The trinity truly is a great mystery. I have been researching about it for years. I've heard so many different points of view but the reality is that it is in fact a mystery. I have prayed to God on this matter. I told him I do not completely understand how it works but I love Him regardless.
Christ said you are blessed, for believing in Him despite having not seen. I hope your faith stays strong, brother. Your intuition is correct: that a deep unfathomable truth can be unknown or mysterious, but still true.
I have watched quite a lot from Bishop Barron over the last few years. I keep coming back to him and always leave with my faith enriched. I do not have a denominational identity but very much respect the orthodox position and the consistency of the Catholic Church. I have, through prayerful thought and open minded research overcome some of the classical objections to R.C. and the misgivings that remain are those one would probably find wherever fallen man has any influence. The organisation is imperfect, the organism, the (whole) body of Christ is not. As my faith journey continues I shall no doubt enquire more of Bishop Barron, Trent Horn and Brant Pitre. Shalom. 🙏
IMO, Trinitarianism is the most elegant way of understanding how the God of the Bible can be both transcendent and immanent. We have a wholly Holy and Transcendent God the Father that decrees/begets, we have an Immanent God the Son (when speaking of the Person of Jesus Christ) that "breathes physical life" into the Father's decrees, and we have God the Holy Spirit as the "metaphysical glue" that holds it all together, and communicates God to us.
Many Christian denominations teach that God is a Trinity. However, note what the Encyclopædia Britannica states: “Neither the word Trinity nor the explicit doctrine appears in the New Testament . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies.” In fact, the God of the Bible is never described as being part of a Trinity. Note these Bible passages: “Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.”-Deuteronomy 6:4. “You, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth.”-Psalm 83:18. “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”-John 17:3. “God is only one.”-Galatians 3:20. "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."--Colossians 1:15 JESUS made it clear that some forms of worship are not acceptable to God. The trinity is a Divine mystery we are to accept it as GOD ALMIGHTY has given it to us. Matthew 13:13 “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.”
I struggle with the trinity. This was the first time I’ve heard it this way and makes sense. I can never understand how an eternal being could be begotten but not created but also eternal.
The problem is, based on what I've observed from people who find it difficult to understand the Trinity, many think that the terms 'son' and 'father' describe human relationship. Rather, human language is limited when trying to explain God. Using the terms 'son' and 'father' is the best we can do if we are unable to present a lengthy explanation, like when an artist describes the color cerulean to a non-artist as 'blue.' Any artist worth his salt will know that cerulean is NOT blue.

I like to think of the trinity as "ONE 1"; "O" as "The Father", "N" as "The Son", and "E" as "The Holy Spirit" all equating to "1". A distributed concept equating to a singular real value. As a rather bold move: what could be added it how God forms an "image of himself". As Fr. Birngruber explains in his book, Morals for Lay People, it is through self-contemplation: Colossians 1: "image of the invisible God" and "first born of all creation". As explained by Jesus in St. John 10:30: "I and the Father ARE one."

It just occurred to me that how we go about understanding the Trinity is, in some sense, a reflection of the Trinity itself. What the Trinity "is" is very abstract and mysterious. What the Trinity "does" is a bit more concrete, especially when thinking of the Divine Persons in terms of their Offices in executing Divine decrees (ie God the Father created the universe through the Son and in the Spirit). In other words, our gradual *understanding* of the Trinity's *being* proceeds from reflection on what the Trinity has begotten (ie the *doings* of the Trinity). Hence the analogy: Abstract Being Father (both beget) Gradual Understanding Spirit (both proceed) Concrete Doings Son (both begotten). Just as the Spirit has inspired man to say, "no one comes to the Father, except through the Son".
My personal understanding: Father == old person (past) Son == Baby (Future) Spirit == You (Present) Present is spirit because there is no present God is "nothingness" Nothingness is frame, where continuity is painted. Every past dissolve into nothingness. (Past to nothingness, Father to God is permitted). Past cannot migrate to present or future without dissolving in nothingness(God). Create new trinity, substituting Past,Present,Future and Nothingness. Futher to my personal understanding, universe, time itself is quantised. That mean everything is just slice of painting over nothiness. Every thing dissolve before time proceeds.

