It's not just about how soon you die, it's also about how you feel while you are alive. You can eat crappy food and still be "vegan;" vegan diets are not all alike.
Word. You can eat healthy and be pessimistic. The best health one can have is mental health and be happy. My great grandfather lived up to 102 years. He was omnivore. Consumed both vegetables, fruits, grains , and meat. But he was also very happy and stress free
It's amazing seeing how consistent Dr. Gregor has been in his advocacy for better health over 20 years. His entertaining mannerisms and commitment to good science is just the same today as it was back then in 2003.
In 2006 I was diagnosed with cancer and was told 5 years WITH chemo AND radiation. I rejected bothjn and sought a kind resourceful, LOCAL practitioner who held me accountable and faithful to an ALL plant based vegan diet. This was not hard for me considering the alternative. At the end of 7-8 months I went to a leading cancer clinic in the area for a 2nd option and was told there was "no" cancer to be seen. I chose a different hospital for this opinion because I wanted that opinion to not be biased by the first. This is 13 years later. Good clean foods, gave up sedentary life, meditated, gave up TV at home to lessen amount of negative (no need to know ideas to lessen unneeded stress), and gave thanks everyday to my Creator for the healing I was receiving everyday. By the way, volunteering to help someone else during this time can also take thoughts off of yourself. Another thing--- being labelled as a non-compliant patient can alienate you from convention medicine practitioners. ?
Awesome but several researchers looked into this and found these resilts arent reproducoble. Lots of ppl indo what you did and still die. Yourbimmunevsystem saved you, count yourself lucky.
Stay blessed. Also in today’s environment being non-compliant kept you alive and healthy. Following the medical model if you die within 5 years they are doing their job. You may have lost your hair from radiation, been physically ill from the chemo and made your insurance company very rich and die anyway and no doctors could be sued because you did what they told you to do. Our body can develop cancer all the time. Thank goodness with strong immune system and healthy foods, good attitude we over come the cancer. Stay Blessed!
OMG this guy is my new favourite guy. May have missed his calling as an entertainer but that's to the benefit of anyone interested in health and nutrition. He's so adorable
yeah I like him a lot. But some of the hate on here just because of the way he talks or just plain anti-vegan bullshit...I just don't bother with comments anymore...except this one :D
Eating Vegan and eating healthy is not the same thing. As he explains in the video. :) therefore the statistics can't really be credible for those who eat plant based. I know a lot of overweight unhealthy vegans, so therefore I don't care about this mortality rates statistics because I see first hand the difference between a healthy and unhealthy vegan. The differences are huge.
I agree. Been vegetarian for sixty-five years, but decided to go vegan, and find it far easier than expected. I am obsessed with reading about nutrition and viewing youtube channels on the topic, and the influence of diet on cancer and heart disease.
I am so impressed with this lecture. This is the finest example of intellectual honesty and courage that I have ever seen. It’s hard in academia to swim upstream and much of what he is saying contradicts his vegan peers. That takes tremendous courage and integrity. I am so grateful to have this information.
Thank you Dr. Gregor for working so hard to help people understand all of the research out there that can improve our health!!! Folks - How would you feel if you did all this work to read research results and make videos to explain them and then people made fun of you? Let's support this good doctor - he is doing so much work for all of us! :)

Diane Peiffer id go a step further and say that I love his voice and his message. The most stimulating thing I've encountered this week, and that's saying something!
Douglas of Avalon as are you, for generalising, not all of us are morons. Just the vegans and liberals. lol...his arrogant condescending manner, (common among elitist liberal vegan crowd) is equally as his whiney, sing songy voice. I have to listen at 1.5 speed to get through his videos. some are pretty good but huge bias against. Meat eaters.
fon d i am sure u must have felt very proud and happy when he initially stated the facts that were in favour of meat eaters but when he explained everything (which i am quite sure went over your head) you became agitated because he was explaining that u can lead a way healthier life by going vegan which made u insecure so u make fun of him btw u meat eaters are morons who think that they have any right to kill an animal just because of taste and convinience and u have to be so dumb to call him bias i also see u have posted this comment about 2-3 weeks ago and do u know when he delivered this speech ? maybe watch it again and we have come a long way since then now we have alternatives of every animal products in 2018 so we don't need any animal products anymore if u r not lazy just do your own reasearch instead of calling someone bias
+Fon D Maybe the "bias" is based on the fact he was employed by the meat industry whilst at University and the 350,000 studies he and his team analyse. Look he isn't forcing anyone to become Vegan but there are so many studies on high protein diets and the health risks associated with them. Nobel Laureate Dr Valter Longo probably is one of the world experts on Autophagy and Cancer treatment. He says the same. The blue zones also bare testament to this research. I am not Vegan btw but I do eat a primarily plant based diet and there is no question if you want to avoid age related illness for as long as possible you need to keep animal protein to about 5-10% of your diet.
