the field due to poor treatment and low pay (not dissimilar to nursing in some ways). Not sure I've ever heard of it as a glamourous job!

Wow. As a woman in a big US city, I pay ~$125 - 150 minimum each time I get a haircut. This has caused me to cut back on how frequently I go to the salon: I used to go three times/year. In fact, I haven't been in two years because every time I go, the price seems to have increased by $25 - $50. If you move to a big city, you may make more money but it will probably be eaten up by high housing costs. Sorry you are not making good money. It is a great skill to have, imho.

I also have my cosmetology license and I have a very different experience. Compared to other career paths, getting into the beauty industry is rather affordable & can be done in a reasonable amount of time & presents people with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs & business owners with a large growth potential. Some of my friends make wellllllll into 6 figures as hair dressers, bridal hair or makeup, without hefty student loans or a college degree. My cosmetology license is like $75 every other year to maintain - which for me, is rather affordable. My schooling took about one year & my loans total about $6k which I paid off in a lump sum after about a year. I've seen other degrees or licenses that are triple or quadruple the cost. Almost every licensee regardless of industry has to pay for their license - real estate, nurses, etc. so I don't see why cos would be any different. And in grand scheme, cos is very affordable. I think it's a shame that the industry is losing its spark - although in the US, in NJ/NYC, I don't see that as the case. It feels like the industry has soooo many new faces and talents! I honestly think it's a great career - it's a great license. You can make a very considerable living & enjoy what you do. I love my clients, I love playing with their faces & skin, I love going to trainings with different skincare brands, etc. I have so much fun every day. And it was relatively easy, all things considered, to get here.
Also, if you're stuck at minimum wage, try diversifying your skills. Maybe specialize in extensions, blonding, color correction? I tip my hairdresser like minimum $80. That could be an extra $400-500 a day, cash. Provide luxury or specialty services - there is a clientele, they spend a lot of money & they tip. I promise you can make a lot of money with your cos license. Hydrafacial pricing parameters require our spa to charge $230 for one signature treatment & I can guarantee at least 4 clients per shift. People still spend money on these services !!

My hairstylist closed her salon at the beginning of the year. Her main problem was that the cost of high quality products skyrocketed, which meant she had to charge her clients more. Many of them complained about the cost of her services and opted to either find another stylist or follow a tutorial on RUclips and do it themselves. The other problem was that people saw altered pictures on social media and had unrealistic expectations about the real results (such as going from box-dyed black hair to platinum blonde in one session, or bright fantasy colors that don't last). Plus, she said that standing all day was ruining her body.

In her chair I could talk about anything and everything and she would listen and empathize...we would laugh and I could even let me cry a little if I needed to. I tipped very well and always gifted her with a bit extra at Christmas to make sure she knew how much she was appreciated. She was as much a friend as a service provider. She retired a year ago and although we still have lunch together from time to time I have not been to a hair salon since, because it just isn't the same. Then again, neither am I. 😂🤣😂

Specializing in things like blonding, extensions, color correction, bridal, etc. help diversify & bring in a clientele for luxury services. Maybe branch out of "super cuts" as that really is the bare minimum job. (Not to take away stylists working there) That's like choosing to work at a Wendy's over a Michelin restaurant. Where you work attracts your clientele which determines your price point & income.

The average ~30k per year, while certainly better than nothing, isn't enough to live off of. A basic wash and go is around $200 CAD give or take at a curly hair salon. I'm not aware of a regular normal cheap or affordable place that knows how to do my hair. And that's just my own hair not getting braids or whatever.

A personal take on the hairdressing issue in the UK, I trained in 2012-2014 and all I remember is it being drilled into the students that the industry is difficult to get your start in "there's too many training and graduating at the same time fighting for the same jobs" salons popping up in my town - we have a ridiculous amount for a small town - expecting 3+ years of salon experience and not giving opportunities for those just graduating (I understand you want the best for your salon, but no one was willing to take on newbies and help them grow) I don't think anyone from my class actually has a career in hairdressing now, everyone has moved on to other career options, customers nowaday want everything for as cheap as possible and will find cheaper options, whether that's mobile hairdressers or at home kits/RUclips tutorial haircuts... I can totally see why it's a declining trade

This will create an ebb and flow in the industry that will allow for different ppl to explore the profession and people in different professions in the UK, may be changing careers. Nannies, housekeepers, Retail clerks might want to look into hairdressing now that the young ones aren’t chomping at the bit for all the jobs

To be honest, I don't have the money for a hair salon. I live in northern europe and just for a simple cut and a bit of color (nothing special), I pay at least 150 Eur. Not at the cheapeat salon, but a normal one where the people are payed at least okay.
If I do it myself, I spend 20Eur for the same hair dye and another 20Eur for scissors twice a year.

