I'll be double checking this from now on. Can't believe I haven't done this myself in 50 years of chainsaw work. Been lucky.
You’re a life saver! Spend about an hour trying to figure out why the chain wasn’t moving 😂 thank you!
I did this myself, yesterday, on my MS 261. I run the tension sprocket all the way back before reinstalling the bar & chain so there is plenty of play. Then, with the housing on I check the chain tightness, and lastly the break, seeing free running chain with the break off and the break locking the chain when it's on.
Thanks for letting me know I'm not a solitary dodo. I appreciate your calm, thoughtfull delivery.
DOUG out
“Snugging the Nuts” 😂. Best description I’ve heard in ages. This weekend I’ll see if my wife will come over to my workshop to snug the nuts while I tension my bar and chain…….
Good to know. I'm a new Stihl saw owner. I haven't made this mistake, but I did form the same habit as I have with firearms, and that is to function test after assembly.
Well done. Glad your customer got lucky on this one!
Good advice as always. If someone reinstalls their chain and immediately the chain won’t turn, you would think they would remove the cover and take a look at what they did.
Mistakes happen when you think you don’t need to concentrate, cause you’ve done it so many times before.
Always respect the machine, not only when it’s running but also when you maintain it.
Always good to review steps like this so you talk yourself through them every time.
👍🏼
This video came at the right time since I’m getting ready to install a newly sharpened chain.
good vid for helping narrow down the problem, thx. knowing that the chain should spin by hand helped me realize that the gear on the end of the bar had seized after sitting unused for a long time.
Well now this was a interesting video and some very good advice. The one thing that I do to keep the tip of my bar up while tightening my chain is I set a short 4 by 4 block underneath the tip of the bar and then I just pushed down on the chain saw and tighten the chain bar cover nuts.
Thanks for sharing👍Seems the simple jobs trip a person faster than complex operations. Thanks for the honest confession and super useful information. Best to you and yours.
That's good advice Dony. I sold my Stihl and bought a Dewalt cordless saw since I only use it when I have limbs to fall. Hope you and your wife have a great weekend as well.
I've been struggling with these problems since picking up the Remington Ranger 2 pole saw. I super appreciate this breakdown to help me understand. It's all so simple, but if you don't know, you don't know.
This happened to me a few days ago. Fortunately I managed to figure it out quickly. Thanks for the video, glad to see I'm not the only doofus that made that mistake 😅
Какую ошибку?
It's happened to me too!
Done this serval times on ms 271 thank god i always make sure the chain goes around the bar before i crank it up. Great tip as always dony 👍👍
Good info Donny. In addition to this, I also have people bring saws to me where the chain is hanging 1/2" below the bar, because they think that is tight enough. Then there are the ones who never knew to flip their bar each chain change to keep even wear. When I give the saw back with the bar upside down, they think I put it together wrong.
you'd think a bar manufacturer would think to print their logo so it is always right side up on one side of the bar and upside down on the other, but I didn't think of it until now.
Good day Dony Interesting video. I live down here near Kitchener > Took neighbour to landfill I saw saw laying in dumpster 170no chain & clutch bearing, I forget. Amish fix it, runs good.
I bet that is what happen. Thanks
Good video! Ryobi saws have a clutch like the Husqvarna. Makes putting the chain back on more difficult, to me. Looks easier on the Stihl.
This video was really helpful because this issue can happen to almost anyone regardless of experience if they are in a hurry. I just had this issue happen yesterday for the first time after using a chain saw for several decades. Because I always try to move the chain along the bar prior to starting it, I found the issue right away. Thanks -
Thanks Don. Another great video. As simple as it sounds, people still install the chain wrong. From having the chain upside down to not adjusting it correctly. I like the step by step instruction how to install the chain and how to identify if the chain was put on wrong. Thanks again Don.
Great job. Sometimes it's simple mistakes that catches people.
Thanks, saw started monthly during downtime this winter, stored in the basement.👍👍👍
here, winter is the busy time for the saw. in the summer, it only gets used for stuff that didn't get done in the winter.
Thanks again Donny. Would have never thought of this.
This can happen very easily, thanks for the tip
Thx for the video, always useful to review the basics
So far I haven’t done this, I always roll the chain over before I tighten the bar nuts.
В смысле ты еë переворачиааешь
да, всегда хорошо перевернуть его, чтобы убедиться, что все в порядке!
yup...been there - done that. but I catch it by always making sure the chain will move around the bar before I start it (now)...lol.
thanks for another good video Don.
Cheers from NB
I remember you from years ago on my channel!
@@donyboy73 you are very good at explaining what you're doing and that's a good thing.
Thanks buddy that was a very helpful video and I have done that same mistake on my 250 but caught it before any damage your video are so helpful bud I appreciate the time you take to help us out have a great weekend cheers
Thank you for this very helpful video. Godspeed brother!