@@ndigotribe because he has a whole instruction book for being vegan, you have to eat seaweed every day for iodine, 2 brazil nuts for selenium, a tablespoon of grinded flax seeds etc etc, and you have to take b12, d, and dha supplements, all he does is make me stress and make me feel like im deficient in everything, before i discovered this guy i thought i was superman on this diet, now i feel like im deficient in everything, hes a fuckhead bald nerd with inch thick glasses that plays with fear mongering tactics and complications to sell his books, i fucking hate him

Good day I was watching this video and then my neighbor came and we watched it together. He said this post really changed his life and it touched my heart. My village people are so grateful. Am proud to say cool post wow thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge 🥰 from the villagers of kikambu
I love his voice. I recently bought a copy of his book How Not To Die and I am not willing to put it down until I absorb every bit of information the book offers.
Dr. Greger should not promote canola as it is a highly processed oil. Also, he demonizes coconut oil which has neither omega 6 nor omega 3 fatty acid content, but is loaded with nutritional benefits. Pacific Islanders eat a lot of coconut products but have very low stroke or heart disease tendencies. The other content he presents is very informative.
Now in the in this year of 2022 hight sat fat is associated with intramyocellu lipids causeind diabetes. You only one a small part of coconut oil is anti inflammatory when consuming raw
I’m vegan and I watched this while eating flaxseed chips cooked in cottonseed oil and drinking flax milk. I’m pretty sure my omega 6/omega 3 ratio is about a 50:1 based on how oily these chips are. Very interesting! I’m going to have to look up more recent research and see if his 2003 hypothesis has been tested.

I know I already replied to this. But I wanted to say thank you again. I didn't know this was an option. Since I learned this from you, I now listen to many videos at faster speed. My Italian lessons go so much faster. I can listen to a video twice in the same time I did once before. Thank you again. ☺
I haven't started grinding my flaxseed yet, so I eat Chia seeds. I've had to tell myself it was OK when his voice gets a bit screechy, but I love the way he accents the most important things that we need to hear! A lot of great info!!!
This video should be taken down immediately. It is from 2003, which is ancient in the timeline of scientific progress. Dr. Greger has gone through a significant evolution since then and makes very different recommendations now in terms of oils, for example. Greger's most up-to-date summaries of the scientific nutrition research can be found at www.nutritionfacts.org. At that website, viewers can click "View Transcript" to read the video transcript in order not to listen to Greger's voice, which many find annoying.

You are so right, if every one was a clone/or sounded monotone like those computer generated narrators this world will soooooooo f#$king boring. Love and peace.
No words can express how much I respect Dr Gregor. I ‘discovered’ him last year on my healing journey from lymphoma. I love his passion and the way he conveys his presentations. His new cookbook recipes are fantastic and everything he does is for free with all profits to charity. What dedication eh. I am so grateful to his Gran, if she hadn’t reversed her heart disease with her diet, Dr Gregor probably wouldn’t be doing this. She would be very proud of you. Keep on being you Dr Gregor, who gives a toss of critics - you are unique and brilliant!
Vegetarians have a high hip fracture rate because they lack the omega 6 fat AA (arachidonic acid), only in meat and in animal fat. In a study, the men who ate the most arachidonic acid had 80% fewer hip fractures! Also, we make nearly zero DHA, and extremely little EPA, from flax seeds, because the D6D enzyme is very low functioning. Also, regarding cancer, vegetarians eat a very high arginine and low lysine diet, and arginine increases inflammatory nitric oxide, which feeds cancer cells and viruses. Also, taurine, only in meat and fish, is needed to prevent blood clots and stroke, and the body can't make enough of it. And many more reasons to eat meat.
You know what's interesting, BEFORE I read any comments I stopped and thought to myself how much I enjoyed, not only the content of what he was saying, but the way he delivered his content with his voice. I actually thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't find it hard to understand or follow. No idea what other people are talking about, I found this very stimulating.
People love smooth talkers without accent, led as sheep into a ravine. We get bored in 10 seconds or less nowadays, our attentionspan is smaller than that of a one day fly.

That Dr. Gregor is so entertaining Makes his message so easy to grasp and retain. He goes so fast and there is so much information, it’s very helpful to listen to his lectures at least twice. A lot to learn.
I always enjoy Dr. Greger. None of his lectures are ever boring as he brings drama and life to every statement he makes. Thanks for this video. I have learned so much, especially about B12. My husband and I immediately went and bought some Vegan B12 supplements after this lecture!!
Love this guy’s energy! At first I was like 😳 it as you keep watching him and his credibility becomes obvious he definitely grows on you! All of this stuff my college A&P professor taught us but not wrapped up in the vegan context! I was definitely rusty on this material and never heard of these studies until this video! Thanks for making this video!!!!!!! Excellent job!!!!!!!
