    In Bulgaria I'm driving the new X5 45e, drove it for the whole summer of 2020.
    With the Pirelli P 0's, warmed up tarmack and tires, managed to do a 4,89 seconds from 0-62. That is impressive, especially for a 2.5 tone SUV. Every day to day driving is relaxing and enjoyable. Took it on a long journey to Greece and back 2300km it total, couldn't ask for a better experience, and was quite impressed by the economy of the car.
    Hoping in the next generation, that BMW will introduce a X5 55e with a V8 and an electric motor I would throw my money at them for one.

    Excellent review. I am considering one of these to replace my BMW 330e next year. One comment on your section talking about range and the claimed mpg, I have run my 330e for nearly 3 years and I track all of my mileage and electric use as I can claim my mileage back. Over the last year, I have got an average of 105mpg over just under 12k miles. The 330e has a claimed electric range of 25 miles but the most I have achieved is 18 and regularly get 15-16 miles. Due to the regeneration ability, even on long journeys, I have always managed to get at least 50% of my journey using pure electric. Ironically, Sport mode is more economical because the battery regen is much more aggressive. This is where these vehicles excel. The maximum I have got out of a 40 litre tank is 1045 miles, the lowest being 485 miles but that was due to me also using the car as a blue light response vehicle. The only other comment would be the affect of the cold weather. When it’s freezing, I lose about 10% of my range. I believe most EV’s also suffer from this. Again, excellent review and a very nice car.

    Joe, there is a big misunderstanding on how the overall power train works, after the EV range is gone, doesn’t mean the battery is dead, the boost is always there. Looks like you too went by your gut feeling than validating how actually it works. Plus within few miles the battery charges quickly to claw back some EV range… BTW I own this car. Outside of extreme cold weather this SUV can do 480-500 miles of combined range! That’s bladder busting for sure 😅

  • @paulverney4753

    Great video as always Joe. As a RRS owner I have to agree that the 45e is a far superior offering to the RRS P400e. A 2ltr lump in a RRS is just wrong and can’t help but think that they’ll rectify that with one of the new straight six engines before long. I’m guessing your quote on the starting point for a RR EV at £91k was based on the Vogue, which in fairness isn’t a direct competitor to X5? The RRS 400e starts at £73, but once loaded with the options most of us would want, the BMW will still have a significant price advantage. My only issue with the latest BMW’s (and for balance I also own an F11 530d touring) is the hideous dash/drivers display arrangement. When it has sat nav info etc showing it just looks a mess IMO. If they could sort that out, it could tempt me away from my RRS.

    Hi Joe, the 42 mile EV range seems fine for the 24kW battery. Once COVID is over, most Execs driving these to the office will have a charger, to fill the battery for their journey home. Charge at home overnight from a normal plug, no problem. Effectively providing an EV for the week, with the performance and range for the weekend. Seems perfect as a transition for now.

    Great video Joe!
    I picked up one of these last month as needed a larger family car. The pano roof is definitely the option to go for, my daughter loves it.
    My daily journey is about 20 miles a day in non motorway traffic so I’m only using the electric option. But will do longer journeys when lockdown is lifted to see family etc. So for us is ideal as I can charge it overnight but have the option to do a longer journey when needed with the petrol engine.
    I did a round trip from west london to Bristol and back and used the full charge plus a quarter tank of fuel which isn’t bad.
    My Audi S5 would’ve used well over half the tank!

      @@JoeAchilles1 100% with the pano roof! I think my main criticism with the car is the rear space isn’t great for a car this size. Q7 would’ve been my first choice for spaciousness however the hybrid range isn’t very impressive at claimed 28 miles and at the time of ordering was only available in sport trim which compared to the s5 is very basic in terms of creature comforts and as the range is less then 30 miles it wasn’t congestion charge exempt.

    Joe, great video. My 440 coupe (same engine) does 30ish mpg on a long run, at pace (yes I know it is not a like for like comparison) I just do not get why people like SUV’s. Estate cars have more space, less weight and therefore more efficient. A M340i estate would be cheaper to buy, a better car to drive and dependant on the type of driving you do it would be a better car to run. Hybrids are sold to bring the manufactures fleet average mpg. SUVs are style over function and have a fat profit margin for the manufacture

    • @mubblemann
      @mubblemann 3 года назад

      I dunno. I drive a 440i gran coupe and I'm very tempted by the X5 45e. More space in the rear (I've got 2 kids), safer, and better practicality. Little things like the boot lid seat for dressing kids or taking off muddy clothes and boots when out and about, the ability to do the school run on electric power only, still having that lovely B58 engine. It's all a very tempting package. I am still comparing this to 545e though, but that is very much an old man wagon and I'm not sure I'm quite that old yet. Still going to hold on to the 440 for another year though.

