I can remember back to a warm summer evening at the general store listening to the ole boys down from the hills playing their hearts out. Us kids running around catching fire flies in mason jars, high as a kite on moonpies and rc colas...Life was great then in the early 70's, god where has the time gone.........
Just a few years back, I was playing Dayton, Ohio. Del and the boys pull their bus into the performer parking lot and of course, carrying their own instruments, they came walking across to the venue there downtown. I went back to chat with them as they were loosening up to say hello. There was no getting ready. They were ready to go on stage the moment they walked off of that bus. When they are on the road, it is always game on! Great folk!
I've never seen the Blue Moon of Kentucky, I've never been far from the Río de la Plata. But I love bluegrass music since the 70s, when a now defunct agency of American Government had a Lincoln Library in Buenos Aires which lent books, LPs and cassettes for free. Long live good music!
Once a person develops a taste for this music, they are a fan for life. I am glad to see that these old recordings are still available for viewing. Keith was the best! And Ralph-- he does a great job with all his tunes. May he be around for a long time!
Keith was in my option still is! The best bluegrass vocalist to ever sing a note! Especially on J.D. Crowe's Live in Japan album , his take of Rose Colored Glasses is amazing!
The best music there ever was or will be. God blessed these men and they were gracious enough to share His gift. I will hear them again on the other side of the Jordan on a heavenly shore. Praise God and pass the jar.
I remember going to see the great Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at Shindig in the Barn in Lancaster PA and when they came out on stage I wondered how these young guys (Keith and Ricky Skaggs) rated to get to play with the great Ralph ...... Then I heard them sing and play and I had my answer. This is a great example of their talent. Thanks for posting.
Boy this can make the tears run and make me miss my youth. Keith with Ralph was as close as you ever got, if not better than Ralph and Carter. I think Ralph knows that too. That is great stuff and I always feel like I am coming back to real authentic grass that I grew up on whenever I hear it. Thank you for sharing!
Singing into a single mike like this must bond you to the other singer/s like nothing else. You must be able to feel their breath and the harmonic vibration of their voices. POWER in harmony! It's no wonder they sing so well...
I'll never forget the first time I heard the first song in this set..late one night at Bean Blossom Indiana..a mist creeping up from the lake behind the stage and fireflies sparkling in the trees and Keith Whitley's AMAZING voice...I have never had goose bumps like the before or since!!
ive been listening to the stanley bros since i was i was a baby i will allways love this music i remember my mom waking me up to this every morning down home i play this every day now even my kids have to here it and thank you for my autistic son whom cant speak but loves it do u have mountain dew from this show i would love to see that thank you your the best
this so true because i have looked up to ralph stanley for a long time and still do and i look up to keith whitley as well because they are great together
still gives me goosebumps to hear this ...best ever......I think Marty Stuart and his band and Del McCoury and his pickers still lay it down like it should be
This just cant be beat! i base my lead singing around keith's singing right here on this video! Ralph and the boys are so awesome during this time period!
As Eddie Stubbs would say, "Are there any questions?..if there are, give me a call & let's talk it over." There are no questions! Keith-Ralph-Curly Ray-Renfro-Jack, his best band since Carter passed on.
Look at the way this group is dressed. Professional from the word go. None of this look like they just crawled out of a dumpster like so many acts today think is cool. Stanley, McCoury, these people know how to present a professional show. I'd pay to see them anytime.
I see your point but I believe music is about the emotion put into it, not the musicians dress. Most musicians are struggling today because music is widely pirated. T
sorry rebelgibson, but donkey9900 is right, that guitar player is Renfro Profitt. He performed with Ralph between 1976-1977, right before Junior joined the band

This is great music. Today's music can't even get close to this.

This just blows me away. This must be some of Kieth Whitley's best singing ever!

So glad I got to see Curly Ray. Special kind of person.