May I humbly note that the reference to the Spirit as God's sigh, while meaningful in itself (indeed Jesus breathed on the Apostles after His resurrection and said "receive the Holy Spirit") can be taken as seeming to diminish His full personhood. It might have helped to add that this Love between Father and Son lacks itself no divine perfection, including Personhood. Thus the simplest possible numeracy of God in Love is not two, but three Persons in one Unity. Thanks again for causing so many to think further on the Trinity, and necessarily our own relationship to our magnificent Creator.
One way of looking at the Trinity is as follows: If someone holds up an index finger it signifies what we think of as one. If we were to remove the knuckle from that finger, it would no longer be complete. Just as three knuckles form one finger, whole and complete, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comprise One God, as Trinity. Peace and All Good!

The trinity ty is a uniquely Christian belief wherein Jesus is God. Islam, as a matter of doctrine rejects that Jesus is God. That said, I encourage you to further study the trinity and grapple with its mysteries. Jesus is in fact God, and His death and resurrection at the Father’s behest cements that fact. His death and resurrection opened a new covenant between God and man through which we can be forgiven of our sins. If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and have faith that His death and resurrection can bring about the forgiveness of your sins, I implore you to pray to Him for the forgiveness of your sins and then to be baptized into His church. The Christian path is a difficult one, no doubt, but it is the one and only way to enter into a relationship with God. I’m no one special but you’re more than welcome to message me if you want to talk about God.

