- Fixed the locking up Brake problem on Ford F150, replaced vacuum hose, stuck caliper. First thing to replace before you tackle the pump is the rubber brake line. I have seen this cause a check valve situation that will keep the caliper engaged.

Buddy I think you have just saved my truck. I had no idea where to start to try to diagnose what the problem was I just knew after the third calipers that it was not the brake caliper. You have won * the coolest guy on RUclips today* award
Also replace your brake line.
I have a 2010 f150 and after months of trying to figure out what the problem was, I finally came home to a cherry red rotor pad and my truck almost caught on fire. Literally this video saved my truck. It’s either the pump or the brake line. I did both and it works perfectly now…
Mine is a 2010 F150 5.4L. Did yours come with the pump described in this video?
The video was very helpful! But for future reference there is a much easier was to change it. Open the hood and remove the screws holding the drivers headlight. After removing the headlight you can easily access the pump and lift it straight out.
I have the same problem with my 2016 F150. You saved me hours of trouble. Thanks!
Thanks to you I fixed the same problem on my F150.Good luck.
Thank you my left front is going through the same issue. I will go through your troubleshooting procedure to check it out. I have replaced my brakes and rotors and still have the same problem with the front left. I was getting ready to replace the caliper which seemed to be fine till I saw your video. Thanks again
Glad it helped
Thanks for this ! Was happening on the same driver front. I had to replace my pads and rotors a few times. I bleed my breaks 3-4 times in a 6 month span thinking it was that. I am replacing my vacuum pump next. Thanks again
Boy am I glad I found your video. I have a 2012 Ecoboost 3.5 with a stuck right front caliper - just took the wheel off to see what's what. I'll try your suggestion about relay 25 and see if that pump is the problem, but I think it could also be corrosion on the caliper (they're the original, just with PowerStop pads). If it turns out to be the caliper, I think I'll go all in on a new set all round, along with new stainless wrapped hoses.
Thanks for taking your time and sharing
You are amazing! Thank you so much brother for helping us all , I was about to loose my mind!!!!
Thanks so much for your video. This is my first semi new truck since the carburated days and all this electronic crap sucks. I was at a light in traffic and got off the brake to accelerate quick in rain and the back wheels jus sit thier and spun with no movement forward. Front brakes and calipers all new but locked up, would not release. Craziest thing ever. Usually it's a bad soft line that causes this, but wow stupid expensive ideas the have on all these new vehicles
Thanks for sharing had same problem big help man much appreciated
Nice catch bro!. Love finding people who can figure stuff out.. I have the 5.0 prob not gonna have the same, but I have friends with the 3.5.. brain candy.. Thanks.
thank you, this was exactly what i needed, best.
Thank you passing along the information my friend, good man and I'll do the same if I ever come across issues without much info
Your welcome
Awesome video, i just changed my caliper and the new ones sticking. I was going to start with the master cylinder, but this video gives me hope i have the same issue! Easy wrenching, dodging unnecessary expenditures, and using tools i already have are my favorite things!
Change your rubber brake line before you buy the pump
Do you have a 3.5?
Yes
Cool video. Thanks for trying to help people
Thank you for the video. I have a two-wheel drive 2012 STX with the 3.7 and I suspected that the advanced track system was to blame. The pump on my truck is a little different than the one on yours mine has all four brake lines coming to it and one from the master cylinder and that's all on a block with a pump on the back and a giant wiring harness going to it.
Thank you I am dealing with this problem right now with my F-150 and that will be my next thing replaced.
Best video. Thank you. My 2012 f150 ecobost also has same issue. Front driver wheel sticks and wheel and rotor becomes extremely hot. I have replaced brake pads, rotor and caliper. Problem still did not go away. Now I saw this video. I will try your suggestion. Thanks again.