    Setting the charge you desire to keep for as you said driving then slowly through London isn't a false eonomy at all, genuius actually. Means on the motorway at 70 mph your combustion engine is running at it's most efficient, and then in town, the more efficient electric powertrain kicks in where the combustion engine would be struggling at 15-20 mpg. Very clever, though amazed it isn't automated...! Great video.

Our current X3 30i "msport"easily makes the 400 mile journey to our lake cabin where as it would be so disappointing to have to fuel up again to make that same journey with the hybrid X3 version. Some of it has to do with the grams of CO2 emission per kilometer, which is a figure that matters in some european countries with regards to the car being classified as a low emission vehicle etc. Diesel hybrids produce a lot more CO2/km than a petrol hybrid do.

    I agree with Joe and can confirm how efficient this X5-45e is, after driving it for almost 1 year now. Best result I’ve managed is 1389km with 1x fuel tank, just because of using the electric motor for all short trips, so it is possible to make from a 2500kg ‘tank’ and efficient EV 😉 Average is now 6.3 after 20.000km/12.000mls. Using the X5 50-50 highway, so it could be even more efficient. Besides efficiency it’s also a fast Autobahn-cruiser, speeds up to 250km/h is no problem at all, the biggest challenge for the last year has nothing to do with this car; and that’s Covid-19 👈

    It's a shame that they don't combine their 3 litre diesel engines with electric motor in this. My 45e can only do below 25mpg running on the petrol engine only. Good car to use in town and to an extend it gets rid of the range anxiety of pure electric cars but the charging time for 40-50 miles of pure electric range is painful.

    • @jonathonalsop2120

      Why not a diesel hybrid is a common thought, I know I've had it, but diesel/batteries both add weight, diesel/electric are both costly, and diesel/electric engines both have excellent torque. So combining the two gives you a vehicle that costs more, weights more and the torque benefit of an ev is a bit wasted on a diesel. Plus all the smog equipment that comes with a diesel rather than a petrol. It's not that it couldn't work, but the financial case for manufacturers isn't there. The VW XL1 is about the only example I can think of where someone really tried a swing for the fences combining the two powertrains. At least when it's pure electric range was empty you could still count on around 130mpg.

    Great film. Isn't that the same bit of road in the Cotswolds that Harry uses for his handling tests? We should all realise that the official fuel consumption test is a laboratory test which is a very very good test for comparing one car to another "in a laboratory test" only. In fact, you can't really argue with it. Shame it doesn't relate to real-world on the road conditions, but then you could never do that realistically - far too many variables!

    Hello,
    With Joe is the first time,I hear than once the electric battery drains and the car works exclusivily on gas and this means looses the electric horse power. This is a very bad thing. There are any 45e owner here who can confirm this? I am in the market for a 745e or x5 45e . From what I read until now,altough you do not have the electric range the electric engine still works as per power delivery. You should not have a detuned car.
    Thanks

    • @dgdave2673
      @dgdave2673 8 месяцев назад +1

      I have this and can confirm that what your concerns are not true. When the EV range is exhausted, that doesn’t mean battery is fully emptied, a 20% charge is always retained. The gas engine replenishes the EV range as it runs only on gas, and importantly the EV boost is always available! So rest peacefully, did you buy any of the PHEVs you mentioned?

  • @Oetti
    @Oetti 3 года назад

    Like Joe I prefer cars to SUVs, and combustion-engine cars to full electrics, however plug-in hybrids *SEEM* to be the best of both worlds (with the exception of losing some cargo capacity), in that you have the same - or even slightly better - range to the equivalent petrol-only car, without any EV range anxiety...yet you still get the help of a small bit of full-EV-style instantaneous torque and, most importantly, very accommodating tax incentives and the knowledge that your car will still be "in" after various draconian government bans on non-electric cars. All that being said, even as only a "begrudging" acceptor of SUVs, the BMW X5 45e seems like the most perfect car being sold today. Its petrol engine is a nearly 300bhp legendary BMW straight six, it looks decent, drives like a dream, has space for 5 passengers and their belongings, the BMW brand cachet, and truly mind-blowing acceleration for what is, at the end of the day, a 2.5 tonne mid-sized family SUV; 0-62mph in 4.97s means it's literally as fast or slightly faster than an E39 M5. And the best part: when you need a daily driver, you have somewhere between 40 and 50 miles of electric-only range, meaning 99% of us can drive to work and back and run errands essentially for free, with the advent of free EV charging springing up in more and more locations.
