    I disagree with your comments on there being a such small audience for this vehicle. And BMW sales numbers would bear that out...they are difficult to get, dealers can't keep them in inventory. FWIW, I've owned one for 2 months...this is my 4th BMW and my favorite so far. It does everything very well...good fuel economy, premium feel, tons of power, utility and the tax credit makes it a better deal than the 40i. The only sacrifice vs a 40i is lack of 3rd row (which is unusable anyway, imho) and an ever so slightly smaller rear storage area (to make room for the battery). And compared to the Volvo...well, no comparison. Talk about boring. And having test driven both, way less powerful.

    I think you guys are a bit off on this review. We have this car and it's a brilliant luxury SUV that is luxurious, quiet, and has the advantage of going electric or gas. It does require a commitment to charge it and you really need a level 2 charger to fully use the electric power and the charging speed is pitiful compared to our Tesla. I watched several reviews of testers that tested the X5 45E versus the Volvo equivalent and most all prefer this X5. For me, the inline 6 is reason enough to choose the X5 over the 4-cylinder Volvo. We ordered ours exactly how we wanted it and it came to about $66K after factoring in the federal tax credit, actually cheaper than getting the exact same spec'd X5 40I. For the money, it's a brilliant value.
    I generally enjoy your reviews but this one was a miss in my opinion because you haven't connected with the type of buyer this car will make very happy.

      I totally agree. I used to own the 40i and just switched over to a 2022 45e a couple of months ago and it is a brilliant car! Indeed, you need to commit to charging it to benefit from your (local) electric driving. But with that my MPG has gone from 20 MPG (40i) to 30 MPG (45e). I also love how seamlessly the car manages to switch between combustion and electric motors. Charging is slow compared to most (fully) electric vehicles but when plugged in overnight it will be full in the morning.

    This is probably the strangest X5 45e review I’ve seen. I own a Volvo T8 phev and have recently driven the X5 45e which is probably going to be my next car. It is a better car in every imaginable factor. Claiming that the Volvo XC60/90 ”is a better drive” than the BMW is one of the oddest things here. Put a little speed to a corner and you really don’t feel comfortable in my Volvo (R-Design spec). The same speed with the BMW and you don’t notice anything, it is planted to the road. Maybe it’s because the BMW is so much quieter and refined that you feel like going faster in the Volvo. The engine sound in the 3.0l six cylinder BMW is awesome and in the Volvo the four cylinder 2.0 engine sounds very strained and harsh even on low revs. When you floor it, the sound is louder than any diesel I’ve owned.
    I get a usable electric range of 35km from the Volvo but around 70km from the X5 (EU spec). You can easily do your daily commutes on e-power only. The Volvo is a front wheel driven car with ”aid” from the e-motor on the back wheels. On slippery days it’s impossible to drive on electric mode because if the rear wheels spin even a little bit it will fire up the engine to start pulling with the front wheels. Totally unusable in winter driving, snow and icy roads. The BMW is 4wd also on electric only as mentioned in the video. The electric power is sufficient in the BMW to keep up with normal traffic on shorter commutes. It’s actually better than the numbers make you think cause the e-motor can use the transmission unlike in the Volvo where the underpowered 83hp rear wheel motor is quite useless on its own (latest models have more power but the concepts is still bad, can’t change that).
    They also say the Volvo has more power but that is not how the cars feel. The Volvo under acceleration is nervous and does not feel confident since the front wheels are delivering 80% of the power. The steering wheel keeps pulling your hands. The BMW has a rear wheel bias 60-40 front split on the xDrive system and under heavy acceleration you can basically remove your hands from the steering wheel and it still goes like on rails.
    The infotainment is lightyears ahead in the BMW. The Volvo system is filled with unusable small touch screen texts to click and it is just a pain to use. On the BMW you have multiple ways to interact with the system and choose which is best for the situation you are in. The cruise control on the Volvo does not work and in downhill you may go 9km/h over the set limit. In the BMW it never goes above more than 1-2km/h.
    I could go on, the list is long but I think you get the point. I’m never buying a Volvo again. Watch other X5 45e reviews. This is an odd one, even though I like the way it’s done.

