  • One of the longest awaited watch reviews on The Urban Gentry channel is finally here! For quite some time (donkeys, you could say!) Seiko has dominated the entry level when it comes to dive automatic watches. Orient has always come a close second, but that is all about to change...or is it?
    Today I review a watch that heralds a new era for Orient as they take inspiration from not only the tried and tested ultra affordable hits of the brand, but the heavy hitters too. With the colors and bezel of Mako and Ray models, the complications and dial of the Saturation professional series, and a case like the legendary Seiko SKX, is there a new king of the under $500 divers? Let’s take the plunge and find out if this watch sinks or swims!

    One of my favorite divers to date. I wear my Triton daily. The quality of this watch is amazing. Looks great, feels great. From the huge box it came in Orient does deliver great experience for watch aficionados. It puts Seiko's SKX, Turtle and Sumo to shame. The most impressive thing for me is the performance of the movement in my watch. The worst I get now is +2 spd and most of the time it is closer to 0. In fact, the watch only speeds up when it is not worn (dial up), so it's just another reason to rock it everyday. On Strapcode's Angus bracelet it looks stunning, though the standard bracelet is quite nice too. Awesome watch through and through. I highly recommend it.

    • @youtubeuser2943
      @youtubeuser2943 2 года назад +1

      Hi. In my opinion Orient movements are among the most reliable in the world. My father has had them since 1996 (simpliest tristar) and they still running normally after only two services for all years.

  • @ppsimmons
    @ppsimmons 4 года назад +9

    The crown wobble was done on purpose. A shock absorber when the crown is pulled all the way out - a long stem. It's a protection against breakage. It is not the "sign of a cheaper" crown movement. Orient explains all of this in their literature about the watch.

    • @NathanChisholm041
      @NathanChisholm041 Год назад

      Mate the crown stems are shockingly thin. Mine broke had to replace stem, crown and crown tube. It is a weak point as my watch guy showed me how bad they are compared to another stem...

    • @dominicchuaa
      @dominicchuaa Год назад

      @@NathanChisholm041 my stem also broke even though i wore it like twice (this was back in 2020) and i had to send it for repairs (good thing it was covered in the warranty) it broke off when i pulled for the last crown position. although it was designed that way, the watchmaker said that the design was executed - not poorly - in an average manner. the crown, like you said, is extremely thin. they replaced it and it has less wobble now.

    I have the black and gold variant and absolutely LOVE IT! The crown wobble that you describe when it's in first or second position is a bit off putting but the rest of the watch is just perfect. The quality is fantastic and it looks like a million bucks. I also agree that it's a heavy but I actually like that. This thing is a BEAST and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's actually quite reassuring to me that it is so heavy and feels so solid. To anyone on the fence about buying this remarkable timepiece, just get it! It's so different from anything else out there and very aesthetically pleasing. The accuracy is amazing considering it isn't regulated. You'll be happy to add this to your collection. Bet on that!

    I've been watching your channel for a few months now after I started getting into watches. I really love the way you're doing your videos and how your passion for watches and for what you're doing here on RUclips is just always present. Over the past few months I also started my own little "collection" and so far I went with a Casio G-Shock DW 5600e a Seiko SKX 007 and an Orient Bambino which I got used for even more of a steal than it already is. Oh and a few days ago I got myself a little Casio Royale and I love it just because it's so much fun.
    Please keep up the great work, I am always looking forward to your videos.

    Quite an accurate review. I got one a couple of months ago when the Strapcode aftermarket bracelet came out for it. The upgrade makes it an even heavier piece. The power reserve meter functions as a kind of step counter app that you can get on a smart watch--- if the meter isn't topped out it means I should go mow the lawn or something.

    Wow finally you reviewed orient triton :)
    I have this orient triton for about 3 months now and very satisfied with it.
    The movement is very reliable
    The power indicator tells you when to wind it
    The crown is signed
    The unidirectional bezel movement has satisfying clicks imho
    The dial color is nice
    Sapphire crystal
    Hand winding
    Etc etc
    I think this orient triton is all around diver with great value of money.
    What I don't like a bit is the lug to lug size which is 50mm. A bit longer for my small wrist

    Absolutely adore Orient. My breakthrough brand and I've yet to find another brand that offers the same quality at the prices they offer. Been eyeing up the Triton for some time, just a bit disappointed to see some play in the bezel when my $130 Ray II has absolutely no play.

      I have the Mako USA 2. My bezel is rock-solid too. It looks like the ridges on the Tritons bezel probably grip better than mine. Even with dry hands it’s hard to get a good grip on it. My complaints about it are very minor and it is well worth the price.

