BMW X5 45e PHEV 2020 review. Is this new plug-in hybrid better than a pure EV in the real world?

- The new 2020 BMW X5 45e can do a claimed 54 miles on electric power only, thanks to its big 24KWh battery, which is more than other rival PHEV SUV on sale today. But what I wanted to know is this a better option for most buyers than buying a pure electric car? Find out here..

Harry is smashing it lately.
Absolutely!
Just look at his subs, all the RUclipsrs invest in high tech gear and daily material and struggle by comparison, Harry comes along looks at real world problems, with a luv in his heart for the ICE era motoring and tells an honest story. I remember years back when Harry first made videos and like all of us he was somewhat uncomfortable behind the camera, but now he is totally in his element. Back in the early EVO days of VT Chris Harris was the only person able to tell a story to a camera. Chris saw the future early on and EVO under Dennis publishing is forever playing catch up in a digital era by buying market share rather than creating their own IP.

@@Tracertme Well said mate.
Absolutely loving the regular content Harry. Best car show in the known universe!
I love how easy it is to watch :)
BMW should just give you that X5. You've done a great job selling it to me and I'm sure a lot of other people. Well done sir!
Absolutely. I was playing with an idea to buy one and this has totally convinced me.
Churning the videos out lately Harry! Not complaining though it's the best content on RUclips.
Best car content on RUclips by far 👏🏼👏🏼 , love the BMW X5 hybrid 👍🏼
Amazing videos Harry. But lets be honest, we're all waiting for that Fiat Panda review...
EV version..
This was the first Harry's Garage video I watched and it won't be the last. I really like your presentation style, no histrionics, just a nice conversation with a knowledgeable friend.
54 miles ... fascinating! (I have a 7 seat diesel 2019 X5. It’s superb with kids/family/guests. ) I love watching your channel Harry. Utterly trusted content.
Superb review again and very informative Harry. My 45e arrives in May and I cannot wait!
That little white needle would drive me nuts!.. just like the mpg gauge on my e46. Graat video Harry, looking forward to seeing more content on here and Harry's Farm 👍
I've got a 2005 X4 4.4V8 and the mpg gauge often makes me weep :)
But it does sound great in tunnels and multi-story car parks!
You would assume that dash is customisable and u can turn it off.
Great video! I love how you explained all the maths of it whilst actually driving.. very impressive and clearly indicates you've done your research and subsequent homework!
This was 1st class and very informative. Thank you Harry for giving us reviews without sounding like a salesman!
First time watching a Harry's video,
I've been waiting 6 months for someone you make a such a comprehensive video on the bmw x5 45e. The information you have detailed on the rail life performance and cost effectiveness of the electric & petrol combined, has 100% answered all my questions about the vehicle. Its total thumps up for this PHEV model. I've owend a Mitsubishi Outlander phev for the last 2 years, but my true love is the bmw x5.
Once again, thank you for the content.
Its my pleasure to subscribe to your channel.
Tom Jackson I own one, very pleased with it. Only reservation is it’s width.
Mr Harry, you are really hammering it now, TG forget it. Harry got it, deep analysis and the numbers.! Thanks SIr!
Why even compare TG to Harry? TG is currently an 'entertainment show for twits' as someone once remarked on the comments on one of Harry's videos. Might not have been an "i" in the 'twits' ;)
The only reason TG is still relevant is because of Chris Harris.

The original X5 was designed by Frank Stephenson (Him of modern McLaren's, New Mini & New Fiat 500 fame) on a plane flight to Italy in a couple of hours where upon landing he was greeted by 3 old blokes to build the prototype. Frank on expressing his uncertainty that these 3 old men could build a fully functioning the X5 prototype from his quick sketch in time was told "these are the same 3 men that built the Miura prototype" Needless to say the job was done and the rest is history!
The original X5 has aged very well
Have you been watching chasing perfect on Netflix by any chance?