What fixed it
thank you for the info, my truck had the same problem. when first starting truck I had no brakes instill it would warm up. I'm in Wrentham Mass.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the view
Thanks so much you saved me alot of money and time thanks
I have to share this I could not believe that this was the problem. I had the front brakes not releasing for about 10 seconds. Finally I had to replace a calliper. After replacing the vac pump still dragging. The fix was take the wheel off take a crowbar and force the clamp that holds the brake line in place open so the brake line was loose. Did this on both front callipers and it was like a miracle. Problem finally fixed.
tried this as well and after two days of driving it seems to have worked.
Thanks for the video! My right caliper is locking up the passenger side front and I have to change the pads weekly right now. I have changed everything I could think of but not this part. What is the part number
That was very helpful information my f150 having brakes getting stuck I thought I had to replace the calipers or bleed them
Thanks for the information I really appreciate it
No problem!
Best video ever thanks a lottt!!
Dude tnx for that video just changed caliper on my two weeks ago and they went bad again 💪
Replace the rubber brake line first .
Helpful thanks a lot bro
My sons got a 2011 f150 and constantly the front brakes are smoking hot
I am having this issue and couldn’t figure it out, thank you so very much for this video!
Change your brake line first. It’s usually the issue
@@RCBGarage so one question, I have seen that you always say to change the lines first, so my question is, is the problem the lines or the pump? I have the same problem, I just bought a brand new caliper and the truck is doing the same, so what should I do next? Replace the pump or lines? Thanks in advance.
@enriquereyes6977 I tell people to replace the line first for two reasons. 1st When replacing a caliper you should always replace the rubber line with it. 2nd eliminate all of the inexpensive potential problems first. The pump assembly is very expensive. In the video I show you how to test the pump to make sure yours works. Break lines are 50% of the issue on most vehicles
Excelent video!! Thanks!!
Thanks my man its very appreciated
Thank you for explaining the humming noise! Did changing the pump stop the humming noise? Is it possible that the humming is because of the brake line check valve situation? I have a humming noise in the engine compartment (like a pump or electric motor running, not screeching or hissing, just running) when I am in Park or when I put it in gear while not moving but when I press on the brake pedal it starts humming. I also have a right rear brake system that has demolished two sets of pads in a matter of months. I also have an emergency brake that doesn't come off all the way unless I lift the pedal up the rest of the way. I wonder how all this might be related? Could it ALL be because of the brake lines? How can I tell if the right rear brakes are not releasing before they destroy the pads? I can't feel it doing it, but suddenly I can HEAR metal on metal on the right rear wheel. I haven't had the brakes looked at this second time yet, but I can hear scraping.
Thanks for the video I replace the four rotors on my 2010 and the calipers and still had my brakes sticking on the front passenger side and after pulling my hair out trying to figure out what it was I just can’t fix that problem and now thanks to your video I think I can finally get this damn thing done.
Start with replacing the rubber brake line. Then go from there
Heres my problem, sometimes ill drive my truck.i park it,and go back to get it in and take off and i gotta give it more throttle to go.its like its dragging.also sometimes i turn and i get a weird vibration feels like coming from the rear, maybe im turning against a dragging caliper in the opposite direction of the gripping caliper🤷🏻♂️its weird
It’s easy to find the hanging caliper, you can feel the heat from it by putting your hand on the wheel, it will also smell like a burnt clutch
@@RCBGarage Yes it will be scorching hot.Lugnut Beauty rings may melt and spin off as well.
Did it fix your issue?
This is a golden nugget
Thank you so much for your help
Glad I could help
My F150 is 2014 stx 4x4 3.7 idk if mine is equipped because it's not Ecoboost but I've done Caliper, rotors and pads been 3 weeks haven't any problems till today coming home. This gives me hope
Caliper stuck here as well, 2014 f150 eco, 2021 FrontRight stuck, master cylinder and caliper/lines replaced. now 2023 front left stuck, plus i have Evap codes, would this pump also throw codes for that? P144c/P0131
Thanks for sharing!
Does it pull to the side that's bad when you hit the brakes?