Great info. Thanks for the tip Don! Todd from da Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
You saved the day sir!!!
I have yet to do that, now I am forewarned, thank you.
Very good explanation on then still chainsaws for the chain adjustment I have a question can you show how to re install a brake chain on to the handle to compress the tension on the Spring for a poulon 3314
Great info! Thanks
That’s EXACTLY what happened to me
Thanks so much!
Just last weekend watched a buddy doing his chain, got it all correct except the first drive cog on the chain had gotten out of the bar groove and he did not notice. Could have been a problem if he had just started it up
TY I was able to properly reinstall chain working as intended!
Thanks, very good information 👍.
I have an MS441 .. when I replace the chain I am careful to put the chain in the sprocket carefully, I install the chain … and check to ensure it moves freely … however, once I replace the cover the chain can be difficult or even impossible to move. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Great How to and why Don , thank you :)
Thank you for that advice.
Thank s
To me rimless sprockets are the hardest sprockets to get the chain on the sprocket properly. The drags have to go in the slots on the sprocket. The other worst Stihl saw to get the chain properly installed on the sprocket are those saws with .043 drags, like the ms170, 171, 180, 181, etc. after I install a chain, I rotate it on the bar by hand several times to make sure it is locked into the sprocket and track, correctly. If it will not rotate, I start over and do it right the second time.
The tension I was taught is that it should hold itself tight against the bar - not sagging away from it - and while you should be able to pull the chain away from the bar a little, it should be difficult or impossible to pull it away far enough that the entire drive link comes out of the groove in the bar. And of course it should snap back on when you let go.
hi , another helpful video in diagnosis . kind regards 😊
When I'm tightening bar I find i can move bar up/down a bit . I'm assuming I should tighten with chain right with it up as cutting pressure would push it up if I tighten i down?
Thanks Don. On the Husqvarna, what is best way to install the chain and bar? Because the clutch is on the outside, it is not as easy as the Stihl. I always seem to have a problem with that. Thanks again for your channel.
If you could use a pencil or laser pointer it would make the video easier to follow. Your black glove made the description of the problem difficult to see where the issue was. Your videos have been a wonderful way for me to learn about small engines. I grew up in Montreal and now live in Wisconsin. Plenty of snow in both places and with your help I have been able to make some repairs to my snowblowers and lawn mowers.
Yep, I have done this more than once especially when in a hurry.
I know what I’m doing and yes it’s so easy to install it incorrectly I’ve done it a few times lol . Also the reason for pulling up on bar when adjusting it is because it’s imitating the down / push pressure when cutting .
I've done that a couple of times. The last time i didn't get so lucky forgot that i did and ran it and ruined the new clutch an drum i put on it. Also some poulan chainsaws are like the Stihl with the way the clutch is setup
Thankyou
I’ve never had this problem exactly. I have however, sometimes installed the chain backwards. You notice that quickly, when the saw cuts funny, or not at all 😂
I think being in a hurry to get the thing back together is part of the problem. I ALWAYS check to be sure the chain is over the sprocket and I hand pull the chain to be sure it didn't slip off before even think about starting the saw. I have been working on them for so long I guess it became automatic from the start to hand pull the chain each time. I may have had a binding issue from the chain slipping off and recognized the issue up front and made a mental note to always check that. I have had several guys bring me their saw with the brake set, wondering why it wouldn't work right and the chain being on wrong. I guess I have seen it all at this point in time.
can't say I've ever seen that problem. the one I'm more accustomed to is people running too loose a chain and throwing it frequently, and having the drive fins all beat up so it jams in the groove.
They key is to rotate the chain on the bar after you install it on the bar. I take a folded up shop towel and rotate the chain from the engine to the sprocket nose. That little .043 drag just loves to drop into the crack between the sprocket washer and the sprocket. .050 or larger drags do not experience this problem, just that .043 chain.
Very good refresher!
Just bought a Echo 590 with a 24" bar. Do you ever work on those? Also love my 9010T backpack blower...would love to see you talk about Maintenance on these.
Sorry not related to this video. I have a ariens deluxe 24 and the gear box is flexing when the augers are engaged. Everything seems snug. Any suggestion what i should look for? Thanks
And this is *ONE* of the reasons why rim sprockets are so much more superior.
What's the easiest way to get the clutch nut and from the other side? I have to replace the bar nuts and I don't know. I don't want to break the fins on the clutch around the sprocket
Funny thing. Actually I did that mistake for the first time in my life 2 weeks ago on my Husqvarna 550 XP G. :D
Totally happened to me!
I wonder if it’s possible to install a washer under the “c” clip to keep the large washer tight against the sprocket?
Be'n there done that. Luckily i have never tried to start the saw.