      As an ex Volvo XC90 ( 2018-2021) owner, I can fully agree and attest to what you say. Was the T6, but have driven the T8 often, liked it a lot, but after driving this 45e, there is no comparison honestly. Everything is better on the BMW, though I like the Volvo exterior styling a smidge better. These two clowns have no effin clue what they are reviewing.

    • @msuomal
      @msuomal 2 года назад

      @@dgdave2673 I now own the X5 45e. Have had it for a week. Had to take an in-stock car, so I couldn’t spec it myself. There are some essential options missing like keyless entry but that is not the cars fault, rather the sales persons who ordered the in-stock car. To ”balance” this are also needless options like display key, heated arm rests etc. It’s really hard to fault this car. After owning the Volvo for a month I had a 30 item list of things they could improve (like the bumbers of the car being slightly different color from the metal surfaces and many, many others in addition to the ones I mentioned above). Now, on the BMW, so far I have nothing.
      A few days back I drove 420+ km with an average consumption of 6,6l/100km (full battery at start), 82km/h average speed. I never got even close to those numbers with my Volvo on trips like that even though it has a smaller engine. I think the overall average consumption was close to 10l/100km. If you drove very nicely in hybrid mode (read front wheel drive) you’d get 8,7 maybe but in 4wd setting it got closer to 10.
      Very happy with my new car! Highly recommended. Very refined, it’s actually quite hard to hear if the engine is running or not, it’s so quiet and smooth. There’s literally 0 engine vibration coming into the cabin.

      Totally agree what you said. I currently drives the Volvo XC60 T6 Inscription(Fully loaded $60K MSRP). From over a year's experience, the Volvo is way toooo noisy, the road noise, engine noise is not acceptable at this price point. That's the biggest complaint we have.
      So is the infotainment screen, it is sluggish and slow. So we wanted to switch, we test drove the XC90 T6, It has the same problem un-acceptable noise level. And with the 2023 XC90 T8 Extended range, the change the pricing model, if you want a good interior with leather stitching on the door, with the ultimate trim, plus air suspension, and Bowers&Wilkins you are looking at 86K.
      On the other hand, the fully loaded X5 45e we were looking at it is 80K. Thought it doesn't have the Bowers&Wilkins, but it is Way cheaper. And driving them side by side, the XC90 is not refined as a luxury car at the price point, it is way over priced.
      Our x5 45e is expecting to arrive late September this year. Looking at your comment of "I'm never buying a Volvo again." I feel you. That's how I felt after driving my Volvo for over a year.

      @@malcolmlaw7663 good choice! Congrats! I have had my X5 45e for 4 months now and I’ve driven 21500km with it. Out of those 8500 are electric. That’s around 40%. I wasn’t even close to that with my Volvo. I still have 0 complaints on BMW. It is so refined and quiet. Even though it is actually quite dynamic to drive on sport and does feel fast if you call for it, the cars character makes you want to just cruise quietly and comfortably. The engine is so good, I accelerate faster sometimes just to hear it :). Really, very hard to think of what BMW could do better in a car like this.

    Just go for 40i, I disagree on Volvo XC90, interior is far better on x5. Also inline six on X5 is the best in the business, 2.0t turbo on xc90 can’t compete. 45e if you don’t get fully loaded is good value with 7500 credit. I think the part of the discussion where you talk about it being difficult for the whole world to go fully electric by 2030 is spot on. The reality is, we still use fossil fuels to bring electricity to our homes and it will take the equivalent of installing 2-3 refrigerators in every home power-wise to keep our cars charged. Our current electrical grid isn't ready for that sort of consumption and I doubt the tech will be there to replace it. A plug-in hybrid is a nice middle ground in terms of doing what you can and being realistic. The improved gas mileage doesn't make you feel guilty on long road trips and the plug-in should suffice for getting around town every couple of days between charges.