I've been having the same issue on my 2010 f150 lariat front passenger......hopefully this helps the problem....getting tired of this BS .....lol . Thank you
Glad it helped
Does this also apply to a 2014 5.0?
Thanks. I'm having the same problem on driver side on my 2011
thank you I sure hope this is the problem I got a smokin hot brake!
Change the rubber break line first to eliminate that being the issue
Thank you brother,. For your video God bless you ,. Jesus loves you blessings
Same to you!
what are the chances my 2015 mini Cooper has this pump cause everything you described I have been chasing for three months and well I am still locked up drivers side front caliper we will find out 2day most of all I wanna say thank you very much you and your video have given me a little light at the end of this tunnel call my car before I watched your video I wanna say I didn't give up I was pausing and reflecting for a while cuz at times this problem was affecting my life negatively thank you again I am going after lt again needless to the brake Gods have been kicking my ass but you have given hope Terry young
YES! THANK YOU!!!!
Hey man great video! I know it’s been a couple years since you’ve posted but just wondering if you recommend replacing the rear lines too?
I changed the front 2 rubber brake lines and it seemed to fix the issue for a bit but the famous screeching and brake staying engaged has returned only after driving for about 20-30min.
Do you think it’s the pump?
Try flushing the fluid
Good job having the same issue
Thank you for this video. I have a 2011 F150 with a 3.7 V6. I had the same problem. Left front caliper locking up. I replace the caliper, pads, brake hose and pads. Flushed the fluid. It seemed ok for a week or so. Now its locking up again. Saw you video and checked out my truck. I don't think it has a vacuum pump. I guessing the 3.7 ltr doesn't. Checked the relay box and it doesn't have a relay in spot 25. Any other suggestions?
It might be the distribution block.
This just happened to me this morning on my way to work. Both calipers hanging up I think but only moving forward. At least when I backed up about 10' they were smooth and normal.
What is the part called again
Thank you
Same thing is happening to my friend's 2011 Ford expedition the front driver side caliper is locking up sir it's got the big v8 what you did on your pickup would we be doing the same procedure ?
I would start with replacing the rubber brake line
I'm suspect I'm having the same issue. Will start with the rubber line, but I for sure need new pads/rotors and vacuum pump. Not sure on the caliper yet. Do you think there's a way to keep the vacuum pump from failing regularly? like maybe a homemade housing or something to keep the elements out?
If all the plastic and rubber guards are in place that should be all you need for protection
I have a 2007 f150 4x4 xlt, I now have a problem with my brakes when I stop on a hill in the snow, my brakes are making a fast anti-locking noise and not stoping the truck properly, I have all new rotors and brakes all the way around. also, I just had my iwe replaced as well,4x4 was not working properly, I wonder if this could be my problem, I originally thought I have a brake bleeding problem all of a sudden, but when it's not snowing or on a hill, it stops on a dime, I also have a winding noise like you would hear from a power steering pump but there is nothing wrong with the pump, did you hear this noise as well. ty for the vid.
Sounds like you may have an antilock actuator pump issue. It could be from a bad wheel sensor. The IWE is inside the front wheel hub, the ABS speed sensor may have been damaged when that repair was done. Its a $30 item, I would start by replacing that and see if it fixes the problem.
@@RCBGarage ty i will do just that
I have a 2011 5.0 lariat same problem the pads are burning the rotor.
My brakes lock but not my steering wheeel what could it be ?
I have a 06 F 150 that my rear passenger keeps hanging up I have been chasing this issue and cannot figure out why this keeps happening..new calipers pads rotors 3 times flushed fluids also I need help.
Replace the brake line. Problem solved
Same with my 2007 f150. Front driver brake is dragging intermittently.
Christ. Does the 2010 svt raptor have this? I've got the 6.2L
On my uncle's 2005 F-150, sometimes when he puts the truck in "Drive" and releases brake pedal, truck doesn't move, as if something is holding it.(parking brake isn't engaged) He needs to accelerate a bit more to make it move. We lifted the vehicle in the air and put it in Neutral, and all wheels seem to spin freely, didn't feel any drag. Almost a year ago we changed front and rear differential fluid and truck was fine, until very recently. Could it be 4x4 issue or similar to your issue?
