The 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e Is A Nicely Upgraded Electrified Luxury SUV
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 мар 2022
- BMW's first SUV has been a huge success for the company over the last 2 decades and the latest version of the #BMWX5 is one of the most well-rounded luxury SUV's on the market. With the industry heading toward electrification, the #X5xDrive45e is the latest #X5 with a plug. Compared to the previous version, the #xDrive45e trades the 4-cylinder for a silky smooth turbo I-6 cylinder engine and the larger battery pack allows for 31 miles of electric only range.

The X5 with a plug was better than we expected and we much prefer it over the current Volvo XC90 T8 and Lincoln Aviator GT. We also should be driving the iX and i4 in the next couple of months!
Was it better than the base x5 engine?
@@ociabi same engine, the boost from the EV motor makes it slightly faster i believe.
You still left your phone # up at the 13 minute mark
The XC90 Recharge now has a somewhat usuable EV range tho, with the long range version... granted, like all the PHEVs right now, they're practically unobtanium...
I thought Volvo just announced software update that increases XC90 T8 range to 35 miles?
So I own an X5 45e and here’s a few things I’d add:
1. Electric Only mode is just fine for in city driving - it is enough to accelerate faster than most cars from a stop light up to city speeds - which is what it’s really for. In normal Hybrid mode, the gas engine will engage above 68mph and usually will kick in during merging while accelerating on the on ramp.
2. Over half of my 25k miles has been in EV mode - which means I’ve saved over $1k in fuel per year so far. My cost per mile on electric is .03c / mi, while my gas cost per mile is .16c / mi. A great city car that has an added bonus of being much cheaper to run.
3. 45e qualifies for $7500 tax credit making it cheaper than a comparable 40i model. Still good as of the 22MY.
4. The reason your range increased when driving is because in Sport mode the electric motor serves as a generator and adds about 3-4mi of range to the battery to support “Boost Mode” during hard acceleration to add performance.
5. The car averages 24mpg in highway driving - comparable to the 40i. But it blows it away when you factor in city driving.
6. The people who should buy this are folks who live in the city and commute to work. If you live in a rural area or are always on long trips, buy the 40i. But in the city, this is the smart buy if your electric rates are reasonable. It gives you EV range for the daily commute and gas convenience for the occasional long trip without the need to charge.
7. Towing Capacity is not 7k lbs - it is 5959lbs due to the added weight of the battery pack. I use mine to tow an E39 M5 and it is fantastic while towing.
Agree, I also own this X5 45e.
Same here I agree with all the above. I am probably 75% on EV since I don’t commute in the car at all. Agree that the acceleration is fine. No one should expect Tesla level acceleration on a PHEV it’s meant to save gas and go around town, not for high performance
I took the X5 45e for a test drive at a BMW drive event. I loved everything about it it; including the air suspension. I thought it was even more fun than the X3 M. The instant torque in the X5 45e is awesome -- I even got it in a AWD drift while turning. Only thing I didn't like was the regen every time I let off the throttle. Is there a way to make it coast -- so I don't get the jerky feeling?
@@ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow yep just put it in eco pro and it coasts
@@doomsday9973 -- Thanks! Can I put it in battery-only mode AND eco-pro at the same time? I'd like to be in control of whether or not the ICE will turn on. Hybrid mode would be my least fav -- don't want the engine constantly turning on and off.
I am driving one myself. Very very happy. Since my travel are mostly local like taking my kid to school and back home, grocery shopping, etc. I barely need to fill in any gas in last 3 weeks. Honestly, my last 3 weeks gas cost is 11.56 at 4.86 per gallon. I calculated if I use gas, the cost per mile is around 36 cents mile, if I use the battery with my home charger, it cost around 11 cents per mile. Electric mileage is not as good as a tesla 3-4 cents per mile, but it gives me a peace of mind if I need to do long distance travel with no worries of inability to find a EV charge station nearby. The best news is, it (x5 45e without any options 63700 - 7500 Fed EV Credit in effect) just cost lower than a Tesla Model Y long range w/o FSB (Currently 62990), but of course BMW got way better build quality and much better interior. I ordered mine in Dec 2021, and got my X5 45e on Feb 21, 2022). Also, Tesla does not allow me to buy 4 yrs extended warranty on Model Y, but BMW allow me to extend my warranty to full 7 yrs for extra 7900, plus the 4 yrs extended maintenance for 5200. So I can foresee my 7 yrs TCO in advance without much worries since Roadside Assistance comes standard with my BMW 7 yrs extended warranty. This best purchase decision I have made so far. My last ride is MB GLK 350 4matic.
Amazing car, agree with your points, but you overpaid for the warranty and maintenance plan. And I can't imagine keeping it more than 5 years.