The concept of Trinity is very simple, considering that the hypostasis, known as the persona of God, stands for God's manifestation in the world, and the three personas are not separate deities, but share a single nature, as manifestations of the same God, since the third persona, the Parakletos is the spirit of God, the second persona, the Logos is the word of God, and the first persona, the Pater is the source of personhood, or the mind of God.
Look, I am catholic but I always get discouraged everytime I hear negative comments from non Catholic religions saying that Catholicism is not biblical. They do not believe in the Holy trinity simply because they don't find it the bible. I have been struggling to strengthen my faith. Also, what always bothering me is the images of Saints including Jesus. Where did it come from? I mean Jesus and his desciples lived 2000 years ago. How did they get painted? I doubt painting was already there at the time of Jesus. Either way I am still a Catholic and would be willing to die as a catholic. This is one of the better philosophical examples I've heard. Because rather than highlight the functional essence of God it highlights the salvatory and charitable essence of God toward His creation. To sum, Christ, the man, was the ultimate communication of God to His loved ones, by entering His creation in a manner that could be perceived, understood and related to by all humans. Had He come as a velociraptor we would have been petrified; had He come as a bull we would have run away; worse yet for us, had He come as He exists in His realm outside the universe, we would be ripped apart in a trillion trillion pieces (a bit like someone trying to function a USB by placing it inside a toaster and not a computer; just wont work because they are two different realities...). He came as us, through that Word which we were made through from in the beginning, in much the same way we make all objects through our own words (our ideas, plans, etc... our inner dialogue in other words). The Trinity is not confusing at all. It actually makes so much sense, that nothing else makes as much sense as it does. Look at the functional essence of God now. If God wasnt triune, it would imply His essence was inactive. How? He is self sufficient. He is all powerful. He is non contradictory. He is timeless. Where He resides there is no time and space. Scientists call that many things, and we just call that state/realm God. From both the conventional scientific and theological view point, there was a time the universe was not, which can only mean there was a time that God was not, or God is triune. And because something cannot come from nothing, we can confidently deduct there was never a time God wasnt, or what scientists call a timeless and spaceless realm. And because we know the universe once wasnt, we know that God is an active God, and for God to be an active God He must be triune (otherwise the universe always would have been and it would have never had a start date). In other words, the universe once wasnt, and than it became, implying a contradiction on Gods behalf; that all of a sudden He became bored or changed His essence. But because God isnt a contradiction, and we know He actively went from no creation to a creation, as the Bible says, in the beginning was the Word (the blueprint/plan/innerdialogue), which leaves only one option. The most certain thing in this universe is that our God is an active God and not an inactive God (triune in other words). If God was not triune, philosophically/logically He could not have created the universe without being a contradiction.
God bless you my brother. We shall indeed have a discussion. Matthew 28:19 First, to baptize in the name means to baptize in the nature. It is not meant to be taken literally. To speak of doing something in someone's name means that you are doing it as an extension of their nature, and that comes with the backing of their authority. Second, to understand that verse fully, you must first have no confusion as to what the 7 spirits of Elohim (God) are. They are first seen as the lampstand which was in the tabernacle. There are three parts to the lampstand, (seven altogether), 1. the center stand, 2. three extensions on the right, 3. three extensions on the left. The six extensions have their source in the center stand, which shows us that God has a primary attribute or characteristic, and six secondary attributes. Now looking at the six attributes, spirits, or what are better understood as expressive forces of God, we see 3 inward and three outward. The three inward are: - Wisdom - Understanding - Knowledge The three outward are: - Counsel - Mastery (Might) - Fear (Awesome Reverence) Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding are three extensions on one side, and Counsel, Mastery, and Awesome Reverence are three extensions on the other side of the Lampstand. This leaves just one remaining attribute, the Primary, Holiness. Holiness is the center of the Lampstand, and is that from which the other six attributes have their source. We know that God is Holy, and in the New Testament we can see over and over the term "Holy Spirit" or "Holy Ghost" being referenced, but we never see "Wise Spirit", right? We never see "Counseling Spirit" or "Masterful Spirit." Why? It is because God makes a difference between His Holiness and His other six attributes. We wants all of His creation to understand that He is primarily Holy. So now that you have a clear understanding of the seven spirits of God, you aught to be able to see that God's Holiness is not a somehow third version of Himself, even as His Son Y'shua is not a second version of Himself. But! God is indeed presented as primarily Holy, and then also as His other six characteristics. So now, referring back to that verse: To baptize in the nature (name) of the Father, the Son, and the Primary Spirit of Holiness, means to Immerse them fully in His Holiness, so that they will come forth out of the water with the mindset to live Holy before their God and His Son, all of their days. Bishop Barron, hello. I'll concede that the holy spirit is the spirit of God, hence they are one. However Jesus is a different and unique entity, hence. If we claim that Jesus is also God then Christianity is not a monothiestic religion . Which i am ok with because the teachings of Jesus is awesome.

The personhood of the Father and of the Son is more evident than the one of the Spirit, at least in a approach that looks at the cosmos or at our own experience. However Scripture is very clear about this topic. Could you give us a hint how to perceive the personhood of the third Person of the Trinity?