I am not that familiar with the 2005, Check to see if you have hill assist. It is usually included with the towing package. It will hold the front brakes on a hill to prevent rolling back when pulling a trailer. It releases when you give the truck gas. Sounds like your uncles might be malfunctioning. I don't know much about hill assist other than the onboard computer controls it. Sorry.
dealing with this now... new caliper, brakes, rotors, and a bad flexline...but the left caliper is still dragging like fluid has a check valve . the vacuum pump does not work, but how does the pump effect RELEASE? I understand the vacuum ASSIST, but release???
I don't know exactly how the system works. I changed everything that you mentioned as well as the pump and I haven't had the issue again. Its been over 10 months now.
Check that the camel bump pads are on the inside
Mine is locking up but no humming noise that you indicated do could it just be the vacuum hose?
Start by replacing the rubber caliper hose.
Excellent video what years have that pump
I am not sure what years or engine sizes have it.
Is there a part number or website that you got the part from? I am having an issue finding it? Is there a specific name for the part?
www.rockauto.com/en/parts/motorcraft,BRPV30,vacuum+pump,5172
Thank you for your Video it helps a lot.
You are welcome!
So I replaced mine but when i let off the break it still stays for 3 to 5 seconds. Got new caliper and didn't fix as well. Any thoughts??
Did you replace the rubber brake line?
I'm having exact same issue thanks, question? Can I just remove the fuse and drive until part comes in. Thanks again.
Have you replaced the rubber brake line?
Same.
I have a 2011 f150 with a 5.0 with the same problem, I don't have that pump, so now its been months later did your problem stay away by changing the pump? I don't see any comments from others saying that pump solved their problem, my problem started with the front right locking up and I changed calipers, pads, did back brakes too, didn't fix it, so then the next step was the rubber line and that helped, it went from being locked up to just dragging and what do you know now the left one is starting to do the same thing which makes me wonder if its ABS related since I believe that alternates braking from wheel to wheel.
I haven’t had an issue since I fixed it. Been a couple years now. I would imagine if your ABS module was bad it would throw a CEL code.
@@RCBGarage thanks for the quick reply, no codes at all , it's got me stumped. If it was an old school mechanical truck it would be an easy fix so I have to believe it's an electrical problem.
Sounds EXACTLY like my problem. Headed Rock Auto to order
Did it fix it?
What’s the name of that part ?
Had same problem but my mechanic said the brake shoes where on backwards
Just started to have the same issue. My wife said she could hear a hissing sound and it felt like a caliper was locking up only this is on the passenger side.
I’m having the same issue with my 2014 3.5 Passenger front caliper keeps freezing up. My relay #25 is empty in fuse box under the hood
Same here. Did you ever figure it out?
Thanks for sharing, what is that part call?
Vacuum pump, Rock Auto part number VCP 185
What’s the name of that part
I have 2012 stx 4x4 BUT I don't have tis pump.
I have a 2011 f150 but it done look like I have that part but my front caliper keeps on sticking
Change the rubber brake line first and go from there
Hey man I’m having the same exact issue but I did what u did and removed the fuse thing number 25 and when I put the brake and took it off the wheel still didn’t move.
Change your rubber line going to the caliper first.
2012 lariat I’ve changed all 4 roters, all 4 pads, and my bearings! Brakes smoking every time…. And bro I think u figured it out. I hope it’s a recall part so I can get it fixed on the free!
Edit: what’s the pumps name exactly?
Before you start throwing parts at it...…change the rubber brake line on the caliper that if locking up.
I removed #25 relay but my brakes didn’t release. Would that mean my master cylinder is bad?
No it would mean your rubber brake line is bad! Ford knows the lines a garbage, when you have your pads replaced at the dealer they always do the rubber lines as well.