Wow. This was so helpful. Of course now I’m pretty sure I’m way less healthy than I thought buuuut lol, at least now I have recommendations to improve things
Dr John Bergman's videos show how cholesterol is good for people, not fake fats, or veggie oils, but real butter, fish, etc, and raw veggies and fruits and wholesome cooked foods. I appreciate the scientific studies that Dr. Greger honestly rolls out for all to see. He's great and like other mavericks really wants people to get well, even if wellness provides fewer profits.
Who doesn't like a moss covered rock sucking once in awhile. But alas, I found another option. Apparently there's something called breatharian. No food or water needed for the rest of your life.....
What isn't are the research pages of Loma Linda University. They've done extensive research over many years on thousands of Americans with several types of diets. The conclusion is much the same as what's presented in "what the health' although a lot more objective, profound and professional. What the health is a good way to show it to the masses, they need that type of exaggeration somehow, but the underlying truth is there, for sure!
I changed my lifestyle to vegan whole food in nineteen seventy-nine. When I met my husband he was fearful he would die of a heart attack at a young age & on a diet of Lipton's, steakhouse sirloin, canned veges, fried catfish, frozen veges, broiled lobster tail, artificial sweetener, broiled swordfish, Maruchen/Nissan, oily creamers, pots full of coffee, fried eggs & bacon, gallons whole pasteurized buy anywhere milk, bottles full of hard liquor, Planters dry roasted peanuts, spicy chips, cola, lots of BC powders & a little fresh lemon. Within five years of being with him I got lab results of heart disease. In that time we ate with Jay Dinshah at a very creative seitan restaurant. Two thousand-six I switched diet for ultra low fiber, ultra low carb, ultra high cholesterol, daily flesh etc. My heart disease left. Hubby continued his seitanish style alky diet. He died of a heart attack last year. Did I mention he changed his diet to veganish (sometimes he bought packaged food with bits of dairy added as non main ingredients) in the beginning? My phone is dying, but thanks for trying to help ppl. Many years ago my Dad passed away & we discussed you too.
one thing never get mention veggies are subjected to more pesticides herbicides insecticides and GM food so are posion a lot more , I only eat organic vegetables and fruit
David Jones, you just activated the bells and whistles. Veganism seems to have caught on with college kids, some of who are on limited income. They look for bargains. As long as there's no meat or dairy involved, they think they are eating healthy, and since organic is pricey, they don't look for non gmo and organic veggies and fruit. Vegans don't just eat whole foods. They also buy store brands of prepared food, like pasta or whatever is on sale, instead of researching where they can get healthy alternatives online at reasonable prices. I recommend sweet potato/buckwheat and sweet potato/artichoke heart pasta instead of store brand pasta made with wheat. I don't trust soy products or corn, but there are so many healthy choices these days. An energy bar, for instance, isn't healthy if it has soy, canola oil, or sugar in it. Low fat yogurt has extra sugar to compensate for the lack of flavor. Low fat and fat free is a joke. It does nothing for your health or your taste buds. One more thing, olive oil is good for you but you shouldn't cook with it, as triglycerides form when the oil is heated enough to cook the food. I always add my extra virgin olive oil or even regular olive oil after the cooking is done. It gives a pot of lentil soup a better flavor and aroma and makes a big difference. Last, but not least, coconut oil is healthy, good for cooking, baking and frying, and you can get buttery flavored coconut oil, which is made with organic coconut and organic butter, and it tastes great on toast.
I started down the organic road some years back after suffering with erregular heart rate , I am a realist and after all tests on my heart found nothing but an healthy heart I decided that this was just a symptom of a body under stress, of course doctors wouldn't agree and only see the drug pathway , they are wrong big time just look around you heart disease cancers dementia all spiralling out of control yet no one is asking why that is a topic all by itself ,we think there's a magic pill for everything , all these studies you talk about are as about as useful as a chocolate ashtray until you find vegetarians and vegans who only eat non posion food and water you will never get a true finding sorry but it's a fact
All poisons/toxins (like heavy metals and such) usually accumulate in the food chain. So if you eat 1 field of veggies. You get 1 field of veggies worth of poison in you. If you eat 1 cow, that cow will during it's life eat 100 fields of veggies. This is just an example, all numbers are made up. So say that you and the cow absorb equal amount of poison from each field, the cow has 100 times the toxins you have. Now say some cannibal eats you, he now gets the toxin from all the cows you ate (obviously it's not 100% transfer, but you get the idea). That is one of the reasons fish are so dangerous to women. Fish eat smaller fish and shrimps and such, which in turn eat even smaller water organisms, which in turn eat plankton and such. For each step the poison/toxin levels accumulate (such as Mercury) so pregnant women are "forbidden" to eat fish. And the actual number I read/heard somewhere is 18 per year for area needed for food compared to a human food requirement. So if you eat meat, you need 18 times the area of soil to grow vegetables for the meat you will eat during that time. Logically it would be up to 18 times more toxins. So 1 meat eater eats same amount of "total food" and toxins as 18 vegans...