I'd be interested to hear how the doctrine of the trinity and the idea of the divine simplicity can both be true. How have these been reconciled by theologians? If the divine nature is truly simple, immutable, etc., how can there be such "communication" between what seem to be "parts"? I've heard some people respond to this question with answers like, "It's a paradox" or, "our finite minds simply cannot comprehend it", but it's hard to see this approach as anything other than a cop out. I'd love to hear your perspective, Bishop Barron. I'd also love to hear what viewers think.
Thanks for your perspective. To an extent, I agree. At the same time, however, we do make claims about God's nature based on reason, which help to bring more light to our understanding to particular aspects of God's self-revelation . I think Aquinas' argument for the divine simplicity is an example of this. I also think the Bishop's explanation above regarding the trinity is another example. I hold both to be true. But if we are going to make any such statements--and I think we are and ought to--I think we also must assume responsibility for them. Thus, when multiple statements we make about God seem incompatible, I think it is important to interrogate our terms more closely. To retreat to a kind of agnosticism regarding the ontology of God when we have already made strong statements about it is to not take responsibility for the validity of those claims. Also, regarding self-revelation, I think there is an argument to be made that all understanding is the self-revelation of God's logos in all existing things. I don't think we can account for the intelligibility of being any other way. Traditionally a distinction can be made between "special" revelation in Scripture and "general" revelation in nature, but ultimately all is "self"-revelation. So all theology is the product of our interaction with God's self-revelation, no matter how abstract the argument. I am happy to hear critique of my perspective on this. Also, please do let me know if I've misunderstood your point above.
I'd integrate simplicity and Trinity this way: 1) Nothing which is too simple to exist can exist. 2) Anything which possesses no capability to affect anything which exists cannot be said to exist. (In other words, communication is inherent to existence.) 3) By definition, God exists eternally, prior to the existence of anything other than Himself. 4) Therefore, God must must contain within Himself the capacity to affect/communicate with Himself. 4) If God is able to affect/communicate with Himself prior to the existence of anything else, He must also contain within Himself the action which causes that effect. 5) Therefore, God must contain at least three elements -- cause, effect, and action. 6) Therefore, a Trinity is the simplest entity which can exist and fulfill the philosophical requirements of God. Now, if you're wondering how it's possible for communication to be simultaneously eternal and capable of acting within time, that's where the concept of a divine Logos comes in -- an ordering principle need not change to result in different results over time (just load up a video game disc to see that concept in action). And, for what it's worth, the Logos (as the second divine Person) is consistent with simplicity in much the same way as the Trinity is -- existence as we know it simply wouldn't function without it.
My way of explaining this? God is simple. We are stupid. If god so chose to reveal the intricacy of the trinity, heck even of himself, it would make utter and perfect sense so much so we'd recognize it as more simple than water. It is not complicated, it is a mystery. Try comprehending the concept of a multiverse with me. Or how about a world where men don't exist. Pretty hard huh? What would that be like? How would everything work? But now, we can comprehend both a little. Because we are surrounded by the universe and men do exist (I think I exist). Both are things we regularly interact with on a physical level. But god? No man see's the face of God. We barely understand "God" we imagine him as an old guy with a white beard, but that's never said in the bible, is it? Or how about heaven as a place with a gate and clouds? I believe we know there is a gate, but clouds? Not at all. Human imagination. Now is there anything in the world like the trinity? Not even close. However that works is simple. I don't know why or how, but I don't think anyone accepted the faith because of the trinity. It's something you accept is true because the opposite is unsupported in scripture and well... faith. Trust me, everyone from Saint Patrick to not Bishop Arius learned this one the hardway. It's a mystery. We can understand it, but only if God told us. Because he's the only one who knows. Kind of like anyone else, only they know themselves well enough to explain themselves
The Divine Persons are not "parts". God has no parts. The Persons are more like "faces" or "sides" of the incomprehensible essence of God. Remember the fable of three blind men who were touching the elephant? One touched the trunk and said that the elephant was a "rope", the other hugged its leg and called the elephant a "column", the third one touched the elephant's side and called it a "wall". They are all correct - the elephant is all three of these things, remaining, however, one undivided elephant. In the same way, God reveals Himself to us in three ways.
I find the Holy Trinity very frustrating at times. I want to know everything about the trinity. What it means to be eternally begotten or eternally proceeding? It's just beyond human understanding. But on that note. I was speaking to orthodox christians about the holy trinity. I mentioned how the father loves, the son is the beloved and the Holy Spirit is the love they share. The orthodox Christian said "I'm not sure if orthodox christians would agree with that". The orthodox Christian said. I can see that the father is a person and the son is a person. But the Holy Spirit doesn't seem like a person since it's the "love" in which the father and son share.

I have watched quite a lot from Bishop Barron over the last few years. I keep coming back to him and always leave with my faith enriched.
I do not have a denominational identity but very much respect the orthodox position and the consistency of the Catholic Church.
I have, through prayerful thought and open minded research overcome some of the classical objections to R.C. and the misgivings that remain are those one would probably find wherever fallen man has any influence. The organisation is imperfect, the organism, the (whole) body of Christ is not.
As my faith journey continues I shall no doubt enquire more of Bishop Barron, Trent Horn and Brant Pitre.