@hingsunhome would you say this car makes sense if you don't have continuous access to charging? I'm considering the car, really like it, but where I currently live there is no charging. I might eventually move to a place that does, but that could be a year out. Do you think the car makes sense in a regular "hold" mode or whatever the appropriate one is when you don't charge?
Thanks very much for this review. This was one of the reviews that made me decide to go with the 45e in particular. Always enjoy your reviews
Just got one and it’s such a fantastic vehicle!
Amazing review. Thank you so much!
I love the style. In all fairness to your criticism regarding acceleration from 0 to 60 it’s important to remember it’s only an SUV. Acceleration is nice to have, but if you’re going for an SUV I don’t think acceleration is a top priority. If I have the money in the future this is what I would buy. I think Hybrid is way to go at this point.
真是非常令人享受的一次测试,很客观、也相当全面地介绍了45e,非常好!感谢您制作了这个测评。
FYI, your tester does not have the upgraded leather. Instead it has the standard Vernasca leather. The upgraded Merino leather will always be diamond stitched. Also, the stitching on the dashboard (leatherette) is also standard. The full real leather dashboard is optional only on the M50i, and standard on the X5M.
This is correct. I have a 22 40e with full Merino leather. A must option.
@@nelesco nice! The Merino leather is definitely worth the upgrade.
Do you get extended thigh/leg seat extenders with all or only specific leather/leatherette options?
@@Briangnc96 it’s a standard option. However, depending on options, that function can be manually operated or powered.
Sensatec is nice but it’s animal free leather and standard on the dash. You can get Sensatec seats also but I think it’s more common on 1-3 (series/X variants)
This car is my best vehicle purchase, all others at some point I regretted, but not this one, if you ask me compare to other competitors, this one is a no brainer.
19:10 If that's the first time you turned on the ICE that day, it most likely has a warmup cycle where it will run and subsequently charge the battery at the same time. Same thing happens to my PHEV when the ICE initially kicks on, I will get around 1-2 EV miles gained.
Ugh, still one of my favorites. Someday......
BMW really knocked it out of the park for the current gen X5. From the B58 in the 40i to the 600hp X5M, to the super nice interior to the beautiful exterior. I think this is the best in the segment.
It’s the safest choice
Completely agree with your comment.I purchased my 40i in the fall of 2019. Had only 1 small problem with the antenna over the 3.5 yrs, that's all. Took a gamble getting 1st yr, but it's been very reliable.
Is useless off-road
@@mikeduncan7552 why would I need to off road in the first place?
I agree I think the 45e is the best in the segment and the X5 might be the best car BMW makes right now. The B58 engine is very reliable.

I just ordered one with a tow hitch. Do you know what brake controller can be used?
Im curious as I cant seem to find anywhere...I own a 2018 X5 40e and want to know if there is a way to determine how many miles have been driven in EV mode vs ICE mode as the odometer tracks all miles? In theory, for every mile driven in EV mode, should extend the life of the engine by that many more miles...so ex - if I can get 200,000 on a normal ICE BMW X5, and I utilize EV mode 50% of the time, then the engine should still have 100,000 miles of life once I reach 200,000 miles correct? Id like to see where I can differentiate between the miles on the odometer.
Nice with the additional premium options you are missing 🤝👍🏼
The foglights were removed from the 45e for MY22, that must be a MY21 or 20. It is also missing the new badges that are on the MY22's.
I was thinking the same thing. This one also had the center touchscreen and wireless charging, both of which went away earlier in MY22.
Same, I have a 2022 model, no fog light, no HK speakers either..😓
@@thinhle9162 - the HK system and wireless charging are back. But $500 for wireless charging iOS ridiculous. Just use the wire