I changed my mind about his voice. At first I found it intensely annoying--like it made me wanna punch him. Sorry, but it's true (though I've never really punched anybody but my little brother many years ago). But I just watched the whole thing, and at the end I have to say he's just entertaining. Nice to listen to even. Thanks, Dr. Greger. :)
Absolutely! A year ago I found his voice and mannerisms grating, but now he is my favorite guy and mostly I find him hugely entertaining.....not to mention knowing EVERYTHING about plant based living. Thank you, Dr. G!
The correlation of high cholesterol to early mortality is the same correlation as wearing a high number of band-aids and early mortality. In short, there is no correlation. Especially when the type of cholesterol is not specified.
Yup. Nuff said... Or, I cannot resist... it's like snipping all the legs off a flee, then putting it on the table and hitting the table with a hammer ... bang! But the flee did not jump. Scientific conclusion: the flee did not jump, because cutting all of its legs caused it to become deaf. Quot erat demonstrandum....
Allisa Mint cholesterol is correlated with inflammation. More cholesterol would mean more inflammation. Arterial plaque is cholesterol and scar tissue lining diseased arteries.
I have watched this video and others of his for some time now, this one alone I've seen perhaps five times, I love his voice and entertaining manner. I can see however why someone might be bothered but not for me, I like his quirky manner. .
You are either a plant or are extremely sarcastic. There is no way any human or non-human living thing could possibly like that voice. I made it through 1 minute and 38 seconds and I had to go to the emergency room because my ears were bleeding.
I assure you I am not a plant. The number of people who have seen this video tells the story. If you look on RUclips you will see that this video has been watched millions of times. I do not particularly like his voice and he will never make it in my mind as one of the best speaker, but he does keep my interest and definitely knows that the heck he is talking about. His web site nutritionfacts.org is very popular and again millions of people subscribe.
I once had a female boss who was a life-long vegetarian (not sure if she was vegan) Seventh Day Adventist who had a heart attack at about 45 years old. She was tall, thin, and active. She did survive.
Almost stopped listening after 2 minutes because of the preacher type presentation. But I made it through 5 minutes and then stayed for the whole talk 😉. Glad I did.
I watched this video a year ago and I was really angry at the plant based food industry. Everything from my plant milk, cheeses, meat replacements, mayo, salad dressings etc has omega 6 oils in it. Then I looked at regular food, tomato pasta sauces, microwave rices... all have palm oils, sunflower oil etc. So I cut them out, mask my own and take my ground flax seed in my porridge every day. I just wish my dad was still alive to teach him.
Thank you! "meet eaters" = lol, my grammar spelling nit-picking father would be all over this. Love you Michael Greger and I love the intonation of your voice, it contributes to the story
I love Dr. Greger! He does look a lot more professorial these days, shaven and a better hair cut! I also love his style of delivery! He really keeps my attention, not boring or monotone! His message and knowledge are my bible! I've been able to come off of many medications since going mostly vegan!
My mom lived to the ripe old age of 92 and never ate fruits and not that many vegetables. In fact she thought a fruit was a colorful guy. She had the worse diet on the planet, but she was in relatively good health. She had mild dementia, slightly elevated blood pressure, a hiatal hernia and was over weight. So how did she die? Her stomach turned and cut off the entrance. The doctors didn't want to operate due to her age they insisted the operation would be to much for her and she wouldn't survive the operation.. we will never know.. and because she was able to make her own decisions she opted out and quietly passed away after being heavily sedated. My mom wasn't a big eat meat either but I wouldn't classify her as a vegetarian. She ate a classic Mexican diet. Beans, rice, chilli, tortillas, lots of eggs and dairy products, potatoes sardines, some canned fruit, lots of sodas and processed food the worse diet on the planet!!?? My sister on the other hand was a vegetarian for most of her life had a very clean diet and "looked" like the picture of health and died a few months after her 70th birthday of a stroke ( several over a few days) ???? Leaving us all to wonder just how much does our diet have to do with how long we live and how healthy we really are??
An important talk for the information it provides, but I'm surprised at the very narrow basis of the idea that food and what we eat is the only/main factor that is involved in mortality rates. How about other lifestyle factors such as stress levels, emotional wellbeing, exercise levels etc. etc. These have an enormous impact on our health.
You are absolutely right. However, an excellent diet rich in everything we need, is the best defense against the rest of everything the world throws at us.
Well, I thought I had posted a response. Let's try this again. You are absolutely right. However, an excellent diet rich in everything we need, is the best defense against everything else the world throws at us. That said, it is a beginning, not an end all, be all solution. We Must be proactive in our own lives. Every minute of every day.
