    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

      I love how The Supremes were an act that not only appeared on this show so many times, but which also often performed more than once during those shows, and frequently to specialty numbers. So far, mostly, they’ve been airing clips available already on previously packaged DVDs or syndicated TV episodes, albeit with improved sound quality in addition to original-print quality. I’m looking forward to them airing hopefully soon those remastered specialty segments and in their entirety, too! 😍

      There might be backing vocals pre-recorded to enhance the sound, but this is definitely live. The music is much more lively than the single was, Diana ad-libs with Mary and claps which isn't on the record, and the ending is different from the record. Sometimes you can record a rehearsal performance and lip-sync that, but this seems much too improvised to be mimicked.

    • @marilynwillett804

      Exactly Sullivan never would have allowed lip syncing, even when he had The Doors on, Jim Morrison agreed to not say some word [I think it was the word high] but he went ahead and sang it anyway, it was live and he got away with it infuriating Sullivan.@@brockreynolds870

On others (Your Heart Belongs to me, A BreathTaking Guy) lovely and warm. When singing live, her voice was still nasally through 1965 but she gradually stopped singing through nose by the time she became a solo act in 1970. Now that’s not nice. Maybe you should get the whole story concerning the tension that was between these ladies. Think about this, even after Diana left the group Mary still was unable to sing lead. Mary was a good background singer, but could she carry a group singing lead?

    • @andrewthornhill7042
      @andrewthornhill7042 2 года назад

      @@MrNathan791 Yes. By the late 1960s Berry Gordy had shattered Mary's self confidence so much that she never even considered herself a (lead) singer. In Supreme Faith (I think it was) Mary wrote that when Diana was being promoted as a solo actor and ready to leave The Supremes, she didn't want to put her name forward as a potential lead because she didn't think she had the pipes, and she wanted the group to stay a success. So she stayed in the background and let Jean Terrell move into Ross's shoes. Later she took vocal lessons to improve her technique, which in turn gave her her self confidence back.

      @mhertz2563 Год назад +1

      @@andrewthornhill7042Mary’s alto was not a lead singers sound. It wasn’t then and it never was during her entire career. But her personality was one of a kind and because of the sheer force of her personality and charisma and the strength of the songs that she recorded as a background singer, she sustained her career right up until the end of her life.

      Diana was happy because she was in Berry Gordy’s pants around this time.
      They had an affair from 1965-1971.
      Now in 1965,
      Diana was 21,
      and Berry was 36.
      Diana had their daughter Rhonda in 1971.

      Berry Gordy was her father until she was 13.

    My favorite Supremes tune of all time.
    (Harmonically? Musique Noire.)
    This is a great live performance, displaying the legendary Motown quality control (dancing, flawless background vocals), and I have to believe that some/all of the Funk Bros. are sitting in in the rhythm section, making Ray Bloch's Orchestra sound surprisingly, delightfully credible on this killer groove.

      …. I doubt they have extra musicians from Motown to sit in with the orchestra on the Ed Sullivan show. Give this orchestra its due and give it credit for being great musicians and giving the best orchestra performance for this song. I prefer the Supremes’ performance of this song over the released single.

      Sadly Diana had an eating disorder. She was also a smoker. Her lifestyle aged her a bit. That combined with pressure from the industry and The Supremes’ work ethic. This is 1966. In 67 Twiggy would become the beauty standard and everyone wanted to be thin.

      @@MrRickyMoody yes, yes she was in fact. You can see it when the hand claps don’t sync up to the playback. 90% of the time “The girls” were lip syncing on Ed Sullivan. Or singing live softly over a (very loud) pre-recorded backing track. Everyone did it. It would be too technologically difficult and risky to pull off completely live vocals/music on live television. Especially in 1966. Even today, most artists lip sync during T.V. performances to maintain that perfect studio sound. That’s not shade, that’s just a fact. I mean, Whitney Houston’s “Star Spangled Banner” - one of the greatest “live” performances of all time was lip-synced.

    • @bleepiestofbloops
      @bleepiestofbloops 2 года назад +10

      @@XXXKrisAnthony That's not true, though. They only lip-synched two or three songs and sang live over backing tracks of a few more, but this is fully live. Diana clapping more softly than Mary doesn't prove anything. This show is known for its live performances and orchestra. This would sound exactly like the single, if it was a playback.
      If you mean they're lipsyncing to a "live" version they recorded for the show, even that doesn't disprove anything any vocal ability.