    Well, after a test ride in both, I strongly disagree that the Volvo XV90 feels more powerful. With loaded battery both feel similar to me but with empty battery, the Volvo with its 2.0 4-Cylinder has no chance against the 3.0 straight six in the BMW. Also the BMW has the better pure electric range and the iDrive system is benchmark while you get lost in the Volvo. The only thing the Volvo can beat the BMW in my eyes is exterieur design. Anyway, I ordered the BMW and looking forward to get it .... sometime. Btw: I always smile when US people complain about the price tag of USD 81k. I equipped my X5 hybrid well but not fully loaded and it´s Euro 110,450 here in Germany. That´s USD 125,300 :-(

    Going to pick mine up this week so I have no comments about the car itself but I wanted to point out why we bought it.
    All electric in rural SD is too scary to drive over 200 miles with no charging but still do a lot of in town driving. 30-40 miles is reasonable vs the Volvo. You get hung up on the price but if you just take the tax credit off the price it’s far cheaper than the 40i. If you use the electric side half the time for say in town driving it’s far cheaper than the 40i.
    I don’t think anyone is buying this thinking they are getting a sports car.
    It’s a hybrid in more ways than one.
    According to my dealer the order slots filled up extremely quick so the demand is clearly there. With $5 plus gas I think it’s going to be one of the most desirable on the market.

  • @azdave7177

    Another aspect to think about that I think is overlooked.
    If you also want performance like a lot of people who buy the B58 are, if you do a stage 2 tune on this with the hybrid, you’d have an AWD trackhawk killer that also gets better fuel efficiency.

    I got one and absolutely love it, I have to respectfully disagree with parts of this review. It feels much more powerful than the XC90 which I also test drove. Volve simply adds gas and electric HP, and it doesn't work that way IRL. Additionally, BMW also remains conservative of their HP figures, and honestly the B58 in this car feels every bit as powerful as the one in the 40i, so I wonder if there's a little downplaying there to keep the 40i owners placated. The 40i is amazing to drive, but this is just simply phenomenal. Additionally, my commute (like most folks) is under 15 miles each way. I can make the entire commute without using gas, so I fill up the tank about once a month, if even that. So in the case of saving gas, you absolutely do save gas. And don't let the slow electric car comment fool you. It feels plenty fast in electric mode for keeping up with traffic. And when you bury the throttle, hold on to you hat. The Jekkyl and Hyde nature of this car is so appealing and fun. Absolutely love it. Get one if you can find one.

While I do not love the lines of this current X5 (I so loved the look of my 2012 X5) I compensated by getting the M Sport package and an upgraded paint color. My husband and I have owned BMWs since the 80's. Yes, this vehicle does not handle nearly as well as my past cars and it took me quite a few months to get used to it I think because of the electric element. I feel like it can get away from you because of the weight. All that being said; their assessment is correct that if you are just going to tool around locally and keep this vehicle charged you will get the most out of it, especially power. Since March of 2022 til today I have only filled the gas tank up 5 times. My husband purchased the I4 in November 2022 (now that is an amazingly FAST CAR, just WOW!) We plug both our vehicles in regularly and our electric bill each month has only increased by $20 per month. We recently went on a 3 hour road trip and the X5 Hybrid was lovely on the highway. People often miss one key point about BMW PHEV. BMW has a battery control button where you could charge up the battery while you are driving in gasoline mode. This works well especially when taking a road trip or driving on a highway. Once the battery is charged to 100%; you could switch back to electric only coasting on the highway or Eco mode where you might use both. This is how BMW PHEV intend it to be. Without using the battery, you are just hauling the dead battery weight around which drain the gas even more comparing to gasoline version.