I can't even focus on the message with the de/crescendos in each sentence. I'm like, "Why are you yelling at me... oh wait, you're back to normal... oh shit it's happening again!"
Haha, he's absolutely outrageous isn't he! XD It's like he's building up to the mother of all punchlines the whole way. He's got something BIG in his pocket.
His voice is great. Keeps you engaged with what he’s saying. It’s not a boring monotone voice which many academics have. Also I think he sounds just like Scott Disick which adds to the entertainment factor.
This information, as the doctor says, is now 17 years old. Some of what he says has been found to be erroneous since 2002. As for the AHA, they don't have your heart health as a priority so stop listening to them. Cholesterol isn't really the problem. Inflammation and Cholesterol mixed with the wrong things (notably sugar and smoke particles) is a problem. Cholesterol is needed by every cell in your body and many of your body's processes. It is a major component of your brain and neurological system. Though I have not attempted yet to research this, I have wondered if there is a relationship between the use of cholesterol lowering drugs and brain/neurological disorders (i.e. has Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, et al, increased with the increased use of statins). And, I have wondered the same thing about vegetarian/vegan diets. Some day I will get around to researching this suspician. But for now, I have to figure out why I have developed CHF despite my cardiologists (plural) being unable to find a reason. Once I figure out the cause of my CHF then I will turn my attention to the relationship between cholesterol levels and brain/neurological health. Regardless, in the meantime, I suggest reviewing current research documention on the subjects covered in this video and not accepting as true all of the stuff presented here 17 years ago. Good luck. The truth is out there with respect to health, we just won't hear it from the AMA, AHA, ADA, FDA, CDC, NIH, or pharmaceutical company approved medical curriculums. Be your own researcher and health advocate.
Jeff yes there is a relationship between taking statins and neurological disorders. It causes memory loss. Regarding high cholesterol, he is saying the difference between the populations with high cholesterol is: those who eat enough inflammation-fighting foods like fruits and vegetables and omega-3‘s, are the ones who have a 70% lower mortality rate from heart disease than those who are not eating enough inflammation- fighting foods. The inflammation is what causes the cascade of events that lead to heart attacks. So: not everyone with high cholesterol will have heart problems; only those who don’t fill their diets with fruits and vegetables and avoid meats and processed foods.
"Cholesterol isn't really the problem" We have a scientific consensus that LDL causes atherosclerosis. From systematic reviews from genetic, epidemiologic, and clinical studies. [1] "Cholesterol is needed by every cell in your body and many of your body's processes." That is why the body makes exactly as much as we need, if we eat cholesterol or saturated fat we become more than we need. " I have wondered if there is a relationship between the use of cholesterol lowering drugs and brain/neurological disorders (i.e. has Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, et al, increased with the increased use of statins). And, I have wondered the same thing about vegetarian/vegan diets. " You should not compare drugs with diet. Drugs have bad side effects, that is true. Do you have any study showing that vegans have more Alzheimer or Parkinson? "Our case illustrates that a vegan diet may have substantial benefits for patients with PD or related conditions." [2] and "Three recent case-control studies conclude that diets high in animal fat or cholesterol are associated with a substantial increase in risk for Parkinson's disease" [3] [1] www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28444290/ [2] www.avensonline.org/wp-content/uploads/JPA-2376-922X-03-0016.pdf [3] www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4191896/
This guys states things as black or white. Not all saturated fats are bad. 1) Many studies confused saturated fats with trans fats (partially hydrogenated coconut oil) studies. There is much confusion here. Therefore all saturated fats were soon deemed bad. 2) Saturated fats helps build bone. 3) By the way they also help brain development and nerves 4) Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides which can help with energy production 5) Helps immune system 6)improves HDL "cholesterol" (associated with cholesterol but different substance) 7)improves lung function 8) regulates insulin There are more but 9) is get a clue! There are other reasons why the Mediterranean diet is good. It might be b/c they eat less sugar. Or... how about the fact they eat a varied diet and get more total vitamins and minerals not just the key ones he mentioned. How about the ave American also consumes more chemicals in our foods. He make a few good points but not all of the info is so straight forward. There are many other variables when looking into diet differences.
@@profd65 Ironic for you to call someone stupid when you have no counter-argument. How wise is it to just insult rather than trying to come to some sort of understanding?
There is only one cholesterol... (no Types). The rest is about how you are using them, but you are mostly correct. With no cholesterol, you would die quickly.
If people would give rise to the pesticides and herbicides in fruits and vegetables, even those eaten by animals, they’d probably discover that unless you grow your own food and feed your animals grass rather than corn you’d have even less risk of heart attack. Focusing on vegan versus carnivore (which I get Nd is a great study by the way) instead of the chemicals in the foods we eat, might give answers to our questions about this. That said, I’m only 5minutes into the video and very interested in what is being shared.