All of Ralph's best lead singers have been from Eastern Kentucky. There's something about those mountains and hollers that effects your soul.
these harmonies bring a tear to my eye. RIP keith

Love it!! I love bluegrass, gospel but mostly bluegrass gospel. Just makes me feel good to hear it and sing with Ralph on "Oh Beautiful Star". : )

Top notch class. I so enjoy listening to this. So few realize Keith was so pure country.
I come back and play this everyday, I am not kidding. thank you for posting.
This is some of the best mountain harmony I heard since Carter passed away. I love it!!

WOW. I never new Kieth Whitley was this awesome.
Wonderful. Keith Whitley was a one of the best bluegrass singers. Should have stayed with Ralph Stanley. And Curly Ray Davies!!!!

Yep, it just don't get no better than this. That's the REAL bluegrass sound.
Bless Mom and Dad God ,Keep them in your arms. Thanks Dad for the pennies
One of my favorite bluegrass singers and one of my fav songs, Oh Beautiful Star of Bethlehem. Love it!

This is the greats of bluegrass love all keep them comming please
Troy "Renfro" Proffitt. Once of the best pickers to pick up a guitar. Now lives in Johnson County Kentucky
Keith seems to be happy singing Bluegrass. He could take a song and sang all over it.!!
ive been listening to the stanley bros since i was i was a baby i will allways love this music i remember my mom waking me up to this every morning down home i play this every day now even my kids have to here it and thank you for my autistic son whom cant speak but loves it do u have mountain dew from this show i would love to see that thank you your the best

Love it! Good bluegrass and bluegrass gospel makes me feel so good. Guess that's why I'm addicted to it. :-)
Ralph Stanley, Keith Whitley, Curley Ray Cline, Jack Cooke and Renfro Proffit from the year Nineteen Hundred And Seventy Seven
WOW! Love it. Keith was all that and a bag of chips.
Wow. What great music this is
the thing about harmonies is each combination of voices are unique and sadly this one is gone.
i would like to hear keith and carter together that would be unbeatable
Ralph sounds great!! even humming during the chorus 👍🏼👍🏼
these new videos are priceless! 2 of my favorite voices together to watch again and again! RUclips has given us all a gift.,,thanks for posting
Just awesome. Hard to beat that.
Love it!!!! This is some real music!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
still gives me goosebumps to hear this ...best ever......I think Marty Stuart and his band and Del McCoury and his pickers still lay it down like it should be

I'll second that. He sung with the feelin.
Beautiful !
Fantastic performance. Great musical and vocal mix. Too bad Keith had to eave this earth way too soon.
absolutly flawless man!
Keith in the finest form
If this music does not move you, you need to do some soul searching......it is spiritual to the soul.
As Eddie Stubbs would say, "Are there any questions?..if there are, give me a call & let's talk it over."
There are no questions! Keith-Ralph-Curly Ray-Renfro-Jack, his best band since Carter passed on.
Jesse Keith should do some bluegrass and get that harmony . It would get his harmony and vocals perfect for every kind of music.

Check out the guitar Whitley is playing..1938 D-28 that Lester Flatt gave him...Whitley could do Flatt to a "T"...
I sat in with Dr. Ralph Stanley at poppy mnt
I see your point but I believe music is about the emotion put into it, not the musicians dress. Most musicians are struggling today because music is widely pirated. T
Exactly, thanks for the comment
Nice! I thought Larry Sparks version was great. I guess either way it is a classic Stanley Brothers / clinch Mountain Boys tune. Good stuff!!!
I agree 100%
The sad thing is that everybody on that stage is now dead except the oldest one ralph will never die.
the johnson mountain boys came close...union stations also.... but i dont think this can be beat
sorry rebelgibson, but donkey9900 is right, that guitar player is Renfro Profitt. He performed with Ralph between 1976-1977, right before Junior joined the band
yeh super
No that's Renfro. Jr. never played while Keith was in the band.
I Believe his name is Troy "Renfro" Profitt
He was a giant, but his run was too short.
That aint Jr Blankenship....believe it is R Profit
do any videos of carter exist besides the in the pines one?
Does anyone know who the guy was playing lead guitar?
