    I was waiting for the moment when Bertha was going to finally “Ann Morris” Mrs. Astor and it has begun. Her having to be pushed downstairs and rushed throughout the servants quarters, kitchen, and back yard while they worked was the last straw. She doesn’t do it in NY, and she won’t do it in RI either. I believe that since George has been exonerated, she is going to do exactly what she did in NY, build a huge mansion to rival the old in Newport. I knew the real battle was going to be Russell vs Astor. Season 2 will be AMAZING!! CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!

    • @SoumikSeymour
      @SoumikSeymour 2 года назад +8

      Of course, that's what it'll come to because Mrs. Russell is in truth just Mrs. Vanderbilt renamed for the series and the conflict is going to be the same historic one that Mrs. Vanderbilt (then fairly new money) once had with Mrs. Astor (the original old guard, name unchanged in the series).

    • @languageresources2314
      @languageresources2314 2 года назад +17

      Maybe because Turner's shennanigans didn't almost land him in jail. I think he was trying to protect both of them. Imagine what may have happened to Turner if Bertha knew what happened, that girl would be turned to pureé and sent to the bottom of the Hudson River, or Bertha may start doubting him, which we obviously know she has nothing to fear on that front, cuz George is wrapped around her finger. I also think he didn't want to undermine his wife's authority, after all, Turner was Bertha's employee, not his, so it was not his place. Also consider traditional gender roles of the time, and how George would have looked if he had ran to his wife with the "chisme" about her own handmaiden. I'd also say it was way more effective to portray his personality thay he remained calm, spoke his mind clearly and concisely and left absolutely no room for interpretation. It felt even more humilliating that way: "Ew, out, I'll stay quiet if you leave me alone. Out"

      People keep bringing this up, but think about what we know about Marion's dad. Agnes and Ada have already told us he was not a good brother he was not good with money he had no money he would rather see them starve then not take on a gambling debt etc. And if he had all that money he would at least have said some aside for his daughter. He didn't even own a house. Why all of a sudden would there be all these millions of dollars sitting in a secret bank account that only the rakes knows about? It doesn't make any sense. It's a natural Arc to have two people who should be together not be able to get together until at least series four or five lol. It always has to be some complication or misunderstanding or something that comes between them. Race has not had to use her to social climb at all and even if he did, what does he just marry one of these millionaire young ladies that he's now been introduced to? Like many people said Tom Raikes is sus. My theory is that the father of Marian has some shares in the Russel company. I mean we know he invested money in this kind of business. So Marian is in fact rich and not as poor as Raikes makes her think. And he wants to marry her just for her money.
    Now we know that in the next episode there will be a bal and miss Van Rihn and Agnes will be there(thx to promo pictures). And also Marian will run with Tom Raikes to marry him. So maybe Mr. Russel because Marian helped him, will remember that there are someone named Brook who has some huge shares in his company and will ask to Miss Van Rihn during the bal if Marian is her relative .
    So that Ms Van Rihn will have the proof that Marian is in fact rich and Tom Raikes lied to her and want to marry her just for her money. And maybe they will try to prevent her to run with Raikes and tell her the truth.
    Anyway it’s just a thought, we will see how it will play out.

    So, we can safely say that Mr Russell was saved by a Marian Ex Machina? I think Raikes is gonna break her heart, the Russells are gonna come to her rescue and marry her to their son to save her reputation, and that's gonna cause either Agnes to finally accept them and convince Mrs Astor to let them in, or, worst case scenario, turn her back on Marian and start a full on war, by Mrs. Astor's side, the whole society is gonna pick a side and season 2 is gonna be on FIREEEEEEEEE, my mom and I have bets with like money in envelopes. Not kidding, every episode we make our bets, stick money in an envelope with our predictions written on them, and we take the corresponding envelope when each prediction comes to pass in the next one. Since I'm hitting home run after home run with my predictions and I feel bad for taking my mom's cash I'll buy her something nice with my winnings at the end of the season. The only one she has won so far was Mr. Russell not going to jail. I have $1 on something just horrible happening in the final episode, my mom said not a chance, but just in case she put $2 on a fire, so I put $3 on someone getting poisoned, lol. In today's episode I won Church blabbering to Agnes and Ada about Bannister.