For your information the front brake pads will lock up if you put the pad with the bumps on it outside. The outside pad is smooth and the inside pad has the camel bumps. The vacuum pump is to ad vacuum to the power brake booster.
Thanks for your feed back. The locking up issues happens on these trucks before the pads and rotors are changed. 90% of the time it is the rubber brake line that is causing this issue. On my truck the vacuum pump, caliper and line all went bad.
Life saver , i changed callipers brake lines etc an this problem keeps coming back .
Did the vacuum pump fix it?
Is this the same for the 8 cylinder trucks too?
I am not 100% sure about 8 cylinder trucks. Take a look behind the drivers side wheel well and see if you have the pump.
No. At least not on the 5.0, there is no vacuum pump
I’m having the same problem but on a 5.0
Mine is 06 with stock calipers I believe 150k mile. Rotors and discs are relatively new
Replace rubber brake line
@@RCBGarageok , sounds like don’t have a pump to worry about ? Your thinking it’s just the line ? What about caliper ? Shoot I’d rather not replace calipers if it’s just a brake line
Is there a separate pump for both front tires?
There is only one pump
What’s the name of the pump
yep I'm in that money pit right now.
I have a 1999 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6 l brakes are locking up dragging whatever you want to call it.
bought new brake pads, but new calipers, but hub and disassembly, replace the bearings greased it and sealed, new brake hose, flush the brake lines twice since I bought a new master cylinder, I thought it was the glide pins on the bracket so I bought new bracket.
so the cause of mine breaks dragging I been monitoring for the last 2 weeks was they will heat up on my way to work 10 minutes I counted breaking at least 10 times and the brakes would start to lock up dragging you can hear it as my car rolling down the road making screeching sound embarrassing.
when I get to a destination I pull over parked the car and check the temperature of the disc.
the both discs are heating up at the same temperature from 100 degrees sometimes up to 190.
funny thing about it both discs are heating up at the same temperature so I know for a fact it has to be something with a chip or some kind of sensor which could be the ABS brakes module.
saw RUclips link some guy pulled out the 102 fuse inside the hood compartment that controls the ABS and it will disable it something I'm going to try out tonight I spent over $900 trying to get this truck back to normal I was about to buy a new power booster but I decided to look at more videos to see the cause so far I think it's my ABS brake system malfunctioning causing my brakes to lock up soon as I get in the truck it squeaks all the way to work and get worse when I get there good thing it's only 10 minutes drive but when I have to pick up my kids from school I am just ducking for cover such an embarrassing noise

@@starguy9
Hey Bud you followed up good.
I'm going to be honest with you. I gave my mechanic$1,000 I told him test my ABS brake module pump. He tells me it's not the problem it's my master cylinder. I told him I put a new one in from O'Reilly's Auto. He tells me they go through bad manufacturing and it could be the problem. He is going to replace it on Thursday or Friday when it gets delivered. I told him my brakes are binding up and sometimes locking up for a few seconds. We park it and he bleeds both front brakes he says I have a dual brake master cylinder. He says the brake fluid is not returning back to the master cylinder that's what's causing it to bind up.
Check back with me after this weekend is over I will test drive it when he's all finished.
I know I'm at the tail end of this problem it should be solved. If you replace the brake master cylinder and it's not the problem I'm sure it's the ABS brake module. Alright but hope you follow up cross 🤞
@@Michael_J_M14 not for mine I changed both front left and right still have the issues.
I think it's my ABS brake module pump.
My mechanic is going to change out the master cylinder this Thursday or Friday when it gets delivered follow up in a few days.

You will need to replace the front pads drivers rotor and caliper. Once you over heat them they are done. MAKE Sure you replace the rubber brake line. Do all these first before you replace pump.
Can you by pass it until you order the part
No you need vacuum to run the booster.
I change this pump on my 2012 and it made NO effect. The right front is still sticking.