IMO, Trinitarianism is the most elegant way of understanding how the God of the Bible can be both transcendent and immanent. We have a wholly Holy and Transcendent God the Father that decrees/begets, we have an Immanent God the Son (when speaking of the Person of Jesus Christ) that "breathes physical life" into the Father's decrees, and we have God the Holy Spirit as the "metaphysical glue" that holds it all together, and communicates God to us.

Many Christian denominations teach that God is a Trinity. However, note what the Encyclopædia Britannica states: “Neither the word Trinity nor the explicit doctrine appears in the New Testament . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies.”
In fact, the God of the Bible is never described as being part of a Trinity. Note these Bible passages:
“Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.”-Deuteronomy 6:4.
“You, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth.”-Psalm 83:18.
“This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”-John 17:3.
“God is only one.”-Galatians 3:20.

JESUS made it clear that some forms of worship are not acceptable to God. He spoke of “false prophets,” comparing them to a tree that produces worthless fruit and “gets cut down and thrown into the fire.” He also said: “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens.”-Matthew 7:15-22.
Jesus, in fact, said regarding some who would claim to follow him: “I will confess to them: I never knew you! In fact, he punished his people when they deviated from his laws and adopted such forms of worship.-Leviticus 18:21-30; Deuteronomy 18:9-12.
The “good news of the kingdom” is being “preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations.” (Matthew 24:14) This is not necessarily being done “with striking observableness”-in so obvious a way that every individual on earth will recognize it as a message from God. Yet, God’s truth is recognizable and strikes a responsive chord in honesthearted individuals who want to worship God in the way approved by him.-John 10:4, 27.

The problem is, based on what I've observed from people who find it difficult to understand the Trinity, many think that the terms 'son' and 'father' describe human relationship. Rather, human language is limited when trying to explain God. Using the terms 'son' and 'father' is the best we can do if we are unable to present a lengthy explanation, like when an artist describes the color cerulean to a non-artist as 'blue.' Any artist worth his salt will know that cerulean is NOT blue.

I like to think of the trinity as "ONE 1"; "O" as "The Father", "N" as "The Son", and "E" as "The Holy Spirit" all equating to "1". A distributed concept equating to a singular real value. We all form from God's "singularity" and we all form in GOD's "supersymmtrinity".

As a rather bold move: what could be added it how God forms an "image of himself". As Fr. Birngruber explains in his book, Morals for Lay People, it is through self-contemplation:

It just occurred to me that how we go about understanding the Trinity is, in some sense, a reflection of the Trinity itself. What the Trinity "is" is very abstract and mysterious. What the Trinity "does" is a bit more concrete, especially when thinking of the Divine Persons in terms of their Offices in executing Divine decrees (ie God the Father created the universe through the Son and in the Spirit). In other words, our gradual *understanding* of the Trinity's *being* proceeds from reflection on what the Trinity has begotten (ie the *doings* of the Trinity). Hence the analogy:
Abstract Being Father (both beget)
Gradual Understanding Spirit (both proceed)
Concrete Doings Son (both begotten).
Just as the Spirit has inspired man to say, "no one comes to the Father, except through the Son".
I've never understood the difficulty in understanding the trinity. I've always looked at it as one God revealing himself in three different ways.

My personal understanding:
Father == old person (past)
Son == Baby (Future)
Spirit == You (Present)
Present is spirit because there is no present
God is "nothingness"
Nothingness is frame, where continuity is painted.
Every past dissolve into nothingness. (Past to nothingness, Father to God is permitted).
Past cannot migrate to present or future without dissolving in nothingness(God).
Create new trinity, substituting Past,Present,Future and Nothingness.
Futher to my personal understanding, universe, time itself is quantised. That mean everything is just slice of painting over nothiness. Every thing dissolve before time proceeds.