How have you found the car so far?
This is a great review. Absolutely love the new X5 45e and this video shows all the capabilities of the car without glossing over any criticisms. At the end of the day, it looks like a game changer for us fans of BMW, the perfect combo of performance and environmental efficiency in a full size suv.
Really not interested at all in these newer cars but I can happily watch and listen to Harry talk about anything, always end up learning stuff it’s awesome , loving all this content

Dear Mr. Metcalfe / Mr Harry.... I served your friend Mr. Robert Johnson a coffee at the *Stoneleigh classic car show* on Friday. What a lovely gentleman! Big fan of yours sir.
This is a double treat as it appears we're also about to get another instalment of the Espada build, i've had worse days 😊
You mean all those which don't come with 12 cylinders... :-)
Excellent as ever, thanks Harry! I didn't expect you to review this but, like yourself, I'm massively intrigued by the potential of this car givent he extended (viable) electric range so was very excited when this video popped up! Really informative, unbiased and "real" review. Sadly out of my budget at the moment but I hope to see more on the road. It also preserves the glorious ICE architecture we car enthusiasts (ahem, petrol heads) adore a little longer. That straight-6 is a marvel. I hope to embrace the new tech in the near future!
I think you have taken a car review to a whole new level and direction. Facts sharing were on throughout the video and a fair neutral comparison is the best I have ever heard off. Congratulations..
Great video Harry, would love to see BMW do a 5 Series tourer with this range and maybe a 240bhp engine, think that would be perfect for me!
Love the Panda in the Stable!
I may be watching almost 2 years after it was first posted but what a great review. You've answered all my questions and these are still relevant today. Hadn't considered buying this car before....I am now.
i find myself always "liking" videos even if the car tested is not my cup of tea, purely because Harry is a class act , no gimmicks no showing off for the camera just intelligent reviews for true petrol heads .. well done harry

Great video, as always. What sort of cost is involved in having a home charge point installed? Also what is the life expectancy of the batteries? Would these vehicles be an viable second hand purchase in say around 5-10 years?
Same question here, oh BMW guarantees batteries for only 6 years! Be aware! About the charger, not just the cost, but what kind of amperage do you need? Most old houses don't have a lot of room on their breaker boards.
Harry is the king of motoring journalism , no one is compared ( perhaps maybe his younger neighbor but that’s another story ) . Best car reviewer by far !
Best car review I've ever watched. Brilliant. Thank you!
I remember reading somewhere when the X5 45e was announced that BMW were considering multiple engines including a 4 cylinder (like in the previous gen 40e) but there wasn’t much difference in economy between that and this 6 cylinder so they decided to go with the bigger smoother engine as they thought customers would prefer it. I’d certainly go for this over the P400e, and would be interested to see how it compared to the Mercedes GLE 350de.
Excellent review! My three year old X5 40e use 2,5 l/100km locally and 7,4 l/100 km on long distance (fully loaded). But 80% of the distance I drive is locally around town. With this new 4,5e I would go fully electric for month. All the EV and all the ICE advantages in one car!
how efficient is the battery charging while driving?
@@MrHellrider9 Going downhill on cruise control, the brakes are not used and the battery charged at greate pace on the 40e I owned, as well as on my 45e today. Just like any EV.
Best review I've seen on this car...thank you.
I've seen the future and it works! Great video, Harry. Thanks!
Can you do a comparison on this to the Mercedes equivalent please. They seem to be closely matched.
Cool, just make it as a 5 series touring now, BMW.
That would be lovely. But it would have a smaller battery I'm afraid.
A Gentleman Volt was also a series hybrid with a small fuel tank and fwd. Not really comparable to a front engined rwd parallel hybrid that weighs almost 900lbs more.
It’s coming. 545e will arrive later this year 👌
In a 3 series touring would be even better, proper performance plug in hybrid. The 5 series has gotten fat. Its as big as the 7 from a few generations ago.
@@tomvermoesen 545e Will only Come as a sedan. 5 series touring Will be 530e 2 litre 4 cylinder. With or witout xdrive. But hopefully 545e touring Will be introduced in 2022
Another brilliant review. Real life, impartial and useful. 10/10
Great vid Harry I’ve been waiting for a honest appraisal on the 45e it looks like this will give me the extra range over my current 40e........thanks
And all the time you were using the rear wiper. Even when talking in the garage.
Nice review
It was also a very noisy rear wiper!
That wiper was driving me nuts.
And Me:- I kept shouting switch yer wiper off. Look in your rear view mirror. Listen 👂
its a BMW.. its already broken
Did my head in too. Would probably have doubled the range if that hadn't been on constantly.
Hybrids dont sound like fun, But having a BMW straight six and lots of electric range makes this one alot better :)
That's what I thought, trouble is I hate diesels as well always have.. bought my wife one once brand new and found out she expected me to drive it also, so sold it after 8 months and it cost me a fortune in depreciation.. but I really can't get on with them and their DPF issues...
If only the I6 had the full 325 - 340 horsepower... call it the M50e
@@visionist7 Can you imagine a true M car being electric.... :-( I need to go and make another cup of tea....on the up side thank goodness I am not young...:-)
@@Tracertme I went crazy a few years ago and blew my inheritance on something loud, fast and petrol fuelled knowing its days were numbered and I mightn't get another chance. I only had it 8 months before it had to go. Now I feel like I made a huge mistake but in 30 years time when all ICE cars are illegal, maybe I'll think differently