Darling I really recomend get a pair of scissors actually made for cutting hair. I don’t know what kind of scissors you use and what else you use them for, but I’ve had the same pair of hair scissors from the supermarket for the last 5-10 years. A great sewing trick is to take a bit of aluminium aluminium foil and cut through it with your somewhat dull scissors to extend their lifespan.

I don't know if the numbers are low in Japan, but Japan has too few people to do any jobs right now, but here it is common for hairdressers to open up a salon in the first floor of their home, after the necessary apprenticeship ofc, often building the home and salon from scratch. This way the cost is so much lower that it is considered quite a lucrative career if you have the skills and knowledge to run it well.

Yeah, I was gonna say, we’re short on people who cut hair here in Seattle as well. The cost of renting a chair, the lack of hair dressers, and every one already trying to make ends meet, makes haircuts here in Seattle expensive. You can easily drop $140 just on a basic cut and style, and it’s always hit or miss with a hairdresser.

It can be a fun and creative job. Like most professions, enjoying it can depend on your coworkers, at times. If you work in a good salon and enjoy the work, you’ll like it. The aspect I caution people on is that some of the clients will overshare. Sometimes I feel like a therapist who does hair during a session lol.

Britain known for its hair styling/cutting???? Maybe on a generalised level however whenever anyone goes to the hairdressers now the hairdressers always mess up or ignore the customers or only do their job half assed or are just plain rude. I'm not surprised people don't want that sort of job. I've seen so many gen zer's cutting their own hair now or gen X parents cutting their children's hair. Understandably the prices are rising and it's difficult because of The cost of living. I know a girl who did a hairdresser apprenticeship instead of A levels but I feel like because there's so much pressure on "doing a levels otherwise you're dumb and jobless" that after them people aren't that interested in hairstyling because they want to put their subjects to a "better" use. I do feel like many (especially parents) don't see it as a real career so kids are drawn away from the idea which needs to change. Also my hairdresser is retiring soon so I'll have to find another

However I was lucky enough to find a salon that treated me with respect when I was about to quit. That being said I am glad I did stick it out, because this career has been able to give me a life that I would never thought attainable before, however it does come with a lot of sacrifices at times just like any other career.

I love reading comments, you learn so much. I didn't know the price of hair products sky rocketed which is why the prices had. I used to get my hair, which is a quick dry trim on my naturally straight and fine hair, done for about £10 and now it is £75 for the same thing. I just have a straight line cut with some framing. So, as a result, I do not go often. This is without a wash or style. It's £75 because my hair is long, not priced on the type of cut. £55 is the cheapest and for shorter hair, which arguably is a little more difficult if it is a style they are working with to trim. I'm in and out the salon in 25mins. My husband gets his hair done for £15 which takes almost 1 hour and is very technical with blending, trimming, styling, and all.
I know the stylists need the money, and I'm sorry I am not providing it anymore... I don't cut my hair at home though, I just let it get to a point it gets caught on things 😅😂
I did a course at school, part of a BTec, on hairdressing so most of the time my husband wants me to cut his hair. I think this scheme actually no longer exists. From that course I think 3 girls went on to hairdressing and still do it.

Even balyage was more easy than people tried to make out. My sister and I did mine from a tutorial with box dye. The next time I paid for a cut the hairdresser heavily complimented my colour and how healthy my hair was the asked where I had it done.
When I said it was my sister she was asking what salon she works at lol. She was suddenly unimpressed when she realized it was a home job and talked about how bad it is to use box dye for the rest of the appointment.
Hair can be an art for sure but it's really not that deep. Ever since the first sharpened tools dropped people have been figuring out how to cut their hair in cute ways. It grows back.

Good evening James. Really enjoyed this episode. Re skin cancer. Cautionary tale. At some point when I about 10 or 11, a mole appeared on my cheek area. My family doctor kept an eye on it. As it grew, my MD sent me to plastic surgeon because my mD was not going remove it from a girl's face. The PS advised to wait as it may stop growth. Saw PS @ 16 to 19. At 20, mole changed shape, colour and size. Just one of these meant time to remove but this was treated as emergency. It was removed under local and while no pain, i felt everything. It took along while to scrape out the 'roots'. Yick. So, keep an eye on your moles because it just might save your health or your life. Be well. Enjoy your day. 🥸🥰