May I humbly note that the reference to the Spirit as God's sigh, while meaningful in itself (indeed Jesus breathed on the Apostles after His resurrection and said "receive the Holy Spirit") can be taken as seeming to diminish His full personhood. It might have helped to add that this Love between Father and Son lacks itself no divine perfection, including Personhood. Thus the simplest possible numeracy of God in Love is not two, but three Persons in one Unity. Thanks again for causing so many to think further on the Trinity, and necessarily our own relationship to our magnificent Creator.

One way of looking at the Trinity is as follows: If someone holds up an index finger it signifies what we think of as one. If we were to remove the knuckle from that finger, it would no longer be complete. Just as three knuckles form one finger, whole and complete, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comprise One God, as Trinity. Peace and All Good!

The trinity ty is a uniquely Christian belief wherein Jesus is God.
Islam, as a matter of doctrine rejects that Jesus is God.
That said, I encourage you to further study the trinity and grapple with its mysteries.
Jesus is in fact God, and His death and resurrection at the Father’s behest cements that fact. His death and resurrection opened a new covenant between God and man through which we can be forgiven of our sins.
If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and have faith that His death and resurrection can bring about the forgiveness of your sins, I implore you to pray to Him for the forgiveness of your sins and then to be baptized into His church.
The Christian path is a difficult one, no doubt, but it is the one and only way to enter into a relationship with God.

The concept of Trinity is very simple, considering that the hypostasis, known as the persona of God, stands for God's manifestation in the world, and the three personas are not separate deities, but share a single nature, as manifestations of the same God, since the third persona, the Parakletos is the spirit of God, the second persona, the Logos is the word of God, and the first persona, the Pater is the source of personhood, or the mind of God.

Look, I am catholic but I always get discouraged everytime I hear negative comments from non Catholic religions saying that Catholicism is not biblical. They do not believe in the Holy trinity simply because they don't find it the bible.
I have been struggling to strengthen my faith. Also, what always bothering me is the images of Saints including Jesus. Where did it come from? I mean Jesus and his desciples lived 2000 years ago. How did they get painted? I doubt painting was already there at the time of Jesus.
Either way I am still a Catholic and would be willing to die as a catholic. There are just these questions I have always had in mind and I want it to be answered.

This is one of the better philosophical examples I've heard. Because rather than highlight the functional essence of God it highlights the salvatory and charitable essence of God toward His creation. To sum, Christ, the man, was the ultimate communication of God to His loved ones, by entering His creation in a manner that could be perceived, understood and related to by all humans.
Had He come as a velociraptor we would have been petrified; had He come as a bull we would have run away; worse yet for us, had He come as He exists in His realm outside the universe, we would be ripped apart in a trillion trillion pieces (a bit like someone trying to function a USB by placing it inside a toaster and not a computer; just wont work because they are two different realities...). He came as us, through that Word which we were made through from in the beginning, in much the same way we make all objects through our own words (our ideas, plans, etc... our inner dialogue in other words).
The Trinity is not confusing at all. It actually makes so much sense, that nothing else makes as much sense as it does. Look at the functional essence of God now. If God wasnt triune, it would imply His essence was inactive. How? He is self sufficient. He is all powerful. He is non contradictory. He is timeless. Where He resides there is no time and space. Scientists call that many things, and we just call that state/realm God. From both the conventional scientific and theological view point, there was a time the universe was not, which can only mean there was a time that God was not, or God is triune. And because something cannot come from nothing, we can confidently deduct there was never a time God wasnt, or what scientists call a timeless and spaceless realm. And because we know the universe once wasnt, we know that God is an active God, and for God to be an active God He must be triune (otherwise the universe always would have been and it would have never had a start date).
In other words, the universe once wasnt, and than it became, implying a contradiction on Gods behalf; that all of a sudden He became bored or changed His essence. But because God isnt a contradiction, and we know He actively went from no creation to a creation, as the Bible says, in the beginning was the Word (the blueprint/plan/innerdialogue), which leaves only one option. The most certain thing in this universe is that our God is an active God and not an inactive God (triune in other words). If God was not triune, philosophically/logically He could not have created the universe without being a contradiction.

