Part of the fun of this game was how absurd it was. For instance, crashing into a random car that's slowly going up a hill (just as it's nearing the top) will send it flying forever. Also, I remember there being a weird memory leak in the game: you go into quick race mode split-screen, restart the race 10 or so times, and each restart, it lags more and more, until eventually you're playing at 1 fps. Having said that, I loved how specific the customizations could be with autosculpt or whatever it was. And the long stretches of highway between the islands were fun to speed around with the koenigsegg and zonda.
Its not fun when i play the "save carmen" mission and she dies instantly since the enemy ai decides to rubberband to her at lightspeed. But there are plenty of funny glitches and good exploits. I found an exploit to guarantee a way to escape the cops by using the bridge (the one from the end of MW) and jump across it and wait out the evade bar to fill up since 99% of the time the cops cannot cross over. Only the chopper can follow you but the chopper is on a timer so yeah. That scene where the cop continues to chase you after the pursuit is over almost reminds me of that stray dog that follows you home from school. It's almost cute.
Due to financial stresses of modern (for that time) game development budgets any outsourced version would not get a roasting by the IP owner and initiator of the outsourced development. Need for Speed : Most Wanted on the PS2 shows what it should have been like, Carbon is not bad too but as it takes place during night scenes only it is easier to get away with lower spec hardware. Whoever did NFS Undercover for PS2 certainly did not hit that Most Wanted level of quality, in both senses of the phrase!
I remember feeling betrayed and being sad after discovering online in 2008 how much better and different the "main" version of undercover was compared to my ps2 version. Still loved the game and played the hell out of it. For whatever reason I never encountered the bugs you listed or I just don't remember.
Some of the assets from the main port of NFS Undercover were "borrowed" from Burnout Paradise, such as the traffic cars for example, and the texture details of the traffic cars are the same as Underground 2.
I found that on the Wii version, on some tracks you could drive faster than the game loads the map, which leads to you driving into nowhere... Also, it was very easy to crash the game (reproducibly!).
Feeling goosebumps already thanks to the music playing in the background: - Amon Tobin - Mighty Micro People - Innerpartysystem - This Empty Love - Nine Inch Nails - The Mark Has Been Made - Gary Numan / Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric?
Man... this brings back a strange memory. I remember discussing this game before launch on some message board, and there was one fine fellow there who had some bizarre ideas. He argued that the ps2 had some kind of untapped power which would keep it viable long into the 7th generation (I assume until the ps3's untapped power could finally be uh, tapped). He went on these long technobabble rants about the Emotion Engine along with some kind of special chip in the ps2 that could allow it to run DX10 level graphics, only restricted to 1080i. He claimed that this version of the game would be nearly identical to the ps3 version and that he had inside knowledge of many more ports of newer games that were in the works for the older console, such as FF13. He said that developers had only used up to 1/4 of it's true power as Sony had put limits on it or some kind of jazz. I wonder what happened to that guy... I just went down a rabbit hole of old forums I used to haunt trying to find that thread with no luck. I'd love to have seen his reaction to the final product. He'd probably chalk it up to that old classic line: "lazy devs" lol. I can almost guarantee that it was some kid who only had a ps2 and he wanted it to stay relevant so badly that he talked himself into believing this stuff. I bet once he finally got a ps3 he said the same things about the Cell long after the 8th gen consoles were in most homes. Actually I knew a few people who evangelized the holy Cell and all of it's miraculous feats, so he wouldn't have been alone there.
I legit loved both versions of the game when I was a kid. But now you pointed out the obvious flaws in the game which I was blindly in love with, I kinda feel stupid and a bit torn. I feel like a very tiny, insignificant part of my gaming life is shredded away. Anyways, I totally agree with you 100% and openly accept the criticism and judgment that you offer. Thanks for reminding what the game WAS for me back in the day as well as putting things a little bit in perspective, when you see it TODAY. It’s kinda funny though. Cheers and a very Happy New year to all fellow NFS lovers and gamers.
Time has a way of doing that to things you liked as a kid. God knows time poked holes in my childhood adoration of Test Drive 6 and Off-Road 3. I'm glad I could bring back some memories for ya, happy new year.

The first review I can agree with. You listed all the good and bad stuff about the game, although I have to say some things never happened to me, like Chase bugging out and that stuff and I never had a problem escaping the police. Very good review, not complaining about stuff that happened to you during a playthrough that never happened to anyone else, like most other reviews. I have to say I prefer the PS2 version over the new PC version. Thank you for the probably only REAL review of this game!
At the time in 2008 I had no PC or console powerful enough to play the bigger version of Undercover. So I was stuck with PS2 version. Even if the map was asset flipped, the game was lovable. And it also introduced me to Pendulum and Nine Inch Nails music
15:49 This actually goes for all the cars during that mission. Edit: I had also noticed that you never mentioned that, on the Wii version, the Livery on Chase's Porsche was basically copied and recolored from Most Wanted's BMW M3. Dunno what happened there, but at least it looks cool. Though it seems to be fixed on the PS2 version with its own livery.
