The high pitch you hear is High Tenor and that is Ralph Stanley. I used to sit and listen to him live sitting on his front porch when I was much much younger. My mother is a Stanley and we all lived within a few miles of each other. I miss those days so much. Wish it could be like that now. Carter
No matter who is smoothing out the lead, one thing that folks always overlook about these classic Stanley trios is the fact that Jack Cooke was a baritone singing monster! He blended so good that most of the time his voice was transparent....just like a good baritone ought to be. I miss ole' Jack.
@1968Randall i used to live in virginia when i was a kid--and was dragged by my parents to every bluegrass festival in the area. little did i know i was watching history take place. what i wouldn't give to go back to watching bluegrass--going fishing and picking blackberries for my mom to make a pie?
Sheesh.. I'm 21 years old and would love to start a bluegrass band. But no one my age understands the beauty of this kind of harmony. Its kind of upsetting. R.I.P Keith
I got to hear Keith do a concert from the front porch of my house when he was playing at a local elementary school in our home town of Sandy Hook. This was just before or after Lorrie and him got married. I wasn't allowed to go to the concert because I was to young. But could hear it plainly from the front porch.
How can you not love this music and the harmonies??? I was raised on it, along with country and rock, but this is barebones singin & playin. Nothing better in this world!!!
man anything ralph stanley r keith whitley does is classic ima rap/r&b artist and i love there music it gives me cold chills everytime i hear ralph stanley sing and keith whitley just has a voice from heaven
What a beautiful song! I have long been a fan of Keith's and you just cannot beat Dr. Ralph. I had never heard this before but after the fourth listen in about 40 minutes...I am hooked!
We need to get back to this type of music. The Country Music now a days all sound the same and they all mimic other singers instead of being themselves. Give George Jones and others like him ... Their Music will Never Die ! Country , Bluegrass, and Oldies all need more attention !
Alright! We're back on track. I sure missed them doing that song. Thanks for re-posting it. That ending gives me chill bumps all the down to my toes. That's the "real" mountain singing. No frills, fancy costumes, Vegas hype, or exploding stages, just raw soulful mountain singing. It's the greatest. May it live forever.
This is one of the greatest renditions of a heart wrenching song I have ever heard. Sorrow follows some people around and drowns them. A P had his ghost as well but it did not kill him. I miss you both. I wish I had known AP and Keith. I often wonder Will you miss me when I'm gone.
honestly, best guitar break ever , at least to me. Heard it first time in -82 and stuck with me since . And this song is one of the most emotional ever recorded-along with "Prettiest Bed Of Flowers"
Great Song ! Love it ! He sings it beautifully ! The playing is really awesome, top class ! A wonderful version of this old classic ! Excellent Video ! Thank you so much justmusicandme for sharing ! Many thanks to goodmusic70 for this fantastic upload ! 5*****+
i have viewed this more than a dozen times in the course of three days, it...does....not....get....old. pretty much some of the best stuff i think ive ever heard, almost across ANY genre...and there is plenty of other GOOD STUFF out there. usually when it's REALLY good, though, it transcends genre, and is timeless!
This is before my time, but it's timeless!Everytime i hear that high lonesome sound it makes me yearn for the hills of home.If i go a little while without hearing bluegrass that banjo sends chills up my spine everytime.
Just happened on your channel - This is wonderful! Some real oldies, this is so good. Loved Keith Whitley - anything of his. He was very young here. Thanks for sharing. Gwen
@Banjerman07 I have ever album Keith ever made with Ralph...but his heart was in Country..He loved Lefty and Merle...when they did that album with Steel and drums..J.D. said you could see a BIG SMILE on Keith's face that had never been there before...
lol i didn't recognize him without all the hair. Too bad there aren't any radio stations around Dallas that play good stuff like this. I heard "Don't Close Your Eyes" -once- on 99.5 FM, but that was it. most of what they play is either rock-a-billy type music, or it has a hip-hop beat. I miss the old-fashioned, true-blue country music.
I would like to ask the three viewers that did not like this a question. Was it just to good for you or what? This was awesome and if you did not like this you don't have a good ear for music is all that I can say for you! This is how it should be done, some of the best I have ever heard!!!
thank you for uploading this !!! this is great - upload more please, "catch a train and ride" with Keith singing, i haven't heard in years or some with Roy Lee centers would be great too !!!
That is Curly ray cline my good sir, im not sure if he was a drinking man but that unneeded comment im just glad you havea descent taste in music have a good day
@kjwhite88 There are kids your age and they want to do it too! Go to some bluegrass festivals and you might just find yourself friends of a lifetime and band mates too! Good luck and keep on keepin on!!

Still the best version of that song I've ever heard. Pure mountain singin', It just don't get no better.

Now this is true old time, mountain style Bluegrass.... The ending harmony is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!! I give it 100 stars just for the ending!

He was a superstar back then in the making....love you Keith. Miss you. Country music LOST when you passed.
My dad used to sing this all the time when I was a kid...now that he is gone, I truly do miss him.
this performance is soul shattering, Keith's early days are truly his best.
That will bring a tear to a glass eye.

It will soon be 22 yrs since you left us,you bet I miss you and your great music.
Keith we love ya bud... Still playing your music. Thank you
This is one of the greatest renditions of a heart wrenching song I have ever heard.
Sorrow follows some people around and drowns them. A P had his ghost as well but it did not kill him. I miss you both. I wish I had known AP and Keith.

country music is and will always be the best..
Well put! I am more than double you age and still can't get enough of this sound!
Keith Whitely was one of the best, great video! Notice that they sing with feeling and respect, especially with a gospel song.
Great Song ! Love it ! He sings it beautifully ! The playing is really awesome, top class ! A wonderful version of this old classic ! Excellent Video ! Thank you so much justmusicandme for sharing ! Many thanks to goodmusic70 for this fantastic upload ! 5*****+
Country music like all other music will never be like we remember
Nothing has ever surpassed this Bluegrass sound - all the hot-shot gnat-note picking never sounds this good.
Always brings a tear to my eyes
lovely music.... keith... wow...so unreal...RIP...bring tears to my eyes.... ty
Some great harmony go'n on here. Kieth looks so different.
Now that has some complicated harmonies and nice picking!
i have viewed this more than a dozen times in the course of three days, it...does....not....get....old. pretty much some of the best stuff i think ive ever heard, almost across ANY genre...and there is plenty of other GOOD STUFF out there. usually when it's REALLY good, though, it transcends genre, and is timeless!
Keith at his best,IMO.
This is a classic! Especially, when the fiddle player checks his watch... "I'm wasting good drinking time here!"
What a gem! Thanks for posting!

when you hear ralph come and sing so pure at heart
my grandpa played with ralph and kieth at renfro valley ky.
Contrast these musicians with the crap we have today. These guys could all play, and they knew how to harmonize. Great stuff
@Banjerman07 I have ever album Keith ever made with Ralph...but his heart was in Country..He loved Lefty and Merle...when they did that album with Steel and drums..J.D. said you could see a BIG SMILE on Keith's face that had never been there before...
Yes I will and yes I do.
Yes, Keith, I miss you.
Their harmony is absolutely beautiful.

The guy playing the lead guitar is Renfro Profit who was replaced by Junior Blankenship in the 1980's. Sammy Adkins replaced Keith Whitley.
@kjwhite88 There are kids your age and they want to do it too! Go to some bluegrass festivals and you might just find yourself friends of a lifetime and band mates too! Good luck and keep on keepin on!!
What happened to all the Whitley/Stanley videos. Please bring them back.
