THANK YOU, STEVE! I’m a 48 yr old wife whose husband has recently spent a 2 month stint in the hospital...he’s home now, but still not up to par so I didn’t want to bother him when the chain fell off the saw after I did some much needed trimming in our back & front yard. Your video was SUPER SUPER helpful! I’m so THANKFUL you had the mind to do such a demonstration because if you notice, you & 1 other person HAVE the ONLY videos of the kind here on helpful RUclips. I wanted to again, THANK YOU & let you know that it’s not only young, never taught before husbands, as well as the most experienced men who watch your channel but also those do-it-yourself women, such as myself, whom were never taught the ins and outs of a chainsaw. Your video, I’m sure, has helped way more people than you probably realize. So please, keep making your helpful videos and from time to time, make a video demonstration about something you’d ASSUME everyone knows because I’m certain, as living proof, NOT everyone WILL KNOW UNTIL YOU TEACH THEM THRU YOUR DETAILED VIDEO. ...SO AGAIN, with MUCH GRATITUDE, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!😘👍🏻🇺🇸

So, it's just about 3+ years since you posted this video, and it's still relevant! I have infrequently used chainsaws and recently changed the chain on mine...went out to cut today and lo, and behold it wouldn't cut. I was certain I had put the chain on correctly per the diagram provided, but we all know how those "foreign" instructions look..and BAM! It was backwards! So, thanks a million for a clear & concise video! We are not all born as woodcutters or handymen and someone needs to show us the what, why and when of this stuff!

OK, I admit - I installed the chain the wrong way around. I bought a nifty hand-held, battery operated mini chainsaw. When it would hardly cut through melted butter, I thought I had been ripped off. Then I found your video, flipped that chain around and found that this little gadget works brilliantly - cuts through branches with up to a 2.5 inch diameter in seconds. Thanks!

You might also remind people to flip the bar every time you remove it. Keep the bar clean and make sure the oil holes are clear. Also file the burr off that gets along the edge of the bar. Maybe you just wanted to show how to put the chain on and this would be discussed in a maintenance video. Like your videos Steve.

But, now I live in the countryside. We have a little bit of land and bunch of trees. So I bought my very first chainsaw at 56 yrs. Of age. So, I came across your video to be educated about a tool I had no idea how to install or replace the chain for my chainsaw. Thank you again your video it was very short but informative 👍 I don't feel like an idiot nor will I ever think of me in that way. Thank you for your video! I recently got my 20-inch chainsaw back from the local authorized repair shop following a "tune-up" after the saw stopped running. Now, my saw runs very well, but it did not cut well at all. I started looking at the chain and thought it looked like it was on backwards, but could not believe the official repair shop would have put it on the saw that way. I found your video to try and confirm my suspicion that the chain was on backwards, and you absolutely confirmed it! Now, I flipped the chain around and I can now clean up all the fallen trees and branches that came down in the recent big ice storm here in Virginia. Thank you for your very clear explanation confirming my suspicion that the chain was on backwards and showing me how to easily put it on correctly!

thanks, good video. I was wondering if you know, on the 362 c-m, the guide bar plate is kind of flexible. I bought an identical one, but it is sturdy but not to much thicker. Can I use the sturdier one or does it have to be the flimsier one?

Hi Steve, I received a Stihl MS 290 with no bar and chain. I am wondering what kind of bar (probably an 18in) I could put on. I guess it doesn't matter as long I put the right chain respecting the 3 magic numbers from the bar? Thanks!

st louis mo here. I AM stupid about this stuff, Steve & not ashamed to admit it. My story is that I took my saw to the hardware store to have it sharpened & when I got it back I noticed it wouldn't cut. Now I know why. So some people ARE stupid (though I'd prefer ignorant). Some smart people can make mistakes. So thanks, Steve. Won't make that 1 again.

Hello i have a question. There is this so called chaincatcher to catch the chain if it rips or fals of, i culdnt find a proper video on it so i wanted to ask is it preinstalled on every chainsaw? or do i have to instal it after i purchase a chainsaw? or is it even worth bodering with? (if you did a video on it and i overlooked it im sory).

You're a nice dude my man I like the way you explain that especially the apology to the random person that you accidentally insulted that was pretty chill too sometimes it's just hard not to put people on blast when they are being stupid cuz you got to learn from your mistakes and the only way learning is by pointing it out and then showing the right way.

Like the video. I have put it in bsckwards after too many buds while sharpening. Next outing nothing but dust no chips. Look at the chain and laugh. Humbling experience. Quick fix back at the truck tailgate with the field tools. Love your channel.

This video helped me..thanks...Question: How long should a chain last before it gets dull. I can cut down a tree and maybe cut it into about 10 sections and my chain is toast. Is that normal??

Haha, I'm new to Chainsaws. I just moved to the country, and my cs590 didn't come with a chain. I purchased one and put it on and noticed it was burning and not actually cutting a 1inch circumference tiny branch and I turned it off right away figuring I did something wrong and right away checked chain direction and I screwed it up. Flipped it, and it cuts like butter now. Within 10 minutes of having it set up properly, I was cutting thin branches rubbing against the house and cut into a loose branch that slapped the glasses off my face hard as hell. Learning 1 dumb mistake at a time, my friends.

Can you explain why the drive teeth (on the inside of the chain) look like they’re on backwards when the chain is on the right way. That initially what made me put the chain on backwards.