Another great video from a knowledgeable reviewer; thank you Harry.
Proper objective Motoring journalism Harry. Keep up the good work.🤙
might be a hybrid but that six sounds lovely
This is why it needs to have that engine, it's a hybrid that sounds good
We've had our game thoroughly changed! lol.
Great job Harry! So honest, articulate and insightful. I agree with everything you shared except I like the exterior looks. Thank you!!
Harry great video. You are extremely knowledgeable and informative - keep the good work up!
GREAT balanced video as always Harry - try the new Merc GLE 350de PHEV, it has a bigger 31kWh battery and 60 mile claimed EV range, 320hp system output, very comfy ride, but interestingly it is a 4-cly diesel, so on long road-trips you're getting great mpg! And on your "regular commute", press the EV button, stay in EV and you'll never use the engine! You say plug-in hybrids have come of age - whereas the government are banning them in 12 years or so - do you think that a bad call, and will put off people changing to EV? And force road-trip customers to frequent the horrid & ineffective public charging network in their BEV's! Best wishes.
Yes, environmentalists don't want you going on road trips, so are pushing for Plug-In Hybrids to be banned. Greenpeace or whoever, want you on your bicycle! What will happen in America?
dude, I would love that GLE 350de PHEV for my 50 mile round trip commute. I would charge at home overnight, I would stay in silent relaxed EV mode all the time, never run the diesel, never worry about the extra weight I'm carrying around!, never have to visit a repulsive charging station thank you very much, diesel doesn't go off in the tank so easily (modern petrol goes off quickly), never worry if I might need the car at sudden short notice because my unused diesel would suddenly burst into life…! I could even drive it on a Harry's Road Trip to Cannes and back... but hybrids are too expensive... I can't afford a nice new GLE 350de...! Shame...
You got me when you said £76k was "cheap". Will buy five of them tomorrow at this price.
I totally bought one, mostly based on your reviews. Thanks for your very thoughtful comments!