Matthew 28:19
First, to baptize in the name means to baptize in the nature. It is not meant to be taken literally. To speak of doing something in someone's name means that you are doing it as an extension of their nature, and that comes with the backing of their authority.
Second, to understand that verse fully, you must first have no confusion as to what the 7 spirits of Elohim (God) are.
They are first seen as the lampstand which was in the tabernacle.
There are three parts to the lampstand, (seven altogether), 1. the center stand, 2. three extensions on the right, 3. three extensions on the left.
The six extensions have their source in the center stand, which shows us that God has a primary attribute or characteristic, and six secondary attributes.
Now looking at the six attributes, spirits, or what are better understood as expressive forces of God, we see 3 inward and three outward.
The three inward are:
- Wisdom
- Understanding
- Knowledge
The three outward are:
- Counsel
- Mastery (Might)
- Fear (Awesome Reverence)
Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding are three extensions on one side, and Counsel, Mastery, and Awesome Reverence are three extensions on the other side of the Lampstand.
This leaves just one remaining attribute, the Primary, Holiness.
Holiness is the center of the Lampstand, and is that from which the other six attributes have their source.
We know that God is Holy, and in the New Testament we can see over and over the term "Holy Spirit" or "Holy Ghost" being referenced, but we never see "Wise Spirit", right? We never see "Counseling Spirit" or "Masterful Spirit." Why? It is because God makes a difference between His Holiness and His other six attributes. We wants all of His creation to understand that He is primarily Holy.
So now that you have a clear understanding of the seven spirits of God, you aught to be able to see that God's Holiness is not a somehow third version of Himself, even as His Son Y'shua is not a second version of Himself. But! God is indeed presented as primarily Holy, and then also as His other six characteristics.
So now, referring back to that verse:
To baptize in the nature (name) of the Father, the Son, and the Primary Spirit of Holiness, means to Immerse them fully in His Holiness, so that they will come forth out of the water with the mindset to live Holy before their God and His Son, all of their days. Amen
If only sermons at Mass were as concise and factual as RUclips videos like this. Some priests wander off from explaining Scripture and the occasion of the Mass of the day.
We paraphrase St. Gregory of Nyssa by saying that just as there are many human persons but only one human nature, there are three Divine Persons but only divine nature.
Bishop Barron, hello. I'll concede that the holy spirit is the spirit of God, hence they are one. However Jesus is a different and unique entity, hence. If we claim that Jesus is also God then Christianity is not a monothiestic religion . Which i am ok with because the teachings of Jesus is awesome.

The personhood of the Father and of the Son is more evident than the one of the Spirit, at least in a approach that looks at the cosmos or at our own experience. However Scripture is very clear about this topic. Could you give us a hint how to perceive the personhood of the third Person of the Trinity?

If you think it makes sense, we must not only believe it ourselves, but also spread it to more people. Evangelism is not only the job of pastors, but also the responsibility of every believer. This is also the aspect that the Lord values most when ascending to the kingdom of heaven.