3:47 actually, that lower section of the map looks like a modified City Core from Underground 2, it has a highway outline resembling City Core, with a few modifications to the highway from Downtown Rockport, and has Downtown Rockport's inner section of the city, don't know if anyone else sees it but to me that section looks like a mash up of Underground 2 and Downtown Rockport
There are definitely some UG2 assets at play here, too. It's mostly Most Wanted, and I cut the mention of UG2 stuff because this video was getting really long, but it's there.
I respect your opinion on Need For Speed: Undercover, it may not be the greatest racing game of all time but I love it at the end of the day and I think it’s one of the most underrated Need For Speed games I’ve ever played. I got the game downloaded on my Xbox 360 and I can’t wait to play it on the PlayStation 2 when I get the chance.
I bought the Wii version of this game instead of Mario Kart when I was a kid, and although I massively regret it, it did introduce me to NIN so it wasn't a waste
The Undercover's PSP port was a big part of my childhood because it's my first and only PSP racing game at that time. And it's really interesting to see the difference between the PSP version I played and the PS2 version shown in the video. PS2 version seemed to have much better lineup of vehicles compared to PSP, and nearly all cars that's in the PSP version is in PS2 as well. The PSP version lacked classic muscle cars, with the '67 Mustang being the only one (and that Mustang is SERIOUSLY EASY to flip over) in game. Though although with some funny glitches here and there, it still feels a much more polished and complete game in comparison, and the cops are pretty balanced as well. (Though you have to escape them with either speed alone or tricks to lure them onto the wrong road and gives you more time to escape, because there's no breakable objects that can used to disable police vehicles.)
I've never played any other version of Need For Speed: Undercover, I have only played the PS2 version, I don't remember any major issues with it, it felt like NFS: Carbon but modified. Although I do remember feeling like the game was really short, and was a bit disappointed by it. After seeing this video I now realise just how bad it is/was....
Man, you know what? It was one of my favorite games, i played it for years on the wii and was my first need for speed. It was awesome. Everything of it. I was a child and it was a masterpiece

That scene where the cop continues to chase you after the pursuit is over almost reminds me of that stray dog that follows you home from school. It's almost cute.
and in the end we all had more fun with the last gen version...
VERY DANGEOURS!!!!
Reused assets would be okay if they took more time. This version actually looks pretty fun.
@Merc Kitsuné playrd this on the wii and the cops would easily outrun you on a flat
Take a look at Carbon Own the City for the PSP, it also uses Rockport's map, and it's still by far the best NFS for the PSP
@Merc Kitsuné To be fair, the same thing happens in Carbon
Due to financial stresses of modern (for that time) game development budgets any outsourced version would not get a roasting by the IP owner and initiator of the outsourced development. Need for Speed : Most Wanted on the PS2 shows what it should have been like, Carbon is not bad too but as it takes place during night scenes only it is easier to get away with lower spec hardware. Whoever did NFS Undercover for PS2 certainly did not hit that Most Wanted level of quality, in both senses of the phrase!
ps2 version is like: "is our game too easy? how bout we crank it up a notch"
They reused assets from other games
9:24 made my day
Teacher: I've brought candy in for class today, please line up to get some--
Class: 14:49
I found that on the Wii version, on some tracks you could drive faster than the game loads the map, which leads to you driving into nowhere...
Also, it was very easy to crash the game (reproducibly!).
Feeling goosebumps already thanks to the music playing in the background:
- Amon Tobin - Mighty Micro People
- Innerpartysystem - This Empty Love
- Nine Inch Nails - The Mark Has Been Made
- Gary Numan / Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric?
I have The Mark Has Been Made playing in my head 24/7 so I thought I was hearing things
Man... this brings back a strange memory.
The cuts of you doing random stuff while the car was still there was hilarious
7:10 first the Underground java theme and then singing a Carbon soundtrack, in an Undercover video
Shit's wild,i know.
7:25 Discord notification caught on the clip lol i checked my 2nd monitor immediately xD
Stop flexin on me for not having a second monitor :^(
When I used to play this game I didn't even really play it for the missions, I just liked to play Free Roam and multi-player with my friend.
194 911 GT2 sold to the US
Kacey: I'm about to end this man's whole career 13:35
I literally did not know they released fifa 14 for the PS2. That is crazy and odd but I think it’s really coo how they didn’t give up on one of the best consoles ever
Dude man your channel is dope I can’t believe how small you are rn, alot of effort goes into these vids. Hopefully you’ll be able to blossom buddy
7:10 *KURUHS would like to know your location*
XD
hi fellow furry
Landon Marshall oh hi there lmao
Just discovered your channel, great content, subscribed! I am a big fan of digging deep into budget games/bad/unfinished ports, so your channel basically feels like home
Undercover for ps2 was "What if Most Wanted was really bad", really, the map is the "same"
No. Undercover is better because it doesn't break like NFS Most Wanted on PS2
@@subieasunayuukiYou on drugs or something? You look like a full on retard and hell you make people's with down syndrome look like einstein.
