    Like others have said, you might be flogging a dead horse with this - it looks like you have an issue with drainage and you’d benefit from a high sand top dress and overseed with a fescue. I’d get a core sampler to check what you’re dealing with under the surface, especially if this is on a new build site

    Great advice about the miracle grow autumn feed to give the lawn a kick start before the spring feed. Makes perfect sense once you explained about the lower nitrogen levels. Quick question…..Is the autumn feed readily available so early in the year?

    I have a two year old lawn that looks similar to yours. Maybe a bit more muddy. I’ve decided to take 1/2 of it and give it to a new area for flowers. Will start the project when the ground is at less risk of compacting.

    Need to start mine soon. I’m in the North West, guessing from your accent this garden isn’t a million miles away?
    Need to get the weed and feed down as well as my first mow (I know there needs to be 5 days between the two) and I’ve just picked up a scarifier as that desperately needs doing too.
    Anyway fairly large garden (about 3 times the size of this garden), south facing and at the mo is quite muddy and covered in moss. 😔
    On the plus side it’s in the sun all day as no buildings nearby casting a shadow.
    Anyway was thinking mow in the next few days, weed and feed at the beginning of April then scarifier poss a week or two later (with mows inbetween of course).

    Might be worth getting rid of the Rye and trying a fescue / bent grass mix given the winter shade you have in the back. I Killed mine off last year put down a fescue / bent mix and my lawn has faired really well over the winter, some food for thought

    The only solution I have found that works is to dig it all out then replace the heavy soil with rootzone and sandy loam as those will never waterlog or compact. I tried aerating and filling the holes with sand top dressing but that made no difference. You will always get wedgrass. The only way to keep it out is to plant denser creeping grassess like brown top bent's / fine fescues with the added benfit that they require far less light. They are not as hard wearing as rye, but ryes are not suitable for shaded areas and will die off on their own even without any foot traffic.

    • @Justanotherwilliam
      @Justanotherwilliam 3 месяца назад

      Would the same work by aerating and then building up a couple of inches above?... I'm in a similar position, but I've got the option of being able to just keep adding more soil on top.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад

      It’s something I’ve thought about. I’ve just had a tonne of top dressing delivered this week. Going to use it when renovating at the end of the month.

    • @stevenbelcher5658
      @stevenbelcher5658 3 месяца назад

      Water will still waterlog under it. Roots can go down 8 or more inches. You want to avoid layers of different soils and instead remove as much of the rocks and clay then mix the sandy rootzone / loam into the next few inches so that even when damp you can squish it in your hand, and it will still fall apart. You only ever need to do it once so it's best to take your time with it@@Justanotherwilliam

    This is the problem with rye grass seed mixes which were basically developed for football pitches. Which are ripoed up and replaced every season so not sustainable at all . Fescue/bent mixes are more native and stand the u.k winters better. I switched to these seed mixes a few seasons ago and to be honest my lawn looks better this year than ever .

    Enjoy watching the videos. I'm currently renovating the front lawn. We have a small ash tree on the front but also partial shade...just wondering what the best grass seed mix would be. I was looking at the a1 multipurpose, let me know your thoughts

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад

      You can get a shady mix, but it entirely depends on how much time it spends in the shade. If it’s in the sun for most of the summer, one of the other mixes might be best 👍🏻

    • @kylejanuszkiewicz2293
      @kylejanuszkiewicz2293 3 месяца назад

      Yeah, we have a little buxus hedging in front of lawn and I need to see from the summer sun, how much the sun is blocked on the grass because of it, similarly to the Bush you have on your front lawn. The front lawn never has foot traffic therefore, I wonder if I should just be safe and go for a shade mix as that will still like the sun. Although, the a1 multi purpose has like 50% strong creeping red fescue which likes the shade too, correct me If I am wrong

    • @kylejanuszkiewicz2293
      @kylejanuszkiewicz2293 3 месяца назад

      From memory, it's 40% dwarf rye grass, 50% creeping red fescue and something else so I think that would be a good mix to cover off both sun and shade

    quick question on your electric Hayter lawn mower. do you recommend or is there another make / model you would suggest? I have a Harrier 48 and its fantastic but for my lawn its a sledgehammer to crack a nut and also tears the moist lawn up with its metal roller due to its weight.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  3 месяца назад

      You’re bang on about it being the rear roller and weight! The electric Hayters are certainly lighter, but probably a mower without the roller would do less damage.
      Hopefully these lawns dry in the next few weeks! 🤞