      @@michaelmish4953 I would recommend charging on a daily basis. The car will ask you whether to charge immediately or at a scheduled time when you turn off the car. I set mine to charge at the off-peak hours for cheaper rates. For your 45e, it should take about 8-10 hours from empty to full from 110V (wall outlet).
      To charge the car while driving, there's a button above the start button (looks like a charging icon). Press the button. You can set the target for the car to charge the battery (from 10% to 100%). This button will put the car into ICE mode which would consume less mpg but it will charge your battery to the set target. It works best at higher speeds like when you're driving on a freeway or highway. It's great for long-distance driving or after depleting all of the battery. Once your battery is full, make sure to turn it off by pressing the button again. It will go back to your driving mode (e.g., Electric, Eco, Standard, Sports, etc.).

I had to drive their loaner (X1) for a month and paid for an X5 price. BMW is the worse (service-wise and computer system-wise). Nah, they don't get credit for this video. They misidentified the range of the battery and the top speed of the EV. I bought one of these a week ago, and it's identical to the one in this video. This car is surprisingly nimble for the weight. The driving assist can be annoying, which is why I turned down the sensitivity. The ~30 mile battery range should cover the average person to and from work, but at the very least to work where perhaps you can charge. So, you get the tax credit and the gas savings. Oh, and if you want to go fast, it goes 0 to 60 in about 4.7 to 4.8 (much faster than BMW reports). It drives so smoothly, but if you want to get aggressive, it has that too!

  • @luckyOslevin

    Agree with other commenters - you missed the point on the 45e. I came from a 2013 MB ML550 that I drove for 175k mi and bought this a year ago.
    The biggest thing is the ride comfort and the silence of driving predominately in EV mode. No one buying this cares a lick about steering feel - that’s not the priority.
    I drove a 40i as a loaner and was surprised at how much I notice the NVH of the engine. I also drove the M50i, and passed because the extra power doesn’t do much for me in daily driving. But the EV motor does.
    I liked that the 45e had comparable power to the ML550, the ability to tow 6k lbs, air suspension, but in the city could go around 50-75mph depending on usage. My ML550 averaged around 12-14mpg in the city. Plus it is more comfortable - the suspension really does waft on the highway.
    And that federal credit puts this in line with the 40i in terms of price. I get same power, same build quality, but way better city gas mileage for around the same price.
    My assumption is people buying this are urban and suburban professionals who want comfort, a bit of luxury, and have a garage they actually park in every night where they can charge this every day.
    The XC90 (which I rented for 2 weeks to test) falls short on electric range, ride comfort, and build quality. I was shocked at how much I didn’t like it. It looks fantastic - but the noise from the 4cyl isn’t nice. BMW learned that lesson from the prior-gen 40e and gave it a proper I6 so when you do hear the motor it isn’t raspy.
    Take one look at the Bimmerforum for this model and it’ll tell you what you need to know - most people who buy one love it and have very little to say that’s bad. We all just wished it charged at 7kW/hand not 3.7kW/h - the charging is properly slow on these. But for most who garage it overnight it doesn’t actually matter.

    I can’t believe these guys don’t understand that 30 miles on electric means most who buy will rarely use gas but can go on a 500 mile road trip without any route charger planning or range anxiety. And it’s not $80k unless it’s fully loaded. With plenty of options and luxury it’s $72k and then you get the tax credit so for most it’s a $65k luxury suv that commutes as an EV and road trips as an ice. It absolutely fits a huge need in the market. Surprisingly bad review that does not seem to get it.

  • @VanjaPejovic
    @VanjaPejovic 2 года назад +4

    I would actually consider this precisely because of its dual nature. My daily driving would be more than satisfied by the electric range, and even though it's heavy, it would be more efficient than any gasoline or regular hybrid. Then the size, comfort, and gas engine would make it better on road trips than almost any electric car. I wish they would commit to this dual-nature though. If I'm going to drive it mostly in electric mode, make that the more powerful part, and then give me a gas engine that's just optimized for cruising on the highway.
    All that said, 80k is way more than I would want to spend on a car so boring. Also, you could buy 2 separate cars for the 2 use cases for that much money.