So in mixed driving the petrol engine does a lot of cold starts or doesn't get to its proper operating temperature? That doesn't sound good.
matauboy wouldn’t fancy owning one of these out of warranty
According to the BMW, no wear can be measured.
Old thinking chap! They have it set up not to be a problem...
Harry nails it yet again, great review.
The best review ive seen, cause he explains every thing ...!!
Great review as always. Great car for the first and maybe second owners with plenty of money but after say 6 years old I can see these hybrids being very cheap. I couldn’t afford a new or nearly new one and couldn’t afford to replace the batteries or have the engine rebuilt from all the cold short burst running it will have done.
The motoring future for petrol heads like me that don’t want to spend the rest of their lives doing complicated mental arithmetic when ‘enjoying’ their drive is bleak 😔
Your lambo for the win every time. Can’t wait to see the next instalment.
After 6 years, that batterypack is toast and the constant cold running engine wouldn't be fairing good.
Love a bit of Dutch "High Bread!"
By far my #1 Creator on YT.
Great review, I remember driving an original X5 4.4 on a long trip to France, very impressed at the time as a drivers car.
Please don't confuse kW and kWh. When you said "This does more miles per kW" it's like saying "This does more miles per bhp". kW is power, kWh is energy . You also did this in the Land Rover video.
Actually kwh is capacity. Like miles per gallon would be miles per kwh. But on point from you, many journalists/people tend to get this wrong.
@@nicolasalexandermusing7313 actually, it's both. fundamentally energy is power applied over time. e.g. X * thousands of watts * 1 hour. batteries store energy. it takes certain energy to move a car that weights whatever over 1 mile. batteries can discharge at a certain rate for given potential, therefore it can also be measured in wh, kwh, ah, v*a*h, whatever
lovely video
One of the few decent reviews. Congratulations!
Brilliant review! Real clarity, long live black and white. Thank you Harry.
I have the 30d version of this car and it's fantastic. This PHEV looks like my next choice.
Andy but what you really want in a vehicle like this is a diesel hybrid...
I'd keep the diesel, unless you don't mind worse handling due to added weight and plan to get rid of the PHEV before it gets significant mileage. Turbo petrol BMWs aren't known for reliability in the first place, adding a highly complicated hybrid system on top of that only makes it worse.
17:50 when he floors it and you hear the engine start and immediately go to redline! That just doesn't feel right to me
The engine will be cold and I doubt the oil pressure will be fully reached as well. Really bad for rod bearings as they need to warmed up otherwise they wear out
I think it's because in Sport mode it's already in a lower gear
@@leenevin8451 I believe a lot of these hybrids find ways to keep the fluids in the engine warm, and I know the Mondeo will turn the engine on intermittently to keep coolant temp. Same for stop-start engines, they won't work unless the engine is warm.
noeL I’m aware of stop start. Still don’t trust it
@@dreamcrusher112 unless they have an electric oil pump running before startup, it really isn't great to start and engine and immediately redline it
Nice review Harry Very detailed numbers from the real world. Well done a review with credibility.
Another Great review Harry! Thanks
U should test the new MB GLE 350de Hybrid, 99 km EV range, thats around 62 miles EV range. Best regards from Norway
I wonder when you come to sell/trade in if you can tell how many miles the engine has done and how many miles it's done purely on Electric?
A good question. I also wonder how the engine will wear as it's potentially activated to work hard from cold with no warming up time.
Good question! Awnser it somebody!
@@resnonverba137 Well, I've worked at a Hyundai dealership and I stopped recently. In there plugin hybrids (ioniq hev and or phev) they used really thin oil for the engine so it got up to temperature just as fast as as regular petrol engine. However. The normal hybrid vehicle I drove, always fired up the petrol engine as soon as I started it when it was cold outside, just to put some temperature in it.
I think, unless you really put your pedal to the metal, the engine will be fine. However, I've got no proof. These cars are just 4 years on the market now an no errors have occurred yet.
@@Stichting-AAP Thanks for info.
Res Non Verba id imagine as long as you stay under 4K rpm it’s fine. I’m curious if the engine has a heater on the block to get temperature into the engine. I’ve owned two Bmw now and they typically don’t get up to temperature for the first 15-20 mins of driving so I’m very curious.

It will never make your spine tingle
@@visionist7 Wrong, a purpose built weight balanced BEV designed for Fun Handling. BEV architecture just allows better Packaging of heavy big components. Majority will be RWD biased and have more space for Complex Bulky Suspension like Double A Arm with no big lower Strut. Then the low and flat weight will make the mass easy Rotate & Turn. We're talking about a hunkered down RWD biased chassis that likes to Rotate. It will shove your spine in multiple direction, needs serious Sports Seats with side bolstering. Mind blowing.

@@visionist7 If all you care about the car is a exhaust note. You clearly are not concentrating on DRIVING. I like cars for Handling Cornering & Speed. Noise is secondary, very few modern engines sound good. I want a Driver's Car, not a loud straight line cruiser.
Think this would make a lot of sense partnered with their 2 litre diesel, which gets great economy on motorways.
That is what the previous generation was and it was underpowered. The smaller battery gave it a range of 11 miles on electric only.
Bob Bolitho Underpowered for what? Being zero emissions in town and getting great economy on motorways? The 2.0 diesel is plenty powerful enough for 99% of situations, add the electric and stick it in a 3 series and it’s perfect.

Thank you for the great content Harry - Are you planning on reviewing a BMW i8 as they end production this month? 🙂👍
The rear wiper turn on on dry make me nervous haha
My 2020 i8 has the same software and yes it works! Mine has only 11,6 but as it’s much lighter it still does 54 km in real life charge.
Klaus Nielsen congrats on getting that car. It is so much underrated due to it’s neither a BEV nor a full on hardcore racer. The three cylinder sound also is amazing in sport mode!
Nico Steinacker it may not be a hardcore racer in the sense of Porsche 918 or La Ferrari but it is a lot faster than all the iHaters think they know! Mine is the Roadster variant but I drive a Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence as a daily and plan to get this X5 45e or the 745 Le later this year.
54km is only 33 miles so much worse than this X5.