I'd be interested to hear how the doctrine of the trinity and the idea of the divine simplicity can both be true. How have these been reconciled by theologians? If the divine nature is truly simple, immutable, etc., how can there be such "communication" between what seem to be "parts"? I've heard some people respond to this question with answers like, "It's a paradox" or, "our finite minds simply cannot comprehend it", but it's hard to see this approach as anything other than a cop out. I'd love to hear your perspective, Bishop Barron. I'd also love to hear what viewers think.
Thanks for your perspective. To an extent, I agree. At the same time, however, we do make claims about God's nature based on reason, which help to bring more light to our understanding to particular aspects of God's self-revelation . I think Aquinas' argument for the divine simplicity is an example of this. I also think the Bishop's explanation above regarding the trinity is another example. I hold both to be true.
But if we are going to make any such statements--and I think we are and ought to--I think we also must assume responsibility for them. Thus, when multiple statements we make about God seem incompatible, I think it is important to interrogate our terms more closely. To retreat to a kind of agnosticism regarding the ontology of God when we have already made strong statements about it is to not take responsibility for the validity of those claims.
Also, regarding self-revelation, I think there is an argument to be made that all understanding is the self-revelation of God's logos in all existing things. I don't think we can account for the intelligibility of being any other way. Traditionally a distinction can be made between "special" revelation in Scripture and "general" revelation in nature, but ultimately all is "self"-revelation. So all theology is the product of our interaction with God's self-revelation, no matter how abstract the argument.
I am happy to hear critique of my perspective on this. Also, please do let me know if I've misunderstood your point above.
I'd integrate simplicity and Trinity this way:
1) Nothing which is too simple to exist can exist.
2) Anything which possesses no capability to affect anything which exists cannot be said to exist. (In other words, communication is inherent to existence.)
3) By definition, God exists eternally, prior to the existence of anything other than Himself.
4) Therefore, God must must contain within Himself the capacity to affect/communicate with Himself.
4) If God is able to affect/communicate with Himself prior to the existence of anything else, He must also contain within Himself the action which causes that effect.
5) Therefore, God must contain at least three elements -- cause, effect, and action.
6) Therefore, a Trinity is the simplest entity which can exist and fulfill the philosophical requirements of God.
Now, if you're wondering how it's possible for communication to be simultaneously eternal and capable of acting within time, that's where the concept of a divine Logos comes in -- an ordering principle need not change to result in different results over time (just load up a video game disc to see that concept in action). And, for what it's worth, the Logos (as the second divine Person) is consistent with simplicity in much the same way as the Trinity is -- existence as we know it simply wouldn't function without it.
Tomas D'Adamo - the Counil of Nicaea declared it to be true, after they took votes on what the trinity should be.
My way of explaining this? God is simple. We are stupid. If god so chose to reveal the intricacy of the trinity, heck even of himself, it would make utter and perfect sense so much so we'd recognize it as more simple than water. It is not complicated, it is a mystery. Try comprehending the concept of a multiverse with me. Or how about a world where men don't exist. Pretty hard huh? What would that be like? How would everything work? But now, we can comprehend both a little. Because we are surrounded by the universe and men do exist (I think I exist). Both are things we regularly interact with on a physical level. But god? No man see's the face of God. We barely understand "God" we imagine him as an old guy with a white beard, but that's never said in the bible, is it? Or how about heaven as a place with a gate and clouds? I believe we know there is a gate, but clouds? Not at all. Human imagination. Now is there anything in the world like the trinity? Not even close. However that works is simple. I don't know why or how, but I don't think anyone accepted the faith because of the trinity. It's something you accept is true because the opposite is unsupported in scripture and well... faith. Trust me, everyone from Saint Patrick to not Bishop Arius learned this one the hardway. It's a mystery. We can understand it, but only if God told us. Because he's the only one who knows. Kind of like anyone else, only they know themselves well enough to explain themselves
The Divine Persons are not "parts". God has no parts. The Persons are more like "faces" or "sides" of the incomprehensible essence of God. Remember the fable of three blind men who were touching the elephant? One touched the trunk and said that the elephant was a "rope", the other hugged its leg and called the elephant a "column", the third one touched the elephant's side and called it a "wall". They are all correct - the elephant is all three of these things, remaining, however, one undivided elephant. In the same way, God reveals Himself to us in three ways.
I'm confused if the son looks the father like a mirror he won't see him self he will see old man and the father other way around.

I find the Holy Trinity very frustrating at times. I want to know everything about the trinity. What it means to be eternally begotten or eternally proceeding? It's just beyond human understanding. But on that note. I was speaking to orthodox christians about the holy trinity. I mentioned how the father loves, the son is the beloved and the Holy Spirit is the love they share. The orthodox Christian said "I'm not sure if orthodox christians would agree with that". The orthodox Christian said. I can see that the father is a person and the son is a person. But the Holy Spirit doesn't seem like a person since it's the "love" in which the father and son share.