      True. The level of materials and build quality is far superior to most of Seiko's divers. One need to buy Marine Master in order to make an upgrade. Comparing SKX or even Turtle to Triton is like comparing a MB C class with 2 liter diesel engine to a BMW M4. Yeah both are German cars but...

    • @Mister_Phafanapolis
      @Mister_Phafanapolis 5 лет назад +1

      @@DienekesShade IDK about that. The Triton is a good watch but I don't think it'd be an M-car. If anything I'd downgrade the SKX to more of a Ford Focus: something that looks decent and people "like" but the more you investigate the worse it comes off.
      Seiko should be ashamed that INVICTA can spec out watches with NH35 movement for less than an SKX. A seppuku is in order.

    • @DienekesShade
      @DienekesShade 5 лет назад +1

      @@Mister_Phafanapolis What I meant was not that the Triton is a watch equivalent of BMW M4, but it is so much better than SKX, that this comparison was, IMO, appropriate. I didn't want to bash Seiko either. Since SKX is a solid workhorse know around the world, just like MB C class used as a TAXI ;) But, it is nowhere near Triton. If I were to compare SKX to a car, Ford's hatchback could be it ;)

    I purchased the two-tone in June and instantly changed to my favorite NDC strap which really highlights the gold and looks great (of course, you could put an NDC on just about anything and it'll be magic)! My verdict: It's a very nice watch, but I just can't quite seem to fall in love with it like I am with my NTH Barracuda. I LOVE the blue dial, but I began wondering if blue dials might be looked at as an undesirable fad someday, so instead of going with what REALLY appealed to me, I took option #2. The lesson: BUY WHAT YOU LIKE - otherwise, you end up with a watch that spends more time in the box than on your wrist!

I very much appreciate watches in the four figure plus price point, but there are so many quality watches available sub-$500, I just can't see myself ever making the big Speedy or Sub purchase. So, I appreciate TGV spending time on watches like the Triton.
    TGV's review is spot on, for good and bad. The positives truly and overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives. This beast of a watch dresses up and dresses down easily. It's in heavy rotation for my daily wear along with a SKX009 on a black silicone strap, a good ol' SNX Seiko 5 on a variety of NATO straps, Dan Henry 1939 and 1972, and a Casio G-Shock.

    Thanks for reviewing this one! I bought this in black. It is awesome. It is the first diver I bought and I love it. I learned so much watching your channel and spent a lot of time debating and landed on this about 2 months ago so it's really cool to see you reviewing it. I bought it from Long Island Watch with a grey and black NATO strap. Still enjoying the bracelet though. Thanks for all your info! You helped me get into this hobby

    Great watch, great video even if I still miss your genuine old enthusiasm of the early days. I have the triton two tone on a strapcode two tone and simply adore it.

      Did you see minute hand reflection? It’s very rough. I also think the logo should have been at the top and the power indicator at the bottom but that’s just my preference.

    Superb intro and great review of one of my favorite watches... been wearing mine for over a year and still love it. Specs-wise, it beats anything seiko can offer at the divers 400-500 dollar range

    I had to return mine because the crown came off completely.
    A shame because the watch is incredible. sometimes I think about buying it again.
    If Orient fixed this issue I would not hesitate

    Very good review, i got it for only $280 in hk, its very heavy if you are not get used of heavy watches test it before buying, i don't think the bobbing crown cos of cheap movement i think its propose for easy put back on lock thread and easy holding when adjustment. Like Russian vostok watches.

    I have the Orient FM03004B and it does +2 seconds a day from factory, and it was around USD150. It has mineral glass, but that's the only negative i can think of. I love the delicate look of the super fine seconds hand, and it's a transparent caseback.

      I disagree. Orient is almost always a step down from the equivalent Seiko. I've owned enough watches from both brands to confirm this.

    • @DienekesShade

      @@fungus70 That's a false statement. Even Seiko's fanboys know that. And this means a lot. Alas, one can disagree as long as one likes ;)

      Foong: Style and appearance is always subjective and I respect your tastes as you own. But from materials to movement to assembly to value to QC I don’t know how you can make that statement, regardless of how many watches you’ve owned.

    • @Ilestun
      @Ilestun 4 года назад +3

      @@fungus70 ?? At this price point you get poor quality control with a Seiko (misalignments a legion), you are stuck with Hardlex and very poor bands.......
      At $500 and under, Orient is two good steps above Seiko.