      I found that re-watching an episode allows one to better keep up with the various story lines. I like the format as it is, it keeps things interesting.

    I like the russels. It’s horrible to be snubbed. My mother made the biggest mistake of her life when after marrying my father and emigrated to the country they lived. She did not go to the biggest socialite ‘s birthday party. They paid dearly. And so did I . We where never invited to the important parties and dinners. And after her brother became the director of the biggest bank my parents where blacklisted by him and his wife. So. Believe me it’ was very very painful.. and this is “ modern times”. Thanks god everything is different now.

    Bertha Russell isn't my favorite, but dragging her through the kitchen and hustling her out the back door was just WRONG. I know I'm looking at it with 2022 vision, but treating her like that was just vile. And Beechwood is now owned by Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle- someone Mrs. Astor most definitely would not have approved of because he is "new money".

    • @VerdantSquare
      @VerdantSquare 2 года назад +1

      Whatever your eyes, it was wrong then, even if the mainstream was ok with it. It still was wrong. Just like the treatment of Peggy. There were white people then who knew it was wrong. No passes.

    • @IndomitableAde
      @IndomitableAde 2 года назад +4

      New Money absolutely should have been ushered unceremoniously into the kitchen yard because she had no business being in Mrs. Astor's house in the first place. It's as true now as it was then that one does not enter a home without the owner's permission. If I'm Mrs. Astor, my butler is fired, Mr. McAllister is on friendship probation and Mrs. Russell is cut to the quick. I don't dislike Bertha but I'm fine with her dodging fish blood and chicken feathers for her foolishness in this instance. She was out of line.

    I didn’t buy that the stenographer would just openly admit to all those crimes she committed in court like that, esp as it implied she was having an extramarital affair and would ruin her “honor” (not my opinion but how it was in those times). Happy with the result though, but it seemed a bit too fortunate and implausible

      I think it was a very "dirty" (but effective) trick employed by Mr. Russell's lawyer, accusing her of being seen in Bloomingdale's with Mr. Dixon and telling her he had good evidence for it, knowing this was false, so she would immediately defend herself by correcting him before she realized she was giving herself up. Like telling a kid that you know they took exactly 7 cookies from the jar because you counted them in order to get them to say "that's not true, I only took ONE cookie" and confess.

    I predict that this very good series will not last very long. Even if it gets great ratings it will not matter.
    Just as with other great HBO series like " ROME " and " Deadwood ", HBO will cancel the series because
    it is much too expensive to produce and the costs cut into their profits more than they like.

    Do not F with George Russell. He will make you regret your whole life. The man is a savage if you cross him. I want to like Bertha but she is a terrible person. George deserves better.

    • @languageresources2314
      @languageresources2314 2 года назад +5

      Nah, you, like George just don't understand how incredibly smart Bertha really is. Is she conniving? Sure. Manipulative? No doubt. Ruthless? Definitely. But a terrible person? Not at all. She just wants the best for her and her family and she is determined to get it no matter the cost, monetary or any other. Is she being self-centered, and not taking anyone's opinion but her own? Of course! And that is definitely not a good thing, she definitely should learn to communicate with her family like a loving relative would, asking their opinion, involving them in her plans, taking their plans, trials and tribulations into consideration before deciding for them, but remember, this is the tail end of the 19th century, that was the way these women were taught to carry themselves. Look around the rest of the female characters, they all act the same way. Van Ryhn, Astor, Aurora, Clara Barton, Mrs. Morris, etc. They were women who knew what they wanted, how to get it, and would stop at nothing till they had it. Sad, but true.

    • @tonyahines4554
      @tonyahines4554 2 года назад +2

      I totally realize how smart Bertha is. Doesn't make her a good person. She is willing to sell her own children to uplift her own position in society. That is wrong in so many ways. They have enough money to not care about the BS rules of NY society. Why not want what is best for her children not what is best for her own position in NY elite?