I forgot to add - the first thing I do before I crank up a saw is rotate the chain on the bar. To do this, I fold a shop towel into quarters and use it to rotate the chain a few licks. If it does not feel right, I pull the sprocket cover off and check it out. I then adjust the tension and replace the sprocket cover. Then, I crank the saw. A well worn chain and sprocket if properly tensioned should rotate like glass on the bar. New bars and chain rotate a little tight on the bar, as do new sprockets, especially rimless sprockets.
I just grab the sides and tug. it tells me the chain is free, and oiling properly.
Hi.What will Happen usually when this Problem Happen?
I have this Problem and AS soon AS i try to Cut Wood my chainsaw Stop and never again start? What is your Idea??
@@salmanyazdanpanah3655 if it stops when you try to cut wood, sounds like a carb problem to me. Check to see if the chain will rotate on the bar. If not, the chain break could be on or you don’t have the chain on properly. A real problem with small saws with spur sprockets is the chain can get caught in the gap between the sprocket washer and the sprocket, especially with .043 gauge chains on Stihl saws. This can even happen on rimless sprockets if the drags are not in the slots on the rimless sprocket. What model saw do you have?
Another thing that I have seen is someone put the chain on backwards. Once you start the saw and try to cut with it you can break the crankshaft. The drivers on a chain act like a ramp or a wedge if you put them on backwards. When you try to cut with it the chain tightens up extremely tight. If it doesn't wreck the nose of the bar or snap the chain it can break the crankshaft.
i was looking for info on the MS881 and the first video that popped in the search results was a couple of dunces with an exceedingly long bar on it that had put the chain backward. 🙄
the tight yoga pants of the girl should have been a warning that i was watching them newfangled _chainsaw-touting influencers_ though. my bad. 😋
Не пудри тут людям мозги балбес
👍👍👍Thank you
I just CB anger mine and it won’t move. The chain seemed like a tight fit in the slot of the bar. Is that normal?
Don i like to run my chain so it sags off the bottom of the bar a bit. Which is looser than you do. I think it puts less drag on the chain so produces more chain speed and less wear on bearings. What is the problem with this?
If you do this mistake, rethink your life quickly. I started cutting wood at 12 and never got my chain pinched in between the sprocket and washer.
55 years of cutting, haven't tried that trick yet. Guess some folks should not use chainsaws. Safety first.
Hi.i have a questions.i have this mistak and after that my chainsaw doesnot start.why??
Another reason to convert(if possible) to a floating-rim sprocket drive.
Never had that problem ever
On a newer Husqvarna model you can easily ruin the oil pump if you get the chain outside the sprocket (ask me how I know).
thanks for the warning lol
😊
I was gifted a MS 170 and I think this might be the problem.
👍👍👍
I don't think I'm going out on a limb here when I say this is pretty obvious. If you are not mechanical enough to put the chain on correctly are you sharp enough to be using a chainsaw?
STIHL logo should face outwards on the bar nuts during installation, for maximum performance.
@ChrisR, what is the difference? I've never heard that.
I've done this, but noticed my mistake before putting the cover on.
Why would you mount the bar with the saw sitting on its side. The weight if the bar pulls the inboard end away from the sprocket creating the issue you are talking about. Puting the bar on with the saw sitting on the bottom keeps that from happening.
Dang. They need to try to move chain once installed
If you don't know what your doing.....just take it to the man !
I can honestly say that I've never made that mistake and I never will. I knew that since I was a kid, make sure a chain is on a sprocket proper and make sure things line up. I could only imagine taking an expensive piece of equipment to a professional, only to find out that the chain is jammed. How many people would even really check first? I mean you're trusting somebody to do something right. Somebody would run their equipment only to have a burn up or just die completely. The shop would only say that it's the customers fault.
Not a very well design. Usefull vid however I always check on correct positioning and move the chain by hand to check for drag resitance and final tension 😊
Who on earth would fit a chain incorrectly like that ( no shame there ) and then take the entire saw back to the shop without taking it off and trying again , looking to see what was wrong ? That beggars belief , but I guess it takes all kinds .
I just can't imagine not being smart enough to figure that out. Makes me wonder if they should be running a saw!
This is the sort of thing you get when people who own these things just don’t know what they are doing. Its dangerous and they shouldn’t own them. And it was too tight!!
It is hard to imagine somebody would put on a chain and see that it is stuck and then not just take the cover off and investigate. SMH
that's exactly what I was thinking.
If you are so unskilled that you can't work this out without taking it back to Donny you should not be operating a dangerous machine like a saw
The HUSQVARNA saw is not pronounced Husk a varna but Huskvarna
😁. Guilty
He seriously couldn't take the cover back off & look🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Oh I know tite to time tite
Should anyone without enough common sense to work out the problem even use a chainsaw?
The guy that brought to you shouldn't be using a chainsaw.!