Yes, our friend has a whiny, high-pitched voice, but I find him not only intelligent and well educated, but he is very entertaining. None of us is perfect.
If a plant based diet is so smart, why in the last 10,000 years have we no enduring civilization which is entirely plant based? It's only smart because you have grocery stores. Without them, you would have died.
Valarie Knight, wild plants have much more nutrition. Back then it was easy to get nutrition, only recently when people bred out nutrition for larger water filled fruits and vegetables. Smaller cherry tomatoes for instance, the heirloom tomato types have way more nutrition per calorie, nutrition is in the peel, and way less sugar than larger ones. Only recently cooking allowed more calories but lowered nutrition by a good amount too. And meat is just cooking something to get more calories, allowing tubers & other starches and later grains. But each time another source of calories is invented, like white flour or cooked potatoes, its a high calorie but lower nutrition option. Animal meat is just another one of these calorie additions.
Your argument would be valid IF vegans and others went out and ate only wild plants but they don't. "People" didn't bred out nutrition. Vegetarians did with their agenda to make vegetables something humans should eat. Apparently you're not very familiar with nutrition. Nutrition is not about calories, it's about nutrition. Meat has always been the primary staple of human diets. Can you name me one civilization, who lived, thrived and prospered on a strictly vegetable or even plant based diet? Just one will do.
Okay I’ll admit the inflections in his voice were slightly annoying at first but I watched it all the way through and after a bit the inflections became somewhat amusing and more importantly the information throughout was a phenomenal and no it’s not just get more omega 3, b-12, and vit d. Here are my take home notes: How not to have a heart attack or get a brain disease * Consume 2 tbls ground flax seeds per day * Use Olive oil & Canola oil instead of vegetable or other cooking oil * Supplement 100 mcg b-12 /day * Supplement 400 iu vit d per day * Eat lots of greens (9 servings (kale for calcium), beans, nuts, fresh fruit, and whole grains * Drink lots of water
I’d add... * sit in a sauna 20-30 and sweat min a day *exercise daily (which he did say) * get 6-8 hours of sleep per day * find a way to lower your stress every day.
As I understand, you vegetarians don't use meat for the reason of cholesterol, and because of that you need lot of supplements, but cholesterol at the end is not the reason of heart disease. Great thinking.
Although I like Dr. Greger's videos in general, I think he has missed the point in this episode. The correlation between cholesterol and C.H.D. is old an inaccurate. It took an Engineer to find the Root Cause and focus on the real issue, which is Insulin Resistance caused by high carbohydrate foods resulting in Arterial Calcium accumulation. See Ivor Cummins' many videos, beginning with "The Cholesterol Conundrum" available on RUclips.
Totally agree. And watching his podcasts he brings in many experts to discuss the many and varied factors that may also be involved . This enables all to gain a really rounded understanding.
The cause of most heart attacks and strokes are from the clots formed when a person has atherosclerosis which occurs because the body sends cholesterol to patch areas of the intima layer or the lining of arteries... there is evidence that reason the lining is damaged is because the body is not creating enough collagen which is highly dependent on vitamin c and lysine for the body to produce it. While things like insulin resistance can cause the damage to the tissues of the arteries, they are less likely to become injured if the tissues are strong and cigarette smoking can cause damage too, and other factors too... there was a very interesting report about a study showing no formation of atherosclerosis in mice given high amounts of vitamin c while the mice who were deprived of vitamin c developed atherosclerosis. It’s a little more complicated of course... but, while one could say heart disease is caused by insulin resistance or cigarette smoking... really, it’s a vitamin deficiency. But with that said, a person who receives perfect nutrition to support the most perfect functioning of every part of the body is still going to die as the body naturally begins to go through multiple degenerative reductions in processes, for lack of a better way of putting it. And no amount of nutrition will save us from other ways in which we can die, like getting hit by a train.
He's hilarious! I really enjoyed his style of delivery & the interesting results from the various studies. We can all make wrong assumptions re our health and diet e.g the difference in vitamin B12's basic or optimum dosage and in which form. I'm learning new things and just want to be as informed and balanced as possible...thanks for sharing!
Vegetarians are substituting protein and fat with carbohydrates/sugar which drives insulin. This high insulin over years is associated with developing dementia.
erm...legumes, protein in dark leafy greens, nuts....fat from Avocados etc....I'm not missing any of that from my diet. The fact that you need 237236582736 grams of protein every day is pure bro science and you have many vegan bodybuilders who build muscles on plants alone. :)
That is a blanket statement, which serves no one. There may be vegetarians and vegans that substitute with carbs and sugar initially, especially if they haven't got help in making the transition. But every vegetarian or vegan I know eats very little carbs and sugar, less than all the meat eaters I know, from a personal observational point of view. We are all different, and should all have a right to choose the diet that suits us best. Personally I have never felt better since I transitioned to an almost vegan diet (I still use raw organic honey and the occasional organic egg from my own hens), and although I haven't reversed my ME and fibromyalia, there has been improvements since I changed my diet, and I am not in a wheelchair, even tho the ME diagnoses was over 10 years ago. But I am never short of protein or good healthy fats.
