Good video. Seiko dropped the ball on the new 5KX. Thats why the watch nerds are grabbing up the original SKX models. The original models are beautiful in their 20th century simplicity.
I was looking to get one a while ago, but then I realized the newer models didn't have the power reserve, which was my biggest draw to it... Ended up getting a kamasu instead.
@@Jollopukki2 I know, but it's a bit cheaper than the triton, has pretty much the same specs, without the bonus of the power reserve I didn't really see much reason to put down more cash for the triton.
They were good in their time but not any more. I'm so glad you made this video. I've only been into watches for about 3 years and never understood the craze around the SKX.
The Skx007 was my first mechanical watch purchased for $180. After purchasing a Hamilton and Tissot, I purchased the 009 for $190. This was my collection for several years until the purchase of a Breitling Colt 41 and last year a Rolex Ex1. I truly love my Skxs and they will never be sold.
The 7002 came out in the 80's. The case was actually fashioned after the first slim turtles 6309-7290. But unlike the SKX, the slim turtles have a true 4 o'clock crown position up to the first generation 7002, had a 60 click bidirectional bezel, and crystal was set differently thus having only 150m water resistance. The second gen 7002 had basically the same SKX case configuration from how the crystal sets, 120 unidirectional bezel, and a 3:48 crown.
@@BraveBeaters Have a look at the review from just one more watch.. he says that the seestern is better than the real deal. Well, as my father has both of them I can tell that the quality is very similar
Are the old Rolex Submariners worth the money if you are just buying a watch? Hell no, you are buying an icon with history. The SKX is not worth the money if you are just buying a watch but if you are wanting something with history then yes it is worth it. The SKX is an Icon!
Just get a Citizen NY0040 for under 200bucks - it has handwinding+hacking (now with an updated movement), wears better than the SKX imo (a bit smaller and with a 20mm lug width), and has arguably more history - it was in fact used by the italian navy. The "history" on the SKX is purely hype based, basically. Nothing wrong with the SKX, I love it and I have owned both the Seiko and the Citizen. But at this point, it's not worth the money people are asking for. It's doesn't even hack or handwind and people want 500+ for them, jesus. Not to even mention the fakes and frankensteins going around. Not worth the risk imo. You can also get a Ray II, a Kamasu, the newer Seiko 5s, whatever...all under 200, and all arguably better than the SKX.
@@canadianwatchmonkey3992 Like I said, the Citizen arguably has more history and is more of an "icon" than the SKX. It was actually used by the navy for many years and it was actually tested to 500m, etc. It is a living proof of an actual tool, used professionally, making actual "history". Why would you consider the SKX an icon? Purely because it was hyped by the community, being classified as one of the best affordable diver's watch in the market. That's basically it, and there's nothing wrong with that. BUT that's long gone. It was in fact one of the best affordable diver's watches, but it just isn't anymore. Even if was still available, it wouldn't be with the specs it had. The SKX time is long gone imo. I can easily name 5+ watches better, at under 200 bucks, that have better specs, wear much better on wrist, from equally respected brands. But I can obviously respect if someone wants it and is willing to spend the money people are asking currently. Nothing wrong with that - everyone should get what they want and what makes them feel happy.
I am going to say something VERY controversial: Seikos are highly overrated. I have owned several, and have built/modded several. The movements keep time poorly, sometimes even when regulated. I do not dislike them, but I admit that there are plenty of better options.
Watches with a Swiss automatic movement, such as Doxa, Certina, and others. Yes, you’ll pay more, but it will be more accurate. Or, good dive watches with a Swiss quartz movement, like Scurfa Watches. I own one and just bought two more.
I own Triton and Skx ... and for me skx it's everyday watch /more confortable. But when i put Triton on my wrist i can feel the quality ..it is not at same level ..it has anti-reflection sapphire/ better lume and details.
although price for value is an important consideration.. the Skx and the Monster srp309 2nd gen , are considered iconic pieces for the serious watch enthusiast
I got the Triton, and yes a bit more beefy than my 6.5in wrist can handle. Perhaps it it were a bit smaller like the SKX or came in a Titanium it's gonna be a keeper.
Actually the first skx case in Seiko divers history iirc was not the 7002 but the slim case version of the 6309-7290. Nevertheless imo the evolution of the seiko divers cases (starting with the over reacted coushioned case of the 6105 then the more discrete but still coushioned 6309 turtle) have nicely evolved to the skx case shape we all love.
I have been through most of the videos on your channel in the last week. What a solid body of work you have amassed here! However, given the focus of your channel, "Brave Beaters", the absence of Sinn is conspicuously odd. Why?
Hei Andrei, really enjoyed your videos. Great presentation and shots, concise and easy to understand commentary and critique and spot on recommendations! I am not sure if you are into Hybrid/Ana-Digi Watches, but I am very interested in your opinion on those watches. It will be great if you can do a comparisson or review on TAG Heuer Connected or Tissot T-touch new generation models. Keep it up sir, you are one of the best Horology channel IMO. Cheers!
Hi, thank you very much! My first smart watch was a garmin fenix sapphire, which I had to sell it because it was replacing my ghocks :D I think Tissot is getting better and better with connected models.
Very interesting video! As someone who bought a Triton for around 200 euros a few years ago, I was surprised to hear that they're going up in price. It is quite big, heavy and unwieldy, so I rarely wear it. If I do, it's mostly on a tropic, like how you showed it as well.
We need to move on to other better modern watches. I think the nostalgia is partially the cause of the price increase. Of course , these watches no longer being produced is the other reason. Sadly, as long as people overpay, prices will stay up.
My first watch was the skx009. I bought it back in January 2018 for 200€..this increase in price is crazy and totally unjustifiable but that's the watch market I guess (I'm totally not talking about you Rolex 😏) P.S. Great video as always 👊🏻

Any mainstream watch that typically cost between 200 to 500 can be easily be beaten up in terms of price/value with a San Martin or Pagani Design. You get SO MUCH more than what you pay for a typical 200-500$ Seiko or Orient.
There's always a better choice than Seiko. Including Orient. But both of these cost double what they should so neither is a good choice. Make mine a Scurfa. Love the videos!
None of them are worth the extra money, unless you really have nostalgia for the respective model. The 1st gen Monster never cut it for me, it's the 2nd gen that I consider is the only true Monster because of the sharp teeth indices. As for the SKX, I just sold my orange 011 because I already have an orange 2nd gen Monster and I do like it more than the SKX since it has an original design. The Triton is actually the "ghost" of the Orient Pro Saturation Diver, not of the M-Force. It's like the Pro Saturation Diver for those that can't wear the original one because of its size.
Personally, they are still value for money and I would add citizen fugu to the list. As some of the microbrands have also increased their prices as well and lets not insult the AliExpress brands as they do Swiss homages only...😁