    Perhaps BMW, along with others, are simply trying to figure out what they can get away with and what they can sell while not offending either: 1) their customer base; 2) electric/hybrid advocates; 3) those who are well heeled enough to have a foot in both camps. The thing that boggles my mind is how companies that have traditionally produced cars that speak to and spike our emotions, how are they going to survive in an environment where cars become less about passion and more about being an appliance?
    Maybe this is my answer to my own question:
    My wife and I have a 2019 Tiguan SEL (a very nice automotive appliance) and it does what it does very well and there are times I marvel at how it "just does." Yet with my marveling there's never a time that it brings about passion; but there is comfort in the fact that I don't have to think much about it doing it's job superbly; the car isn't the object of my attention but rather its making memories with my family as the car just seamlessly fades into the background with a whisper as if to say, "I've got this, focus on the important things in life." It's not quick, it doesn't handle great, but it's roomy, has a nice sunroof and it fills our needs but I don't look back at it when I'm walking into the house.
    Nice appliance and not passion...is this our automotive future and, again, is this what BMW and others are trying to see if they can get away with without getting caught so they can hold onto their core consumers? Time will tell.

    • @johnguanci2316
      @johnguanci2316 2 года назад

      So while it may be palatable to be bored in my VW Tiguan SEL and to even find comfort in that juxtaposed position as a recovering car guy, I'm doing so at price point well south of $80k, which is the ballpark for the BMW X5 XDrive 45e, so maybe that's the rub. For $80k is it acceptable for the consumer to be bored? Maybe that's what BMW and so many of their automotive market brethren are trying to figure out as they mugwump their way into the automotive future with forces that are diametrically opposed to one another.

    I own a RAV4 Prime and it has an MPGe of 94 whereas the Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD has an MPGe of about 98. The MPGe has nothing to do with the gas motor so it’s a pretty good comparison. The Prime was a lot less expensive and I have no range anxiety. It’s a hoot to drive in EV or HV mode. It it stays reliable and inexpensive to maintain, in spite of the complexity, then I think it is a great way to go. The only other PHEV that I know of that is more efficient is the Ford Escape. However that is not AWD.

    Hello. You keep compare it to XC90, and with Tesla. Good comparison from a reviewer point of view but not from an owner point of view. Take a look at JD Power and Consumer Reports , at the reliable and customer satisfaction top[ per brands or even on models. Savagegesse channel even describes his XC90 as a vehicle that had multiple problems, with the transmission, solved by dealer under guarantee, and with the infotainment sistem , not solved by the dealer , not being able to solve it. Yes it might be a better driving when it works, and for reviewers , the cars given by the dealers always works, but from the customer satisfaction point of view, in my opinion according to the mentioned tops or information given by the owners, I think that BMW is better. A Tesla owner buy his car from environment reason and how it drives. But a BMW owner , I think that wants his car for electric range if possible but he will stay in hybrid mode , consumption if necessary will not be a problem so , the slow behavior of the car will not be shown. In other markets, regulation is a thing so clients would want the peace of mind regarding that, and the autonomy range of the car in a market that has not so many electric charging stations available in his or her country.

Without the tax credit (welfare), makes no sense to spend $81k on a heavy hybrid that’s slow in full e mode, has only 30 miles of Electric only, isn’t faster than stock 6 cyl version which costs considerably less. Takes a long time to charge it and it’s not cheap. I’d get the 6 cyl (0-60 in 5.3 sec) with great steering and brakes, or the entry level V8 version for more power. No one wants a white interior.

If they don’t figure out a way they are going to continue to lose market share as Tesla keeps increasing production by 50 to 100% a year. Besides Tesla the Chinese are going to wreck the system. They have many companies that are already ahead of everyone besides Tesla. The quality is outstanding, the battery and motor technology is outstanding. They also have production capacity and years if not decades of experience. It’s gonna make what the Japanese did in the 70s look insignificant. So the American, German and Asian ICE companies don’t have the choice to extend things out further. Whatever they can’t do will be done by someone else. You guys better figure this out and not think I’m another Tesla fanboy. This is what smart industry people already know is happening now.