Vannessa, grains have fed human civilizations for thousands of years: rice in Asia, corn in Central America, potatoes in South America, and barley and wheat in Europe. 50% dementia rates are a new, Western, high fat and protein diet phenomenon.
In 2009 I fell down stairs and broke my hip. I was discovered to have early osteoporosis. The doctors were more interested in whether I smoked and drank alcohol excessively (neither!). I told them I was vegetarian, but this was not considered important. I will be using flaxseed grains from now on.
Cholesterol is now known not to be the number one risk factor for heart disease. It is diabetes. In fact, 50% of who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol.
@@juleneveart5191 Sure. "Normal" cholesterol levels for people like you who believes in mainstream low quality information is already way too high. I suppose you also think blood pressure should be higher as you age and this is normal. There are countless studies proving cholesterol is the one factor predicting heart disease. Those under a certain cholesterol level (70 LDL if i remember correctly) just DO NOT have CVD events.

btw u meat eaters are morons who think that they have any right to kill an animal just because of taste and convinience and u have to be so dumb to call him bias
i also see u have posted this comment about 2-3 weeks ago and do u know when he delivered this speech ? maybe watch it again and we have come a long way since then now we have alternatives of every animal products in 2018 so we don't need any animal products anymore if u r not lazy just do your own reasearch instead of calling someone bias
+Fon D Maybe the "bias" is based on the fact he was employed by the meat industry whilst at University and the 350,000 studies he and his team analyse. Nobel Laureate Dr Valter Longo probably is one of the world experts on Autophagy and Cancer treatment. He says the same. The blue zones also bare testament to this research.

Best hour I've spent on youtube all month. Learned a lot. I think I've got exercise tackled but didn't know how much my diet has been lacking. Thanks!
Wow. This was so helpful. Of course now I’m pretty sure I’m way less healthy than I thought buuuut lol, at least now I have recommendations to improve things
Yeah this a classic. Worth sharing.
Love Dr Greger's presentation. He is funny, knowlegeable and right on.
@J Walter no offense but source up or shut the fuck up.
@alias paul got a source or is that just shit spewing out of your mouth?
@J Walter Great thanks for all that free information that "can't be debunked " now please provide some free evidence to what you said...I'm waiting...
We're all screwed! All we can do is drink water and suck on moss covered rocks
randy natch LMAO😅
randy natch funniest comment ever
Lolol
randy natch lol! You are so right!
Who doesn't like a moss covered rock sucking once in awhile. But alas, I found another option. Apparently there's something called breatharian. No food or water needed for the rest of your life.....
You should all watch "What the Health" on Netflix!
A wonderful documentary indeed!
Had my husband watch it, and it got him motivated to make a second try at plant based eating! He started today!
Total garbage void of science.
AWSOME I watched twice now..
It's been found that meat-eaters were more exposed to pesticides than vegetarians/vegans
Simon Lorenzato-Labrosse, could you elaborate on how meat eaters are more exposed to pesticides than vegetarians/vegans?
If Jerry Seinfeld was giving a talk about fruits-vegetable-based diets, it would sound like this
I had to mute and turn on subtitles. Sorry, guys.
Thanks, Dr. Greger. :)
Same here! Strange not seeing him on a treadmill ..
xpaderom2 I’m impatiently waiting for the moment he’ll start to sound pleasant
xpaderom2 yes, a year later I can finally deal with this presentation without losing my patience.
I completely agree!
Quot erat demonstrandum....
how you are using them, but you are mostly correct. With no cholesterol, you would die quickly.
Allisa Mint cholesterol is correlated with inflammation. More cholesterol would mean more inflammation. Arterial plaque is cholesterol and scar tissue lining diseased arteries.
Dr. Greger rocks. Probably the best nutrition masterclass I have seen.
I found this extremely interesting and informative. Thank you!
I have watched this video and others of his for some time now, this one alone I've seen perhaps five times, I love his voice and entertaining manner. I can see however why someone might be bothered but not for me, I like his quirky manner. .
Me too !!
Love his voice and mannerisms.
It must be very lonely for you, up at the top.
I once had a female boss who was a life-long vegetarian (not sure if she was vegan) Seventh Day Adventist who had a heart attack at about 45 years old. She was tall, thin, and active. She did survive.
WHAT RUDE COMMENTS!
true, I like his voice, I find him very interesting and entertaining. He makes me smile.
Yeah rude is not the answer, why not just suggest double speed? That normalizes his voice oddly enough.