I just bought the X50e...It fixes most of your complaints about a slow electric only drive and has hands free highway driving up to 85 mph plus 500 HP...
Does it have heat pump? Can I use the climate control while parked without the ICE being running?
Great review as usual! Big fan. I have the 2019 X5, outstanding performance and handling! 6 years ago I had a Mercedes with the thigh support things and they made the driver’s seat very uncomfortable because you are sitting on the motor for it, and not on cushion. Curious if BMW has the same issue.
Sofyan, it is a PHEV NOT a dedicated BEV, so your comparison isn’t apples to apples. That electric motor is supposed to aid the ICE, not hustle the car at full speed and acceleration down the road… Who drives like that 100% of the time anyway. The most efficient way of driving the PHEV is leave them on automatic hybrid mode, so when you need power the gas engine will kick in (and that happens way sooner that pushing the gas pedal thru the kick down step), and will get you going or out of the way quickly, otherwise, the electric motor is plenty for most daily driving situations. That transition is seamless in my experience. The point of the PHEV is to gad better fuel economy and slightly better performance, but it isn’t to eliminate gas usage all together. If you want to have an electric car, then you should go for a dedicated BEV.
You should turn off the AC during the 0-60 test.
whats the full range miles on plug in??
Something very wrong in the testing of 0- 60 in EV only mode. I own this and it is around 8 second mark. Not sure how in the world he got 14 seconds! It can get up to 85mph in EV only and maintain that comfortably.
When will they release a full BEV X5?
Hi Sofyan, while you had driven the plugin NX from Lexus, do you think this X5 plugin worth the extra cost? (In case if we don't mind having a much smaller car)
Any ideas?
the X5 really does feel like a class above. The inline 6 engine, RWD based platform and much nicer interior.
Dude forget Lexus 😂😂
Anything beats the dressed up rav4. Plus this isn’t a competitor to the nx. That would be the supposed RX450h+ coming soon but even this mops the next gen RX off the floor before we even see it
😅Yes, i do know it's not an apple-to-apple comparison. X5 (eg.a Rolex) vs NX (eg.a Omega) .... if you say $15k for a Rolex vs a $9k Omega, i may take the cheaper Omega. 😋 ... unless u are telling me that NX is like a Timex. Lol... then I'll certainly go for a X5😂
Anyone out there had any issues with the X545e? My 2021 has been in the shop for about 3 weeks now, waiting for replacement parts for the battery. It is a beautiful car, great to drive, super efficient.. But not being able to drive it sucks.
What happened?
Our 2021 is 13 months old with 9,000 miles and has run almost flawlessly. Rarely, when unlocking, the side mirrors do not deploy. That's it. Filled the tank at the beginning of April and now, in the middle of July, the tank is still full, despite a few hundred miles of local driving. Cost to charge: $0.00--home has solar panels, with power credited back to the grid.
That car is too fresh to be broken already, is bmw cutting corners on quality so hard?
The graphic in the earlier part of the video said 0-60 in 4.8. Is it 4.8 or 5.3? Just curious what their numbers claim.
Their claim is 5.3 seconds, but we got 4.8 in our quickest run.

You have to understand that a 17 kilowatt motor compared to 82 kilowatts, plus the same heavy car, is simply not able to take off, as a car with 82 kilowatts does. It's not even discussed. The battery here is purely for that hybrid combination or driving in traffic. In general, if all the settings are correctly located, then this car has acceleration from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. Cvts have torque converters
This is where all the kids need to pay attention. This is what real luxury looks like. It’s not just about a little stitching on the dashboard and stamped sheet metal to look like solid aluminum like all the Japanese cars that are trying to be “premium”. It’s all about the things you can’t see or don’t pay attention to. Things like how thick the metal bars are that are holding the headrests, or the fact that it’s got about 400 pounds of sound insulation so that it’s a smooth quiet ride (not just on the door so that it has a solid thunk to trick consumers). The sheet metal throughout the body is thicker, more solid safety beams, dashboard panels that don’t flex and give way, a console that doesn’t band when you rest on it And most surprising is almost everything on it will have a sensor that can report back to the main computer.. Sure, Kia can make a car appear like a BMW or an Audi but when you sit in it it’s a completely different feel and you know it. No amount of stitching or diamond patterns can emulate it
Koreans, like Genesis do it better. The GV80 was more quiet and the interior cabin was easily a step up in terms of quality, design, materials, etc. No real contest. Go sit in one yourself. Easily a better luxury SUV/CUV. I will say it doesn't have the performance of the X5, but it does luxury a whole lot better where it matters most.

A plug in Hybrid is NOT an electric car and they are not comparable! It is also not about the looks as most electric cars look pretty much 'normal'. Plug-in hybrids are about flexibility allowing you to daily commute in electric-only, saving fuel, with the convenience of a combustion engine for the occasional long-distance trips without having to plan the charging stops. If you want an electric car, you buy an electric car, not a plug-in hybrid...

Odd in Europe it gets 24kw battery
The author is incorrect. It is a 24kw battery in the US model (I own one), BUT only 17kw is available to reduce deep discharge and lengthen battery pack life. US warranty on battery pack is longer than European version, which reserves less stored energy, resulting in a deeper discharge per full cycle--and shorter battery pack life.

Great review. Biggest issue I have with this X5 is the second row seat. It is inexcusable how small the legroom is back there. It feels even smaller and more cramped than X3. Not going to drop 70k for a supposedly family SUV with no space. Also the charge rate is ridiculous. Only 17kwh battery but needs 4-5 hours to fully charge? Not sure what BME engineers were thinking. Basically needs to be plugged in every single night to get enough power for daily commute. Seems like this hybrid basically has the combination of the worst of both ICE and EV world. Very disappointing.
the point of a plug in hybrid is to plug it in every night to be ready for the daily commutes. It does not depend on electric driving so it does not need fast charging. PHEVs are meant for daily trips in electric mode and occasional long trips using the engine. If you want to drive on electric only and need fast charging as you want to do long trips in electric mode, then get an electric car.