@@subieasunayuukiShut up kid
@@subieasunayuukiNo it's not.
@@subieasunayuukiJUST STOP BEIN DELUSIONAL!!!
3:00 The Sims 3 DS port that Exient made is also worth praising, it's pretty impressive for a system and it also has an open-world (even the 3DS version lacks the open-world component).
Hell yeah that underground 2 java song
great video
8:09 Correction, this is actually a Sony VAIO UMPC, it's a full windows xp handheld pc.
it's optionally capable of mobile data, but never had phone call support.
I miss the turbo spooling noise from the best sounded car, renault clio v2. Sounded like my real car
I remember the ps2 version well, the shadows went THOUGH the wheels, so it always looked like your car had sunken into the road.
Can't wait for ''Need for Speed Undercover's Half-Baked PC Version'' Kappa
hahaha. That one is more depressing than interesting.
@@Kaceydotme More like Half-Baked patched version, especially because the AI opponents get to speed up like crazy and easily making certain Highway Battles only winnable because they total themselves.
…Yeah, in all honesty you'll need the Dominator Corvette Z06 and/or the Speed Machine 911 GT2 in versions 1.0.1.18 and 1.1.2.1 (the latter is only in the Origin version). And the Boss Car Bundle is unavailable now unless you play the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions.
@@TheBreakingBenny i always hate it when i'm trying to escape a pursuit on PC,and roadblocks spawn infront of me,and the cops somehow know exactly where i am.
@@arushamm Insane as fuck.
@@TheBreakingBenny some crazy shit mate.to be fair, cops in carbon always spawn somewhere infront of a nearby hiding spot in cooldown,or just on the same road as me.and roadblocks spawn infront of me in MW as well.but atleast the cops in MW suddenly don't spawn right in front of me.
The opening music of this video instantly gave me flash backs especially Need For Speed Undercover in the DS, I remember playing this on the PC aswell.
I was expecting a beta build so I skipped ahead and heard the part about the minimap + reused world... it's crazy to think the game released in this state...
I thought I'd love this game, but I too bought the PS2 version... Only remember I did, just because I saw the thumbnail for this. Also, "The Mark Has Been Made" is a great NIN song, great choice there...
I actually hated it when i escaped too easily i wanted to have more fun with them coppas,Kacey is glad that the cops chased her more than me.
NASCAR 08 on the PS2. Man a whole lot of memories with that one. Good to see that Exient did decent work with other titles.
14:49
*GTA SA Flashbacks have come across your way!*
7:05 Something like this happened to me in Undercover PSP but instead it was every single opponent that got stuck
7:25
Discord notification?
At the time in 2008 I had no PC or console powerful enough to play the bigger version of Undercover. So I was stuck with PS2 version. Even if the map was asset flipped, the game was lovable. And it also introduced me to Pendulum and Nine Inch Nails music
14:31 this one had me rolling. That cop went instant dog pile mode. XD
I’ve replayed this game like 8 or so times I just can’t get enough of it
15:49 This actually goes for all the cars during that mission.
Undercover had one of the best out-of-game/garage ost out of every other nfs game
Think you came up with a new Need for Speed title, Need For Speed: Endless Pursuit
Racer: *BREATHES*
Police: Dispatch, i've got 20 on that suspect
14:33 That's the problem I had while playing Undercover!
Finallyyy somebody talking about this version!
i PLAYED BOTH THE PORTS AND LOVE EM FOR NOSTALGIA
This version is better than Xbox 360 and ps3 version
Idc what anyone says.this game was my childhood. Its gold
ps2 undercover is like the most wanted meme version, shit is going down everywhere lol
I KNEW IT! I knew that when I first saw Undercover's map, it looked really familiar!
Kid: “Mom, can we get NFS Undercover?”
Mom: “We have NFS Undercover at home.”
NFS Undercover at home:
Me:Alright,this one is fine too.
14:15 not only was it flying faster than it would be allowed to in urban areas, it was flying faster than physics would allow them to.
14:49
The very second after that cop touched your car, another flies in and slams into you. I laughed way too hard.
I bought the Wii version of this game instead of Mario Kart when I was a kid, and although I massively regret it, it did introduce me to NIN so it wasn't a waste
"EVERYONE"
"VERY DANGEROUS"
haha
Wasn't the '77 Firebird also in PSP's version of Undercover?
So this is like the sonic 06 of the need for speed franchise
jesus this is golden, you got a new subscriber
9:01 VERY DANGEROUS
One of the best game reviews I have ever seen on youtube. You gained a follower in me.
Keep up the great work
I've never played any other version of Need For Speed: Undercover, I have only played the PS2 version, I don't remember any major issues with it, it felt like NFS: Carbon but modified.
I remember hitting Maggie Q's Car so hard head on it when flying that her car went pretty far away +... game crashed!!
Shit happens
It is more funny when u realize that she just turned the camera and showed that there were no cops
I'd just like to point out that this is the first Need for Speed game I've seen footage of that the R34 motor actually sounds like an RB26. I'm very impressed.