My ancestors in Jamaica used coconut oil all their lives and they live to their 80s, 90s, and 100s with no health issues. What so bad about it?
Coconut oil is very healthy as far as I know
wondering the same thing
Virgin tropical oils are not a problem as far as I can tell. Animal fats as well as trans fats are a problem though.
Same here.
@@chiyerano when did animal fat become a problem? 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you! "meet eaters" = lol, my grammar spelling nit-picking father would be all over this. Love you Michael Greger and I love the intonation of your voice, it contributes to the story

Thank you for the knowledge. Appreciate your sharing the knowledge
Best impression of John Cryer from Two and a Half Men I've ever heard.
the best dr Greger speach EVER!! THANK YOU!
I love Dr. Greger! He does look a lot more professorial these days, shaven and a better hair cut! I also love his style of delivery! He really keeps my attention, not boring or monotone! His message and knowledge are my bible! I've been able to come off of many medications since going mostly vegan!
I love his voice, using his voice very smartly to get my attention...
The information is delivered in a manner that keeps me interested.
Substance over style, works for me
pattigee1 actually this style is pretty much like Jerry Seinfeld.
Love your passion for your findings. Intrigued

His voice is great. Keeps you engaged with what he’s saying. It’s not a boring monotone voice which many academics have. Also I think he sounds just like Scott Disick which adds to the entertainment factor.
All things considered, I'd rather go vegetarian or vegan for the sake of animals...

"Cholesterol isn't really the problem"
We have a scientific consensus that LDL causes atherosclerosis. From systematic reviews from genetic, epidemiologic, and clinical studies. [1]
"Cholesterol is needed by every cell in your body and many of your body's processes."
That is why the body makes exactly as much as we need, if we eat cholesterol or saturated fat we become more than we need.
" I have wondered if there is a relationship between the use of
cholesterol lowering drugs and brain/neurological disorders (i.e. has
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, et al, increased with the increased use of
statins). And, I have wondered the same thing about vegetarian/vegan
diets. "
You should not compare drugs with diet. Drugs have bad side effects, that is true. Do you have any study showing that vegans have more Alzheimer or Parkinson? "Our case illustrates that a vegan diet may have substantial
benefits for patients with PD or related conditions." [2] and "Three recent case-control studies conclude that diets high in animal fat or cholesterol are associated with a substantial increase in risk for Parkinson's disease" [3]

This man is brilliant oh my god. Also the flier he had typed up for everyone...is that available online?
This guys states things as black or white. Not all saturated fats are bad. 1) Many studies confused saturated fats with trans fats (partially hydrogenated coconut oil) studies. There is much confusion here. Therefore all saturated fats were soon deemed bad. 2) Saturated fats helps build bone.
3) By the way they also help brain development and nerves
4) Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides which can help with energy production
5) Helps immune system
6)improves HDL "cholesterol" (associated with cholesterol but different substance)
7)improves lung function
8) regulates insulin
There are more but
9) is get a clue!
Are you still stupid? Or have you wised up?
@@profd65 Ironic for you to call someone stupid when you have no counter-argument. How wise is it to just insult rather than trying to come to some sort of understanding?
You sir, are IGNORANT.
One of our smartest and best representatives of a healthy plant based diet.
I dont care his voice but his message is important.
If a plant based diet is so smart, why in the last 10,000 years have we no enduring civilization which is entirely plant based? It's only smart because you have grocery stores. Without them, you would have died.
Carlos just listen to it at double speed. Makes it easier to get his important message.
Here are my take home notes:
How not to have a heart attack or get a brain disease
* Consume 2 tbls ground flax seeds per day
* Use Olive oil & Canola oil instead of vegetable or other cooking oil
* Supplement 100 mcg b-12 /day
* Supplement 400 iu vit d per day
* Eat lots of greens (9 servings (kale for calcium), beans, nuts, fresh fruit, and whole grains
* Drink lots of water
I’d add...
* sit in a sauna 20-30 and sweat min a day
*exercise daily (which he did say)
* get 6-8 hours of sleep per day
* find a way to lower your stress every day.
Canola oil is actually really bad for you, substitute coconut oil and you should be good to go.
Love how he present his research, what an awesome person!
I love the way he talks. It's engaging and kinda funny. Great talk. Thank you
As I understand, you vegetarians don't use meat for the reason of cholesterol, and because of that you need lot of supplements, but cholesterol at the end is not the reason of heart disease.
Inter milo cellular lipids
This dr. is very smart, but if I went to his house and had dinner, and his whole family sat around the table talking like that, I would go nuts.

Jan Majnik True dat.
not all, so your wrong
This changed my life
As this is now a 16 year old lecture, I'd love to hear Dr G's updated findings based on current research. Is anyone aware of such a link?
Well Dr Greger has a channel on youtube with frequent updates with the current studies and findings. Nutritionfacts dot org
